  • In December 2011 a three man team will set out in one of our Arctic Trucks built vehicles with the aim of beating the old Guinness World Record set in 2005 going from Patriot Hills to South Pole in under 3 days with an average speed of nearly 16km/h to mark the 100 years anniversary of the first successful attempt by Roald Amundsen.
    The challenge is to improve the current Guinness World Record, driving from Patriot Hills on the Antarctica coast to the South Pole, over 1100 km distance each way
    The vehicle used for this attempt is an AT44 built on Toyota Tacoma with a unique styling by Ian Nisbett Design.

    the reason these guys dont use bigger truck or bigger engine is because weight and fuel economy. when they are out there they must have the right combination of weight, fuel capacity, flotation on snow, and power. bigger heavier engine and truck will sink more and use more fuel. its not all about power and size. its about efficiency and overall ability

    If there is one thing Iceland is good at, it's building snow trucks. Does anyone know if they get their tires made in custom widths? I know that a lot of them get widened wheels to fit wider tires. What width do they usually go with?

    Serious question, why do they use a Toyota Tacoma 236HP 266Tq vs Nissan Frontiers 261HP 281Tq? is it due to the Power plants they use. Second question why do they use wheels as opposed to tank treads, which have a larger wide spread area to spread out weight? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

    • @jaytrock3217
      @jaytrock3217 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you really have to ask that question? Reliability. I bought a Tacoma after using them in Afghanistan. Nissan's requires higher grade of fuel to make those numbers. The Toyota can make higher number if you use a higher octane and change code. The 4runner with the same engine does it 270hp and 278tq.

    • @gullf1sk
      @gullf1sk 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      First question, reliability.
      Second question, again, reliability and weight. If the tracks break down, you are in trouble half-way to the south pole. Not much can go wrong with a tire except for a puncture.

      you wanna see a stock raptor... do what an incredibly modified tacoma will.....
      mod a raptor like this and it will be better. cant compare a highly modded truck a stock truck.
      you can however compare two stock trucks. Lets see a stock tacoma do what a stock raptor can do. Dumbass

    • @HeraldandGerald
      @HeraldandGerald 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      09FordFX4 They're two different classes of truck stock. The raptor was built for the sole purpose of offroading. Tacomas are more just......really reliable. I'd take my Tacoma over a Raptor any day. HOWEVER....if I had the opportunity to own a raptor, I definitely would. Both great trucks, but not in the same class.

    Anyone know why Dick Cepek Fun Country tires can’t be found in USA Today? I’m taking about these vintage 44 inch donut looking balloon type tires. These are the tires I grew up looking at in the late 80s. But I see them in Iceland on these Euro 4x4s. But they’re not in the USA no more? Anyone know how to purchase a set of four 44 inch DCs like these guys have?

    • @theproudicelander
      @theproudicelander 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cuz it gets heavier, you want light, as in a perfect mountain truck from my perspective is a CJ-8, renovated and lengthened about 30cm, "46-48 D44-60 and 500Hp, should be lighter than these if made with lightweight components, fiber hoods and fenders and no unnecessary equipment

    • @gullf1sk
      @gullf1sk 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      tracks are heavier and vastly more complicated than big tires. much more can go wrong with tracks, and you dont want that half way to the south pole.

    Then why is the Ford 150 the number one sold truck for over thirty years now? I don't understand why these guys aren't using Toyota V8 and the Nissan V8.V8 has more torque. Clearly you can see that these trucks are having a hard time spinning there tires in the snow. There's no substitute for cubic inches,V8.

    • @Torvikholm
      @Torvikholm 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      William Santiago The F150 is on sale only in ONE continent. It is the worlds most sold Pick up due to the US and no other country. If you travel out into the world you won't see many F150's. Why they used a Tacoma I don't know. The HiLux you can get with the same engines. But unlike the F150, the Tacoma is supported by Arctic Trucks though.
      Now, why they don't use a V8. Fuel Consumption. I don't know if you have noticed, but there isn't very many petrol stations on the south pole. That is the reason why every one else is using HiLuxes or Land Cruisers (Prados) with 3 Litre Diesel and not 4 liter V6.
      Also. size. the car needs to fit in a shipping container.
      And to add on insult, the Tundra frame is weak as hell, and would most certainly struggle at he poles. The Nissan Titan i don't know anything about.
      More torque is to a certain degree not necessary due to gearing. As I'm sure you know. you can multiply torque by lowering gearing. The engine did not struggle making the wheels spinn, but rather it's important that you spin the tires slowly. It has nothing to do with lack of power.
      I don't really agree with your "There's no substitute for cubic inches,V8." If the Tacoma had been fitted with a 18,4 Litre Scania V8. it would have more torque than the world. 3550 Nm to be exact. But then. How are you suppose to fit the engine? It's large as hell. There is no substitute for correct size. If that is a 3 litre diesel straight four or a 4 liter V6 petrol, then so be it. It is the correct size for the frame, the body and the drivetrain.
      It's not always best to go for more power and little else.
      See Top Gear Polar Special. That is done with a 3 liter 170 horse diesel.

    • @iceman5815
      @iceman5815 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ford f150 is only so u say #1 selling in the US not the world. If u talk about other continents the Toyota n Nissan are the best there is because of their reliability n durability second to none.

    • @Torvikholm
      @Torvikholm 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, the F150 is the most sold pick up in the world due to the US. Even tho´ it´s only sold in Northern America. It is selling so much in the US that the sales done in one country is enough to make it the worlds most sold pick up.
      The Toyota and Nissan might be reliable, but that has nothing to do with sales. They, or at least where I'm from, Toyota has built up a name. I´m sure the Isuzu D-Max is more reliable than the HiLux, but everyone still wants the HiLux. this is all down to marketing and culture. Pepsi may be better than Coca Cola, but I always go for Coca Cola.
      We might think that the F150 is bad, due to the fact that it is not set up for our markeds. It has large and powerful engines, a pitiful excuse a payload capasity and its big. Things that, in my case, Europeans might se as a bad thing, but is perfect for Northern America.
      And lastly, can you please write complete words? Foreigner are suppose to read what you are saying, it is hard to guess every second word.
