    This was surprisingly balanced and insightful. It wasn't promoting merely a group of extremists who live on nothing, but trying to look at how rural life is possible, feasible, and can be a thriving community.

    If I'm not wrong, the Distributists of the early 20th century called for similar reforms with the aim of nurturing stable, human-sized communities that would run on the power of small enterprise. They called this "the restoration of peasantry", to the dismay of those unfamiliar with the Distributist understanding of the term. E.F. Schumacher was quite influenced by them, I think.

    I don't agree with the extremities of this policy. It has been demonstrated that permaculture is more successful as part of a medium-sized community. Instead of relying on ALL of your sustenance from your land, you feed into a local community with purchases and produce. I think the policy seems too limiting and uninformed about the benefits of growing food and local engagement. The policy is focused on climate only and will, therefore, shape the nature of the community and not the other way round. The policy should 'plug-in' to local communities and not restrict that potential.

    Nice way of living but the basic requirement is having the money to do it - coming from a wealthy background and having small scale capitalist business aspirations is a requirement it seems. The need to generate income is at the forefront, therefore requires the good will and buying power of the general population who cannot afford to do it.

    • @arghjayem
      @arghjayem 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      But as eco friendly as all these developments seem, as the video states there has only been 32 of them so far. And as they’re limited to households, that is literally just what would have been 32 “normal” households now being 32 eco houses that use their land as a business. So if all 32 of them are producing apple juice and honey that’s a lot of local “craft” apple juice businesses competing for the same local market share.
      It would actually be far better for the environment to relax local planning laws for individuals building houses and encourage them to construct in eco friendly ways with tax breaks AND then enforce higher environmental and eco standards on the property developers who are quite happy to skimp on insulation in their housing developments if it means a few extra quids profit. Rather than forcing people to earn money from a small holding in order to justify constructing an “eco home”. Why can’t you make it easier to build an eco home and still do a typical job? Like I said there are only so many locally made varieties of apple juice or honey that even the most capitalist market can tolerate.
      It’s this weird obsession with the extremes. Seemingly all or nothing, you’re either totally off grid or you’re just like everyone else. The shades of grey are important and are easier for a larger majority to achieve. It’d be great if everyone was off grid but that’s just not gonna happen and the government (local or national) would never let that happen no matter how beneficial for the environment it might be,

    If you have enough money getting planning permission to build what you like is easy and you can waste as much energy and produce as much C02 as you like, but if you are poor, look at all the hoops you have to jump through to live on the land as humbly as a church mouse......

    1) what happens if a future government decided to pull the plug on the scheme? who owns the land and what happens to the people living on it?
    2) is the land 'free', as long as you meet the 3 criteria? how long are you able to live there?
    3) i assume because you're calculating global resources by the population, it works out as 1.88 hectares per person? so a couple would have 3.76? If so, how, as the world population grows, will thiss 1.88 number change? how often does it change and does it mean that adding children into the equation will mean you will get extra land in the future?
    4) regarding the 3rd point, if you had a lot of savings and could afford the council tax etc every month, would you still need to 'prove your income' and build a business model? let's say for someone who can afford to smiply live off-grid and who only wants to grow to feed their family?

    • @mistranslatedshakespeare3324
      @mistranslatedshakespeare3324 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The majority of people purchase the land for an OPD privately. Therefore, they pay for the land, it is not free, and they would continue to own the land if the OPD scheme were to be withdrawn. What the OPD scheme gives them is planning permission for a dwelling which would otherwise be almost impossible to get on a greenfield site. I'm not sure about the exact answer to your third point; the ecological footprint tool is quite complicated but I believe it is calculated per household. Look up the One Planet Council for more information. In answer to your fourth point, private savings do not count towards your requirements to provide a minimum of 65% of your food costs from the land or your land based business; however, as I understand it, you can use other income (including savings) to meet your other needs, such as council tax etc. It is difficult, if not impossible, to grow all the food needed for a balanced diet in Wales all-year-round, hence the need for a land-based business to provide funds to supplement food grown on site.

The truth is the locals sold it in the first place, end of. As to posh kids 'just mucking about' at least they are trying and not just part of the seemingly endless contra-whine.

    yeah, let us all move into the countryside, cut the trees down, and build a home. It's no more a countryside then is it 🤷‍♂️ Everyone has a wood burner therefore more wood is being burnt and more trees cut down. There are 67 million people in the UK. If half of them cut 30 trees down to build a home and two trees a year for heating and cooking.

    Erm this is in Wales. None of the people in this video appear to be Welsh. How is this helping local Welsh people?

    Lot of threes died for those houses. Why do we need so much space. Love forest gardens. Local, why cann´t we be humble and eat what is around us. What if climat change because of co2, N turns out to be not true, are we going to keep on trying to live in more harmonie, in a (far) less parasitic relationship with what lives around us?

    Love theses projects, but why do they always have to justify by implying it is a solution to climate change. There is so much more ecological problems that a more sustainable lifestyle could solve. Climate change propaganda is driving an increase in the cost of energy and produces more bureaucracy, and government control. They implement costly products in building so it produces a need for big engineering and costly debts. It is the contrary than the autarky valued here. When they all will live with their project, they will probably see the benefit for themselves and no longer because «climate change». It is the same with the big cites, instead of make people feeling guilty about CO2, ask people how to improve their life with better transport system, for their own benefit, not some abstract CO2 imbalance.

      Couldn't agree more.
      It is a pity that people always need some kind of fairy tale to feel united in their efforts.
      But just like the second coming of Christ, the CO2 armageddon will not happen and once more people will be disappointed in their religion in the future.

      @Christopheaus Ruff It could also be the proportion of educated kids from middle-class backgrounds (of which UK has had more within the last 50 years). The opportunity for more education among rising families has allowed the ongoing development of models of economics. I suppose middle-class kids have more opportunities and perhaps have seen the limits of the current economic model (which they are from) and want to do something. The question is are the things we keep deciding our actions on really empirical truths or fad?
