    Glad you're back! I really liked your comparison of "Underground" indies being like stand-up comedy and "regular" indies being more like polished TV shows-there's definitely something to that. It's probably also because underground comics are often a one-person effort, while more polished indies involve a group, and that dynamic must translate differently into the final product.

    • @sleepyreader666
      @sleepyreader666  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks Walt.
      That's a great point about the one person effort. Especially if they are not getting a lot of financial support in advance, I think, then short snippets become more practical, and those lend themselves better to a stand up comedy -ish approach.

    Great selection of comics, and your critical analysis is always insightful. FYI Caroline Cash’s PeePee PooPoo #1 is an “homage” of Dope Comix #5 from Kitchen Sink.

    • @sleepyreader666
      @sleepyreader666  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Homage is sometimes very close to a swipe, I think!! But she has good taste in her swipes!
      Thanks for the heads up that it was Dope Comix. It looks like the same image was later used on a cover of Juxtapoz...which is probably where I saw it at some point.

      I don't know about the economics of comics...but there seems to be a lot of strong energy going into the indies lately...after the recent companies that seemed to be just about hollywood ip have fallen by the wayside.

    Nice reviews! I admire that you can read so many different small pub/independent series, not just for the expense, but for the ability to keep track of all these different short storylines from month-to-month. I usually have to read them in 4 or 5 issue bursts just so I'm not lost mid arc. I agree about the newest Conan issue and the inclusion of the Frost Giant's Daughter's perspective. It does seem weird to me as well. After reading the original R.E.H. story, I had SOME doubt whether the whole thing was imagined by Conan or not, and I think that was the author's intention and why that story is so awesome. By having a third party perspective included in this story, that pretty much throws that theory out the window. Still very good so far though so I'm not really complaining...

    • @sleepyreader666

      That's a great point about how she might or might have been real...the story was playing with mythology and things like the Sirens in greek myth.

    Psychodrama had a crazy description. “Precious Metal makes me feel d@mb!” should be the blurb on the next issue. Skull Heads - if a sentient life form is trying to mimic the shape of an animal or human, it could grab a skull to mimic? Thus it’s not really part of their body but more like an adornment? Is my explanation good or cr@p? Now I want Stand Still. How did that Huge guy fly to America? Lying down in a cargo plane? I need White Boat 2. Even though he’s wearing pants, Conan is looking fine! I really like Artgerm art but he often has anime or doll-like faces and then I hate it. This was excellent. Thank you.

    • @sleepyreader666
      @sleepyreader666  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Your explanation would make a lot of sense! I don't know if that's what is in the artists' heads.

      Too many great books, heh. I think the problem was crossing Barbaric with Deathstalker...as that has been a stinker, imo. But I can see why they would want to alert fans of each to the existence of the other.

    When I hear Dark Agnes, I think of steak, just like Bran Mak Morn reminds me of breakfast.
    Those are mostly really attractively drawn comics. I think it's obvious (as you suggest) that the art is the more significant element of comics. You can have a great song without lyrics, and you can have great comics without any words at all, or even a story, as long as there's sequential imagery.
    I've been wanting that big EC book you display since it came out, but I've had more pressing financial needs. Taschen is having a sale this weekend and, while the EC book isn't part of it, they have the gargantuan Fantastic Four and Silver Surfer tomes up for half price. Scioli's been using the FF book for his videos lately and the scans, directly from the original comics, look incredible.

      Reading obscure Robert E Howard stories must make you very hungry!
      I guess in the current climate (for quite a while now) writers are often treated as the main creator of a comic...which leads me to want to emphasize the importance of the artists, as it comes to me. I had read a review on a leading website yesterday that referred only to the writer of that Zatanna comic in such a way as to seem to give complete ownership of the series to the writer, when for me the main draw of the comic is the artist. So I'm responding to this trend.
      I only buy Taschen books during their sales...and even then they feel like a huge investment...but the addiction to big books must be fed! In fact your reminder of the current sale is going to send me over their website right now!

    It's interesting that when Warren Ellis introduced Jenny Sparks in the 90's Stormwatch, she was a play on the "bitter old vet that gets convinced to come back to the fold" trope. She wasn't meant to be seen as hip. The smoking and drinking was a reflection of her low self esteem. Ellis had her work through her emotional and "career" issues and by the time she was the leader of The Authority, she was still cynical but had gotten her act together. It's interesting that King would portray her as "the cool girl". I'll probably still check it out though for the Ryan Sook art.

    • @sleepyreader666
      @sleepyreader666  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The art was neat. It's possible I mis-read King's take on her...maybe he isn't playing her as the cool chick and I just read it wrong? The artist is actually someone by the name of Jeff Spokes...but now that you mention it, I see the Ryan Sook look to it.

    • @edward2962
      @edward2962 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@sleepyreader666 You probably interpreted it in the way King meant it. King is talented but he's done some iffy takes on some characters. I got mixed up with the names of the artists, but for what it's worthy, Sook will being doing a Black Canary book this fall.

    I really wanted to like Redcoat, because it emanated strong Archer&Armstrong, and even more Timewalker (the third brother) vibes and I absolutely love the concept but the first issue was... just OK. Would you say it's constantly evolving/growing, do I need to give it another shot?

    • @sleepyreader666
      @sleepyreader666  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Strangely I've never read Timewalker. I would hazard a guess that you still wouldn't like Redcoat...I enjoyed the humor and the art style right away and I think it continues in the same vein with the plot just getting more complex.
      Humor is a tricky thing. I didn't find Babs funny at all but I've seen other youtubers who really got into it. Whether it works in comics or not, for me, seems very unpredictable.

    Thirty comics in under an hour. Pretty good. It's true about the artwork. It carries many comics. Oh, Tom King. I haven't checked but there are probably some videos out there going after him for what he has done to Captain Atom. He angered many with what he did with Wally West a few years ago. I thumbed through the comic and like you I was put off by Jenny Sparks. What's with all the expletives? Poor Captain Atom.

      I was on a Warren Ellis kick some years back and remember really enjoying the first trade of the Authority, which featured his creation Jenny and some other malformed super heroes. It was a gratuitously violent comic, though. I understand the Authority is going to be part of the new DC cinematic lineup.
