- B.A. Robertson and I filmed an interview with Alex Harvey as part of our documentary Jock 'n' Roll Parts I & II. Sadly Alex died shortly thereafter. This film was put together in a couple of days by dismantling Jock 'n' Roll's 'cutting copy' adding back the 'trims' so that we had reassembled the 'rushes' that's why you can see the joins going through.

One of the most underated bands of all time. The music is timeless and can be enjoyed by multiple generations. I was so lucky my mum was Scottish or I might of never heard these legendary tunes.

What a great quote! I saw them on TV a few times in the 70's and thought they were a bit silly but I really liked their music and thought Alex was a terrific front man. Loved his humor.
I was too young to appreciate Alex and the boys back in 1975 but in the past three years I have gained a deep appreciation of the music , unique talent and sincerity of the man .
My uncle saw them open for Jethro Tull in Florida. Somebody had stole their instruments and they had to play with borrowed gear. "The Mafia stole my guitar.........."
The interview made me smile; what a lovely genuine guy.
I'm 62 now but saw The Sensational Alex Harvey Band in Blackburn Guild Hall in 1973 I think! I have never forgotten Alex starting the gig wearing a smoking jacket not unlike you might see Noel Coward the great British actor wearing. Not long into the first number, an the tempo picked-up, off came the jacket to reveal the black and white stripey tee-shirt and then a water pistol, with which he proceeded to squirt at the fans, fantastic, with Zal Cleminson in full clown make-up smiling maniacally, awesome stuff. It prompted me to buy his 'Next' album, so brilliantly showcased on the Old Grey Whistle Test! Legend!

I found Alex when I was 13 - I'm 58 now and he is still one of my favorites.

In praising Alex, it's important not to forget the wonderful band. I got those albums as soon as I could but it took me years to appreciate all the songs.
Alexander Harvey still holds my amazement his Diversity of musical styles and then the regurgitation of those styles and a big Alex Harvey Stamp of spitting out the lyrics whilst snearing and with tounge and cheek Smile, gravel Voice cheeky glint in his eye's his stage presence for me was second to no one.
SAHB were the best live act I ever saw. Thank you Alex for being a one off.
I'll never forget being at my cousin's house in 73 and listening to Impossible Dream. Vambo blew my face out at 12 years old. Been a fan since. I'm 60 now and still spread the good word of Alex Harvey to everyone.
A voice that makes me stop and listen......adore Alex Harvey. Everyone should know who he was and appreciate his music.
This is great, went to see slade when young and sahb were the supporting act, they changed my world forever. Will be forever grateful r i p alex sadly missed.
I saw the band at the Buxton festival. 1973 or 4. Many great bands, Nazerath, Chuck Berry, Edgar Broughton, Slade, ....but SAHB blew me away . By far , the best live band I ever saw.

I saw Alex Harvey live at a small club in Liverpool not long before he died. Great night. Fantastic singer, great voice and so expressive too. Sadly underrated. Rip Alex.

I’m 67 this June, successfully in remission after bowel-cancer, (do the poo-sticks tests folks!) & my heart sings to the Heavens reading you wonderful young things commenting on SAHB! Saw them twice in mid 70s in Brum. The Pipers on stage for Anthem, the graffiti ‘Vambo’ on the polystyrene wall, he subsequently kicked through, pouring a can of Heavy over his hair, opening both a ‘flick-knife’ comb and a Pandora’s of box of Street-mongrel Vaudeville Scot-Rock mayhem (My dad was a Partick man). & Tomorrow Belongs? Afterwards , AH says, ‘That’s a song about Nazis, & if one gets going at you, send them round to me & I’ll kick their f***ing head in!’ He couldn’t be more relevant today than ever! Burn brightly kids, don’t ever give up! ♥️🎶 John Kennedy

Alex and my mum share the same father. We all grew up loving his music. He was an immensely talented individual.

How I loved Alex!!!! Truly mesmerising performer oozing passion in this interview. THE SAHB cut a swathe across many styles of music too, innovating as they went along. He made 40, at least!!!
A fitting tribute that this film should be put together in a hurry and broadcast on the BBC three days after his death. May his memory be a blessing.

Bought Next when I was about 14 and the live album when it can out (61 now) St Antony's fire, action strasse, Vambo marble eyes. What a legacy . Thank you Alex.

I saw Alex play at the Newark Palace Theatre in the early eighties, he wasnt well, snot running down his nose, maybe flu I dont know but he gave everything. a week later i saw him at mansfield civic center and he rocked like a mad man. my all time hero. Alex Harvey. proper showman. all you kids take note.

I saw him at Nottingham Rock City around that time, not the SAHB mind you.. Not too long after, I heard he was dead. It was more like a party than a rock concert, amazing atmosphere I'll never forget it!

Sadly now both Hugh and Ted McKenna now passed away too. Hugh was a great friend of ours and very sadly missed.
As a lifelong Michael Schenker fan I’ve always known of Ted McKenna and Chris Glen. Little did I know until this past year when I discovered SAHB that they were in SAHB together. I discovered him after hearing the cover of Midnight Moses by the dead daisies. Love that song.
I was lucky enough to see the boys live at Stoke City FC when I was 15. Changed my life forever as far as music was concerned.

Never saw them, but been on board the Alex train since I was 13 some 44 years ago.
I was fortunate too. Saw them twice in LA around the time of The Impossible Dream album. Unforgettable band and bandleader.

Saw SAHB twice - firstly in London in 1974 when they were promoting THE IMPOSSIBLE DREAM - Wonderful gig which still resonates with me... Terribly sad when he left us so young and now today, I have just learned that his drummer in SAHB, Ted McKenna has left us at the age of 68.. SAHB were such a great live band - for those who have the time and resources I urge you to check out as many live recordings they made as possible.
Saw the band back in the mid-70's when "Man In The Jar" was getting lots of airplay. Excellent concert.
Just an amazing performer. Saw him at Barbarellas Birmingham, he said it was his 40th birthday party and sprayed the audience with a massive bottle of champers! What an opener!!

Saw them live in Birmingham in 1970s. Brilliant. Certainly filled the stage with his personality (not forgetting the rest of the band). Shame he died at such an early age.

I saw alex and SAHB as a thirteen year old doing "midnight moses" on tv, just after "framed" came out: the most amazing thing I had ever seen. needless to say, the world never looked the same again.
A superstar ! Sensational + a canny bit more ,what a per4mer ,original and brilliant he went away from us and way 2 soon still love him his music ! The sensational Alex Harvey band will,live on ive been in Scotland quite a few times and I've spread it about 2 those who'd never heard of him ! I'm hoping they take on board how much he was liked and loved ,but mare importantly his music that gave rock music such a boost with as much gusto as was safe ? Rocking heaven as we speak I hope !

Along with Lemmy, Alex Harvey was one of the original rock n rollers. They were doing it right at the inception of rock n roll in this country. This film proves that. What a guy. Under rated is not even in it.
I just found this band here in America and I'm loving what im hearing. Liked their version of Gamblin bar room blues. These guys deserve alot more recognition here in America

Man I loved this Guy ,still do. I saw AC/DC at Liverpool Empire and in the afternoon Bond Scott was in the bar behind the Empire, we talk about Alex and how he like him. this film is so great to see....thx Ken
When I first heard AC/DC I thought they'd totally ripped off SAHB's sound. I put that down to Zal Cleminson sounding like two guitarists (the Young brothers) and Alex's singing style similar to Bon's. SAHB will always be in my top 10 bands.
@@blairhelsing630 Zal" Cleminson born 1949 self-taught guitarist, he was 21 when he played with Tear Gas in 1971. Angus born March 1955, He was 18 when he and older brother Malcolm formed AC/DC in 1973 debut High Voltage,1975. there both from Glasgow, but the young family moved to Oz in 63 there worlds apart, Maybe there was a Glasgow sound I don,t know. but ripped off no that just silly, SAHA was big in Oz. Nick Cave states he was infatuated with the band, As to Alex's singing like Bon's well the both Glaswegians yeah.
But Bon Scott is more an Aussi, But then a again. lt like saying Rab C. Nesbitt sounds like Billy Connolly, WELL THEY DO, But the only difference between these bands, SAHA is poetic.

Had the privilege of seeing them live many times in the 70's back in my home town of St. Albans. They were always brilliant.

(Somehow Scottish and Irish people resemble us Greeks a real lot both in appearance and mentally... Even our musical traditions are similar... So I feel familiar with all your artists...it is like listening greeks rocking...same for folk/traditional music. There are historical connections for sure- Celts, Norse etc. But I am not putting it in a nationalistic way...just a nice down to earth way of how familiar Alex is to us as Greeks! Peace, love, wisdom, unity and Easter everywhere!!!)
His point about the melting pot of America inventing modern music is spot on. We needed each other once . Now we are not a melting pot. We are a salad.
A great interview brought a tear to the eye of this old rocker, It such a shame he went far too early. Thanks for the memories you legend.

Alex understood America much better than many Americans. He saw it occur from the outside. This interview is just as riveting as his music. Sensational. He was a rhythm guitarist par excellence. He also knew how to throw it together a lyric.
I was always into the who and Pink Floyd. My local youth club that I used to go to was where I got introduced to SAHB by my youth club leader. He was an old hippie type rocker. I was 13 and I'm now 48. I still love their music. It's a sad thing that Alex died but the bands music lives on. The clown effect is brilliant the faces he pulls makes me giggle Everytime. They belong up there with the who, Floyd, led zep and all the other top bands of the time.

Oh wow, I didn't know he had passed, I worked lights for the band in '72 at the Roxy Theater in Northampton, Pa. The only time I had to work the footlights and the spotlight at the same time.
Left quite an impression I will never forget! Such a talented band way ahead of their time. Faith Healer, Hole In Her Stocking, Anthem (with the bagpipes), and Vambo (when Alex spray painted off the brick wall onto the theater curtains :-O).

I've been into this band since I was about 16 . Unfortunately I never got to see them live , but I've got most of their albums . I remember the day Alex Harvey died I was in my car & heard it on the radio , I pulled over to the side of the road with tears in my eyes . Such a shame - taken too young . RIP Alex ❤

In 1985, I used to buy weed from a man who owned a junk shop (as a front for his real business).
He used to insist we buy something from the shop to make it look legit.
I bought SAHB Live for a dollar and by the end of Faith Healer- I was hooked.
I also discovered Vinegar Joe and Savoy Brown through this shop.

I saw SAHB at Exeter University. We were all eagerly awaiting the band starting to play in the Great Hall there gazing up at the stage in anticipation. Some old geezer in a raincoat strolled across the stage and stared at the audience.. A bit unnerving on the whole. then it all became clear when the band started and there was the man in the raincoat without the raincoat but with the stripy shirt. Arms outstretched. The Faithhealer. Absolutely mesmeric. I've seen a lot of bands, but it was deffo one of the best gigs I ever had the pleasure to be at.
What a fantastic interview. I love the talent, intelligence and passion of the Scots. I grew up in England with a bunch of passionless cretins who are only interested in money and ego. I'm so glad for my Scottish freinds
A very interesting band with talented musicians and a unique front man Alex. Somewhere down the line, Alex Harvey band was underrated and got lost in the fast passing time. But worth watching and listening to their own style of music.

I saw SAHB at the Liverpool Empire in 1975 and it was the best gig I've ever been to, better than the Who at Charlton Athletic and Led Zeppelin at Earls Court. There was something visceral about Alex Harvey. He was a great performer and his band was superb. I can't believe he's been dead nearly forty years.

Ken, that was great. Good to hear him so cogent and reflective - I 'd always assumed from news reports he died somewhat consumed by his drink. Not the case clearly.
faz farrow we turned up to film a short interview intending to stay an hour or so and ended up staying all afternoon. At one point his wife came home and he obviously hadn’t told her we were coming, “we do this every Tuesday when you are at your mother’s’” he told her. Unforgettable time spent with a really remarkable man

The last gig I ever went to at the Free Trade Hall Manchester in the late 70's or early 80's was sensational Alex Harvey Band. He hacked up the stage with an axe during the gig. It was amazing I thought he'd never stop.
I had the fortunate luck to have seen The Sensational Alex Harvey Band in 1974 near Cleveland. I don’t think he made it to the USA much. Just so good. He climbed through ceiling tiles to start “ Framed” died way to young. Zal Ceminson way underrated guitarist. So ahead of their time. Blessed to have seen them!

My first major band to see was Yes at the Stoke City Football Ground, the line up was Ace, Gryphon, The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Yes. First time that I'd ever heard or seen SAHB and I was hooked, they were brilliant as they came on with the song Faith Healer and it just blew my mind.
Thanks Ken. This was great. I loved Alex and ‘his band’.... I have the vinyl Impossible Dream. Just seeing the cover transports me to a better place and a better time. I feel such a loss that he is not with us. I read somewhere that Zal shunned him at the end which I’m sure he regrets doing. A great Man is Alex.
