In the Indiana Fever’s last game against the Minnesota Lynx, Caitlin Clark did not have her best game. Even so, Kelsey Mitchell picked up her slack, tallying 21 points in 8-18 shooting. Earlier in the season, it seemed like Kelsey Mitchell was too ball dominant to play with Caitlin Clark. Now, Kelsey Mitchell has been playing Off-Ball, which is contributing to her success.

the Fever lack defense. I've been very pessimistic about whether they can improve, especially after they waived Celeste Taylor. Sides is useless on defense, despite her delusions about being a defensive coach. so then how are they supposed to improve, if nobody knows how to play defense?

Not only does Caitlin see the court better than everyone, she sees it faster the way a chess grandmaster sees the entire chess board. If Kelsey lets CC bring the ball up, it gives Kelsey a better chance to see openings for herself.

Mitchell has been doing a lot better lately. She works well with Clark and Boston and I see the overall chemistry getting better game after game. It takes time to turn a bad team into a decent one but I think it’s starting to come together.
I love all the sport movies... would love for Caitlin and the Fever's story to be on "the big screen" some day.

I like Kelsey Mitchell, she's good and she's starting to have fun. She lost her dad, he was young and she was sad. She's smiling again.
watching her in pressers, she seems like she's always keeping her feelings under wraps. but she wants to be there for her teammates.
I know this won't help but I lost both my parents but my Dad always told me that we start dieing from the day we were born...still didn't help with the sorrow but true.

Of all the sites analyzing The Fever and Caitlin Clark, I think this is the most spot on with really insightful and accurate analysis. Finally someone that sees what I see from Kelsey Mitchell. She does seem to be at least partially buying into her proper role vis a vis Caitlin lately. I think she actually passed the ball to Caitlin once in the Lynx game. Caitlin needs more touches and shots in the mid range too, as shown by her recent first scores from mid-range and driving to the hole. Good job Carter, I’m now subscribed!

I'm new to women's basketball, but from what I've seen it looked a lot like everyone on the Fever played like they were the only one on the team. They are starting to realize Caitlin is helping Their game. I lived the football analogy he makes around 7ish. 😮😊
mitchell is a great shooter too. Have you noticed that once clark passes the ball once she knows she will never see that ball again. the body language is hilarious.

But she's still the only player in the team to be given the ball at the halfway line by Clark and start hearing the John Cena music and decide to go solo, even when the defense is already set. And it drives me crazy. I agree with this video but you can see the defeat in her posture when she has to pass! XD

Another great breakdown! Kelsey Mitchell is buying into the CC22 fast-paced way to play and finding out that she ABSOLUTELY FITS in that style and even gets BETTER STATS within it. Mitchell is a free agent so is concerned about her stats, but now the light bulb has gone on for her. Just one set of omissions for Mitchell--she had 3 very nice ASSISTS against the Lynx! Yes, they were all to Katie Lou Samuelson, but I'll take it! Maybe use those clips for a future video--a possible clickbait title: "Kelsey Mitchell Challenges Caitlin for Team Assist Leader?" Then there was one where Mitchell participated in a fast sequence of whipping the ball around the horn that led to a basket--I could hardly believe my eyes! Then there was another play that was Mitchell-to-Smith-to-Boston quick passing for a bucket--beautiful stuff! (maybe it was Mitchell to Boston to Smith, not sure) As you said, I think it's just taken Mitchell this long to buy in and learn how to play off CC22. Mitchell hit key, key buckets in crunch time in the win over the Liberty and now the Lynx.
KM also had rebounds in the last game. She’s turning into a well rounded player that will be setting and breaking records all over if she keeps working hard with her teammates.

there was definitely a while where Mitchell wasn't playing with CC. I remember one play where KM blew past her from the rebound, while CC was calling for the ball: dribbled all the way down the court. (and got stopped, IIRC.) probably not hostile, just going with her default: the Fever wasn't about using a point guard, so it's every player for themself. great way to lose ball games.
Agree. There are some great players on the Fever.... they just aren't used to playing as a team. My favorite part of watching Caitlin play are her assists to her team. Simply amazing.
There are not CC only fans. Anyone who has been watching Clark in college knows she is a team player. Her passes are my absolute favorite part of her game. I didn't like Mitchell's selfish dribble/ shoot style of play. She is getting better.

If Mitchell is dribbling... she's not playing well with Clark... just get open and catch the damn ball!
She can dribble, she has a nasty stepback crossover that I would be sad to see go away. But it should be 3-4 dribbles most times.

I’m a few months into the WNBA now, I wish I had known about and followed Caitlin in college. My top fever players are Clark, Boston, Mitchell, Hull. Mitchell can be an exciting player to watch but early on she has had issues as you have analyzed with her role in the team. Mitchell’s biggest problem is she is not getting good coaching. I think this team has great potential. I love Clark and Boston, and I love it when, Caitlin is surrounded by defenders and she can pass off to Mitchell and Mitchell scores! Hopefully, Mitchell is beginning to see that she has value in her new role and that Caitlin is going to pass to her if she’s open. ❤🏀

To add to the fact that it is baffling Clark is not on the Olympic team is she has already won two world international championships working for the USA. The UC17 and then the UC19 (WHERE SHE WAS MVP). She wore the USA Jersey twice and beat the world both times. Is a disgrace when they say she's a rook and can't compete. On the world stage...for the USA...she is a proven world beating monster. Mitchel? She'll learn. Love her. Seems she's not adverse to learning what's going on. 👍👍

I think a video that would really take off, is if you could show recent games how some of Christie Sides plays, are NOT able to translate into buckets. Not just yelling and denouncing like whats on twitter.

@@boohoohoohoo the guesses I saw were about Sides telling CC to stop shooting, and not expect to be passed to, and basically stand in the corner being a decoy so other players could pass and score.
but what were they actually talking about? we'll never know. CC is too much of a professional, and Sides may be stupid, but she's not going to advertise her stupidity.
She is athletic and very fast but doesn't have the vision of CC. And she is a ball hog. A player can be wide open under the basket and she won't pass it.

However, you place CC and AB on a higher level than Kelsey without mentioning that Kelsey is the Fever's top scorer thus far in 2024.

Where Kelsey Mitchell is showing her worth is in CC's new confidence in her dribble and handle.
CC is holding her dribble better, and showing a new spicy handle. I credit that to Kelsey rubbing off on her in practice.
I’m so glad somebody pointed this out. Kelsey has had one of the best handles in the wbb for years and I was thinking at the start of the season she could really help Caitlin out with her dribbling. Caitlin has been putting together better combos recently and she hasn’t been getting picked either.

I think Kelsey Mitchell, is VERY capable of playing with CC, they compliment each other greatly, and they are both good play makers, ball handlers and shooters.
You are so right about stars being born. Caitlin Clark is A STAR LIKE THE SUN. Angel Reese is a planet circling around the sun. Her orbit is dependent upon the gravity effect of the star.

Question: if Mitchell played point last year, why the heck sides don't make her point when she takes Caitlin out...but no wheeler takes it.
I wasn't watching then, but I suspect the Fever never used a point guard for anything but bringing the ball forward if she happened to take the inbound or the rebound. getting the ball to the PG does not seem to be anything they're used to doing. they're learning, but it's slow.

Great video as always. I've been equating CC and KMs budding connection as a QB to WR relationship too. I think that one thing Clark could do better is that Clark tends to throw the ball for KM to cut and there is a few times where KM is clearly wired that when she is close to the three line to take up that position because she wants to be in position to catch and shoot. This has lead to one or two of the misses and they can probably connect better on that.
On the Kelsey Mitchel fast break shot I agree it wasn't the highest percentage choice but I'm not 100% mad at it because I don't expect her to make the CC play. She has 2 crashing rebounders so its a high chance if she misses there they can still get the ball back and in fact NaLyssa fumbles the rebound and otherwise her and KLS were in good position for 2nd chance points. Obviously if she drains the three we all love it but just my two cents on that play.

Kelsey has changed since she was benched by Sides. I think she has realized that Caitlin will contribute positively to her points and Kelsey's focus appears to be "a team win" which is Caitlin's objective each game. Great observation and analysis, Carter!!
It took her longer than Boston to get the message , but there have been a number of occasions when she moved smoothly into position and took the pass with room to score. She is spending less time dribbling ineffectively than previously. When you have a great playmaker it takes time to realise all the advantages and adapt. Basketball being one of those games that is obsessed by the numbers rather than the significance of the statistics helps to continue the blind obsession with individual figures rather than the playing of a TEAM game.

They’re working really well together lately, you can see KM pass a lot more and trust her teammates (esp Caitlin) to get the ball back to her if she’s open because Caitlin will every time

Kelsey hasn't had so many wide open shots in her life, she has to be loving that! The only problem is that she sometimes has tunnel vision, like she's the only player on the floor. As you showed, sometimes she doesn't pass when someone else has a better shot opportunity.
Something snapped in Kelsey about 10 games ago and she has been brilliant since. The more she accepts and understands her role in the offense the more successful she’s going to be

Finally, Fever is playing like a team. The Olympic break was well needed. They returned and look like they've been practicing on how to work together. Kelsey Mitchell isn't fighting to be relevant in CC's shadow. She's found the way to work with CC. KM had been playing like she wasn't on a team. She was determined to do her own thing. That didn't work well for her. She and CC are on point now.
Great video, Carter. You understand the game and your insights are spot on, especially that Mitchell is starting to be a better teammate (and she's even acknowledging CC's great passes now and then)!

this is like being in the locker room: the coach breaking it down for everyone, focusing on Kelsey's play but being supportive and encouraging, "see how well this worked? we're getting so much better at this!" and everyone feels good, even about their mistakes: they know what to do next time, and they feel confident they can do it. you are a natural coach, and we appreciate getting to hear it.

Kelsey is doing better but early in Lynx game she had the yips not catching CCs passes, other than like a little less selfishness like to see her average 3 assists a game and pass the ball more, a lot of times Clark or someone is wide open behind her and she still forces the shot. AB and Samuelson need to learn that more as well to kick back out when they collapse the paint.
They double Catlin and Mitchell, and teammates are killing the open shooting. Team are trying to stop Catlin and giving up open 3"S and shot after shot in the paint. Teams are doubling Catlin and losing the game.

One thing I'd like to see the Fever change, is to not have Caitlin be the one assigned to get back on defense. That keeps her at the key, when she's a pretty good rebounder and would pick up some of those missed shots if she could be in the paint more. She could also be more involved in the inside game, back cutting, slashing, etc.
I am a big Kelsey Mitchell fan. She’s mature, intelligent and a natural leader. I thought maybe she was a B1G academic player but couldn’t find that she was. However she did obtain a Masters degree in sports administration from University of Cincinnati during the Covid period. So she’s always trying to improve herself. She’s going to make a great coach or gm someday. I do believe she’s figured out how to play with CC. The trio of Boston, Mitchell, and Clark is going to be great.

Kelsey Mitchell is a great player. I think she gets a lot of criticism she doesn’t deserve. Some websites are just brutal to her but Carter gets it. Carter nailed it when he said she’s getting better. She’s still figuring out how to play with Clark. Just like Clark is figuring out how to play with them. I think Fever can be a really great team.
CC and Mitchell are neck and neck in overall points, last I checked both were in the top 10 in overall points and Mitchell is maybe 10 behind CC in overall 3s.
as of right now Mitchell is 9th and CC is 10th overall points CC is 4th in 3s Mitchell is 6th

Defense is what’s really making the difference against these good teams. Hull has been huge in that way. Check the minutes and the wins with Hull. Wallace and wheeler +- and defense isn’t good.

If CC tightens up her handle and works on a "shake and bake" move, it’s over. It will free up 3 point shots, and get KM open for a dish. They are capable of getting into the finals in the next year or two; but they may need a coaching change too.

Off topic here. I only watched a couple Fever games last year following up on AB, I'm from SC. I have watched some clips on Grace, as she was pretty good in collage. So why doesn't she get any minutes? Is it because Wheeler needs to play to affirm the high salary the Fever are putting out? Or did Grace have a bad season last year? Or does Sides just try to kill everyone's career when they enter the Fever organization?

Instead of ignoring Clark every time she has the ball, Mitchell ignores her only nine out of 10 times now.
CC has to realize that Mitchell only runs 100 percent once she starts amd only straight forward. No lateral movement. She cant adjust and i dont think she will try, since it's her game.
Other players can sl9w 9r react to the ball.
I feel Mitchell is too impulsive. She also seems to hate passing to CC.
For a feed, i think sje always needs to be led the pass, or only do it whem she's set up. Dont really see her with peripheral vision.

There's no doubt in my mind that her assist total has been artificially inflated by the irrational hatred toward allowing her to score.
I really like the Stockton comparison, but I would lean towards Magic because of the rebounding similarities.

Why are people saying Clark has changed her game , started driving to the basket passing because she's not hitting 3s like she did . I wouldn’t expect her to stay after the off-season so the Fever will have to get another shooting guard that draws the attention Mitchell does. Hard to do. Most of Mitchell’s buckets the last game was from Boston and other players. Did you see when Mitchell made that block at the end and the lynx had to foul? CC held her hands out to pass it to her and Mitchell looked her off and dribbled out and took the foul and shot the free throws instead.
I thought so too, but when I played it back a few times it looks to me like she didn't actually look in her direction. I don't think she saw CC.

Great job. Kelsey has so much natural ability, she just needs to get her head in the game.
You mention the GSW here a lot (for good reason) but something you said reminded me of something a commentator said about the Indiana Pacers during the playoffs. One of the announcers said “the amazing thing with Indiana is that there is no wasted movement. Every dribble has a purpose and that purpose moves the ball seamlessly.” (I think it might’ve been JJ Redick 😂)
But I think the Fever should play basically exactly like the Pacers. Fastest pace, ball movement, high assist numbers (everyone gets involved not just the PG), and every dribble has a purpose. The biggest difference I can think of between them is that the Fever have (what seems like) a higher usage rate of the PnR game, with CC and AB.

But yes, the Fever should take a LOT of inspiration from the Pacers.
But to be fair I’ll never complain about Kelsey taking it to the paint, she’s one of the only players on that team that will drive in and make the shot
