    This is the Umschagplatz of the Warsaw ghetto - the point of no return to the death camp at Treblinka.

    Extraordinary to see a place I've read about filled with so much suffering. It reminds me of being at Drancy in Paris where the same events took place. Thank you for posting this.

    If you look at the Umschlagplatz square on which the victims were held, you can see an original portion of the ghetto wall that ran right down the middle of Stawki Street. That enclosure was shut off at both ends, and the square it formed was the actual Umschlagplatz on which that given days victims had to wait for the train that would take them to Treblinka. Train records show that they used the same train cars everyday; and Nazis had the train making one round trip from Warsaw to Treblinka and back everyday beginning on July 22, 1942. The train that was used numbered between 50 and 60 cars, depending on how many Jews had been rounded up for that days transport, with each car holding at least 100 people. The first building you pointed out was the Headquarters of the SS who were in charge of the Warsaw Ghetto, and it did indeed stand outside the limits of the Ghetto wall. The former Jewish Hospital on the opposite side of the street, which was inside the ghetto wall, had a large courtyard behind it that was used as an overflow holding point for victims who had to remain at the Umschlagplatz overnight. This occurred whenever the Nazis and Ukrainian guards collected more people than could be transported on that days train. The hospital building itself was used as a holding point as well during the winter months. It's amazing how over 350,000 people passed through this place, yet it remained unknown to almost everyone until the memorial was built. I don't know if you mentioned it, or maybe I missed it, but is the street you were on still named Stawki Street?

      Indeed it is still Stawki and it has its own tram stop too.

    @MarcoBocoure Who has it then?
    Germans? All of them?
    Even those who were also killed in death camps? ;-)

  • @BratWody

    @MarcoBocoure Sure, so it's logics and facts, not all nazis were Germans, not all Germans were Nazis, no? ;-)
    There were Nazis all around Europe, why not to say that many countries and nations openly cooperated with the III Reich in WW II like France per example or Lithuania, I am a Jewish guy, from Poland. Chill out.
