Couple of suggestions: 1 - You should setup one of these drills for the ice patch. 2 - if you don't care for the stone, just have an ejector remove it all, like you did on your mining ship earlier. 3 - I would stick a wind turbine and a refinery on the mining platform, might as well make it do all the work! 4 - You're awesome and keep up the great entertainment!

@@Kanajashi There's also multiple Mods to convert the Stone into Gravel, & Gravel into Ores, so you don't need to worry about the Stone being useless. I use it for my Solar System Minimalist Space Start. The one I use is pretty well balanced, as it converts the Stone into Gravel into Ore, which then needs to be smelted, and the return is a percentage of the Stone used, which really makes the Efficiency Upgrades for the Refineries very important.
Hey Kanajashi, I've done a bit of testing with the new blocks and thought I'd share. Hydrogen Engines are built in an on state with out hydrogen in its internal tank. Cycling the engine off then back on fills the tank and starts the engine. Power cycling the entire grid basically does the same thing with more risk of power loss. (Engine side note) A engine left running after a battery(s) reaches a full charge state (with out load) will continue to run, but stops using hydrogen. Only when a draw is placed on the grid it slowly starts using fuel. Also, the survival kit, basic refinery and refinery all process stone. Each step up from the survival kit processes stone more effectively and quicker than the last. Looking good Sir! Looking forward to seeing more of your adventures!
Add a refinery for refining the stones. Refineries produce more ingots per stone than survival kit, even without yield module, and do so VERY quickly. I made a spaceship with 11 drills and refineries that can mine 1.000.000 iron ingot in minutes by just mining stone.
Recommend attaching a refinery to it and or setting up a conveyor line back to base although expensive saves time and once all the ore is depleted then just take the tubes apart again
What if you used a sensor to detect when the drills are swinging past on each revolution and go down a bit each time. You could probably get it to go as fast as it can without forcing the drills into the ground that way.
@@001sharpshot Put a sensor on the main column facing the rotor, detect subgrids only, set a detection zone a block wide and far enough in front of the sensor to clip the drills when they swing by, increase bottom distance as deep as you'd want the drills to go relative to the sensor. (You can change the sensor position, it's the clipping that matters, just keep the sensor on a different grid than the rotating subgrid and adjust the zone accordingly.) There are multiple ways from there, either you set as sensor action a timerblock that increases max piston distance on each pass with a fixed extend velocity, or alternatively set a fixed speed on the pistons then make the sensor trigger a timerblock to power the pistons and trigger another timerblock to turn them off, tweaking the second one's delay + piston velocity to go down as much as possible without bashing the drills in the ground. The first method is very precise and predictable but you get in trouble with too many pistons and the last needs more tweaking but you can adjust for a lot more pistons. (You'd want other QOL timers as well, to retract and stop, or return to a known initial state for example, so it's easy to control from a button panel) One could also use this to make a reciprocating motion instead of a circular one, kinda like a racking motion, you'd be digging a rectangle instead of a circle. A bit late but I hope it helps ^^
I love playing with these designs, the range on the drill actually lets you space them out a bit, so with a connector between each drill you can save a bit of resources and still clear out materials.
except... uhm… if you stack them close together, you dupe ore.... idk if Keen fixed that bug yet or not, but on one series I watch, a group made a giant drill ship, and because of how many drillas were on it, it would get 10 times as much ore than was actually there.
Your crazy idea at 41:32 inspired me to make my mining platform mobile. It works great on lakes. I haven't tried it over land yet. I have a piston system that extends 100 meters and I left on overnight with a refinery running too. I had so many ingots that I didn't have room to make anything (I'm using the default, for this world, 3x inventory size). Lol. It was over a silver deposit too. Today I moved it to a cobalt/gold deposit. Thanks for the suggestion!
One of the big problems I encountered with connected grids through connectors is when you click "Y" to cut the power, it will cut the power on all connected grids and therefore disconnect them all... in space they wont' move but when you put the power back with "Y" it won't restard all the disconnected grid of course, so you'll have to restart them one by one... For the hydrogen engine you just have to toggle the power of the hydrogen engine block and it will start, you don"t need to toggle the power of the whole grid.
Satisfying rig to watch! I had a similar one that was a skyward facing rotor that had a T shape on top of it, and had drills hanging off each side of the T. So I mined a big donut around the rotor base essentially xD
The disconnection issue is precisely why the base connectors should be for loading and unloading only. For charging batteries go with a separate charging dock completely isolated from the base power-wise. Connectors don't need to be connected to conveyors to transmit power. Build a tower 10 blocks high (really only need 8, but 10 will give you a buffer), build out about 8 - 10 blocks in all four directions at the top, pop a wind turbine on the end of each extension, and set up your connectors around the base. By using wind turbines you have a steady source of power without having to divert any of it to batteries and by keeping it isolated you don't have to worry about your ships crashing if for whatever reason your base loses power. Or you could put hydrogen engines and oxygen generators on your otherwise battery powered vehicles that are responsible for charging the batteries when idle (i.e. keep it off when flying and turn it on when parked and the batteries are set to recharge) and just park on the ground or in a hangar using standard landing gears.
Kana your drills were rotating so quickly because it was doing 3rpm not 1rpm on the single press of the increase button. It looks like it does them in steps of 3rpm a press. (3, 6, 9, 12, etc) Also, I love this drill design and hope you don't mind if I use it. lol
I built this rig tonight.... however all the ice seems to get stuck in the drills and not get funneled to the storage container. The setup is drill connected to rotor connection to pistons then junction and conveyored from junction to storage container.. Any Idea why the ice would not be moving from drill to storage ??
you should put ejectors on it and whitelist stones. So it only takes the Ore you want and drops the stone. I have this setup on all of my miners and it works perfectly fine!
41:30 yes! I haven't watched after this as of yet but I'm on my way xD . I hope that later in your series that you make something like that mobile drill platform!
How do you you switch from the big block to small block ( or big thruster to small thruster) on a ship/base because it's very annoying sticking to one or another
Can y'all explain how to make conveyors take ingots out of refineries and put it in storage instead? I wanna be able to hook up the stone/ore tank to the refinery and once it's been turned to ingots and everything, how do I get it to put it into separate containers?

one thing you can do add a wind turbine and basic refinary to your mining rig so that it refines the stone into iron, silicon, and nickle ingots while you are away so that you have iron, silicon and nickle ready for you to take and throw out the unneeded excess gravel.

The hydrogen engine needs hydrogen. Just turn the engine ON, and it will fill up and produce power. Turning the engine OFF, will stop it from filling up, and will stop producing power. You don't need to restart an entire grid.
Yeah you dont need to restart the grid just the block itself. Seems to be a bug people have that the hydro engine doesnt work even when you have hydrogen trying to go in.
This isn't different from a rig I made. I made mine and used timer blocks to plan everything out, and I had a LOT more pistons. To have it more stable, I used wheels on free rotors as support to prevent bending, and calculated it out.

Put survival units on all the other cargo ports set to make ingots and add two wind mills to the tower. I'm doing a smaller one on the moon.
I have done this with basic refineries and the wind mills. Won't show up in the episodes for a bit though.
Do the drills suffer from the strain of turning too fast ? Seemed like you could have drilled way much faster.
that's pretty epic man.
This comment didn't age well.
you just gave me a idea... i have my rover waiting for certain updates.
