  • Is it actually cheaper to charge an EV vs driving a petrol car in Malaysia? We compare the actual costs here using our most affordable EV, the Ora Good Cat. What do you think?

    There are lots of variables when you consider the total cost of ownership. It is not a straightforward calculation as mentioned in this video of calculating the petrol price and electricity cost. The car is compared with a Honda HRV. Let's start with the price of the car (forget about insurance, road tax etc) only. HRV base model price is about RM 115k and Ora base model price is about 140k. To start with you have an initial savings of RM 25k which is well enough to cover the regular maintenance charges of HRV plus you are left with some money for your fuel. Even if the fuel costs are going to be about RM 5k per year (average), you can split that money for 3 years of fueling + 10k for regular maintenance for about 6-7 years. The upfront savings reduces your interest paid for the 9 year loan. Also, do you all remember the govt was talking about electricity tariff increase just a few months ago? Next is the resale value. Malaysians are buying cars with a 9 year loan. By the end of 9 years the HRV will hold more value compared to Ora. One big reason for this will be the battery capacity. It is estimated that the battery packs in the EVs loose about 2% on average every year and by the end of 9 years it would have lost about 20%. With 80% battery capacity left, it is considered that the battery pack is at the end of it's life cycle as per industry standards now. Now the 140k car will be in the market for only about 10k. You might argue that the cost of battery pack will reduce. We may never know at the end of 10 years, they might say this is a old model battery pack and it is not available anymore. Have we not come across this situation for the mobile phones? I was one of the early buyers of the civic hybrid in 2012. When I wanted to sell after 6 years, most of the second hand dealers were asking for about 33k and I bought that vehicle for 123k (all inclusive). The normal civic was commanding about 55k at that time from the second hand dealers. These cars are good if the ownership is under a company account where the depreciation costs can be recovered in many ways but for salaried people I don't think it is the best time to buy these battery cars.

      With all that said then the Japanese has nothing to fear for the future as for places like Malaysia it will always stick to ICE cars. You are not seeing this from a bigger picture like national energy security ie imported oil vs electricity from solar etc.

    we also need to take consideration on the road tax for EV. Right now, the low road tax due to the incentive from our gov. However, this will end in 2025. My uncle working in TNB said the upcoming road tax will skyrocket and becoming much expensive if the gov use per Watt for EV road tax. Additionally, the electrical usage for home will jump up (if u charge in your house), needing u to pay premium for the exceeding electrical usage.
    Thus imo, gov should strategize on how to make EV more accessible and cheaper for mass user.

    Apparently insurance for Ora is RM 5000 with NCD. For the HRV it’s only about Rm1800. That would blow up any of the fuel savings from running an EV. Not to mention the hassle of looking for a charge station and managing range anxiety when you can’t find one.

    You are partially right, if the petrol price goes up, generally the electricity tariff will be increased as well.

    for me its small cities and kampung are more practical than large cities for EV.. charging is not an issue since we can charge at home due to small cities and kampung are mostly landed.. plus area also not that large so charging is not that critical.

    When you mention the subsidised fuel cost. You fail to mention that electricity tariff is also subsidised. If you were to do "full market rate" for Petrol, you would need to do the same for Electricity cost.

    Simple culculation. With that cat we can get x50 plus petrol plus maintenance plus road tax and insurance for the next 5 years.
    I won't buy that cat for sure but will change my mind if I can get Rita Ora instead.

    Chinese brands, are like the Japanese and Korean brands. They need to show commitment to their customers by being around. Separately I think the Chinese EV brands have some really stunning designs. I will definitely get one soon.

    what is the maintenance cost for an EV for the long run (3yrs or 5yrs) as compared to petrol/diesel car?

    • @TheZaman_
      @TheZaman_ ปีที่แล้ว

      maintenance most probably cheaper since there no engine to maintenance.. only wear and tear parts eg brake pad
