My 2.5 n/a Subaru is at 182500 on the original engine. Replaced the head gaskets for MLS versions at 140k and She's going strong. The key to these engines is regular maintenance, keeping the oil topped off, and using the right coolant.
I had a 2010 Forester 2.5 na. I put new heads and head gaskets on at 190,000. I put another 70,000 on it and something on the bottom end of the motor broke. So, 260,000 on the engine. Body was mint and I live in Upstate NY. No rust. I traded it in and got $2,000 for the trade. In retrospect, I wish I kept it and put a motor in it.
My 1999 Forester started leaking oil from the head gasket around 90,000 miles. I replaced the head gasket myself for $500 in parts and tools, but I kept finding more broken parts. I spent more on repairs on that car--before the head gasket--than on gas!
The H3s are underpowered and really don't do anything exceptional. But I bought one (an 06) base model with 110,000 miles and my daughter drove it for almost five years (from getting her license at 16 to 21 yrs old) and never really had an issue and sold it recently with 190,000 miles. Maintenance was minimal with a battery, and then the power steering pump, hoses and rack leaked so I replaced them at about 160k miles and it really turned out to be a great vehicle for her. My daughter loved it and it was a relatively inexpensive vehicle to buy, own, and maintain. I was pleasantly surprised because I was never a fan of the H3. With all that being said, they don't really do anything great, but they do almost everything pretty good, at least that was our experience.
The Subaru Coolant conditioner is a British product made by Holts. Radweld. It’s a coolant stop leak product. Same identical bottle they just embossed Subaru instead of HOLTS.
I love the Captain John went over there to fix the Hummer ended up helping them fix a car and then got around to fixing the Hummer. Nothing like loving to fix cars and having friends that fix cars
That's funny my 02 Toyota tundra has same fan noise from its 4.7l. My son calls it the tour bus because that's what it sounds like when you take off. I say it turbo without having turbo lol.
It actually sounds a lot like mold 2.8 s 10. The fan on the 2.8 engines were actually louder than the engine and that's exactly what I remember my truck sounded like if I remember right someone told me that the pitch of the blades and the direction of the fan were different on a 2.8 and it made them incredibly loud
Dude the unlimited tacos were slamming!!! I got the flour tacos. to me they were the best and that hot sauce in those little round containers were BOSS!!!!!! Also love Taco Hut in Hutchison.
My 1989 C6 trans with a deep pan leaked just about 4 quarts past the original cork gasket and still shifted fine. I had just bought the F250 to refurbish, so I only drove it 16 miles home.
Years ago, when i was in high school, burger king had a promo on its small burgers/cheeseburgers for $0.29 and $0.39. My 130lb self ate 14 cheeseburgers
Jonny and Jon are two of the most awesome guys... and they're great mechanics too. If I didn't live 1000 miles away, I'd make him the first shop for every repair on my cars. But for now, he's got enough of #HooviesGarbage to last him a lifetime. :D
Check the vent Had one go bad on a plow truck. Over pressured the trans and caused leak else where on the trans, out the dipstick almost started a fire.
Did you replace or reuse the old seal? Depending on condition of the seal could be from the pan. Could also be where the trans mounts to the front most part of things. There is also a pressure release hose that often people forget to clip back to the radiator
Old cars are fun. My 02 Dodge was just leaking gasoline. Nothing is worse than gasoline smell. Luckily it was a just a $80 line fix. It has 272,000 miles and all lines are factory.
If that trans. keeps leaking, I'd start to suspect a cracked transmission case. Cracks can drive us crazy, after checking all the seals and something keeps leaking. And not easy to find, some are hard to see they are so fine.
Yeah I know he's got stuff going on. I would just be anxious about getting in the way of a business that also has stuff 🤦 but I don't know the details with Elliott, of course.
on my h2 one of the pump bolts behind the converter was loose i pulled the trans and changed the seal for the converter twice and then seen it seeping out by useing a bore scope cam up behind the converter
It's almost as if Subaru said to themselves: "You know our head-gaskets suck so much, it would really be helpful to the techs if we put a harness junction right here to save them time!".
I had a gm dealer in Minnesota that used to buy a ton of those h3 off me years ago. Always thought they were steaming piles. I see they haven't got any better with age.
Your fan clutch sounds bad if it's always winding it up. My 2005 Trailblazer fan stops winding up after it shifts into third then its normal until you stop and start it again.
to be a true Sue-Bee owner, you HAVE to have had an engine swap. My Friend has owned 4 sue-Bee's, and so far, 3 of them got a new engine (this is over decades, not at one time). His son is on his second Sue-Bee, and he has swapped an engine on the first. If you ask a REAL Sue-Bee fan if they would be willing to swap an engine, they won't HESITATE to answer "of course! will give me another ten years!". *This does not apply to the SVX- or as one SVX owner told me..... :" we don't talk about that....ever..."
That happened to me and I found out that the bolts securing the torque converter only had 1 of 4 still in and the pilot bearing stub was torn completely off allowing all the trans fluid to leak out.
I had a S10 Blazer that was pushing transmission fluid out of the breather. Ended up being a bad seal on the input side of the transfer case. Check the transfer fluid level.
Do the H3s have the slowest blinking turn signals the world has ever seen, like the Colorados and Canyons had in this generation? Also, that thing sounds like a diesel with that fan! 😂
When are you going to re install? I pulled mine out (pain) rebuilt (bigger pain) and NOW I WANT TO REINSTALL.. But I want you to experience the PAIN ALSO.. come on JRgoooo
Heres to hoping its not slipping clutches or servos orworn out clutch bands with worn out friction material inside the transmission. because if it is then the whole transmission has to come out?
Never been a big fan of the Hummer H3’s I preferred the Escalades over the Hummers back in the day, though I have to admit I am pretty curious about this hummer restoration and rebuild
Do you by chance end up with a wet passenger floor? Not being the sunroof or the windshield but something under the wiper cowl leaks on my '08 Hummer and I have been unable to trace it down. AC drain hose is also cleared out
i Remember my father in the 60s spending 6 grand or so on a car and car NEVER GOT HOME be four he would put one quart on machine oil in the Radiator and in return he never had water pump problems and there was never a problem with the hoses and he would put a hundred thousand miles on a car be four trading one in and doing the same agean I just find it interesting that in the last twenty years every one is trying to sell water pump Coolant oil
I know I'm in my sixties now. And therefore know nothing. But, back in my day we did silly stuff like put a pan under a leaking car to cut down on the mess. Didn't know exactly where it was? Add another.
I kicked my Colorado to the curb because I would drive and when shifting 3rd to 4th it would squeak but only at high speeds. I changed the fluid and everything and it kept doing it
Look if someone is doing an engine swap I have no choice but to jump in! 😂
First to like and first to reply
Put in the hummer a 6.0 ls.
It would be rude not to jump in. Politeness goes a long way. LOL
When a friend asks for help you help them
Good times

I just did head gasket for my Outback 2010 @ 126k miles. Ready for 100k more!
subaru engine pulls are my favorite, from running (knocking) to engine out in 53 minutes on a 08 STI is my record time.
The boys over at Donut are pros at Subaru engine swaps now
That transmission leaks more than a 80's GM 200R4. Still a nice ride.
If it has an aftermarket radio, with the module, you have to pull the radio fuse to get hp tuners to read properly.
Weird!
Engine start up montage ending with swinging fragrance tree is great🤩

You just described the Hummer/Wrangler ownership experience pretty good.
My 06 Hummer H3 (5X5 ,5 cylinder 5 Speed manual) does one thing extremely well !
*IT LOOKS FREAKING AWESOME !*
2008 and up is the better option with a little more power .
The Subaru Coolant conditioner is a British product made by Holts. Radweld. It’s a coolant stop leak product. Same identical bottle they just embossed Subaru instead of HOLTS.

C’mon JR we’re dying to see you back in your own shop again. Dream shop back to garage is painful
Folding pocket pry bar is the best tool ever. Taco..all you can stand. Awesome content.
I would eat two Arby's Triple Cheese Melts and a large order of Potato cakes for lunch in HS. I think all of that was under $5 too.
That fan sounds like the fan from an old F550 with a 7.3 diesel I used to drive for work
You need Bounty, the quicker picker upper.
I thought the fix for most, if not all 4L60E problems was a new transmission given that they grow on trees.
Oh it is, but if I can fix it without pulling it that would rock! 💯
That's funny my 02 Toyota tundra has same fan noise from its 4.7l. My son calls it the tour bus because that's what it sounds like when you take off. I say it turbo without having turbo lol.
Love the Car ninja guys always smiling I’m sure it’s a great place to work! Great video as always
There are a lot of debates on that coolant additive. I'm in the no additive, use MLS gasket team.
We need to know more about the sierra RS cosworth in Jonny's shop
It actually sounds a lot like mold 2.8 s 10. The fan on the 2.8 engines were actually louder than the engine and that's exactly what I remember my truck sounded like if I remember right someone told me that the pitch of the blades and the direction of the fan were different on a 2.8 and it made them incredibly loud
Replace the engine fan with an electric fan that runs quietly and efficiently.
Nah, just put a thermal clutch in it
Dude the unlimited tacos were slamming!!! I got the flour tacos. to me they were the best and that hot sauce in those little round containers were BOSS!!!!!! Also love Taco Hut in Hutchison.
As an owner of a 2009 with the I5 I can feel your pain.
My 1989 C6 trans with a deep pan leaked just about 4 quarts past the original cork gasket and still shifted fine. I had just bought the F250 to refurbish, so I only drove it 16 miles home.
At least it wasn't leaking gear oil as that isn't a pleasant smell
I have two subies one at 200k and another at 196k both running nice and smooth with no issues
Years ago, when i was in high school, burger king had a promo on its small burgers/cheeseburgers for $0.29 and $0.39. My 130lb self ate 14 cheeseburgers

same wish they were in texas
That sounds like my s10 when running the AC. I switched to electric fan because when that clutch locked out, mt power and gas milage tanked.
That sounds like a XM1116 @3:35 all day. The only thing missing is the rock at high speeds.
JR, what about taking the fan off completely and hooking up some electric fans? Increase MPG and some HP????
"My entire garage smells like transmission fluid" Who was thinking Absolute Jake must have a new body wash?
Check the vent Had one go bad on a plow truck. Over pressured the trans and caused leak else where on the trans, out the dipstick almost started a fire.
Did you replace or reuse the old seal? Depending on condition of the seal could be from the pan. Could also be where the trans mounts to the front most part of things. There is also a pressure release hose that often people forget to clip back to the radiator
Jr loves to wrench 😊🤘🏽🔥
Old cars are fun. My 02 Dodge was just leaking gasoline. Nothing is worse than gasoline smell. Luckily it was a just a $80 line fix. It has 272,000 miles and all lines are factory.
Bummer about the Hummer.
Hondabond, could have saved the Titanic if they had it.
Need to do a video on that white sierra in background, never seen one in the u.s before
It's an H3, it. Ant help it. That massive sucking sound isn't a vacuum leak. It's because it actually sucks!
If that trans. keeps leaking, I'd start to suspect a cracked transmission case. Cracks can drive us crazy, after checking all the seals and something keeps leaking. And not easy to find, some are hard to see they are so fine.
Surprise Subaru content is great
At this point you're practically a part time employee at the car ninja's.
I had a lot of respect when JR not only got out of the way with the H3, but, jumped in and lent a hand.
Gotta show appreciation for the use of the list, etc. (Honestly kinda surprised he doesn't use Elliott's warehouse more)
@@rpavlik1 to be fair I think Elliot has a few things going on lately, so he might not have the time to have him over to film.
Yeah I know he's got stuff going on. I would just be anxious about getting in the way of a business that also has stuff 🤦 but I don't know the details with Elliott, of course.
on my h2 one of the pump bolts behind the converter was loose i pulled the trans and changed the seal for the converter twice and then seen it seeping out by useing a bore scope cam up behind the converter
do you work part time for the Ninja in exchange for being able to use his lifts and stuff?
It's almost as if Subaru said to themselves: "You know our head-gaskets suck so much, it would really be helpful to the techs if we put a harness junction right here to save them time!".
I had a gm dealer in Minnesota that used to buy a ton of those h3 off me years ago. Always thought they were steaming piles. I see they haven't got any better with age.
The top of the food pyramid is taco nutrients!
Your fan clutch sounds bad if it's always winding it up. My 2005 Trailblazer fan stops winding up after it shifts into third then its normal until you stop and start it again.
My old neighbor had a 4Runner with the same loud fan. It goes mach 10 when turning on and you can hear it several hundred feet away
Much love from ND!
Kind of surprised they didn't vacuum fill the coolant in the Subaru.
I love the 2.5 naturally aspirated Subaru engine. Everything is so easy to work on. I have MLS head gaskets on mine, Subaru Blue coolant no additive.
Never mind my 3 -- I got *smoked* today. If it was a drag race I'd be looking at the back side of the 7 others in front of me.
14:13 You made me think about my High School Days, when I went to Jack In The Crack for their tacos. I love those tacos! Good Times!
06:55 Hawk-Eye is watching you!
My H3 makes the same fan noise but only for about the first 1/4 mile of driving after it has sat in my garage overnight. It goes away after that.
to be a true Sue-Bee owner, you HAVE to have had an engine swap. My Friend has owned 4 sue-Bee's, and so far, 3 of them got a new engine (this is over decades, not at one time). His son is on his second Sue-Bee, and he has swapped an engine on the first.

Is that a white Ford Sierra RS Cosworth in the background? 🙂
You gonna fix the headrest on the Jag?
That happened to me and I found out that the bolts securing the torque converter only had 1 of 4 still in and the pilot bearing stub was torn completely off allowing all the trans fluid to leak out.
I had a S10 Blazer that was pushing transmission fluid out of the breather. Ended up being a bad seal on the input side of the transfer case. Check the transfer fluid level.
Wow. Maybe the H3 is actually worse than the Versa😉
A hard bump stop is actually a good time 🤤
Did I see a Ford Sierra Cosworth in the background?
Do the H3s have the slowest blinking turn signals the world has ever seen, like the Colorados and Canyons had in this generation? Also, that thing sounds like a diesel with that fan! 😂
Yup, it's an early electronic flasher IIRC, the click is very electronic 💯
The transmission leak mystery continues!
agreed. I skipped all through the video and never saw any sort of answer or help
When are you going to re install? I pulled mine out (pain) rebuilt (bigger pain) and NOW I WANT TO REINSTALL..
But I want you to experience the PAIN ALSO.. come on JRgoooo
I am totally ok with the high end Sony cam on the channel
I've had gm 4300 vortec sound just like that
Heres to hoping its not slipping clutches or servos orworn out clutch bands with worn out friction material inside the transmission. because if it is then the whole transmission has to come out?
Early af, but I’m west coastin’ it this week!
Update on the Escalade engine swap?
Might have to repair the fan clutch. I had to repair mine and it was a lot better
Whatever happened to the car crusher?
Today on Watch JR go, watch me go work for The Car Ninja😁😁😁
23 tacos! That’s gotta come back to haunt you later
my neighbor has a old gmc with the same engine and the fan noise when they leave the street is SO bad it sounds like a 18 wheeler fully loaded
Did you get the main wiring harness checked out?
I stand corrected, heater fan relay that overheats and causes fire
I had a 2002 Envoy that had the same motor and same fan noise .
What happened to your QuickJacks?
3:19 i had an 89 s13 with a ca18det swap shit had the fan attached to the engine made my s13 sound like a hardbody
Never been a big fan of the Hummer H3’s I preferred the Escalades over the Hummers back in the day, though I have to admit I am pretty curious about this hummer restoration and rebuild
And today, JR parts the red sea
And gets a job repairing Subarus
Lets see a first gen Colorado or canyon 4x4 now.
That radiator fan sounds like a Tacoma Fan 😂
Completely overfilled and he just was topping it off 😅
Do you by chance end up with a wet passenger floor? Not being the sunroof or the windshield but something under the wiper cowl leaks on my '08 Hummer and I have been unable to trace it down. AC drain hose is also cleared out
i Remember my father in the 60s spending 6 grand or so on a car and car NEVER GOT HOME be four he would put one quart on machine oil in the Radiator and in return he never had water pump problems and there was never a problem with the hoses and he would put a hundred thousand miles on a car be four trading one in and doing the same agean
I just find it interesting that in the last twenty years every one is trying to sell water pump Coolant oil
I know I'm in my sixties now. And therefore know nothing. But, back in my day we did silly stuff like put a pan under a leaking car to cut down on the mess. Didn't know exactly where it was? Add another.
15:45 hose not connected.
Lucky you topped up the trans fluid before you drove it over… 😂
I kicked my Colorado to the curb because I would drive and when shifting 3rd to 4th it would squeak but only at high speeds. I changed the fluid and everything and it kept doing it
I hate it when I get transmission fluid everywhere. So nice that all my fleet don't leak right now, at least the daily drivers😉
How many cars do you have?
Omg that's a lot of transmission fluid 😲
It's probably the front seal, as dictated by Murphy's law. Lol
Hi....what is the mileage you get in Hummer H3.
Can the engine be replaced with a more fuel efficient one.
Ninja has a 3 door Cosworth in the shop.
Same thing happened to my 2005 Chevy Colorado
What was the problem with the hummer h3? Did u find it?
Nope, worst part is torque converter bolts. When you drop one of those bolts into the bell housing a small part of your soul dies.
