Doesn't have to be pig bristle brush. After coating, you let it rest flat for 2-4 minutes so the emulsion evens out the streaking. Sodium Dichromate adds contrast in this process. You can add it to your emulsion, rather than the developer so you don't need to create multiple developer versions. Less wasteful and less costly. You can also selenium tone your negative after processing to boost contrast of the actual negative rather than in the printing process.
