  • Taos, New Mexico has a long and rich history that dates back thousands of years. The Taos Pueblo, which is located just north of the town, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in the United States. It is believed that the pueblo was founded around 1000 AD by the Tiwa people.
The first Europeans to arrive in Taos were members of Francisco Vázquez de Coronado's expedition in 1540. They were impressed by the size and beauty of the pueblo, and they named the area "Taos," which is the Spanish word for "adobe." In the 17th century, Taos became an important trading center for the Spanish and the Pueblo people. The Taos Trail, which was a branch of the Santa Fe Trail, connected Taos to other parts of New Mexico and the American Southwest. In 1680, the Pueblo people of Taos joined a revolt against Spanish rule. The revolt was successful, and the Spanish were expelled from New Mexico for 12 years. The Spanish returned to Taos in 1692, and they reestablished their control over the area. Taos remained an important trading center, and it also became a center for art and culture.
In the 19th century, Taos became a popular destination for artists and writers. Many famous artists, including Georgia O'Keeffe and Ansel Adams, lived and worked in Taos.

Gosh that made me miss Taos. Used to vacation there every year but haven’t been since 2022 because I’ve been sick.

I’m coming to see Kit Carson’s place! When the Navajo burned down, rapped, tortured and slaughtered everything and everyone in that town. They didn’t touch a single rock or blade of grass of Kit’s home or a hair on his family’s heads. They knew he would hunt down and kill every last one of them. He was a man in full. One of the most lost impressive fighting men in history and was only about 5.4. I think they based the comic book character (Logan) Wolverine on of him.

Taos means "place of red willows."
