  • The driver side door of my CRV would not unlock; it acted as if something was stuck in the way. I replaced other things in the door until I found out that a SPRING was missing. Here is how to install and make your own spring to fix the door lock.
    *Disclaimer: I am not a mechanic. I will answer and inform to the best of my knowledge from my personal experiences and research.*

    Thank you for this video! Every video I’ve seen has been with civics as an example! Your demonstration on how to get to the actuator/lock mechanism without taking it out was extremely helpful!! Again, thanks!

    I thank you so much, I had the same problem with a friend's CRV, got a replacement spring at a hardware store, and works like a charm........just for reference, I used a long needle nose plier to put the spring on.........you saved me a lot of hassle with your video....

    Thank you so much for this video! The spring let go in my 2000 Crv and the door would not open from inside or outside. We removed the seat to get to the interior door panel and got it open. We removed the lower window track to get access to the latch and replaced the broken spring. Works great again!

      Hey!! My 98 had a similar issue. It once got stuck in lock while open, so I wasn’t able to shut my door. Another time it was stuck while shut. Now, I can lock and unlock it, but can’t open it from the inside. It’s driving me crazy. I may have to get in there too 😢

    If you're here to find out how to get your door open in the first place-here's the golden secret; You need to get the inner door panel off, I won't cover that here as others have that covered on youtube. Once you have the panel off, you need to remove the 2 x 10mm bolts that hold the outer door handle which are accessible from the inside. Slide the outer door handle back to release it. pull it out slightly, you will see two rods going to it, the lighter gauge one for the lock, and the thicker one that actually opens the door. The thicker one is the one you have to concentrate on. Normally the handle pushes down to open the door, but, when you pull it up it does the same thing the missing spring would have, and clears the mechanism so you can now unlock the door. In order to pull that rod upwards, the easiest way is to release that thicker rod from the outer door handle. If you look carefully you can see that that rod is held in place by a ball pressed into a nylon joint. This is easy to spot, that ball is 90* to the rod, at the top of the rod where it is threaded for adjustment. Take a wide standard screwdriver and pop the ball out. Jam the screwdriver in between the ball shaft and the nylon bushing, not between the nylon bushing and handle assembly or you might break the bushing. It takes a bit of jiggling, but once it's out you can now pull that thicker rod upwards to clear the mechanism, mimicking what the spring would do. Now you can unlock it by then pulling upward on the thinner rod, or use the electric door lock to unlock it. Once unlocked, push that same thicker rod downward and your door will open. My spring wasn't missing, but the mechanism was too gummed up for the spring to do it's job. I of course lubricated the lock mechanism to free it up for proper operation.
    You're welcome!

      So how do you get the door open if you can’t get the door panel off? It’s closed shut and can’t open the door at all. Not sure if it’s the spring, the actuator or what. Thank you

    • @getsmarter5412
      @getsmarter5412 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@loganarterburn464 Theres a center cosmetic strip just behind the front door. It runs from the floor to the ceiling. Open the back door, and start prying it off from the bottom, I believe it's just clipped in. The toughest part is that strip next to the front seat. just keep at it, it will come out. After that strip is gone, you can now take out the screws from the door pull. After taking out the small screw from the plastic insert where the actual door handle is, slide that insert either forward or backward to free it up, pulling out a bit reveals a rod and an electrical connector that need to be disconnected. Of course, unplug or remove the speaker. Now the panel is ready to be pulled out. Note on the other front door when open, where there is a plastic screw next to the dashboard that is hidden when the door is closed. This is the only screw you can't get to when the door is closed. But- start prying the panel off from the rear forward. You can pull the whole thing off except where that screw is. I used an 18" prybar between the panel and the frame of the door to pry that little plastic screw out. Voila, the panels off. Kind of a pain in the butt, but at least now you know it can be done. Good luck!

    I’m confused with putting the channel track back on. Should the metal track be wrapped over the rubber channel or inside it?! Because seems like it fits over not inside like the pics show
    *Update* metal track slides over rubber window channel. Little silicone spray or lithium grease helps slide up.

    Hi Andrew, I have the same problem, the driver's door is stuck and locked, can't open the door to disassemble it. How did you open your door?

    • @andrewlewis7025
      @andrewlewis7025  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was able to bang on the door with the heel of my hand just blow the door lock repeatedly as I was trying to turn key. Eventually the door unlocked. Sounds barbaric, but it wiggles the mech enough to allow lock toggle to raise. There is a video on a civic that showed how to take panel off with door shut. Looked like a major pain. Also, try taking ground off battery and try door lock manually. Some times that worked for me while I was having the problem. Good luck.

      I was able to remove the inner door panel with the door stuck closed as follows: Remove all the screws as Andy shows - there will be the one left that is inaccessible next to the dash. Then remove the pillar molding between the front and rear door. This is not difficult, you only have to unscrew the 14mm seat belt bolt, then carefully pry the molding loose. With the pillar molding removed you can carefully work a panel pry tool (fork shaped flat head) behind the door panel and pry it out far enough to lift it up over the window ledge. Be careful not to damage your panel. That will allow you to get tools inside the door. I took a long flat bar of aluminum (3 ft. long or so) and pushed down on the connection where the outside door rod meets the latch mechanism. That opened the door.

    • @lesterevans6523
      @lesterevans6523 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      With the door locked, I was able to give a hard jerk on the outside door handle, then turn the key to the unlocked position. This may take a few tries, but it did work for me. I have used this method for several months, not knowing what was causing this problem. But thanks to Andy's video, I now know what is causing this problem, and how to fix it. Thank You Andy !

    I just did this job, but used a pick to replace the spring in situ. There is no need to remove the window track, lock or anything else. th-cam.com/video/ReubT80oS4E/w-d-xo.html

    Does this “spring” connect to the bar that connects to the interior door handle? My bar is very loose & I can’t open my door from the inside. I’ve replaced the interior handle already, but noticed the bar isn’t snapping back like it once did. I took the panel off yesterday & cant see any issues, and didn’t see a spring laying in the door either. Even when manually pulling the bar it won’t open the door.

    • @andrewlewis7025
      @andrewlewis7025  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The spring suspends the lock mech. When it’s broken, the mech stays down. This prevents you from being able to lift/disengage the lock. Has nothing to do with the bar that goes to interior door panel door panel. Good luck. When in doubt, reference the other door.

    • @siouxzq3713
      @siouxzq3713 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andrewlewis7025 ty for replying. I’m still having to open it from the outside. The bar that attaches to the interior handle has lost all, what I assume to be, spring. I used to have to pull it to get it into the handle and now it freely moves. I can’t see what it attaches to from my driver side to know what broke or what to order to repair.

    • @andrewlewis7025
      @andrewlewis7025  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I took entire mechanism out ( outer door handle and lock mech as one unit). That’s when I realized I was missing a spring to the lock mech. If your door lock toggle will move freely up and down, then the spring is not your issue. I would reference other door mech, even if you have to remove to get enough exposure to see what’s broken or disconnected. Gonna be a pain. Share what you find to help others. Good luck!
