    If you’re a cigar smoker you can use your cigar butts in the smoker. They burn slowly and stay lit with very little effort! And the bees seem to enjoy a quality cigar! Mine seem to like Macenudos or Acid Churchill butts best…

      I think that's what it's called that I just got what a surreal experience man how was it for you do you have other critters have like cats and worms and other little critters praying mantises what about praying mantises does anyone know about that? Will the praying mantis eat a honey bee? Will the honeybee eat the praying mantis egg case is that should say cases .

      @@HuckleberryHavoc We have a lot of other critters. We have chickens, an outdoor cat, tons of worms and snakes around the property, a dog, and visiting nocturnal animals. Birds, dragonflies, and spiders will snag a bee here and there, but otherwise we haven’t had any predator problems.

    H there, have a newbie smoker question; can you add fuel along the way or does it have to run out of fuel and then relight it? Haven't run out of fuel with my one hive and have no idea how many hives a smoker will take me through. Have watched your smoker video and don't recall if you mentioned it.....of course:)

    • @RascalApiary
      @RascalApiary  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For the practical exam in North Carolina they allow one relight (can't add fuel as you go).
      If it's just you beekeeping and no exam, you can add fuel as you go.

      @ 11:03 into the video I don't even know how many times it caused it to soak it in and question and comment on things in a girl in the class that nobody wants to be in like at a job or something maybe like just get it over with and you keep asking questions keep asking questions if you run out of questions then MoveOn going through the same thing over and over and over again it's time to change things up and do something

    • @RascalApiary
      @RascalApiary  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! Ask away. The bees definitely like the clover, but we also have dandelions, tulip poplar, red maples, and many other plants that they also enjoy. It depends on the week and sometimes even the time of day.

  • @Mr.Bill...

    I've wanted to keep bees and found a brand new 10 frame 2 high bee hive that a person was throwing away because they put bees in the new boxes and 4 days later the bees died. He thinks the bee box may have gotten some termite killer sprayed on it and thats his option on why they died. I have cleaned the entire box, frams and base with soap and water and left it out in the sun to dry and air out. Do you think it will be safe for bees or should I throw it away?

    • @RascalApiary
      @RascalApiary  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It might be worth a shot, but we prefer to err on the side of caution. If you do plan on trying, I’d air the box out for as long as possible before introducing bees though (at least a week or so).

    Do you use foundation-less frames? any advice on how to start using them and avoid cross-comb?

    • @RascalApiary
      @RascalApiary  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some are foundationless, and some have foundation. In order to have the bees drawn the comb straight on foundationless frames, we’d put them between two drawn frames. Another option is to use a guide. A paint stick in the top bar of the frame works well.

      If they’re overwintered nucs then you can do it at any time, but I’d personally wait until it’s been between 7-10 days from installation to give them a little more time to get used to their new home.

    How do I know which extractor to buy?
    In the process of search. I am looking for hand crank and able to hold maybe 9 frames.

    • @RascalApiary
      @RascalApiary  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s all a balance on how much you’re willing to spend and the options you want. That being said, if you belong to a local beekeeping association, you should ask if the club has one to use. Many of the clubs have them for their members’ use as that’s one thing the dues pay for. Our club has much nicer extractors than the one we have, but having our own is worth it to us.

    Hi there, have a question about the queen excluders. In the wild, do queens lay anywhere or do they generally lay in the lower parts near entrances for ventilation? I'm torn between using an excluder and not usiing one... Thank you

    • @RascalApiary
      @RascalApiary  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In the wild queens start at the top center and work their way down. So they are typically in the bottom end of the colony with the brood. However, langstroth style plays with their heads convincing them not to build down more because the stores above them are not full yet.
      If you're just starting and don't have pulled out frames. I wouldn't use an excluder until the super is 50% or more pulled out in wax. Then I'd add one. So if the queen runs out of room on the bottom she can't get up into the super.
      It's good to use one until you get some time in the bees and can see the honey boundary. Queens don't go past the honey boundary once established.
      Hope that helps!

    • @tallcedars2310
      @tallcedars2310 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@RascalApiary I see we have managed over the centuries to colonize bees in hives and make it work against their natural instincts, amazing really and kind of sad too I am trying to work with their instincts but that one seems to be out of the question in a langstroth hive.
      Good point about not using the excluder, will watch for the cells being built out before adding any supers, thank you!
      Will need to check what the honey boundary is tho, thats a new one on me.
      Cheers from the north where my bees are buzzing and there's willow pollen pants entering the hive like crazy, yeehaw, they made it through winter!

    Any types of wood that bees 🐝 's don't like? I ask because I have read that for example: poultry should not live in a cedar house because of there supper sense of...smell? Anyway I just want to know so that I can build boxes and they will be healthy happy and feel good love energy of gratitude. Bee totem came to me like some powerful medicine. Poultry jokes coyotehehe omg forget this is public so should correct that part about the poultry in the cedar house it's not about the super sense of smell necessarily but it is about their breathing that it's not good for them to breathe theater so I'm just wondering about the bees and can they have cedar obviously no chemicals that don't do that so it would be you know I mean can I use heat treated that mean he treated pine? what about Oak can I use Oakwood? Fur? Does anyone know how voice to text and my lack of punctuation skills make for the need of an editor Anyways!

    • @RascalApiary
      @RascalApiary  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cedar hive boxes are great for bee hives as they are a hard wood and naturally help repel moths that can damage the comb. The majority of manufactured hives are made of pine. We have built a few out of hickory that have held up very well, but they’re exceptionally heavy so wouldn’t recommend it. Hope this helps! Enjoy your build!
