This is great for old Alex fans. I heard that Cleveland, OH bought more Alex Harvey albums than any other city? Never forgotten... Thanks you tube/Alex/Friends Rick POHL
The first SAHB song I heard was "There's no lights on the Christmas tree mother they;re burning big Louie tonight" after that I was hooked. I had seen Tear Gas several times in Buckhaven Miners Welfare in the late 60's probably and knew that they were a good live band but this took them to a different level. Rip Alex you are sorely missed.
I saw Teargas around the same time (1969/70) in a small hall in St Andrews. They were good. Then six years later the big one!! - The Who and SAHB playing at Celtic Park in 1976.
The Old Grey Whistle Test recordings of ‘Give My Compliments to the Chef’ and ‘Next’ are beyond belief. Harvey’s performance had me hooked, lined and sinkered at 13 years old ☺️ I’ve loved them ever since
I discovered Alex Harvey on the internet as a young man. He was performing with his rock band playing a song called I've been Framed at a festival, and it blew me away, big time!!!!😎
What a memory, after SAHB broke up Alex reformed a band, the drummer, Paul, played in a band at my 21st birthday, my best mate at the time, Mick, became tour manager and called me to say: " we need a roadie and minder". So off I went on a tour of Germany, Plus gigs in London and back to Germany to Nurnberg. Great times I'll never forget.
He was very charismatic. People would obey his commands without question. A bit like being around Hitler. Or Jesus Christ. But he was unfailingly kind, to fans.
Having grown up in the same town as Ted and Hugh McKenna (and briefly going out with their cousin as a teenager) , I had the wonderful good fortune of meeting Alex in the Ivanhoe Hotel , after one of his many gigs I went to at The Apollo , Glasgow . He was full of knowledge and advice about the music industry . It was truly a wonderful night . RIP, Alex , Ted , and Hugh 🖤
First band I ever saw …live supporting Slade . stoke on trent Victoria hall . My god that was a baptism of fire , then at stoke city ground and trentham gardens …top band
I saw them twice and cherish those times and days. Brilliant and unique. A sad evolution but never to be forgotten. Vambo, Faith Healer, Last of the Teenage Idols,Roman wall Blues.........Next live on.
i love alex harvey but iggy was first. i think he'll be more appreciated in the future. younger people do some serious deep dives for music.. how do you think i found him?
Good ones, check out Vic Chesnutt too, I guess he's not a "rocker" ir you wanna get genre specific, more singer / songwriter, but man his band rocked once in a while. the live version of 'Everything I Say' gets really heavy. And 'Flirted with you all my life' is one of the darkest songs I've ever heard. Also he was in a wheelchair, and still rocked as hard as he could.
Alex Harvey & Roky Erickson who headed the 13th Floor Elevators were both unique & extraordinary brilliant musicians. Sadly I totally missed seeing Alex Harvey live but I did see a late version of Roky Ericsson’s band live in London. An incredibly woke & joyous event it was.
Probably best talent scotland ever had. To Maggie Bell;must have.been traumatizing see that young man lose his life on stage Ive always rated you as a singer, every bit as good as lulu. All the best from portglasgow❤🏴
I saw SAHB open for Jethro Tull, here in Jackson,MS,in 1975. I had never heard of them. I was so impressed and in awe, that I walked out of the Tull set 3 songs in...SAHB could not be topped in winning the crowd over. Bought the live album he next day.
Me too, but saw them with Tull in Mobile. And same here…also had never even heard of them prior. What a great show! Went right out after that and bought the album “Tomorrow Belongs to Me.” I’m about to turn 67 next month, and still have it in my vinyl collection. 😊
i remember my uncle who was in the alex harvey band showing me a poster from hamburg and it was Alex at the top then gerry and the pacemakers and blah blah and at the bottom were the silver beetles .. ... The beatles to come
Alex was never a name dropper. He knew loads of famous people but never mentioned it. I asked him if he liked David Bowie and he replied "Some". He never mentioned the fact that David Bowie stayed with him in Finchley.
Alex Harvey doesn't need any "Hall of Fame" to justify his fame - anyone who ever saw SAHB knew he was unique and above such trivia! Earl's Court 1973 The Master "supported" Slade. Make no mistake - Slade were a a decent band. But they could never equal SAHB. xxxx
Does anybody know the name of the guitar tech who organised Ted's memorial concert in Wales? I met this guy at the police station in Reading three weeks ago but he left before I had a chance to get his number.
And every time Alex wrote a song about a girl, that was me. He wrote Dance to Your Daddy, for me. Because I was the first person to run to the front at a SAHB gig, and dance.
"A broken antler points the way to the still pond Where reflections of Bonnie Prince Charlie lie wounded in the Shallow water...." - The Tale Of The Giant Stoneater. / SAHB.
Hmmmm. 5:34 HAIR After an off-Broadway debut on October 17, 1967, at Joseph Papp's Public Theater and a subsequent run at the Cheetah nightclub from December 1967 through January 1968, the show opened on Broadway in April 1968 and ran for 1,750 performances. Simultaneous productions in cities across the United States and Europe followed shortly thereafter, including a successful London production that ran for 1,997 performances. It's odd how they jump from Alex supporting The Beatles in Scotland and then Germany, then suddenly jump to 1967. It's 1960 that he opens up for The Beatles (then known by another name) --- that's a 7 year jump in this biography.
Hi Thomas, my uncle is Andy McMaster from the motors, my mum was best friends with jimmy.. back in the 60s , 70s ., good times ,my mums names is Betty McMaster .
@@gordonhume4891 I went to see him performing in Manchester - must have been not long before he died. Small venue and not many there. And no-one seemed to much notice when he died
@@myfairhands There are many tributes to him in Glasgow , including a large oil painting of him at the side of the stage in the Clutha Bar , a small bust statue , and a memorial bench in The Peoples Palace Museum , and a memorial childrens playground on the site of the house he was born , in Govan. There is also an annual one day festival (SahbRock) , currently in its 14th year , held every October . It's current venue is Ivory Blacks in Glasgow .
This sadly starts with Alex in vaudville mode (Delilah).Which was a harbinger of worse times to come and eventually the breakup of the amazing SAHB...Tomorrow Did Belong to him,but sadly for a short while.Could've used a faith healer.Rip in peace.....
Yes I had no problem with the ‘Next’ cover, it was brilliant. Delilah doesn’t have enough substance as a song to warrant Alex Harvey’s attention. Just my opinion of course.
I think people generally liked seeing ‘Delilah’ played on TV etc. A) It was done in a humorous tongue in cheek way, and B) It was a kick in the pants to the old 'heartbreak' songs sung seriously by the likes of Tom Jones etc . That song by Alex probably kicked off the punk era.
Alex went to pieces when Bill Fehilly was killed in a plane crash. He said "My Captain, is dead". After losing the brother whom he taught to play guitar, and so feeling to blame for this, it was just too much sorrow to take, losing Bill as well. He took to drink in a big way and I feel that he just wanted to die really. I visited him after his first heart attack and he decided just to get up and to carry on working until he died. I did not like the way Trudy spoke to him sometimes. If he said something a bit paranoid, she would say, "We believe it because you believe it Alec". Like some holier than thou psychiatrist, you know? She was a mother figure, like Yoko Ono was with John Lennon.
