Gosh, I miss Anthony Perkins. A man taken too soon 😔 I will always love this movie. Beautiful music, great actors, beautifully done.
This movie is amazing because it deals with someone trying to cope with mental illness, but due to the stigma of it, he's shoved tragically back into the pit he clawed his way out of. This is psychological horror in the truest sense.
I totally agree, you see in the movie that very well. Norman DESPERATELY trying to stay sane as the world around him seems to be trying drive him (Pardon the pun) PSYCHO.
The stigma of mental illness? How about the "stigma" of being a serial murderer??
Truly one of the most underrated horror movies of all time and winner of the "Better Than It Has Any Right to Be" Award.
A Masterpiece!
It's a perfect ending for Norman's story! Mother has been replaced and restored in the over-watching window, the Bates Motel is back in business and Norman is finally home. His perfect little "deranged" world is in harmony again and his alluring trap awaits new victims.
I saw the trailer for PSYCHO 2 when I went to see RETURN OF THE JEDI, I was only eight, and I was not really familiar with the original film. So... when I got home, I told my mom that I saw a preview for something called "Puh-syco 2", yeah, I pronounced the "P".
That one shovel sound effect...
Hear, hear! This too is my favorite installment. I was genuinely engaged with the story, characters and the mystery. Also a big fan of Psycho III. It's an underrated trilogy of theatrically released films.
Something that disappointed me with this video was the lack of acknowledgement the amazing score for this movie, for being a Horror movie score it brought me to tears several times.
It was a beautiful score, yes.
The Emma Spoole thing wasn't ignored in part 3, it was explained that she was crazy, jealous of her sister having a kid, and wanted to claim him as her own child...
I just want to give a shout-out to Jerry Goldsmith's score; it really nailed down the tragedy of Norman's character.
whether you're going full goofball or seriously analyzing a film, you're easily my fav reviewer!
Thanks!
@@AllisonPreglerlike the movie isn't really that bad
@@AllisonPreglerlike why did you make it sound like pyscho 2 story was only about Norman
@@AllisonPreglerit was clearly not just about Norman in Psycho 2 it was also about Emma Spool and Mary Loomis and Toomey and that one adult and Norman psychologist
@@AllisonPreglerlike did you know that Lila Crane mother and Mary was also The Killers 2 there are three killers in a movie
One of the scenes that scared me the most as a kid, was the scene when that boy and girl sneak into Norman's basement, then the kids noticed mother walking around and the way mother looks at them and come after them as they're trying to escape out the window. That part always creeped me out lol
"Skull full of shovel" ahhh my favorite Napalm Death song
Finally, other people who enjoy this movie. I always get booed when I list it as one of the top sequels of all time.
Justin Spraragen, Those "boos" should be totally ignored!!!! In my opinion, "Psycho ll" is THE gr8est sequel of all time!!!! ;-)
@@paullamontagne1899 It really is. I don't mind saying I love this one as much as I do the first one. They're both tied as my favorite movie of all time.
@@hotdog5178 The same goes for me!!!! ;-)
Gurl this is A. maybe your best review ever and B. maybe your best review outfit - a double whammy!!
Sad thing is the whole "stick them right back where they were with no supervision due to budget issues" really is fairly commonplace in real life.
I think it made it better. With either same location. Amd had fewer cast focused on mist important charaters.
I absolutely adore this film, and I too would pick it over the first Psycho, any day. The characters, the music, the cinematography, and the overwhelming sadness surrounding Norman's character is just heart breaking. Hands down, one of the best (if not the best) horror sequels of all time. I just love it.
Blue Firefly No way over the first Psycho?
I personally couldn't pick one over the other as I love both movies, & i even didn't mind the 3rd movie. The first 2 Psycho sequels do a pretty good job at continuing the story in a way that made sense for the character, & showing just how tragic Norman Bates story is.
I use to live in Wenatchee, WA and I remember an abandoned armory that had a Psycho II logo banner in a top floor window as late as 1998 when I moved away. This wasn't some isolated building either. It was in the industrial area one short block down from the main strip and, due to its height, the banner (presumably there ever since the theatrical release) was easily seen by anyone driving on the avenue. I don't think the building exists anymore but I soooo regret never thinking to break in and steal that thing. It probably just ended up thrown in the trash and it's not exactly a common marketing item like a poster or something.
Ice-T actually filmed scenes for "Surviving the Game" in the alleys on the same strip around '93 or '94. I'd forgotten all about that until just now!
Straight up one of the best horror sequels of all time.
This is the kind of film that could have a film made about it. Focusing on Perkins and his resentment for the role and ending with his acceptance of it after the sequel's success.
Your opening psyches me up like the HBO intro from the 80s.
It reminds me of the lead-in for a Saturday night movie on USA at 10 PM you'd turn to when staying up late while on summer vacation. (Which I suspect was largely her goal with it.)
Fun Fact: Tom Holland wrote the script for this which explains a lot of the sillier moments including the ending shovel scene, but despite that it's amazing how well this movie turned out. I consider this movie underrated gem mainly because it gets overshadowed by the original.
Holy crap, the new Spider-Man wrote this movie? That kid's going places!
Interesting how we more or less stopped hearing about the other Tom Holland right about the time when the new one showed up. I don't know if that's a coincidence or if Hollywood's acting up again.
There are way to many Tom Hollands in the writers and showbiz. There's a Tom Holland who is an author but he was only 15 years old when Psycho 2 came out.
"I don't feel good Mr-"
*bonked with a shovel*
@@littlefieryone2825 To be fair, Spider-Man's survived being hit by worse.
Is this the same Tom Holland who was involved in the original Child's play? I have such a vibe it is, just from the shovel scene alone.
I can't wait till Gus Van Sant does a shot for shot remake of Psycho 2 in 2021.
I’d would kind of like an adaptation of the original Psycho II book as the sequel to the remake.
I really hope that happens, that'd be hilarious
Stan Wright Hope that is a joke.
That would be fitting, considering that, by this point, the same amount of time will have passed since that lame remake as the period between the original film and its first sequel. But that’s probably what you were getting at.😉
Stan Wright, Go to your room, young man!
I love Meg Tilly and forgot she was in this! My first viewing of the Psycho sequels was renting them at my local video store. Which should not have been letting me rent horror movies at the age I was renting them, but I came in with money and I was never late with returns. XD
chrissysky01 There's more than one?
I was renting out psycho 1,2,3 and the Halloween movies and wasn't stopped in my
video store when i was younger.
Thank you, this is a movie that I get a huge eyeroll when I mention how good it is.
Ironically the movie that started the slasher genre gets a sequel in its hey day.
Psycho 2 was my favorite. When I was a kid, I thought it was really scary. Plus that music still gives me chills.
One of my favorite movies, and easily the most underrated sequels ever. Almost as if a good script, director and cast could lead to a good movie?
Totally agree with everything you said in this review. The one thing I thought you would touch on was how ridiculously strong Mrs. Spool would have to be not only to perform the killings but also to cover them up. From having to lift Toomey's body into the trunk of the car, to moving that large stack of coal and then bury Lila Loomis back under it (which she had to do in a very short amount of time).
It's impossible. The movie starts well (aside from the silly idea that Norman would have ever been released in the first place), then becomes completely ludicrous after the first 40 minutes or so. The whole plot is a giant cheat.
Thank you for this review! Psycho 2 is one of my all-time favorite horror sequels ever and you put words where I could not!
It's been decided......You are by far the greatest punch dancer of all times.
"I forgot to bring any c-c-cu-utlery."
Gotta correct you on one thing...Psycho doesn't have one of the best shower scenes, it has THE BEST shower scene ever. This movie is excellent. Has one of the best jump scares ever made...you know what part I'm talking about.
I confess to a hopeless addiction to the film. In the past month, or so, I’ve watched it at least a dozen times ! And see something new, and of interest, each and every time !
Great review. I hope you follow up with PSYCHO III though because there is a major error here...PSYCHO III doesn't ignore the Emma Spool twist. Rather, it is integral to its plot!
People always knock the "budget cuts" line in this film, but if you do research into the results of Reagans budget cuts on mental institutions at the time, the line is actually perfectly true to the times. Otherwise, love the review, and agree, its a great film
just found this channel and as soon as I saw the intro I knew I was in love with it.
Certainly a bold statement to say its even better than the first one. Its been a long time since I've watched it. But I think I agree that it gets a bad rap. They truly did something different with it and again Perkins is fantastic.
Truthfully a underrated sequel got this 1999
Anthony Perkins was a very great actor and handsome
The psychiatrist in Psycho II already explained to Norman he didn’t have to live in his old house . it was Normans choice to face his fear and without that Bates motel and house There would’ve been absolutely know point Revisiting Psycho . other than Perkins himself The house and the motel were the main characters and became iconic . taking Norman away from that setting . would have been like taking Freddie Krueger away from those dream sequences in a nightmare on Elm Street 👋🏻🇬🇧
I love your old school intro with the sax. Love me some sax. Saxo-mo-phoooone!
I love how balanced this review is.
Great work on pointing out how some plot elements can be silly, but still work at the same time.
As an 80's kid this is my fav of all the Psycho films - great script and very under-rated.
Christopher Walken as Norman Bates? LMAO! I can just picture the jokes of seeing him play Norman Bates.
My biggest problem with this movie is that it was always my interpretation that at the end of the original Psycho "Norman Bates" was effectively dead, his personality having been completely replaced by that of his mother. How exactly do you rehabilitate that?
Matthew Walton son of Sam was reformed so I don’t see how this is a stretch..
Its a horror sequel...prepare to disregard logic
@The Caped Critique Yeah, I get that. Extensive psychiatric care. Problem is I don't think any amount of psychiatric care could bring Norman back especially considering the state of mental health care when these movies were made.
Norman is a deranged killer. You can't "rehabilitate" that. They did a ret-con job on Norman for this movie to make him more sympathetic.
0:35 @Allison Pregler Hey, Allison, I just wanted to say thank you for this review. It got me to watch Psycho 2 last year, along with 3 and 4: Awakening, and I consider it a great follow-up. I'm not that big a fan of Psycho 3, but I consider *3* to be a so bad it's good movie, kinda a guilty pleasure. And as for the Awakening, the ones that held the last sequel together were definitely Henry Thomas and Olivia Hussey as Norman and Norma, and with later collaborations with Mike Flanagan in Stephen King adaptations and Haunting of Hill House, Henry Thomas has shown he can be remembered for more than just E.T.
Great sequel. Only complaint is that it’s hard to believe that little old lady actually had the capability of killing three people and disposing their bodies.
MMAFighter38 I know right
I saw Psycho for the first time earlier this year, and I've been thinking of watching Psycho 2.
So the sister of Janet Leigh's character (who is the real life mother of Jamie Lee Curtis) is named Lyla Loomis. Is that a shout out to Dr. Loomis who comes to Jamie Lee Curtis' character in Halloween which was released 5 years earlier (in 1978).
I feel like it has to be.
The name Loomis is from the original Psycho, so if anything Halloween is probably referencing Psycho.
Sam Loomis (Donald Pleasances' character name in 'Halloween') is the name of John Gavins character on the original 'Psycho'.
I love Psycho, I still consider it one of the best films ever made. However, I have always found Psycho II more entertaining and it's nice to know I'm not alone in that opinion. Now I don't think Psycho II is one of the best films ever made, which is interesting when you consider I find it more entertaining. Psycho II used many of the same effective tropes that Psycho did, but it ramped up their use, there was more use of those tropes that were just getting introduced in the first film. So Psycho II is what Psycho could have been in terms of entertainment, had it not had to introduce the tropes that Psycho II used. But introducing those tropes was what makes Psycho a better film... Well that's my logic anyway.
When i was in my teen's not long after PSYCHO 2 came out,i think it was the first movie i bought on
Video VHS back in the 80'S,a huge horror fan ever since.
Its interesting seeing this movie in colour. I should check this movie out. Dyou think youll ever review the Bates Motel. Its a great series. The actor that plays young norman is superb in the show you can see in the show how his mom dominated him throughout his life, leaving him with no personality of his own. The show even depicts norman blacking out envisioning his mother telling him to kill people and women who hes interested in.
Marge: Homer, I don't think you should star in a sequel to Psycho.
Homer: Ohhh, but Sipowicz did it.
Marge: If Detective Sipowicz jumped off a cliff, would you do that too?
Homer: Ohhh, I wish I was Sipowicz.
I like how you sympathise with Norman and want him to conquer his demons and recover from his illness.
I love Hitchcock's Psycho a million times more, but this is also great
Meg Tilly 💖 Meg Tilly 💖 Meg Tilly 💖 !
So glad I'm not the only one who loves this movie!
THE EDITING HAD ME ROLLING!! I love this! You should review the other sequels!
This movie is definitely a guilty pleasure and Psycho III with Jeff Fahey as a creepy drifter is even more fun. These movies are so ridiculous but Perkins is so good that he makes it work.
Just listened to this review taking a shower in a dimly lit room. In the middle of the night. Didn't occur to me until half way through. Lmao
I remember buying this at a comic book store. Such a great movie.
Dennis Franz's best role. He played this type of character (a sleazeball) in many of his films, and his performance was great. This was before he went onto stardom.
Those Toomey bits had me fucking rollin'😆🤣😂 "Go on, Psycho. Pick it up!" 😂🤣😂 ...that's that asshole from Die Hard 2 😂😂👍
Your look is awesome this episode, even by your standards.
As for the movie, I admit, I was reluctant to give it a try, but I think it's growing on me.
Great review! I think I'll have to give Psycho II another look. Also awesome top/dress.
I recently rewatched this and was tense the *Entire* time. No movie has done that to me in like ever
That intro is priceless.
This might be in my top 10 favorite slashers of all time
Stupendous video. I can't agree with the sentiment of "Psycho II>Psycho", but I will agree that this movie is a real achievement, and I watch it often. When Dennis Franz says the line, "Go on, psycho, pick it up,", I always fist-pump like an uber-bro that someone said "psycho" in a Psycho movie (I only wish he had said, "Go on, Psycho II, pick it up!" *looks at camera and winks*)
She shouldn't have told us that spoiler!
This is definitely my favourite of the psycho movies, followed by number 4
I agree, this is actually a very good movie, but I wouldn't say it was better than the original.
The third one was directed by Perkins and is total crap.
The fourth - prequel TV movie is pretty good for what it is.
I'd swap that rating for 3 and 4. 3 is a pretty fun slasher, 4 is so boring.
I rather like the fact that in the first and third movies Norman is the villain, but the "hero" in two and four. It's unique how the series turned out.
I love how he has trouble saying _"cu-cu-cutlery"._
Well this was an unexpected review, with certain things I did not expect to hear. Thank you!
I loved this movie. The cast, the script and the score the outstanding
Thank you for summing up everything that made Psycho 2 one of the better horror sequels . Despite its problems, this was a step up from being a shameless cash grab and became a fascinating character study for Norman, complete with a tragic ending.
5:26 And Norman hated Toomey so much that in the only time Norman swears in the series he calls Toomey a bastard.
I've only ever seen and watched the "Rifftrax" version of Psycho II but from it I more-or-less agree with Allison. It's not a bad movie exactly. (Though I'm not sure I'd say it is better than the original.) And what makes it work and is so "good" is how it DOES make Norman Bates be a sympathetic character and something of the "hero" in the movie. You kind of see how he was a victim of a domineering mother's up-bringing and psychological manipulation/abuse and want to see him succeed and properly re-integrate into society only to have some conspire against him driving him back to madness. Perkins does do a great job with the role and it's fairly easy to buy the connection between him and Tilly (and her growing sympathy for Norman.)
The movie does have some depth and heart to it and, indeed, does more than most sequels try and do.
Loved Psycho 2, once showed it to a friend of mine who laughed at the end scene with the shovel and I felt personally insulted that he laughed. Looking back it is kinda funny though I took the film too seriously to recognize that
Yeah the novel version of Psycho II, like a lot of Robert Bloch's books, starts out pretty interesting and then gets drearily boring and underwhelming. In fact after the opening of the book you find out that Norman died after the first chase scene and that this psychologist character is the one committing the murders and honestly I was more annoyed with how unlikable any of the characters were than I was with the book's commentary on slasher films. The movie does much better justice to Norman's character. But different strokes Alison, the original Psycho is one of my favorite movies of all time.
omg i need that gif NOW, norman bashing the old lady in the head XD
I was like, “will I like this channel?” And then the intro played 😍😍😍
Finally someone with a different opinion
I'm not sure I'd call it an underrated gem, but it's underrated for sure. But I would absolutely LOVE to see the version of this where Walken was Bates.
What a wonderful and detailed review. I agree on most points. I have warmed up to Psycho 3 after many years of just thinking it "OK". Although not as good as Psycho 2, "P3" had much to offer and I think Anthony Perkins did a fine job at directing. I have Psycho 2 on DVD...does anyone have the Blue Ray upgrade and is it worthwhile getting for the Tom Holland commentary?
Of COURSE Christopher Walken was going to play Bates.
Thankfully Anthony Perkins came back . Walken looks nothing like him . Would have been awful lol
Oddly just now stumbling onto your channel now. Definitely subscribing. I like your intro, very late '80s or early '90s late night cable movie series intro....would've not surprised me to see that late at night in my dorm on USA Network.
Thanks!
While the shovel thing was kinda silly, I think it was also pretty powerful. Norman didn't kill very violently. He did when he was his mother, but Norman was a shy and soft-spoken young man. He used poison as his weapon of choice. Poison is one of the least violent and least confrontational ways to kill people, but this woman pushed him to actually get down and dirty. It was because of her that all this happened, and it's because of her that it started happening again. He was done.
1) The Mrs Spool thing would be a bit of a plot point in _Psycho III_ where a reporter suspicious of Norman and the disappearance of Spool investigates and learns that she made being Norman's biological mother up... at least in her mind.
2) We see a bit of the Bates home in the original _Psycho_ but we see far more of it in this film and having watched _Bates Motel_ multiple times, I was surprised to realise how well they recreated not just the exterior, but also the interior. If they weren't filmed in different countries, I'd have assumed they were the same sets.
3) When you mentioned "pointless sequel" and "no more story to tell", I couldn't help but think of _Halloween II._ At least the first two _Psycho_ films, set two decades apart, feel far more like "one long movie."
I've only ever seen Psycho 2 from my version of Rifftrax and I've gotta say I really found myself enjoying it as a film despite the riffing. I found the ending twist to be fairly disappointing mind you and while it didn't ruin the movie for me it took it from great to merely good.
Horror as a genre constantly does this I find. I loved the House on Haunted Hill remake until the evil was released for example.
Perkin's is a fantastic actor, but also a very good screen writer. He wrote the murder mystery 'The Last of Sheila' that is a real gem.
and he wrote it with Stephen Sondheim!
@@SongbirdAlom OMG I'm always stunned when other people know anything about this unknown but excellent film. Thank you!
Thank you for doing this, it's an awesome sequel
Well... The thing with releasing murderers out from prison. Look at Edmund Kemper. He killed his grand paerents and was after being in an asylum for a couple of years. And that worked out fine...
They actually wanted to bring back some of the actors (characters) from the original movie that were still alive at the time! Psycho II was one of the best horror flicks, ever!
Watched it last night, and while it wasnt bad-it wasn't great either. Some below par acting and writing. The kills were so so and I didnt become attached to anyone. 6/10
I just watched this movie in B&W and it's like an entirely different film. Much better in my opinion,
This should be on a double DVD with 'Deadly Friend'. Enjoy the over-the-top murder of crazy old ladies!
Just in time for Halloween
