This was amazing!! It was so neat that he had all of this history and implemented it into the restoration of the hotel and restaurant and actually saved and used as much of the jail; doors, beds, all the paper articles, logs, etc that he could. The ceramics, especially the bowl that Karen picked up, was beautiful. He is really talented in several different areas. Thank you for sharing. I enjoyed this video immensely. Where do you find all of these neat places? ❤

Very interesting! My mom used to ride the train from Randleman NC, just south of Greensboro, to Hot Springs NC to spend the summers with her sister and brother in law when she was in high school in the 1940s. She spoke of the town of Marshall often.

My grandfather was from Madison County and I had never been there until July of 2021. My cousin and both our spouses went for Decoration Day at the cemetery where my grandfather and much of his family are buried. We stayed at The Marshall House which it the two story house on the hill behind the courthouse. If you ever get back to Marshall on a day other than Sunday you should visit Penlands its one of the oldest businesses that has stayed open and hasn’t gone out of the family. You should also checkout Blannahassett Island across the bridge. I’ve been told that my great grandfather helped build many of the stone buildings in Marshall but unfortunately I don’t know which ones exactly. I was hoping y’all would do a video on Marshall and I’m glad to see you have.

I used to live (and visit) in the county in 1980s, early 1990s. The missing spot on the stone in front of the courthouse was a monument to Robert E. Lee that showed him on his horse. A few years ago with all the protests across the country against confederate monuments, someone stole it! Don't know about the other monuments. I remember when the jail was still a jail and Ponder was still sheriff. I also remember when Robert's Pharmacy was still a pharmacy with a soda fountain! I used to eat lunch in that stone cafe next to the courthouse and did a lot of genealogy research in the courthouse (my ancestors were from the county in 1800s.)

Next time you are in town let me know. If you want to know the history of the town and meet some of the original people and family's left i can make it happen. I have lived here my entire life. My grandmother worked in the original Marshall hotel in the 30's . If you want to learn of the 5 millionaire that leave here and of the Saturday day trips family's would take. Then you would really know marshall. Also marshall was in the Guinness book of world records for the smallest town that could not grow! So you see there's really more to marshall than one little corner jail that was turned into a hotel. But i do love there fries there.

Love you guys video I'm a lifelong resident of Marshall except for the 4 years I was in the marine Corps there is a lot more cool history about the town that the owner of the old jail didn't know about and also about the jail itself as well I speak from experience lol I was 15 years old the first time I had to stay there and many times since unfortunately lol but I have even had good times in there as well it was kinda scary when I first stayed there there was only one light bulb a old 60 watt clear bulb the kind that only the little wire filament lights up hanging from an old cloth insulated electric wire and you could barely tell the difference between a jqk playing cards and no lights in the two solitary cells where the locking mechanism was located and yes the train would blow you out of the top bunk of the old metal bunks that were welded and rivited to the walls especially if the engineer of the train knew that it was the jail which most did especially at night just to aggravate but there is a lot more cool history about the county in the other two towns in the county as well we have had presidents and even royalty stay in the once booming resort town of hot springs which had one of the largest natural hot water springs in north America which is still being used and there were several grand hotels and large public baths and also the town of mars hill which now is home to mars hill university that used to be mars hill college which used to be one of the oldest baptist colleges in the country im going to have to pay the owner of the jail a visit sometime and share a few more stories about the jail and Sherrif ponder in which I am close friends with alot of the immediate ponder family and my wife also being cousin's with Sherrif brown as well but loved your video the town used to be booming and always busy when I was a kid it's went through a cultural renovation and is still it used to have grocery stores, bus stations, and used to have passenger trains taking people everywhere but over time and alot of old stubborn people that were afraid of change caused it to almost become a ghost town that along with the last two sheriff's and there deputies being of a different breed than about all of there predacessors they are the reason that our kids and visitors don't have a whole lot of options of things to do because they caused any kind of business or activities to cease because of false arrests and accusations and harassment to almost everyone to fund the current sherrifs new jail and the other new one he is wanting to build right next to our only highschool in the county and behind one of the only two supermarkets in the county which hopefully won't happen if people will take the blinders off and vote him and his whole department out of office there are a lot better ways to fund the county and modernize without harassing the residents and visitors just to make money through the court system at least they got the overstaffed sherrifs dept and jail out of downtown Marshall now or the newer establishments that serve alcohol or have any kind of entertainment would be driven out already I just hope that our lovely beautiful county that is 50 years behind time will wake up and smell the roses before the current political faction and law enforcement ruins a great revitalization we are having just to fund projects that benefit themselves and their buddies that cause people with some really great cool business and recreational ideas that would make 100 times more revenue and opportunities for the residents of our beautiful and historical county that we call the jewel of the blue ridge!!!!!!!!!
