Welcome to our Stromae Papaoutai reaction!!! This is our latest video reaction from our new music reaction channel Beer’s & Bars. Here we listen, react, and breakdown bars while enjoying some of our favorite beers. Today we extended our Euro Trip to France where we witnessed a powerful video performance and heartfelt message that concerns the "deadbeat dads" out there!! Although it was a great and interesting video it was also very emotional as well!! We definitely look forward to hearing more from this amazing artist as we continue on our Stromae Journey!!

love this song(btw it wasn't a mannequin it was stromae the whole time ) for his live shows he did the same thing he had people carrying him around and he was perfectly still and didn't blink until it was time to perform

I love the live one at an awards shower or something. They drive up in the car from the video and people get him out of the car, carrying him the whole way through the crowd. Fabulous and worth a second watch to see that live version. It's the one that's something like 5:30 minutes.
I found Stromae from the Pentatonix cover of this song - also well worth watching and a whole new rabbit hole tho go down. They did an amazing job with Lindsay Stirling
To give you a little more info on the origin of the song. Paul known as Stromae which is the word Maestro with the syllables reversed. His father was killed in the Rwandan Genocide, Paul was 9 when his Father died and his Mom trying to protect the family told the children he was staying Rwandan to work, so he grew thinking his Dad just didn’t care or was just absent, he found out the truth in his late teens.

It’s a really sad story but I get it. The one time I srsly disappointed my kid was when I hid her dad’s heroin addiction from her. I carefully regulated his visits, hid the OD’s & other stuff from her. I felt like she was to young to deal with it. But when it came to a head & couldn’t be hidden anymore she was incredibly angry with me for deceiving her. I apologized & told her I didn’t know to tell a nine yr old what was happening, but promised I’d never lie to her again. But I also wasn’t hiding her dad had been slaughtered in a genocide so it’s not exactly the same situation.

European music culture is so unbelievably rich its just usually listened to in the country of origin because of the language barrier but Stromae made it from Belgium out to mainstream.
As a Belgian I love Stromae. He's part Belgian/ part Rwandan and he never really knew his dad. Stromae is huge in Europe, combines influences from all over the world (African, Latin, oriental ,...) and mixes them with socially relevant lyrics and epic music videos. If you liked this one I highly recommend Formidable, Tous les mêmes, l'enfer or quand c'est. All these masterpieces come with unique videos and english subtitles

As a Dutchie; Stromae is one of the best living artists out there. Was super excited to hear he came back from his pause in music. I mean, sure....i wholeheartedly wish for him to succeed in fashion, but little selfish me wants him to stick to music 🙊😌
I believe he knew hias dad, but he went to work in Rwanda as a physician, and he ended killed in the genocide. For years nobody knew if the father was alive or not, and his mother always give him very little information.
The ending feels like he is gonna become like his dad is to his own Kids because it's a cycle of generations of no one stops it

It can be read this way but in this case his dad isn’t absent but dead, so he‘s joining him in death. Stromae has written about suicide quite a bit. Either way the ending always gives me shivers.

Stromae is a generational talent. Alors on Dans may have introduced him, sort of like Teen Spirit brought Nirvana to the masses, but his music is genius on a base level and when you really think about what the lyrics mean in French (some things are lost in the translation, but most aren't). The comparisons to Jacques Brel are so accurate on so many levels and it is no wonder that he cites Brel as one of his greatest influences.
Absolutely. Stromae’s voice timbre recalls Brel’s, but his delivery is more swingy. I like to think Brel would have admired him.

I'm so glad he recently rejoined the music scene after long time finding himself again... and he did. He is an absoluut musical genius and his concerts are of this world. Many big US stars were blown away by him concerts in the US before he took time off.
Kanye West took the stage once while Strom was playing this song, Will I Am, jimmy Fallon and Madonna called themselves fans at the time and that all was before his hiatus. Loving the Juice and Stromae content btw. Maybe his concert could be reacted to like you did with the westwood freestyles?!

I saw/heard Stromae in 2015 in Montreal and was bowled over. At the time he sang Papaoutai with more swing and urgency. I heard him again 2 months ago and while he was just as mesmerizing (amazing choreography, lighting and backdrop), his show had a more trance-like feel. In the intervening years he went through a lot of hard stuff (illness and depression) . Stromae is verlan (inverted language) for maestro. One of the most truly original talents to have emerged in this century.
I think the difference dances can also represent different types of relationship dynamics between father and son. Some are more fluid, joyful others more aggressive, strained. But regardless if it's a good relationship or a more toxic one it still makes the kid smile, thus bringing to life the lyrics of it being better to have some communication than absolutely nothing. Ultimately i think it is him coming to some kind of peace with his own childhood as well as showing that their is still love and happiness to be had despite the past.
The end could also show him coming back to life after essentially locking himself away in his own mind from what was missing as a child and growing up.
Yes definitely symbolism and interpretations - allows many to connect with their version of the song we think 🙏
I know a bit of french(been studying it from the 2nd grade).
When I first listened the song, it gave me such a happy and upbeat feel.
But after listening to the lyrics and remembering the few french words I could understand, I instantly knew it was an incredibly depressive song filled with sorrow and sadness.
Papaoutai gives the same feel as Nena's 99 Luftballons, a similar happy song that actually tells the story of the end of the world through nuclear warfare.

This song is in reference to children who’s fathers died in the Rwanda Genocide. The child dancing towards “the mannequin” aka Stromae is him growing up on his own and imitating the other children who have fathers. Them dancing together is him stepping into adulthood, and the lyrics say that he is biting his fingers waiting for him to come back because his mother has told him that he was traveling for work. He’s in Belgium and his father is in Africa but will not return because he is no longer alive. It doesn’t have anything to do with the father having another family although it is good interpretation based on the lyric “everybody knows how to make a baby but nobody knows how to make a father”, which is actually a reference of anger to his father which is why it is said right before he becomes an adult. He is a very creative artist and although most of his songs are just stories that he’s made up, they hold great quality and make you think. This entire album and also Multitude are very unique albums down to his lyrics and the actual beat and even the visuals.

Hello, I came across your video by chance. I am French and my English is not very good so I translated on Google.
The work of this artist has always moved me because it is heavy with deep messages, especially with Papaoutai.
Especially the part where they dance. I can't help but tell myself that a dance is only a way for the father (or mother for the girl duo) to educate his child. When the boy dances alone in front of his father's wax statue, I see it as a mix of dances (educations) that he was able to observe for himself by watching others.
Which, for me, could explain the rambling side of his dancing; for me it is not very structured and orderly so he dances anyhow (because he does not have the education made by the presence of his father who is supposed to serve as a model for him).
Especially since at the end, we see him dancing with his father (who I assume didn't have a father in his youth) and he and the boy finally have a sync. It makes me think that in the end, he will have followed in the footsteps of his absent father.
Interesting take, and we'll thought out! We love that that no matter your take or even a language barrier you can still get a basic understanding and enjoy his craft 👍🍻
STROMAE IS A GENIUS
I can see myself dance or cry listening this song depending of my mood. It is so beautifully sad but I the same time the beat is soo good!! My story is different to Stromae's one or the story he tells in this song, but I think a lot of people/children can relate to this.
I recommend to anyone to watch his full concert on TH-cam (the one he did in Québec). The visual is breathtaking and the songs are so nice because they are extended with parts that are incredibles and it an amazing experience, even behind a screen!

This song is amazing. His dad left, and I think the dad ended up dying in the Rwandan genocide or something? You can really hear the emotion in this song, almost a mixture of sadness and anger.

there is also one very very important sentence in the video, that can be easily missed. It is at the start. Where he says:

Such a sad song.. Very universal. Whenever I watch reactions of this, there are always people explaining Stromae's personal path. I think this is unnecessary. It is very relatable song to many.

Stromae is one of a talent, musically and lyric-wise. Even his alias Stromae = anagram of Maestro is genius, right? And his videos are next level. I recommend watching the videos of "Formidable", "Alors on danse", "Tose les mêmes", and "L'enfer"! Regards from Germany.
I'm a little late for this one but actually, reversing syllabes in words is a process called "verlan" and it's typical french slang. It's mostly used by rappers and young people but some verlan words became so popular that they're now used by pretty much everybody. I recommend you the skit of Paul Taylor called Le verlan c'est compliqué (French slang is complicated) which explains the process in a really fun way.

The singer's father went missing in a war during his early childhood. The singer subsequently fled to Belgium with his mother as a toddler. The song is a tribute to his father whom he never really knew. It is a processing song.

Stromae didn't fled anywhere, he was born in Belgium and lived there his whole life. His mother was flemmish belgian and his father had Tutsi roots from Rwanda, but still belgian.
His father was sadly killed during the Rwandan genocide in 1994 when he went there to visit his family.
