Yeah I really enjoy the videos. There's no... "And magically we get this result" I appreciate showing mistakes etc as well. Didn't realize the tour was in Pgh too! Stupid covid.
You can tell this guy is the real deal. Hes not some youtube scammer that pushes a bs script. He thinks before he speaks, and articulates his sentences to a specific point. I love this channel.
I’m on the younger side. I’ve been watching your videos for the last several years. I just wanna thank you. Honestly. You helped me with siding, trimming, redoing my kitchen, EVP flooring, and so many others. Again, thanks. That’s all.
I’ve said this on other videos, but I’ll say it forever. You’re such a great teacher and help me make sense of everything! As soon as I have the budget for it, I’m replacing my garage door. My current door isn’t electric and is 40 years old and is falling down. It NEEDS to be done but I’m glad to know it’s got a good ROI.
Another excellent video from the best guy on YT. Common sense, value, what not to do. Jeff is the best. Even if I have no intention of doing whatever his videos are about, I watch anyway just to learn something. Never disappoints. No bullshit,, just facts.
I love that you added the roof to list. Really when you look at renovations their are things that add to the value of your home and projects that maintain the value of your home. A new roof may not sell your home but the bank cares a lot. A bad roof will cost you but a new roof won't ad much value.
Spot on with focusing outdoors. I used to work for a landscaping/ general service company and one of our most common gigs was realtors hiring us to just pressure wash the siding and deck. He’d pay us $300-400 and the house would go up two grand.
Since I've been following your videos for a while, I must say that I am extremely appreciative to have you as a resource, especially since I'm about to purchase my first house this month! Now that you've given me the confidence, I can renovate it as I choose.
I love this dude. I’m doing my own renovations, except the kitchen, and I’m learning so much from his channel, he also has a very similar personality as mine! Glad I found your channel as I’m doing my renovations and not after!
Thank you. I didn't grow up with any of this. Your boys have no idea the advantage they've got. My point is, it's scary. It's very scary because I had to learn how to use those basic tools. People like you make it much less scary. And you specifically encourage me to try. The really cool thing is because I'm learning I can teach my boy. I'm a widow and he's 4 but he won't grow up without practical skills. He will know how to do stuff his Dad didn't get a chance to teach him. So thank you...
To say that it's a valuable skill-set to have would be such an understatement. I have no experience in renovating what so ever but hey there's a first time for everything. I'm doing as much research as I can and watching a ton of his videos. We'll see how this kitchen renovation turns out once I get the courage to start it lol.
Ive been watching your videos for a few months now and I must say I am very thankful to have you as a resource, especially since I am buying my first home this month! Now I have the confidence in rehabbing it the way I want, thank you!
This is the most helpful video I have watch all year! And I watch a lot of TH-cam. Haha. I love your channel. I have been watching you for years and have learned so much from you. You are a great teacher
Jeff I just want to say thank you for everything that you have posted ...someone like me truly appreciates it ...since I purchased my home in 2009 as newly married in a first home I have done few projects myself ,, purely due to the cost of hiring a company...I was quoted $25,000 for a deck ,,, well I said hold my beer,, lunched the TH-cam video and built it myself the way I wanted ...I wish I had your videos at that time ....few months ago I got a quote for a shed $7,500...I said hold my second beer,, and Jeff's TH-cam how to build a shed and in no time I had my shed built for less than $2,000 including 20&20 concrete slab...next project is my basement .. completely unfinished and I have spent more time with you on TH-cam than with my wife ...." Wife...who you talking to at 2am....me-- Jeff from TH-cam ...Wife - what are you wearing Jeff from TH-cam...aaaaam blue Home RenoVision shirt....😂...I have learned so much from your videos...please consider coming to North Dakota at some point ...thank you very much
my bf replaced our double garage door with no previous experience. Yes, he had a couple of mishaps but I am proud of him for that. He also learned by having to fix the broken one several times lol
What a great lecture. The market numbers at the end almost made me spill my coffee! Home Depot makes more money than a sports industry - wow! As an Investor/Landlord. I would say location, curb appeal and to check out the competition. If 85% of houses in the street have a garage - could be worth the investment (if you have room). Same with a fence, especially in a family neighbourhood. If not then other substitutes such as a couple of large sheds for storage might put your house higher in the selling list. Same applies for a ceiling price. Sure if you want to put in an Olympic Sized pool in the garden and marble tile on all the floors go ahead but don't expect for your house to be worth double everyone else's in the street. It will add value but as a return, not what you invested in. Painting is absolutely a skill that any DIY'er should have. I love it, it is like Zen meditation. That being said, I once purchased a property that had a terrible exterior paint job (It was a bank sale so wasn't too concerned at that point) Indeed the house itself had some interesting carpentry and while no "Jeff Thorman", I do know that cutting through several joists to move a staircase is going to weaken the structure (and he wondered why the floor dipped?) OK it was a wreck, but I digress...and after many hours of sweat to scrape and clean up the exterior it turned out great. Painting and drywall finishing (no disrespect to those skilled tradesmen) is mostly labor. Yes there is some skill involved but compared to carpentry it is at the lower end of the scale. I myself have become quite proficient with a trowel, in no part thanks to this channel's superb class on "drywall". Agree with the stone cladding, looks nice on certain homes, adds character but again a "fad". But then if you are in the business I'm in, fads make me money (Smiley face). Windows & siding ditto, you can do them yourself but I don't like being up that high so sub it out and still add value. Many times you can just replace the boards and keep the trims in place. And if you can get a deal on triple pane they are great for noise reduction if you are in a busy traffic area. Roofs, yep it keeps the rain off your head and has a 10-15 year lifespan in our area (regardless of what the company says) My only add is a "new" roof is more attractive to buyers as it is a high cost (compared to some tile backsplash the husband slaps on the wall over a weekend) that people do not want to fork out, plus it gives them peace of mind. And my last trade secret is "Shiny things sell homes", kitchens, bathrooms, new paint, new flooring, it looks new and clean and people like it. hence the fact Lowes make more money that LeBron James. Even something such as a respray of the doors and some new handles will add value. Although a bad tile job or poorly designed kitchen can ruin your investment.
Thank you for a detailed description with each point. I'm happy to hear I've already knocked a few of these off on my house. Though I'm surprised you didn't mention having stucco for exterior, it's much more durable than vinyl again driving hail storms (Canadian weather feature). Love it when Jeff makes these thoughtful talking videos that go along with the diy videos!
Love your videos. They not only help me get things done around the house (working on finishing a basement), but give me some confidence to tackle jobs that I would have never thought of tackling. Hugely appreciative of the amount of information that you provide free of cost. Congrats on 1 million, well deserved! (999k as of posting)
This is the best youtube channel I've stumbled on in years. Thank you!! Sometimes the YT algorithm does deliver haha. Hey I was wanting to ask whether you have any tutorials or tips for how to convert a double sided out of comnission fireplace into wall space? Thinking of pulling off the mantle and brick work and trying to install drywall. One side has an out of commission gas heater in it and the other side has an empty heart with a metal shield over it. Both have horrible brick mantles - one goes into living area, one in dining area. I'd like to just board them over so that there is the possibility the chimney could be used down the track, but would like to make it look as much like a normal wall in the meantime as possible. I've been able to find a lot of videos about renovating and refreshing fireplaces or totally removing, but not a cover up job like this. Thanks!
Really great tips for the first time homebuyer, especially in today's market where people are already paying 3-4X their income and it puts them in a really rough spot with little wiggle room for upgrades. This is really how you save money, time, while getting the best quality materials that last the longest for a fair price.
You did great my man. Public speaking is no joke. Breathe lol. I was gasping for air watching 😂 I can relate but taking classes saved me going forward. Great channel 👍🏽
Jeff you are excellent at explaining this stuff. I am not handy at all and you helped me get my first DIY project done during this stay home time...Thanks
Jeff how do I transition from high carpet to low laminate wood floor that was my project and the transition is the only thing I cant seem to get right. Tried 4 in 1 reduced er that is not working, maybe I dont understand. Carpet 1/2" taller. Left 3/4" gap between surfaces
I think the kitchen and bathroom are projects to make the house your own, not so much as a reselling point. Thanks for your videos I just got my first house. the first project will be just upgrading the service panel and putting ceilings fans on each room. Later on, I will tackle the bathrooms and kitchen. Not to flip, just to make my house my own.
Re: Garage doors. Fully agree with you. Tried one on my garden shed one year. Had it 99% of the way there, but just not working well. Got a professional door install 3 month's later, the guy did everything I did - but in 1/10th the time, a whole lot more accurately (with tools and jigs) and adjusted it all perfectly (the spring adjustment was a massive and potentially dangerous part of the job for me). Was not worth my time and effort. (Plus my old door panels ended up being good quality light shelves in my shed.)
Wow! Hello from Durham. We are usually in the back seat in our Triangle area. With your guidance I'm about to attempt bathroom tile. Im learning a lot for you. Thanks.
My question is specifically around marketability vs. return on investment. While kitchen and bath provide a low ROI I think by doing so your home becomes more marketable or desirable. With that said, wouldn't you agree that while the investment returns aren't realized by increased profit the ability to sell over similar homes is a value not calculated by ROI? Side note* I'd like to thank you for the incredibly helpful how to videos. I've finished my entire basement myself and leveraged heavily on your drywall videos and just recently your tile videos! I'm a fan and tell all the DIYers I encounter about your channel.
Excellent presentation. I agree with everything he said. Except that Spanish style roofs may actually sell a house to someone looking for that style, but it’s not a renovation to add.
100% right on garage doors. Last week I took this on as a DIY. I research it an i save about $500. It took me about 10 hours. In taking the old one out, the cable let loose and cut my ear the. Then in installing one panel let loose while I was putting the rail in and bonked my head. And of course now my garage is filled with the old door that I have to get rid of. In retrospect, $500 was a bargain!!!
Living in S. Florida the prices and selection are insane. My friend living in S.C. got amazing high end products in S. Florida and drove them to S.C. It’s incredible how much they saved. Prices go up sooooo much the farther you get from the port.
Another fantastic video! The cost to value analysis is a pretty cool resource. It'd be amazing to see something like this with a column for diy cost for these projects.
fun fact im looking to bay a house and im activly looking at the roofs for the solarpanels im planing to instal so a good roof is for me a important part of the house
Excellent presentation... I'm too old to care about my house value but this is very practical information, as an old fart I tell young people all the time that they can save a small fortune learning to do/fix things themselves, the hourly rate I have to pay out of after my after tax money is a lot of money.....
Adding storm windows improves the R value as much as replacing old wooden windows. It also saves you from replacing historic windows if that’s an issue.
I've been watching your videos lately(on both channels), great info, decent approach, but this one finally made me subscribe. The honesty and details from your professional experience will help many people make the right decision on how they want to approach their investment. Thanks Jeff!
I really appreciate your videos. We are big on diy and this was a great video. I have passed a few of your videos on. Keep up the great work. Doing awesome! I’m learning a lot. I love how honest you are about products. I really get the sense that you are not trying to sell me anything but the the knowledge you have and great content! I’m loving all the videos. Thank you!
Home RenoVision DIY I am excited to see this video! I will be replacing single pane from the 60’s! I found a great vinyl product and will replace in stages because of cash flow. But your opinion, viewpoint and experience is very valuable! I make sure to watch your ads to get you YT revenue as much as possible! Thank you for what you do!!
Thank you so much for this information! Your information is empowering and helpful. Your passion for helping people get the best deal and end result is evident. My husband and I are moving into a home built in the 1950s and have hired professionals to remove cracked asbestos tile. Not the fun part of remodeling/renovating. I would love to hear more about what is safe to DIY verses what is dangerous (signs and symptoms) in an old home. What is best to hire out or DIY given specific condition..etc.
Thx Jeff ! So much great information and I’m learning from your experience and wisdom. You have integrity and I would buy a used car from you! lol. I’m learning when to delegate like the garage door example.
What's funny is I bought my house because it had a nice roof and every single person who has ever visited me has commented on the roof! (Not even kidding) But jokes aside, thanks for the great video. Both I, and my helping handyman (aka Dad) love your videos! Best of luck with the new church conversion project. I look forward to following along.
Hey Jeff, I'm currently just finished 2 renovations, with 1 ongoing and 1 upcoming. The upcoming one is a complete wreck and will need everything done. I think it might be a good opportunity for me to make a video walking through the house and you being able to comment over it of what should be done. I'm currently working 200% for the family business in these hard times, but in a month or 2 I'll be able to start the big project with 60% of my time dedicated to it. So glad to become a member of the DIY community. Keep uw with the amazing video's you're making!
Thank you for this video, for all this information! I want to do many upgrades to my home but it's good to see which ones are going to give the most return in the long run.

Why aren't the TV shows saying paint your house? Cause the sponsers get their highest margins in the kitchen and the bathroom.
Thank you Jeff!

This guy is the best building instructor on TH-cam. He’s very good with telling the DIY crowd exactly how to do most anything around the house. Thank you for my one stop instruction site!!
Yes, he is quite good
We painted and caulked and put in baseboards all following his advice. Just listed our house, so I guess we'll see... we painted inside, but not out...
He is so natural and does not BS. Like I trust what he says because it is conflict free. he always says his reasoning why he recommends this or the downsides of the other method so u actually learn and understand.
Yeah I really enjoy the videos. There's no... "And magically we get this result" I appreciate showing mistakes etc as well. Didn't realize the tour was in Pgh too! Stupid covid.
Agreed
You can tell this guy is the real deal.
Hes not some youtube scammer that pushes a bs script. He thinks before he speaks, and articulates his sentences to a specific point.
I love this channel.
Exactly. He is giving real answers, not reading a screen or any bs like that. He talks what he knows.
Also never sets up the video to go smooth, dealing real world problems
agreed, I have felt this way for years.
Dudes awesome
Kind of guy you can bust chops with all day and not feel like your "working."
Idk where I would be without this guy
Bigger pockets brought me here. This channel will save investors thousands of dollars. Amazing value thank you!

Clicked on this video to get an idea of the expected ROI for my current projects. Just so happen to live in Durham, so the chart at 16:50 is perfect!
First-time homeowner to be here! I watching these videos on repeat 😂
This man is like the patron saint of DIY
As a garage tech I appreciate the garage door section of the video
I’ve said this on other videos, but I’ll say it forever. You’re such a great teacher and help me make sense of everything! As soon as I have the budget for it, I’m replacing my garage door.
Let the man play with his pen!! 😂😉
Thanks for the great advice as always 👍🏻
This man is God sent!!!!
Awesome stuff, Mr. Thornton. You are my #1 resource for remodeling information. Thank you so much.
Thorman, Thorman! :O

@@HomeRenoVisionDIY Is this out? I'm excited to see this too!
Is the video up yet??
Home RenoVision DIY I am excited to see this video! I will be replacing single pane from the 60’s! I found a great vinyl product and will replace in stages because of cash flow. But your opinion, viewpoint and experience is very valuable! I make sure to watch your ads to get you YT revenue as much as possible! Thank you for what you do!!
Alexis Jankowski - exact same boat here - including a shower window! 🙄can’t wait!!!
Oh, BTW, a 12 slot breaker box, a failing wood garage door & a failing opener. Also 1 outlet in the garage!!
Thanks for this eye opener of a video
Thank you so much for this video. This is so helpful. Love your video. Love the insight
Like how your challenging the status quo when it comes to home renovations
This is great stuff. Just a request: can you guys add bookmarks in the description or text in the video for us to quickly scroll? Thanks!!!
Best is to buy down a beat up house and then do all this. Buy it well undermarket and you will get massive returns.
Great video! I feel as though I've been given a peek behind the curtain!
Can't guarantee to do a voice over. but happy to help with questions.
Bestie I know you didn't just tell Jeff it would be a good opportunity for him to give you his time and expertise for free
Thank you for this video, for all this information! I want to do many upgrades to my home but it's good to see which ones are going to give the most return in the long run.
Thank you so much for your videos. I appreciate your style and humor.
Your advice is valuable.
This guy cracks me up. I love the videos!
Thank you so much!! What if I want to get rid of a dishwasher? Would I be losing money?
Love DIY reno, and this guy makes it fun.
Thank you! Great video. Very helpful!
