How GOOD was Didier Drogba?

  • Africa has produced some of the most iconic strikers of all time in the past few decades.
Amongst the talent that the continent has had to offer, you’ll often hear names such as Samuel Eto’o, George Weah and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, to name a few.
However only one of these players has ever directly contributed towards ending a civil war within their country, while also being known as the ultimate big game players out there. Otherwise known as a “clutch" player.
    That man is Didier Drogba.
Highly renowned for his brute strength, pace, ball striking technique and overall selflessness, Drogba was truly one of a kind.
In his incredible career he has won every trophy on offer at club level and did so in style.
But perhaps you can’t recall how prolific this man once was. After all, he has been retired for a few years now.
So, with that being said, how good was Didier Drogba, really?

Whoever claims that Drogba wasn`t a top tier striker doesn`t know football. This man changed how the game was played in England, everyone had striker partnerships until Drogba came along, The man was so well rounded, he had it all, pace, strength aerial presence he could lead the line himself. He was always a handful and a nightmare even for the best defenders, physically there weren`t many that could match Didier. His score in finals speaks for itself, he was born for the big occasion.

He was one of the greatest players of 2005-2015s era. Simply because he was a one man forward force. He could break defences with his runs; he could break defences with his back to the goal; he could break defences in the air; and, he could break defences with clutch goals. He was everything that a center forward needed to be. He could lead the line. I judge how good a striker is based on their ability to break a defence, and Drogba was a genius at that.

And of course, as with Barcelona in the semis, Bayern were all over us and we played with our backs to the wall relying on Cech to save us. Thanks for making this. You didn't say too much about how he terrorised defences with his speed, power, heading ability, ball control etc
Or his contribution to defending at corners, being a talisman and determined winner - as a Chelsea fan, I'd say he was immense

How good he was? He score goals with head, left foot, right foot, close shot, long shot, free kick, chest, leg, you name it. Defend to all corners, always score important goals on big matches. Both outstanding performance for club and country. He is so good as a football player as well as humble human being.

Didier Drogba is one of the few strikers I remember since my childhood - I think you could have mentioned his elbow injury in 2010 (which I have seen at the Tourbillon Stadium in Switzerland when I was a child) while playing for Cote d'Ivoire against Japan. It was what made him almost miss the 2010 South Africa World Cup! I think his carreer would have taken a VERY different turn had he missed the World Cup in 2010.

For the youth of today, if you wanted a lone target man/ playmaking centre forward to lead a team's frontline forward trident in today's modern pressing game, that would be Didier Drogba.
Pretty much what most managers like Deschamps/Klopp sees in Giroud/Firmino respectively. Drogba, however, was levels better.
Didier was as strong as 2 top center backs, domineering in the air, had the nimble feet of a ballerina, magnetic ball control, 2 footed, cracking shot power, high work rate & pacey, clinical on the biggest moments, & great off pitch attitude/persona w/ leadership.
He was a midfield maestro in a defender's body playing as the striker. A centre back pair's nightmare & a manager's dream.
Unshakeable on the defensive line and when even on ball which freed up so much space for wide forwards or late midfield runners.
Off-ball he would tussle with the opposition defense line, get thrown a long pass & stick it somehow then release or anchor for a teammate then pivot to the danger box.
His goal tally -the primary kpi for a striker - does not reflect his true ability since he contributed so many more intangibles and allowed teammates to flourish.
He has a golden boot to prove he can be a top scorer when needed be but his primary function at Chelsea was to be the attacking conduit.
Cherry on the top, man was venomous in big games - cup finals & derbies.
Any true football fan cannot hate this iconic player as he played pure beautiful game.

Back in the late 1990s to early 2000s, Wenger's Arsenal always seemed to have a hex over us such as that 3-2 win in 1999 with Kanu - although as the bigger club the refs were biased and I remember a 0-0 under Vialli when Sol Campbell got away with 2 brazen penalties. Our one success being Vialli's first match as manager in the League cup semi-final second leg. Ranieri never ever managed to beat Arsenal until the very last game in the Champions league QF second leg - although we had again been cheated when we drew 2-2 at Highbury in the FA Cup in (I think) Lampard's first match for CFC - after a Gronkjaer goal was wrongly given as offside.
I thus hated Arsenal more than I hated Man United as we often beat Man United. Then along came Mourinho and Drogba and we never lost a match against Wenger when Drogba played - and I don't think Mourinho lost a match to him - and walloped AFC 6-0 in Wenger's 1,000 game in charge!

Didier drogba is the real definition of a striker i have never seen a man so well rounded that he take on and break down a whole defense entirely on his own and he showed in his game that he is beyond a poaching striker like shearer and the likes he does extremely well with his back to goal and his hold up play is just magnificient.

I used to watch a lot of football back when Drogba was playing and he was one of my favourite players. The footage here doesn't really do him justice and neither do his stats. As someone else in the comments put it, his ability to "break a defence" was phenomenal. He was a wrecking ball but he was also very skilful.
