there's a comedian named James Acaster, and in his recent ish show Cold Lasagne Hate Myself 1999, during the start he talked about how loads of other comedians just slag off trans people when they want to seem cool, and how it's obviously undeserved and a s---ty thing to do, and it was really nice to be spoken about in a positive light, similar as to in the clip!
It’s rare that someone can make jokes about the LGBTQ+ community without coming off like an arsehole, that’s one of the reasons I like joe. He understands the struggle and never punches down. He finds the humour in the absurd, and shows people that being different is ok.

Whilst figures such as Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera were important to the modern movement, it bothers me greatly that they've been deified in place of Stormé DeLarverie. It's romantic to think that an African American and Latinx American transgender woman were the start of it all, but it's erasing the history of Stormé, a mixed African American+European American LESBIAN. Lift up all people and honour history. It's surely not too big of an ask...right?

I know where you're coming from when you say bi is an attraction to two genders but that's not strictly true. Bisexuality is an attraction to more than one gender, which is why pan comes under the bi umbrella. I'm bi and I'm definitely attracted to both men and women, and since realising I'm bi my attraction has grown to include non-binary and genderfluid people too. But this doesn't mean I'm pan. I've never liked the word pansexual for my identity, it just doesn't fit me. But if someone does prefer it I'm not going to judge them.

Hey Guys. I don't want to offend you but I just don't understand why people say Bisexuality isn't the attraction to two gender. "Bi" literally mean two in latin. I heard it multiple times that it now means the attraction to more than one gender. If you want to say that, a word like "polysexual" would be more accurate. I Just call myself pan because I don't like to reaffirm the assumption gender is a binary thing by using the word "bisexual". I mean if you don't like pan there is also queer... I don't get why the word bisexual is used if you one doesn't think gender is binary... I'm sorry if that was offensive, maybe I just think to literal... If someone could explain their perspective I would love it to read it and maybe understand it a bit more :)
@@tach-ich-bins9730 I would just say English, like most languages, is fickle and consequently words don't always follow their prescriptive, literal, and etymological meaning. Can we come up with words with more precise etymology? Sure. But what's the point when we already have a word that's generally understood to have that same meaning? If anything you'll confuse people more. To me, a lot of this is more of a linguistic debate about prescriptivism vs descriptivism. This all being said, I can respect that there are practical differences between bi and pan. I just don't see that difference as being based around the inclusivity of people outside the gender binary.
@@roge0 Thanks for the answer. Sometimes I think you have to use new words and confuse people to be inclusive of all people because some words excluded people historically. Confused people can learn and understand if you give them time. I'm German so I'll try to explain what I mean by an German example I hope it's relatable. Sinti and Roma were often called "Zigeuner" by German people. That word is attached with a lot of negative stereotypes and is now rightly considered discriminatory. We also have a paprika-sauce we call/called "Zigeuner-sauce". When people talk about that sauce they don't want to discriminate they just want to discuss the sauce. However, the word in itself is discriminatory so they are discriminating against sinti and roma by using the Z-Word and thereby reaffirming certain stereotypes. I think one could argue that the word bisexual historically excluded everyone who dosen't identifies strictly male or female. So maybe we should not use it anymore. I'm not sure wether that applies here. I just think it's not as easy as just stating "Bisexual means the attraction to more than two genders.", since not everyone agrees to that statement who uses that word. I don't want to call everyone who uses it discriminatory I just think it's a complex discussion worth having. I hope I'm not annoying everyone here. Ps. Now the sauce is often called Paprika-sauce from Hungary (Paprikasoße ungarischer Art - My translation probably isn't perfect).

I appreciate that he called pansexuality a type of bisexuality because as someone who identifies primarily as bisexual (for many reasons beyond just the plain definition) but pretty much fits the definition of pansexual as well, I get really annoyed when pan people try to explain the difference and they wind up defining bisexuality in ways that most bisexuals don't.
I’m pan but usually say bi in the same way I’m pescatarian but say I’m vegetarian. The majority of the time the person asking doesn’t need the specifics and I’m tired of defining things when I could use a similar enough word they already know
So true !! I had someone ask me "so what's your preference?" recently. And I was like "huh? Oh I don't have one" and this person (who did not identify as bi) said to me "well you have to have one, otherwise you are pan. Bi is just pan with a preferrence". Ridiculous.

Having lived much of my life enduring the arrogance, hypocrisy and bigotry of people of faith, either directly or via laws drawn up under the disproportionate influence of the church, I have witnessed the selective application of a convenient interpretation of morality in sharp focus. In recent times alone, take the example of the millions of people who have or will die of AIDS in sub-saharan Africa because of the Catholic churchs stance on condoms, or let’s take the institutionalised rape and torture of children across the globe in church run schools, two graphic examples of the how people, empower by their arrogant belief in their infallibility, have inflicted incalculable harm on others. Fortunately religion is in decline in most western cultures, not only in the numbers of people who attend their weekly indoctrination but also in the numbers of people who identify as religious. A truely civilised world, we’re decisions are made based on evidence, logic and science and not on some ramblings in an old book written by people who didn’t know where the sun went at night, is something we can all hope for. i keep coming back to this video because it explains so many contemporary lgbtq+ issues, from the corporate interests looking to make a profit by focusing on the marketable queer people (which are determined as marketable by mostly straight cis people), and not to actually center our issues and rights, to fetishes and kinks being minimized in pride events and culture because it makes straight people/allies/corporations uncomfortable, to the focus on gay men, primarily white, attractive, and cis gay men during pride at the expense of lesbian/bi/pan/trans/ace/aro/nb and other lgbtq people from gaining visibility, and the diminishing of actual queer issues from the public sphere to focus on a "celebration", particularly when it comes to anti-trans legislation/gnc issues. all of these issues are relevant to the lgbtq community, but joe lycett both acts as a guide for straight people to begin to recognize these issues and for queer people to laugh about them, and the jokes are never at the expense of the community. this is way too long but i love this video so much and thought too much about it

Basically joe just put into words in how I describe myself being pansexual, yes attraction is part of it but ultimately its personality that attracts me to my boyfriend.
Exactly, I’m panromantic/asexual but I feel physical attraction to people mainly because of an aspect of their personality that I find attractive. I knew I wasn’t straight but I didn’t exactly identify with being bisexual; pansexual/panromantic seemed like a much better fit.
In my experience people who use bisexual are often a bit older? It seems like the younger generation is using pan more. Even if the people who use bi that I know (34 and older) wouldn't exclude non-binary people or are very hung up on the gender binary. There's a big overlap in what people describe as their attraction. It's just the word that was in most common use, and that was hard enough for people to accept anyway.
I'm not part of the lgbtq+ community as I'm cis and straight, but I just wanted to say that you are all beautiful. If you identify as a man, or a woman, or anything in between, I strongly believe you should be seen and treated as such. You should be allowed to marry, to adopt and raise a family. You should be free to wear a skirt one day and a jockstrap the next if it makes you happy. You are all beautiful and I hope that you are all surrounded by people who love you for who you are and who you are becoming.
@@mmmmmmm4269 it's not the same thing. If I was born female and am male now, the statement "I am male" is still true. Cis specifies that my birth-assigned gender is the same as my "true" gender. I feel that it is important to specify that as I am speaking from someone who never had to live through the struggles of discovering their real gender identity. The word cisgender is in the dictionnaries, so it is a "thing". You might find Orwell's "Newspeak" more palatable, but I and others do not; therefore, despite your appreciated if unsolicited recommendations, I will use the existing term as liberally as I see fit.

as funny as joe is it's incredibly motivating to hear someone in his position of influence being so vocally supportive for an issue with pride that i'm so personally exhausted by. trans people (and most of the other letters in LGBTQ+) are totally forgotten about during pride because they're not "safe" enough for a brand to support, which of course shows exactly the true exclusive reason why brands "celebrate" pride in the first place, it's just for PR and literally nothing more. joe ripping them apart here does more good for people like me than most cis people will probably ever know.

This guy just opened my eyes. As a person who lived in Berlin for 17 years I was so confused when I met in Berlin Mitte a group of people wearing dog masks and leather outfits having each other on a leash. I just thought it happens. Nothing to odd about it. I once saw a men wearing nothing but a bit of gold glitter which was only on his dick. But now I'm sure they went to the convention this men mentioned. Once on a unrelated convention someone just told me: "hold this" and it was a leash with a human attached to it. Thinking now about it it was a bit weird but I was dressed up as a vampire with a rather odd group of cosplayeres so it was kind of normal. Once got hugged by someone who was more covert in fake blood then anything else. Didn't think twice about that.
I'm not sure what you're getting at. You want people who join your community (LGBTQ+, I assume) to be a part of it, but to do that you're excluding people who prefer a different identity than the one you use. Pansexual and bisexual do not affect who the person is, they are just words. It is you who are setting people apart by sorting them into categories when there's absolutely no need to do so.

If you noticed to correlation with the approximate arrival of COVID-19 in the West, give yourself five marks. 😉 I’ve seen Joe Lycett on more than once on several of them, my favorite of his appearances were on QI and The Graham Norton Show. I thought he was smart and funny. I liked him, not the least because though he got in some zingers, there was nothing mean-spirited about him. As a school bullying survivor, that means a lot to me. Since watching him here, he is now on my list of favorite humans. I do want to give this little warning though: Watching Joe Lycett while holding an open, nearly full canister of coffee may be hazardous to your kitchen floor. 😁

Whilst figures such as Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera were important to the modern movement, it bothers me greatly that they've been deified in place of Stormé DeLarverie. It's romantic to think that an African American and Latinx American transgender woman were the start of it all, but it's erasing the history of Stormé, a mixed African American+European American LESBIAN.
Lift up all people and honour history. It's surely not too big of an ask...right?

I know where you're coming from when you say bi is an attraction to two genders but that's not strictly true. Bisexuality is an attraction to more than one gender, which is why pan comes under the bi umbrella. I'm bi and I'm definitely attracted to both men and women, and since realising I'm bi my attraction has grown to include non-binary and genderfluid people too. But this doesn't mean I'm pan. I've never liked the word pansexual for my identity, it just doesn't fit me. But if someone does prefer it I'm not going to judge them.

Hey Guys. I don't want to offend you but I just don't understand why people say Bisexuality isn't the attraction to two gender. "Bi" literally mean two in latin. I heard it multiple times that it now means the attraction to more than one gender. If you want to say that, a word like "polysexual" would be more accurate. I Just call myself pan because I don't like to reaffirm the assumption gender is a binary thing by using the word "bisexual". I mean if you don't like pan there is also queer... I don't get why the word bisexual is used if you one doesn't think gender is binary... I'm sorry if that was offensive, maybe I just think to literal... If someone could explain their perspective I would love it to read it and maybe understand it a bit more :)
@@tach-ich-bins9730 I would just say English, like most languages, is fickle and consequently words don't always follow their prescriptive, literal, and etymological meaning. Can we come up with words with more precise etymology? Sure. But what's the point when we already have a word that's generally understood to have that same meaning? If anything you'll confuse people more. To me, a lot of this is more of a linguistic debate about prescriptivism vs descriptivism.
This all being said, I can respect that there are practical differences between bi and pan. I just don't see that difference as being based around the inclusivity of people outside the gender binary.
@@roge0 Thanks for the answer. Sometimes I think you have to use new words and confuse people to be inclusive of all people because some words excluded people historically. Confused people can learn and understand if you give them time. I'm German so I'll try to explain what I mean by an German example I hope it's relatable. Sinti and Roma were often called "Zigeuner" by German people. That word is attached with a lot of negative stereotypes and is now rightly considered discriminatory. We also have a paprika-sauce we call/called "Zigeuner-sauce". When people talk about that sauce they don't want to discriminate they just want to discuss the sauce. However, the word in itself is discriminatory so they are discriminating against sinti and roma by using the Z-Word and thereby reaffirming certain stereotypes. I think one could argue that the word bisexual historically excluded everyone who dosen't identifies strictly male or female. So maybe we should not use it anymore. I'm not sure wether that applies here. I just think it's not as easy as just stating "Bisexual means the attraction to more than two genders.", since not everyone agrees to that statement who uses that word. I don't want to call everyone who uses it discriminatory I just think it's a complex discussion worth having. I hope I'm not annoying everyone here.

I appreciate that he called pansexuality a type of bisexuality because as someone who identifies primarily as bisexual (for many reasons beyond just the plain definition) but pretty much fits the definition of pansexual as well, I get really annoyed when pan people try to explain the difference and they wind up defining bisexuality in ways that most bisexuals don't.
I’m pan but usually say bi in the same way I’m pescatarian but say I’m vegetarian. The majority of the time the person asking doesn’t need the specifics and I’m tired of defining things when I could use a similar enough word they already know
So true !! I had someone ask me "so what's your preference?" recently. And I was like "huh? Oh I don't have one" and this person (who did not identify as bi) said to me "well you have to have one, otherwise you are pan. Bi is just pan with a preferrence". Ridiculous.
I imagine the pans you find annoying actually find it EXTREMELY annoying you're basically saying they're bisexual when they don't identify as that.
You can be outwardly annoyed, or you can make the world better by being patient, tolerant, and teaching. Rarely both. Your call.

i keep coming back to this video because it explains so many contemporary lgbtq+ issues, from the corporate interests looking to make a profit by focusing on the marketable queer people (which are determined as marketable by mostly straight cis people), and not to actually center our issues and rights, to fetishes and kinks being minimized in pride events and culture because it makes straight people/allies/corporations uncomfortable, to the focus on gay men, primarily white, attractive, and cis gay men during pride at the expense of lesbian/bi/pan/trans/ace/aro/nb and other lgbtq people from gaining visibility, and the diminishing of actual queer issues from the public sphere to focus on a "celebration", particularly when it comes to anti-trans legislation/gnc issues. all of these issues are relevant to the lgbtq community, but joe lycett both acts as a guide for straight people to begin to recognize these issues and for queer people to laugh about them, and the jokes are never at the expense of the community. this is way too long but i love this video so much and thought too much about it

Exactly, I’m panromantic/asexual but I feel physical attraction to people mainly because of an aspect of their personality that I find attractive. I knew I wasn’t straight but I didn’t exactly identify with being bisexual; pansexual/panromantic seemed like a much better fit.

In my experience people who use bisexual are often a bit older? It seems like the younger generation is using pan more. Even if the people who use bi that I know (34 and older) wouldn't exclude non-binary people or are very hung up on the gender binary. There's a big overlap in what people describe as their attraction. It's just the word that was in most common use, and that was hard enough for people to accept anyway.
This is so top tier, prime example of some of the best that comedy can be and do!

I'm not part of the lgbtq+ community as I'm cis and straight, but I just wanted to say that you are all beautiful. If you identify as a man, or a woman, or anything in between, I strongly believe you should be seen and treated as such. You should be allowed to marry, to adopt and raise a family. You should be free to wear a skirt one day and a jockstrap the next if it makes you happy. You are all beautiful and I hope that you are all surrounded by people who love you for who you are and who you are becoming.

I feel that it is important to specify that as I am speaking from someone who never had to live through the struggles of discovering their real gender identity. The word cisgender is in the dictionnaries, so it is a "thing". You might find Orwell's "Newspeak" more palatable, but I and others do not; therefore, despite your appreciated if unsolicited recommendations, I will use the existing term as liberally as I see fit.

as funny as joe is it's incredibly motivating to hear someone in his position of influence being so vocally supportive for an issue with pride that i'm so personally exhausted by. trans people (and most of the other letters in LGBTQ+) are totally forgotten about during pride because they're not "safe" enough for a brand to support, which of course shows exactly the true exclusive reason why brands "celebrate" pride in the first place, it's just for PR and literally nothing more.
joe ripping them apart here does more good for people like me than most cis people will probably ever know.

This guy just opened my eyes. As a person who lived in Berlin for 17 years I was so confused when I met in Berlin Mitte a group of people wearing dog masks and leather outfits having each other on a leash. I just thought it happens. Nothing to odd about it. I once saw a men wearing nothing but a bit of gold glitter which was only on his dick. But now I'm sure they went to the convention this men mentioned. Once on a unrelated convention someone just told me: "hold this" and it was a leash with a human attached to it. Thinking now about it it was a bit weird but I was dressed up as a vampire with a rather odd group of cosplayeres so it was kind of normal. Once got hugged by someone who was more covert in fake blood then anything else. Didn't think twice about that.
LOL I went to a week long Amtgard event in Texas once, some one asked me to look after their "slave" girl for a few days. :)

I'm not sure what you're getting at. You want people who join your community (LGBTQ+, I assume) to be a part of it, but to do that you're excluding people who prefer a different identity than the one you use. Pansexual and bisexual do not affect who the person is, they are just words. It is you who are setting people apart by sorting them into categories when there's absolutely no need to do so.

I’ve seen Joe Lycett on more than once on several of them, my favorite of his appearances were on QI and The Graham Norton Show. I thought he was smart and funny. I liked him, not the least because though he got in some zingers, there was nothing mean-spirited about him. As a school bullying survivor, that means a lot to me.
Since watching him here, he is now on my list of favorite humans.
I do want to give this little warning though:
