That is good advice to get the sheets with the dot samples, I did that and I am super glad I did! Not all the colors come in half pans, so I also put the tube paints into half pans. Kyanite Genuine is my favorite color ✨💙 Never heard of Bohemian Earth Green I wonder if they changed the name to Rare Green Earth 🤷🏼‍♀️

A dangerously enabling video ;) But looking at your gorgeous palette, I feel like you need to get Schmincke's Brilliant red purple, brilliant purple (or Holbein's Bright Rose) and maybe Winsor & Newton's Cobalt Violet (it's similar to Wisteria but less opaque). Also for an insanely vibrant ref violet- Shinhan Pass Red Violet is crazy. I think you'd really love those. OK, off to buy some DS ;)

My first transition was to Windsor and Newton which I love, but I’ve just discovered Daniel Smith and I can’t believe how fantastic they are! I’m totally still a beginner but investing in the better quality definitely makes me enjoy the process more 🤓

Amazonite comes from Brazil and Sleeping Beauty comes from the Sleeping Beauty Mountains, Arizona. Careful on that sleeping beauty though, that's not lightfast according to other people's test.
Also, you're right. It's better to just buy the more unique colors from DS. You can get the typical pigments from other artist grade watercolors at a much cheaper price (even schminke and sennelier are much cheaper than DS) with almost the same quality (probably) .

That green I use in EVERY painting with foliage lol. Its natural and beautiful. Havent used quin coral much. I want Kyanite, Aussie Red Gold. Doctrine Oceanic, Duo Cactus Flower and Shadow Violet. Such beautiful granulation and love the dual tones in them.

What a fun (funny) person you are! I could sit and chuckle with you all day ~ you are hilarious in a subtle way. What a fabulous palette you have created! Daniel Smith is The Best! You just can’t find the beautiful primatek paints, the duo chromes, iridescents, and interference paints anywhere else. I have a lot of the same ones you do and love them all!
I actually started out with Daniel Smith paint and then bought a large set of schmincke shortly after for my birthday. I do have a set of student grade paint my daughter bought for me. I keep it for my grandkids to use. 😁😁 I subscribed to your channel and now I’m going to check out some of your other videos. Thank you for a delightful video this morning!

Confession time: I bought the Daniel Smith PO49 because lots of youtubers were in a panic over it being discont. and so I grabbed a tube, but I had no idea how to use this color!! I was so new to watercolor. It remains the only D.S. watercolor I own. I use St. Petersburg White Nights. 36 full pans for $45. Also Schmincke Horadam.

I went straight to artist's grade, but I'd used a friend's Micador palette (Big W version of Artist's Loft, basically) and it was love. I got Courtney's portable rainbow from Katt's Korner when I got my tax refund one year and the rest they say is history. I do now have some student grade colours filling some colour gaps in my palette and they're nice, but I can definitely tell the difference. I advise everyone I know that they should buy the highest quality they can afford because the paints will behave properly and it will be easier to learn. I usually recommend 5ml tubes or Katt's Korner if they're a bit strapped.

I started with the Mijello Mission Gold set and from there when straight to Winsor & Newton and Daniel Smith. I have the split primary set and Moonglow from Daniel Smith. I'm using W&N browns but am going to swap them out for some single pigment ones from Daniel Smith because I just don't like how they mix
I recently bought Perelyne Maroon which I think you would like considering a purply garnet.
I have a list that I'm slowly working on acquiring.
I find the Mission Gold paints are well priced but stay sticky and never really dry. So for a beginner they were almost too easy to re wet.
You should buy some Nuvo Embellishment Mousse. I love mixing the platinum one with my watercolour and I really want to try the mother of pearl one.

As a beginner, I have been hesitant to spend the $ on high end watercolors, but I'm thinking I should start building a collection little by little. I lucked into a clearance sale at HL on Koi tubes and purchased a set of 10 for $8! (Regular $32) Good enough to start with and try to learn some techniques, but very limited color choices. I'm trying to learn mixing, but am having a bit of trouble with purples. I think I just need to purchase some of these awesome colors in DS and just be done with it! This video makes me want them even more! Those colors & shimmers are divine! .... off to take apart the couch to (hopefully) find some spare change!!! ;)

Fuchsite is one of my new favorite colors. I got it about a month ago and it's subtle but so pretty. Just ordered the Cascade Green. I'm slowly building my palette. I REALLY want kyanite genuine but it's definitely one of the pricier 15ml tubes and I already have Moonglow which is 💜💙. I want so many more of these colors! I love your idea of swapping half pans but honestly, good watercolor tubes last a LONG TIME if they are used consistently. I'm talking YEARS. I know that from personal experience only but I figure that's the best teacher, right? 😉 And I think you could get Deep Velvet Plum from Garnet and Purpirite, maybe? Although I think the Napthamide Maroon looks a lot like that flower's shade... Or maybe the N Maroon with just a bit of the Purpurite mixed in?
    As always, loved the video!
    😍

Gorgeous colours! Fuchite is phonetically pronounced like you were thinking but didn't want to say. ;) The prissy Queen Victoria wasn't amused and demanded an alternative pronunciation which you used.
I'm with you 100% that beginners would benefit from the artist grade quality, but it's actually the paper that matters most. Buy student grade watercolours and cotton paper and proceed to artist grade colours after you've fallen in love with watercolour, would be my advice to beginners. Thanks James, wonderful video as can be expected from you! :)

I really think the better quality of art supplies, the better the experience of creating. I adore my DS M.Graham Schmenkie an WN professional. I purchased some inexpensive watercolors recently because there was sooooo much hype around the beautiful teal color tin. I really wanted to love them but student grade just does not compare - period. I find no value in them so I gave them to my 6 year old. That’s where they will at least get some use.

I just learned the rule today..So if a color is a single pigment then it is named whatever the original creator named it and if the color has multiple pigments in it then the chemist gets to name it whatever he/she wants to name it. The Sleeping Beauty DS pigment is actually named after where the pigment came from which is frm the Sleeping Beauty Mine located in Arizona :) I thought all of that was really interesting :)

Hello James, I came across your video browsing for Daniel Smith colors. I really enjoyed watching and listening to you, love your sense of humor. I realize this video is 2 years old, I hope you will still get the comment. I am really a beginner, although I’ve been using watercolor markers to color fir a while, but nit actual watercolors. And can’t draw, but pretty good at coloring. I love playing with the colors, even just swatching them. I bought a set of 12 limited edition DS, nice colors. I had room for 12 more,so I found on Etsy at a reasonable price half pans (not the one you recommend). I really love the collection you have, all of them are colors that I like. In the 24 I got I have some of the colors you have, and I would like to get more of the other colors you have. But it’s hard to afford it. I also got 36 Roman Szmal colors ( if you heard of him) from Jackson’s in UK, very nice artist grade, many kind of similar with DS,very affordable. If you are not familiar worth checking out. And 12 of Jackson’s own colors, also very nice and inexpensive. But I would like more DS especially the Primatek. I also love the 2 handmade colors you mention the Copper Candles by Rachel Beth and Manhattan(also by Rachel Beth).i dud check her store on Etsy but seems she doesn’t have anything right now? I sent her a message, wait for reply. But you mentioned som that sometimes you can be “gifted” some if these paints. I never heard if such thing, how does that work? Maybe you have to be an artist on TH-cam? Anyway I hope you get this and hope to hear back from you. Again I love your collection, I write them all down, maybe one day I can get more if those colors. I hope you are well and safe☺️

Hi Judith, I found your latest comment left on my most recent video and came to search for your question you mentioned you left here. First of all, I am sorry for the delayed response to your question. Unfortunately I receive a lot of correspondence each day and I cannot manage to reply to everyone straight away, sometimes if at all. You have mentioned you are new to my channel (Welcome, we have a lot of fun here!) so I would just like to state what I have stated in the past - that I do my best to respond to comments when I can, the best way to urgently contact me is through email and hopefully someone in the comments will help you out with an answer if I can't get back to you. I see another commenter has helped you with an answer to your question and, again, I'm sorry if you felt led to believe I would answer all questions, immediately.
To extend upon the answer given: yes, I have been gifted many art supplies from friends and subscribers who share their excess or gift them to me if they believe I will enjoy them. Some have stated it is a "Thank You" gift for the free content I provide on TH-cam, Instagram and Teachable, others have wanted to know if I could work with the supplies in videos so they can get better use out of them, and sometimes brands will offer to send them for review/ paid promotion (I have so far declined paid promotions, but have voluntarily reviewed items I've been gifted or purchased with my own money if I feel like doing so). You don't have to be an artist on TH-cam or even have a social media following to participate in shares/swaps on Facebook groups and forums. You simply post and state what you would like to swap for and see if anyone is interested. If you would like companies to give you products, theres is an assumption they will be receiving equal value in your promoting the product, so you would most likely need to have a group of followers on a social media platform you could market the product to in a review.
I hope that answers your question. My advice would be to join an art journaling community group on Facebook where people are sharing swaps/trades posts and just see what opportunities are there.
If I may offer some personal advice - please don't let my delayed response deter you from asking questions to Creators. I can understand why you have concluded that we are rude, but I hope you can also appreciate that it takes a lot of time and effort to create and share this content for free, as well as engage with our communities on TH-cam, Instagram, Facebook and the like. Your one question may not seem like a lot in this comment thread, but with over 300 videos on this channel, and many others like yourself asking questions on a video I almost don't remember making at this point, it can be incredibly time consuming to tackle every single comment. I try my best and do not promise engagement with all posts, however I can accept that this might not be good enough for you and the expectations you have set. I hope a touch of perspective on this issue might allow you to approach other Creators on this platform with a little more grace, if not for any other reason than I would hate for you to isolate from this wonderful community.
      Sincerely,
      James.

@@JamesLukeBurkeCreative James, I just read your message /comment, I di apologize I don't want to come across simply as a demanding person and expecting more than it's reasonable. The truth is I contacted you on Instagram too and emailed you and although I do understand that you must get hundreds of comments and can't respond to all of them, it so happens that I rarely get a reply from anybody, it's just how it happens to me. I'm surprised that now you answered after this other person made a comment, but please understand I don't expect charity from anybody. No, I did not receive an answer to my question, I guess I have to figure it out myself. Yes I asked you how does the swap /gifting works but more importantly I asked about that Designer on Etsy Rachel Beth I believe, who makes those handmade paints, I guess she doesn't have any products right now because there are no listings and I messaged her more than a week ago, but haven't heard back. And also there were a couple of DS colors you had in your palette that I can't seem to find on the DS color chart, like Candy Cane Red and another, I forgot. Maybe they took them out of their present color lineup. Mainly I wanted to ask a few things because you sounded so easy going and it's very hard to find DS half pan paints, it's mostly the tubes. But I will figure out things, I'm sorry about how this turn out, I am not a confrontational person, I guess I got a little frustrated, feeling kind of an outsider, because as I said I leave nice comments to many people and sometimes questions, but almost never get a response. I apologize again and be well and safe!
