    Please note that a couple people have brought the color shift (lightfastness? oxidation?) regarding SB Turquoise. DS rates it as excellent, while Jane Blundell's test showed significant graying. I'm sorry I didn't know about this before forming my list, and I have not done my own tests on it. I will try to set it up, but in the meantime please proceed with caution/awareness.

      @lmac_z 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for responding Denise. I look forward to hearing about the results of your testing in time. I figured you had not seen Jane Blundel’s post and was curious if it depends upon the batch or a regular occurrence?

    • @annedavis3340
      @annedavis3340 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I don't know if this is always the case, but the "Genuine" pigments seem to come in a range of colors because the minerals they're supposedly made from come in a wide range of colors. For instance someone got a SB Turquoise Genuine that wasn't a turquoise blue, and complained it shouldn't be called "turquoise," but it's called turquoise because it apparently contains the mineral colloquially called turquoise. The turquoise mineral comes in anything from a sky blue to the color expected from the word "turquoise," to a jade-like or forest green, so concievably the DS paint could come in all those colors, if the mineral itself is what provides the basis of the color of the paint.
      Anyway, I wonder whether Jane Blundel and DS might both be right, and that she tested a tube where the mineral did one thing and someone at DS had one where a mineral mined from somewhere else or with different properties (cause it had different amounts of each mineral for example, or had more or less of the rock the mineral was mined from), happened to get a much better lightfastness result.
      I wonder whether the Genuine pigments it would be better to test lightfastness of the tube you own yourself, because there might be more variation in them than a more standardized pigment that universally can be expected to be relatively identical out of the tube (minor fairly imperceptible batch variation aside).
      I don't work for DS, and I've not gone out to buy multiple tubes of Amethyst Gen or something from different lots to test my theory, but it seems plausible to me that this is why people are getting different colors and apparently different lightfastness results too.
      Maybe someone will test this out sometime.
      If I'm right, it might be worth adding a notation about which lot number your DS Gen paints were on their pan, in case you ever happen to get a second one before the first is entirely gone, etc.

      @@annedavis3340 this is a very good deduction based on which and where the minerals are mined, Anne!
      You have definitely peaked my curiosity!!
      I’m not sure how long it takes to use a batch that is mined or if they have several at one time.
      I don’t currently have SB turquoise but I will check it out after contacting DS.
      Wish it was a cheaper pigment tho… lol

    So nice to see the Daniel Smith’s paint swatch colors!
    Have a few & poured into pans correctly & do they stay a bit (less hard when dry) as seems different brands dry differently but since first time pouring from tubes (not sure but know if all cracking) not decent water color paints!
    Like new Holbein (4th generation) & your announcement on special color 😊!

    I had purchased the Daniel Smith dot cards a while back and I'm itching to fully get into the brand and build a palette, when I clicked on your video I remembered the dot cards I had cut up and stored safely in a drawer!
    I picked out your color suggestions, however I had to go with the BUrnt Umber instead of your recommended piemontite genuine, I just couldn't seem to find it in the pile of paints..
    I will use the dots as a little palette till they are used up, switch them around a bit and then decide if and which colors to buy, thank you so much for your helpful reference video!
    would have been hard to pick out a well rounded palette having all hundreds of colors in front of me!

    What a cool series idea! I only have Daniel Smith and a handful of Winsor and Newton, so I am excited to take notes and learn more about a variety of brands! I do think that every two weeks would be good, so you would have more time to upload other videos of interest, but either way works.
    Also, a couple months ago you advised me on replacing Winsor Yellow - I wanted to update you that the DS Lemon Yellow you suggested (and advised in this video!) has far exceeded my expectations, and I'm completely enamored by its beautiful greens and lovely natural oranges. Thank you so much for the suggestion!!

    I love Sodalite Genuine, and have always wanted to get DS's Sap Green and Pthalo Turquoise because I've heard such good things. I've had their Lemon Yellow on my wishlist forever as well, so I'm glad to hear you like it. When I run out of PY3, I'll have to pick up a tube. Their Burnt Sienna really is a lovely color. I have Da Vinci's Burnt Sienna, and I'm not really a fan. I replaced it on my palette with DS's Trans. Red Oxide and haven't regretted it.

    My heart stopped when I was filling a pan with sodalite genuine, it had this incredible shimmering shifting quality. I turned on the flashlight on my phone to check it out, and all the little crystals in it were throwing out shifting scattered rainbow pinpricks of light. It was STUNNING. I called my fiance over and made him look at it too, it was just too gorgeous.
    I fell in love with it in a different swatch video first, and picked it up, but this reminded me all over again. It just mixes into so many incredible colors, you wouldn't dare not to have it in your arsenal!

    I would really want that series to be released as often as you can, because I really got into watercolors and I have quite some trouble with choosing the palette. I'm currently using Windsor&Newton in half-pans and personally I don't feel like upgrading right now, so if you could do a video about them (I've seen that you put it in your *favorite watercolors* list) in near future I'd be very excited!

    love this palette. I will put it together in my small travel palette but have to replace the sleeping beauty as it is outside my budget but there are so many other wonderful Daniel smith options. Thinking I may put in moonglow and substitute monte amiata natural sienna for the yellow ochre as it is a palette favorite of mine as a glowing earth tone . What a wonderful series this promises to be and I favor the every other week presentations while thinking it will destroy any attempts I make to rein in my art budget!

    Nice job Denise. 😁 I think if I had to choose only 12 out of 200+ colors, I'd probably have a nervous breakdown! Lol🤣 The Sleeping Beauty Turqoise concerns me a bit because of rumors of lightfast issues. Considering how close it is to that Phthalo Turquoise, I don't think I'd miss it. Could you get a non-granulating warm blue by mixing P. Turquoise with Quin Rose?

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ah I hadn't hear about the lightfastness issues. While the phthalo turquoise is greener than I imagined it in my head, making the two look similar on that single swatch page, I would use them for entirely different purposes, much like quin gold and yellow ochre. PT is dark, staining, vibrant, and a bully in mixes while SBT is soft, granulating, subtle, and can be used on its own in a natural painting :) The PT is a bit too green to mix a midtone blue, but it does mix a very dark warm blue.

    I love series like this and would even spend the day watching them back to back, so more compact would be something I would enjoy. Or even if the other video was using the palette for the piece in a more detailed discussion, but I'm a bit obsessive and nerdy that way. I compile all the info from various channels that I feel give as unbiased as possible info so when I want to find certain characteristics it's an informed search. (Unbiased as in despite it being a quality the speaker dislikes personally, it's a good choice when one desires that reaction. It's clear it is not a fault in the material, just a stylistic choice leaving both options equal in quality.)

    This is a year old, so you might not even see this, but I just bought a tube of cobalt teal, and I’m weirded out by it. Could it be because it’s a “problematic” color? Sometimes it looks teal, sometimes it looks straight up green, and other times, it’s a bright sky blue with just a tinge of green. I also feel like although the paint glazed pretty and lays on the paper nicely, I don’t get a lot of paint on a page before I have to refresh my brush. I was kind of expecting a smooth buttery paint that would basically paint itself, but I like my Paul Rubens texture better! I’m kind of thinking I might like the Schminke experience better?

    In your opinion, what 3 tubes of red , yellow and blue should I get if I want to try Daniel Smith and Holbein? It seems the latter is used by a couple artists I follow and want to see what the excitement is all about. By the way, I mostly paint landscapes\city scapes.

    • @everartokelli
      @everartokelli 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I also paint landscapes and do urban sketching, and one triad (similar to a Velazquez palette) I often use is included in Denise's list: Quin Gold, Burnt Sienna, French Ultramarine. Another great, moody, and very granulating triad for landscapes is Yellow Ochre, Piemontite and Sodalite (I use Indigo, but Sodalite is similar in hue). For brighter colors you could choose the Lemon Yellow, Quin Rose and French Ultramarine. Just my opinion, but hope it helps.

    hello there! i've just discovered your channel. i love your artwork! realistic looking animals yet you make it seem really easy to paint!
    may i ask what type of paper you used in this video to paint the swatches on? my painted colour charts somehow end up blotch-y with or without excess water. i'm beginning to wonder if it's the paint or the paper i'm using. it looks like you were liberal with the water in this yet you still get even flat washes.
    also, i would love to see you do a Holbein video for this Brand by Brand series as the brands you have previously reviewed are not easily accessible where I live in SE Asia, but the Holbein is easier to purchase and much less expensive compared the the three you've already done: daniel smith, schmincke, da vinci.
    thank you so much in advance! :)

    Great series, looking forward to the rest! I'm so glad to see two of my favorite landscape and urban sketching colors--Piemontite and Burnt Sienna--on the list. I have most of the others, and Sodalite and Trans Pyrrol Orange and are on my shopping list. And of the three Primatek colors mentioned, two (Piemontite and Sodalite) are available in stick format (US$8.74 on Blick) which is an inexpensive way to try and buy Primateks.

      Do you know how those two colors look compared to their tube colors? I haven't been a fan of the sticks I've tried!

    • @everartokelli
      @everartokelli 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I only have a few sticks which I use for travel palettes, Quin Red and Piemontite both seem to be the same as the tubes, and I just swatched Indanthrone (it might be a bit brighter in stick form--or maybe I didn't use the same amount of water). I haven't compared other colors since I tend to buy stick colors I don't have in tubes. I like the sticks for travel and have experimented with mixing up large, juicy washes, but that's all I've tried so far. Sounds like a good future experiment :)

    QUESTION - Have you done any lightfastness testing for Sleeping Beauty Genuine? Jane Blundell found that it greyed out significantly in her lightfastness testing of the Primatek colours offered by Daniel Smith, which saddened me.

    I got 6 5ml tubes of daniel smith through art snacks (subscription service) and im just wondering: is it normal for the tubes to practically explode when you open them? My hands end up a mess when i first put each color in a pallet. I havent had this happen with any other brands ive had samples of.

    What brand of tape do you use? Also, do you have any tips for making your paint not bleed under your tape?

      I'm not sure what brand it is, I don't have the packaging anymore. It was in my local art shop and had blue on the label (that's how my mind works lol). Just have to be really diligent about pressing down your tape lines before starting.

    I can already tell you one of these video will be very helpful for me : I have 60 half-pan of schmincke and two palettes, one of them with 12 spots. I know that I want some of them on the small one but 12... too much choices ^^
    Thank you !

      Hi Laura
      Just (belatedly) saw your question. The SAA colours are inexpensive and perfectly adequate with good colour saturation and good texture. I buy the colours I use a lot of from SAA (paynes grey, yellow ochre etc) as it would be too expensive to get them from Daniel Smith.
