Darn, I am flying into Orlando on the 13th
@ there will be more 💪🏻
i'll be honest. I don't even know why i watch your videos... i don't even have a production company or freelance. lol I work in tech and have a 3d printing business. But there's something so great about watching you explain your processes and mindset with things. Thanks for sharing.
@@Rootkitdev Haha I appreciate that. I like seeing people work through their processes as well. I feel good when I see them discover a new optimization.
It sounds like you are a nerd like me.
@@davidmorefield oh for sure. i do love cameras. have the a7s3 and ZVe1 and just picked up the fx30... just don't really use them much anymore... definitely a nerd tho. Just living out my dream by watching your life play out. lol
David, I know this is off topic, but thank you for showing Misty walking with her little harness on. Always remember, you will always be number 1 in her eyes.❤
@@supercinemascope Grooming her to be the best adventure kitty. 🐱
Now you got me thinking on ditching my V 90 battery lol 2+ hours on the stock battery sounds pretty good to me.
@@AlbertoMendoza 2 and a half hours 😉
I am dual recording all the time now too, Got some large 1tb anglebird CF express type A cards and have over 500 min in 4k 24fps.
@@BrianHunt that’s a safe practice.
It's really interesting watching the evolution of your kit. I compare that to a recent video that Cranky Cameraman put out on his 20+ years of evolving kit. Your evolution is significant compared to where you started. Even your FX6 kit is changing with the current direction of lower quality = more authentic for social media. That is a huge difference in mics from the Sony UWP to Hollyland's.
@@GeorgeGuillory Yeah I like see the dynamic changes as well. It’s in turn bc the types of jobs I’m getting now as well.
the hollyland mark 2s are great i used them the other day after a game to do a interview with a player and coach for basketball ....easy and they just work ...and i like how small the new ones are vs the old magnet ones were
@@MikePiaMediaLLC They solve the same problem for me!
But the magnetic ones are way easier to hide , but yeah it you dont need to ,these new ones are great .
Love just running my C70 with a BPA60 battery, can get a good five or more hours out of it. Perfect for long interviews etc.
Lighting from outside 🔥
I think it's super interesting how people and filmmakers grow and evolve over their careers and how their needs and wants change with experience. In the beginning we are heavily influenced by others and TH-camrs like to tell us that "we need to have the kind of camera that we can build up and rig out because, YES size does matter and clients like to see a bigger camera package." I used to build my C70 rigs with a Smallrig Mattebox, no filters, but it just looked cool. Whereas in my experience, that couldn't me further from the truth. Eventually we all learn that clients don't really care what your camera looks like, they care about saving money where they can, getting the best image quality while capturing their vision for the project and they care about hiring the right person for the right job. Unless you're working for an established brand that has very specific requirements, no one actually cares what camera you're using, it's all personal preference for the most part at this point. Over the last year or so, I have been working to strip back my video equipment and only maintain exactly what I need to get the job done. Just an observation that I've been seeing. :)
@@ty-k6708 Good observation. I was never swayed by client perception. The vmount route was a way for me singularice my power solution. All accessories off one battery type and one charger. I still believe it is a huge workflow improvement.
I am frequently asked for a specific type of camera. That is bc my clients are agencies and not end clients. So it really helps my business to have the commonly requested camera brands.
However, the client has no bearing on my power solution. And I like experimenting with this smaller setup. My biggest hurdle is losing the nice, big, sharp smallhd monitor. I wish Sony would offer a pro version of their lcd.
nice breakdown! do you have link for the lightstands?
@@Cruankkman I detail which ones I use in this video. th-cam.com/video/KEqwrTmhkWk/w-d-xo.html
hi! thanks for the great content!
Can you share the link o name of the light stands?
Thanks!!😎
@@dshot7917 I bought them used. They are Lowel stands. I will detail it on the next video. Filming it right now.
Hey! If you come out to San Diego, I'd love to meet you!!! Also, I use the Kastar BPU-66 batteries. They last a LONG time
@@aaronjonellhall1937 Would love to hit SD. Do the kastar’s have an accurate capacity remaining when they power the camera AND a monitor through dtap?
I'm glad those mics worked out for you, i will pick up a set :)) what are the name of those light stands again please? I was listening hard a few times *but nothing was coming. Thanks bud
@@mcewan-media Lowel Omni. Purchased them used off eBay. The new ones have black collars and are not built as strong.
@davidmorefield ah gotcha thanks, will check. I have stands, but usually they turn up and they're too heavy or too light. It's actually quite difficult to get the right balance eh
To comment on your note about accidentally setting the hair light/kicker coming from the key side. That is actually a very naturalistic approach in lighting. I've Gaffed for multiple DP's that prefer to set the kicker on key side as it feels more natural. So I wouldn't sweat it too much, great video as always.
@@candersonset Hmm I’d like to research this. I need to see what it looks like when done well.
Just picked up an FX3. And thanks to discussions here, I bought x3 OEM batts and a dual OEM Sony charger. Also, consider the donut-style sandbags for your light stands. They can be lightweight but you’ll really like them. Great stands, I have 3, but you should bag it for sure.
@@tonygarcia1986 Love this comment section. Thanks for the awesome recommendation!
Hey David, huge fan of your channel. Thanks for sharing such valuable insights of your journey. Would you maybe talk about your thoughts about attending trade shows like NAB and if you are going to attend any this year? Also any plans of doing a meet up sometime in the Miami area? Thanks!
@@rau_dop Nab has no real benefit for me but I’m sure it would be cool to see products. Yeah I can totally do Miami.
@@davidmorefield Amazing. Thanks for taking the time to reply. Will stay on the lookout for when Miami happens. 🤙🏼
I bought the Hollyland M2s myself a few weeks ago. Curious to know your thoughts as well.
@@ronyedin they seem to fit in perfectly as someone who is not a professional audio recordist.
@ I already record 32bit with my shotgun into Zoom f3. I was thinking of using this as a secondary backup. But so far, I think it the audio quality could be sufficient for 75% of my event jobs. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Hahaha, having so many mics happens. I have way too many too. Its a slippery slope buying specific equipment per client need. Not a bad thing at all for repeat clients, just you end up with a lot of gear.
The Lowell light stands are great, I have used a set of Selens clones of them for 3 years now. They are great for a light weight interior kit. A different brand even makes Carbon Fiber versions nowadays which I really want to try.
Ditching the Vmount is a good call for that type of shoot. literally the only reason I use V mount these days is for the counter weight to balance my rig. A BPU with a dtap out would fullfill my needs just as well asside from the weight offset.
Nice lighting setup for the client, looks bright and trendy 😊👌
@@jamesandcamera I just want it to have native vmount. That would solve so many of my issues
@@davidmorefieldyeah 100% native V mount is much nicer than adapting V mount.
I agree, that A frame looked great!
I''ve been using the Sony BP-U35 batteries for my NX800 and I want to say I wasn't too impressed with their run time. Maybe I didn't have them fully charged on that particular job. I'll pay more attention on my next one.
@@scottsmokerx mine said 148 minutes on a full charge.
could you imagine a mic as small as the hollylands but with internal 32 bit float recording? 😮💨 🥲 that'll be the day lol nice video 👏
@@Woofle-3 Honestly I don’t care about 32bit. It’s never been an issue for me, I monitor audio levels in camera. It’s not like people start screaming out of nowhere in this social media/commercial work.
@@davidmorefield good point 😅 I think for me I'd just like the idea of being able to put that lav on and it hardly even looking like a lav and not have to set levels lol I get nervous about setting levels properly and taking the time to monitor 😄
@ For me the problems aren’t usually levels. Rather, it’s that the mic is rustling against clothing. That’s why I need to monitor.
@@Woofle-3 32-bit or not, audio will never be set and forget. This is a big issue with not having a pro sound mixer, that's their job to properly mic, set levels and monitor. Always. Most camera people are not good sound mixers and they shouldn't have to be. Camera ops and DPs need to be worrying about lighting. focus, composition, framing, camera movement, not worrying about sound, that's a whole other job.
That's the one thing I hate about my Tentacle Track Es, can only monitor them on a phone before hitting record. Once you hit record, you cannot monitor them because of the Zaxcom patent. It's maddening.
Great video, David! Nice stripped down approach to the shoot, man. I’m with you on suddenly realizing how many different mic sets you have. It’s funny how having several types of mics really are necessary. Like, sooo many different scenarios!! A friend told me, “you have all the mics, man”. I just like staying ready so I won’t have to get ready… as best as I can 😏. Those new hollylands, tho…appealing. 👌
@@makrmedia they are a really good option for social media. I will mostly be using them for phone recording.
Yea, I need to slim down on my mics too lol. DJI Mic 1, Rode Wireless Go II, Instamic, DJI Mic Mini, Tascam DR-10L, and two shotgun mics. Keeping things slim can def help with making thing simple and saving brainpower for what really matters.
@@BrandonLuckain I would like to reduce mics but honestly they all have a really good purpose.
David you should do a timelapse video of the changes you made to your FX6. It was a lot of them.
@@cgibbons881 that’s a good idea
If you tell me what one lens and one camera body u would use for the rest of time I’ll sub ❤😊

@@davidmorefield you’re a genius
@@davidmorefield lets go skate and get some clips 😜 greetings from Germany!
What's the model of Lowell light stands you got??
@@marin_real_estate_photography I think Omni. My next video will detail all of the new gear.
Your monitor is a power hog. That's why you need a v-mount to go 3+hrs.
Some clients really require the big horse and pony show. They want you to show up with professional gear because it makes them feel like you are a professional that does what you're doing and they can sit there comfortably rather than the uncertainty if you show up with minimal prosumer looking gear.
But it is all comes down to use case.
@@travisminneapolis It’s actually not a power hog. The low power draw is one of the main reasons why I chose it over other options.
To me, I’ve never had one instance where camera changed the client perception. It’s always been about what level I’m working at. With lower rates- early on in my career, I was bringing less capable items. Now that I am at a higher level, I bring the appropriate level of gear.
Battery size and matteboxes don’t make any difference to me. Case in point on this shoot, the client isn’t even there. They are all remote and can’t see any gear.
Clients don’t just look at the size of camera. They are also affected by the lights, stands, modifiers, carts, communication, handshake, arriving on time, wardrobe. Camera size is a small piece of the puzzle in my opinion.
Why dont you use your Sony wireless as much?
@@DirectedbyZ Most of my shoots recently have been retainer work and they are a social media client. So I’ve been primarily using small wifi mics.
But whenever I do corporate work, I use the Sony’s.
When are you going to Toronto?
@@racemode Ouh I’d really like to do a Canada stop. Never been to Toronto but I have a few connections. That could work!
2:56 wait, no you don’t…? XLR is mono (balanced) and is probably sending the left channel down that XLR. You need a stereo mini jack to dual mono XLR to set it up where ch1 is left, ch2 is right
@@HezJP Yes, that is what I meant to say. The left and right channels are filled with mono.
I just started selling a bunch of lenses I was hoarding. Most of my paying gigs involve 2 lenses, 3 maximum.
Now I need to sell all my half working wireless mics and just buy the damn DJI mic 2
@@CartyCantDance haha they are convenient. I recommend them.
Yo, we have production studio in Sarasota with 30x40 cyc wall, we want to do an open house and local "meetup" soon to connect with local pros and showcase our studio offerings as a production company and studio space. We also may be doing cheap/free studio time to get some content and and clients testimonies of the space!
@@SolisCreative Hey man, email me. Address is listed in my description. I’m sure we can work something out. Congrats on the space.
If you're picking up one of those Sony shoe mics I'll sell you mine...haven't touched it in about a year or so
It's not uncommon for battery manufacturers to be dishonest with their capacities. Of course the capacity is diminished over time but it's worth understanding that so you can accurately plan your power budget. DJP did a good video about testing various batteries and their advertised capacity and real capacity: th-cam.com/video/Qw_wUePXi6Y/w-d-xo.html
@@JoshC. thanks for this. I’ll check it out.
I switched to third-party BP-U batteries and haven't looked back. Keeps the camera smaller and more simplified, same runtime. I mostly have the IDX batteries with two D-Tap ports and a USB but there are many options. The idea was to be able to have the single v-mount solution to power every piece of kit but it turns out I still never use batteries to run my lights, and no matter what there are always those things you can't power with a big brick. Almost everything these days can be charged via USB which also helps with the hassle of bringing the right chargers to the job for one-off batteries like gimbals, wireless mics, 360 cam, etc.
@@heyty How accurate is capacity remaining reading on the idx when powering camera and monitor? I’ve heard from users it gives inaccurate times, especially when running low. Do you have the same experience?
@@davidmorefield I find it to be surprisingly accurate but it does depend on the accessories I'm running. With camera + SmallHD 702 touch, it's accurate give or take 30 minutes, and gives ample "low battery" warning instead of just shutting off like some other third party batteries I've had. When I add more stuff to it, the camera seems to have a hard time calculating for remaining.
