  • Promotional film for the 1970 hit single.
Just to head off any potential controversy: Of course this isn't the original group. The original record was recorded by a group of session musicians, and the group you see in the film was put together to promote the record. My goal was to preserve the promo film, not showcase Tony Burrows (great man that he is). Don't get your knickers in a twist about it in the comments, okay?

It also says in the liner notes of Cherry Red Records to a White Plains compilation that it's Ricky Wolff singing lead on the original studio track of 'My baby loves lovin". One of the band member Robin Shaw stated clearly that Tony Burrows never sang lead on the original recording of this song and it's Ricky Wolff singing lead instead. On the episode of The Strange Brew podcast in 19 October 2017, the Producer of White Plains, Roger Cook confirmed that Ricky Wolff was the lead singer of 'My baby loves lovin" on the original studio recording and Tony Burrows was one of those singing background vocal on the chorus only.

Here’s a quote from the liner notes of Cherry Red Records in regard to 'My baby loves lovin'' in 2014 : “Contrary to popular myth, we are assured that the lead vocals were performed by Ricky Wolff, with Tony Burrows doubling him on the chorus.” According to an 5th December 1970 article of the NME, the band had already stated this themselves : "The fact the group is eager to explain are that Tony Burrows did not sing lead on their first single, "My Baby Loves Lovin'".

The video was a promo of White Plains for "My Baby Loves Lovin'" in 1973 for the band's upcoming tour. The original lead singer Ricky Wolff had left the group in 1971 and thus another band member, Robin Shaw was lipsyncing the singing voice of Ricky Wolff in the video. Ricky Wolff and Pete Nelson were the two main vocalists of White Plains.

Robin shaw is the man miming the lead vocal here in the video.

@@brockreynolds870 Yes its Robin Shaw miming Wolff's studio vocals in this video. He was bassist and also vocalist for White Plains. That's why he was one of the singers on the TOTP performance.

This is correct. The poster of this video is wrong on several counts. Firstly, White Plains was not a fake, put-together studio group, ala Edison Lighthouse and others of that era. Secondly, the guys pictured in the video were actually members of White Plains, just sans Ricky Wolff and Tony Burrows. Lip-syncing the lead vocals here is guitarist/vocalist Robin Shaw. My guess would be, that by the time that this video was shot, Ricky and Tony had moved on to other pursuits. Tony Burrows sang with several groups around this time, with Edison Lighthouse being one of them.

Ricky Wolff was the lead singer of this tune. It has been long-standing misinformation that Tony Burrows was the lead singer. Sorry he wasn't. He was one of backup singers. The lead singer on the 45 record was Ricky Wolff !

Ricky Wolff was the lead singer on the studio recording of this song, not Tony Burrows. Tony Burrows only sang background vocal on the chorus. Here's a footage ( th-cam.com/video/zWpHm5ICooQ/w-d-xo.html ) in which the lead vocalist Ricky Wolff was singing live in a TV show.

i'm sorry, but this is one hell of a pop song. Its easy to tell when something is a hit, but its hard to describe why. This is a mega hit

They’re typically known as sonic, or musical “hooks”. A distinctive instrument sound, lyric, or vocal that just sort of grabs (hooks), and holds, your interest, and usually encourages you to want to hear more.

A perfect pop song, and certainly one of my personal favorites from the "golden era" of pop. It's strange, they have Robin Shaw singing (miming) the lead here... I guess it was part of the promo.

@@Jason1920 And worth every minute. What a wonderful song. Reminds me of road trips from Pennsylvania to New Hampshire to visit family. This song permeated the pop charts for the entire trip! Optimistic, pleasant, well-written, and fabulously catchy! No music today can attest to that. Thanks for posting.

Here's another great video for a great song. I like the speed on this one; it's a bit slower, like your example. I always ran my turntable at slightly lower than 33-1/3 for that same effect. The songs just sounded better a bit slower, at least I think so. Growing up in Philadelphia was the greatest because we got all the hit pop songs, and all the stations were playing them!

Robin Shaw bass/singer was lip-synching to Ricky Wolff's 1970's classic, because Ricky was no longer part of White Plains during this 1973 promotional video.

The 1960's should get credit for this wonderful song. It was written, recorded, and produced in late '69, but wasn't released until January 2, 1970.
