Hey everyone!
While doing my research I realized that most camera companies and even phone manufacturers do this, BUT the BIG DIFFERENCE is that most of them include this information in the technical specifications page, where you can find the true dimensions and the actual size. HOWEVER, as of Saturday, June 29th, 2024, DJI makes no reference to the actual size of the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 sensor, which is much smaller than their "1-inch sensor" claim, not even on the specifications page. In this video, I dive into the details and uncover the real dimensions of the Osmo Pocket 3 sensor. If DJI updates their website after this video, we’ll know they heard us! This is for you, the consumer. Don't forget to like, subscribe, and hit that notification bell for more in-depth tech reviews and insights.

The BIG DIFFERENCE I've found while diving into this topic, is that although most camera companies and even phone manufactures use this outdated terminology, MOST still include the actual dimensions on the technical data page (like the Sony example at the end). However, when I made this video, DJI did not have any mention of the actual size, not on their website and not even on their technical data page. This is meant to both entertain, and inform as well as resist blatant omission of information. The device itself is fantastic, and produces a good quality image.
lol, I couldn't find anything resembling humor in this video. But besides that good video, thumbs up
@TheNitpicker thanks Mr nit pick 🙂. Appreciate you! 🫡 I hope that earned me a sub too! 😜
We don’t care. The quality is good
Fair enough I can respect that. The quality is indeed fantastic. Lots in here seem to care about it tho.
such an underrated channel man! I gave you a sub. And I massively enjoyed the video.
This means a lot coming from the community! Appreciate you 💯! Thanks for the comment and good vibes! 🫡
I knew about this sensor size bs and like u I wish cameras companies will switch to an accurate representation. That been said this isn’t a DJI issue and props to their customer support in always listening and answering users questions.
Yes, props to their customer support for providing the information, I think I will include that in my pinned comment! 🙌🏽 thanks for your opinion.
Think of it this way: here in the USA when you build a house, you use a piece of lumber that is referred to as a "2 by 4". That name comes from the fact that decades ago this particular piece of lumber measured 2 inches by 4 inches by whatever length you needed. However in modern times the lumber is actually slightly smaller in size but is still called a 2 by 4. Not a perfect analogy I know because we all know about the difference and the name is taken for granted. But the lumber still works and does the job...just like the "1 inch sensor". Is it deceptive? Yes. Does it change the quality of the video coming out of my Pocket 3? No. I happen to like mine and I'll continue to use it because it works for my needs. I hope that doesn't make me a bad person for not getting hung up on sensor size...but honestly, who out there that knows ANYthing about cameras really thought the Osmo Pocket 3 had a 1 inch sensor in it? It's just not physically possible.
If you watched to the you’d see me saying that it’s still amazing and I will continue to use it for my content. It’s still a very good tools after all.
All camera companies are doing this.
Indeed the are, some more transparent than others!
They got me every year back from 2016 to 2019. I used to change the biggest and the greatest in the past. Not anymore! My friend loves her iPhone 11 and would not upgrade for anything.
I was wondering how they fit something 1 inch inside that tiny gimbal
Yea it’s just to hype it up.
This term was used with the old Nikon 1 system. Still amazing for the size compared to phone sensors and packaged with a gimbal is still priced great.
Yes it’s great, I’m taking it with no on a day trip currently!
Really interesting, thanx! I calculated with the 1 inch sensor that the focal lenght of the pocket 3 (which is 20mm) is 54mm transferred to fullframe. What do you think is the real focal length in fullframe now, with the new crop-factor?
Hay Anton, thanks for commenting, I'm not sure exactly what you are saying. Basically the 20mm f2.0 lens on the OSMO is equivalent to 20mm F5.6 when compared to FullFrame. It's still a 20mm focal Length.
@@avicreates Maybe I am wrong, but I thought that the equivalen from crop to fullframe affects also the focal lenght. So for example a 50mm on a 1.6 crop works as a 80mm calculatet in FF. Look: www.google.com/search?q=focal+length+and+crop+factor
The majority of People want Great Quality and that's it...
Rey, your one chip challenge video was funny to watch! That’s some crazy heat, as to your point, the quality of the DJI OP3 is good indeed.
@@avicreates Thank you my man I appreciate it.
I hope you had a lot of laughs.
But I recorded it on my iPhone 13 Pro Max. 😉
I really want to know that on what basis DJI or any camera company says it is 1" inches sensor..??
Old terminology from the 1950s. The website cine d has a good article about it.
Why is micro four third missing from your chart?
Aww noooooo. My bad I missed the M43, Sorry bout that! 🫡
@@avicreates It's not just you, many of people are forgetting about M43.
@@cryptofitnessandgaming-cfg well i can’t say I’ve ever really messed with m43 , had a gh4 back in the day for a bit. Idk, would be nice to see a pro osmo with a M43 Lens mount!
It has the same sensor as the Sony zv1. That’s what matters
Slight little difference in size, but yes ! 🙌🏽
Very good video. I like the camera, but it's really nice to know what the actual dimensions of the sensor are. 👍👍👍
Cheers it is indeed a great camera, gonna do a review soon, I appreciate your comment! Thanks for stopping by! 🙌🏽
are there any camera's claiming 1 inch that are actually 1 inch out of interest?
Well they don’t claim it but Yes, the diagonal measurement of an APS-C sensor, (crop sensor) which is approximately 28.2 mm, is close to 1.1 inches. This is a bit larger than one inch, which is approximately 25.4 mm. But they don’t claim it in advertising.
I think what you broke down here using calculations was a great explanation and I can appreciate that. However, I don’t think that DJI’s specs sell us on a device that doesn’t produce a high quality, 1” sensor-like 4K image.
Now if they marketed the camera this way and the real world results show the camera producing much less than 4K resolution images that are comparable to a true 1” sensor with the appropriate aperture setting, I would be GREATLY concerned. Aside from that, this seems like it was a well researched and thought out video.
Thanks, appreciate your comment. I still love the camera, it's my go to for like run and gun street interviews etc. from pocket to record its fast with great quality. Be sure to like and Sub, looking to do a review on this soon.
Wow i learn new thing here. Thanks..
You are most welcome my friend, don’t forget to like and subscribe if you’d like! 👍🏽
Most “1-inch” sensor cameras are around the same size. For example, the Sony rx100 mark vii has a SENSOR TYPE 1.0-type (13.2mm x 8.8mm) Exmor RS CMOS sensor, aspect ratio 3:2. So either your estimated size is wrong or all 1-inch sensor cameras are not actually “1-inch”
Yup my estimated size- written in blue was a bit off but pretty close, the red is the specs from DJI themselves. 12.7mm c 9.6mm 4:3 aspect ratio.
I also make reference to what u are saying here at the end.
The patent filing of these device designs should be standardized to diagonal size if not already.
Yea there should be a standard I agree.
i mean the quality is the quality, but it shouldn't be legal to miss advertise as it is illegal in my and most other countrys.
Yea it does feel shady. It’s not honest marketing. I agree with you, and I can’t wrap my head around why it is allowed.
Very interesting insight. Thanks you! I hope that DJI has watched this video and will consider how they represent products. It comes down to whether the company wants you to trust them vs. instilling trust through actions.
Sony has matured enough at this point that they probably think nobody can compete with them, so they are not concerned with being more transparent. It's not going to dissuade someone from buying Sony.
DJI is trying to compete with questionable competitors, so they are more likely to say 'just trust us' and push the marketing hype so they can get the sale. Hopefully DJI is maturing and will feel confident enough to be more accurate and transparent in their marketing.
Yes Conrad, you said it perfectly! I appreciate your perspective on the subject. 🙌🏽
If it's not 1-inch, they shouldn't say it is. That's misleading. However, as it's being promoted as a much larger sensor than the previous Pocket2, it would be interesting to know the actual dimensions of the P2 sensor. Maybe it's not as big a jump as we assume
Yea , I agree, the jargon should be dropped, I find it so deceptive that the photo on the website is a sensor and the number 1 is over it, maybe I’d look into the matter and make another video comparing the 2. Thanks for stopping by, don’t forget to like and sub. 🙂
I check it out, it’s close to double the size of the previous version, so that’s quite the difference.
Did you record this on the pocket 3?
Nah recorded on the Sony ZV-E1
@@avicreates lol, awesome Brother, thanks for sharing.
@@terryshrives8322 anyday my friend 🫡
@@avicreates What's the sensor on your Sony ZV-E1?
@@jackies35 its the same as the FX3 a full frame sensor. It just has more AI and software built into the camera.
They should be more transparent so sure.
But I actually do not care about sensor size if the camera creates pleasing images. And actually OP3 delivers good image quality. So I do not have any complains there.
Maybe except the fact that this 5.6 DoF equivalent is sometimes annoying (because it's fixed). For example you cannot record your face and show the surroundings behind you, because they will be blurred if are far enough.
Indeed performance wise it’s a gem!
5.6 aperture you mean, a 600mm lens at f5.6 has a drastically different DoF than a 20mm lens at f5.6.
@@DanielLeivaCardozo Check dof calculator. For the same crop DoF is exactly the same (for example portrait shot). The background compression is totally different, DoF is almost the same (slight difference is where the focus is in relation to the subject - behind and in front of - but this difference is minimal and usually in focus plane is the same depth).
@@JoATTech I was 99.9% sure I was right but gave you the benefit of the doubt and checked a DoF calculator online and now I'm 200% sure I'm right.
Pick any sensor size, pick 5.6 as an aperture and 10 feet for the subject distance. Now try that at 20mm and at 100mm and tell me how much of a DoF you get for both of them. My original comment said 600mm but to be able to use the same subject distance I'm using 100mm which still proves my point but with a less dramatic difference.
@@DanielLeivaCardozo I'm referring to the same crop/framing of the subject (for example portrait), not the same distance from the sensor.
These are two different scenarios.
For the same crop the subject will be at totally different distance, to create the same look. Comparing at the same distance gives totally different looks so nothing to compare really.
I like my Pocket 3 and the one inch censer delivers ideal results from all different situations including theatre stage recording.
Yea I used it at a couple events so far, gotta say it’s been great!
Transparency would be good on the part of DJI. But you gave measurements in mm and cm but not what percentage of an inch those are (or I missed that). Clearly the lens is so tiny it couldn’t actually be an inch. I appreciated your clarifying this. I have the pocket 2 and 3. Mostly I noTice ease of use improvements on the pocket 3. I need to compare footage shot under equal conditions.
So it’s about 0.63 of an inch. At the 0:45 sec mark theres a photo with a generic “1-inch sensor” even tho the height and width tend to vary, the diagonal is always 16mm approximately.
The sensor size when compared to the pocket 2 is about double. The pocket 3 still gives some stellar results for being a small sensor. Thanks for stopping by, like and subscribe if you’d like 🙂
@@avicreates Thanks for getting back to me quickly. I recently shot some footage with both in the same place, so I will look for the quality differences. Agreed Pocket 3 gives some great results. I have subscribed!
@sigridlee3743 cheers, 😁🫡
This is why Sony almost ALWAYS calls their "1 inch" sensors "1 inch-type" sensors. Yes, virtually every piece Sony marketing material uses the word: "type" ( 1inch-type ) Sony's legal department makes SURE that Sony keeps itself out of legal jeopardy. Other sensor makers are not this careful.
Right on! 👍🏽
I thought it was like how actual storage space on a memory card or disk drive is always smaller than advertised. However, I guess storage devices can justify it as it is the actual overall storage space. Even though you can't use some of it due to overheads or other system files - it's actually there. I thought these 1" sensors had some area on the sensor which wasn't accessible because it was round or something like that. But I guess now that's not so much the case. Then the sensor isn't any more 1 inch than a foot is the actual length of a person's foot!
Yea, one thing I’d like to see is a setting that gives you the ability to record use the full sensor. That way you can utilize the footage for both horizontal and vertical formats.
It wasn't always that way. Originally storage resellers advertised the total possible size, and probably rounded up from there. Then consumers filed a class action saying that the actual 'usable' size was much smaller and the marketing was misleading. I think that DJI customers are happy enough with their product that there probably won't be a class-action.
No, it's not a surprise at all. I have experienced the worst issues with every camera, and each year, I buy the next big thing and get the same bad results. Never again! However, I love the output on the Pocket 3; I hope and pray no one hits DJI with a lawsuit for false advertising.
Hi, it's a real great little camera indeed, gotta say I love it. I doubt they will get a law suit about this tho, if they ever decide to change anything, it'll be to just put the dimensions on their spec page lol. that about it. Looking forward to your like and Sub! =)
Very interesting! Corporations being transparent and telling the truth in 2024, in reality would be ideal, but knowing that sales and shareholder value reign supreme, doing anything to boost sales is what happens. Nice video brotha!
Absolutely! It’s all about the bottom line! Thanks for the comment broski. 🙌🏽
Why not create a teardown for that? It’s more transparent for every details
haha Honestly if my channel was bigger I would have done that 100%. be sure to Like and Sub so you won't miss that video if it ever comes.
It’s not like the Action 4 can maintain a level horizon in real life action scenarios yet it’s marketed as a feature. The 1 inch sensor size discrepancies should be common knowledge by now and it’s an industry wide misleading specification. The Pocket 2 was already a great camera and every bit helps in sensor size making the Pocket 3 an even better camera
It’s a great little device!
So they are leveraging industry jargon. I would prefer that they were more transparent with the specs. But that's just the nature of advertising. But it is good that they are forthcoming when pressed on the matter. With all of that said though, I come to a similar conclusion as you: the OP3 outputs a high quality image in spite of the size of the sensor. In fact an image that has secured it as my B cam next to my Sony A6700. Add in the quality of the audio it can record without an external mic (after a little post production) and the gimbal of course and you have a fantastic little camera that punches way above its class.
It’s an absolutely amazing device. Like I gotta say it feels like Christmas Day every time I use it lol 😁. It’s my BTS camera and daily driver cause its quality and convenience is great. But yes they are garnishing the industry terms to boost their brand.
I guess the Air 2s is about the same size as well then..
Yes you will be right on that.
Well it is well known practices in camera or electronic industry. When a vendor mint a measure, next must follow or look bad vs competitor. If you like the topics, pls continue with medium format size, iso so on...
Sure thing, what else will you like for me to dive into?
I do think that they should include the actual specs and you should not have to reach out the support to find out. But is that a Trini accent I hear 🙌🏾🙌🏾. Great info but the accent heavily influenced the sub 😆
Hahaha yes my Trini’s, love meeting you all on here!! Thank you nice to meet you! 🫡😁

Do I have to know this. I finished the video and I forgot already
Well…..you might wanna get a cognitive test! 😁
No way (((((
But how it make so good quality of video and light at night ?
Well for night it’s internal processing on the chip. This is getting really good as chips become more powerful.
A 2x4 is not. 2" pipe is not. That's how the USA rolls.
Same thing they do with their drones. The air 3 supposedly has a 48 mp camera but that’s a lie .
Yea it’s so bogus because we see the value in the device still, we see the good quality we will in most cases want the item. Can you imagine if manufacturers advertised 35mm and we got an APSC sensor. We would be outraged. This one flew under the radar for quite a while.

I don’t care either! 😁
this is a misrepresentation of true facts why are they allowed to claim a certain specification when the truth is totally different. this needs to be taken to court and a test case made, why cant they just be honest and tell the truth , no they hide behind marketing bull shit which we know to be lies
dji manipulate all their marketing. The 1" air 2s sensor is 13.05x8.82. Real camera companies leave themselves a linguistic out, always have, not so with dji- they brazenly lie. Consumers vs real photographers is the real issue, the former are like sheep to the slaughter, the latter verify with sources.
You couldn’t have said it better, a few people came at me ready to defend DJI in the comments and didn’t seem to understand the point I was making. I’m sure if they bought a mirrorless APSC or FF and the sensor got something smaller they wouldn’t accept that, but for some reason it’s “ok” when it comes to smaller sensors. My real issue is the fact that you can’t find the specs online, other camera companies still list it and call it a “type” sensor. Anyway Thanks for your comment! Appreciate you! 🫡
If you add the diagonal and height it's about 25.4mm lol
Hhahahaa 🫡. Indeed it is! I hope it was a good enough video for you to like and sub!
Why would you call out a TH-camr for it? Of course they go by whatever specs the company outs out there.
Call them out, so they become educated. It also makes for good engagement.
@@avicreates that wouldn't be calling them out. They are not lying or hiding anything, at least not purposely lying.
@DanielLeivaCardozo true, what’s I’m saying, it’s meant to be more of a light tone. Hence the video snippets, I suppose not everyone thinks it’s more on the jokingly side, Lol
If I buy a full frame camera, I need a full frame sensor. Done
Yes my friend! Exactly! Support with a like and sub!
It’s the same size as the DJI Action 4😮
Well look at that, I learnt something new!! It’s still a lovely piece of gear tho. I look fwd to their even bigger sensor lol. Like and sub if you wanna show some good vibes.
Doesn't take a genius to guess the sensor is most likely 4:3. 😂
😁 oh it’s genius indeed 😁😁.
Lol...How can 15,9mm diagonal can be translated to 1 inch, when in reality it's 0.69 inch? 🤣
😂 then you gotta read a few paragraphs to understand why 1 inch isn’t 1 inch, this as from the 1950’s, it’s 2024 man. Let’s get with the program. I love the OMP3 tho it’s still a great camera.
Hi. It's really good to have more people like you digging deep in the specs. This way, maybe, will make companies to think twice before they will promote any products. But,.... even if is not a true 1'' sensor this camera gives me in any settings very good quality videos. I also have an DJI action 4 which no matter what settings I try to deal with, the image quality is way worse compared with pocket 3. Pocket 3 is so good that is almost close to my full-frame sony a7r v with a 3rd party lens. Anyway, Thank you for coming with this video. Regards.
Hey, I agree, it’s a stellar device. I find myself using this more than my FX3 or ZVE1. I don’t think they need to exaggerate anything to get good sales, either that or they start using the word “type” and excluding the dimensions in the spec sheet, something I think they should include so it’s a little more transparent.
@RubberontheroadIndonesia Rick, stop spamming comments, don’t you have videos to film for your channel?
Wenn ein Unternehmen damit wirbt einen 1“ Sensor zu haben, dann sollte sie auch einen 1“ Sensor haben und NICHT eine Art 1“ Sensor….in meinen Augen ist das Betrug.
Yes Frank, I say so too! How do I sell you a a piece of what I’m advertising lol
Anyone who is at all familiar with cameras knows how the sensors are named and compared. Anyone who is not familiar with camera will not care because the whole concept is meaningless to them. Simple. It's hardly a lie. Can you name any camera with such a sensor which is not described as a one inch sensor?
Woah i didnt know that. This whole time was BS 😂😂
Whole time bro, big pile of donkey BS 💩 lol. The thing is that the device itself is great so I don’t think they even needed to BS is cause we would have still gone out and gotten it. Lol . Atleast put the specs on the spec sheet on the website too!

I am pretty happy with the lens and sensor on the Pocket 3. I don’t love much else. The gimbal is jumpy. The whole thing feels so fragile that I don’t even want to use it. It gets very hot for long takes. The flippy screen is probably going to break, and you cannot use it as a dash camera because it will get confused and track stuff in front of it.
I would be very happy if they put this sensor and lens in a box, with a good fan and the ability to power for long takes. A basic POV/kickoff camera. I want a GoPro, without the problems that come with a GoPro being waterproof.
Hey Bill, you know I really do like the device, but to your point, I believe for the price it could have been built a little sturdier. And yes I’ve had a few times it felt quite hot. Especially if charging and filming. Thank for your input. Feel free to show some love by liking and subscribing!

@RubberontheroadIndonesia you ok Rick?
