- This is big! Today is the first time I show you how to render a wall using a Silicone Rendering system. And I have to say that it's a bit of a game changer.
I used to use Silicone render in NZ when I was on my Working Visa. But this is the first time I've used it since returning to the UK - and I forgot how good it was.
Silicone render is a flexible, multipurpose render that can be used on a variety of different backgrounds. The reason we turned to this over Sand & Cement render is because the gable end of the building fell down - the builder decided to rebuild it in timber.
Now here's the truth.
Sand Cement is rubbish on a timber backed build and will only crack when the timbers twists and flex's. Which is why we decided to use A Baumit Silicone Rendering system. And I've filmed the whole process.
I'll walk you through the full process on how to render a wall using Silicone Render and outline the most important steps you need to follow for success. I'll also talk about the big differences between this and sand cement, reveal the biggest perks to using this system and even show you some handy tips for rendering in the winter.

Great little tutorial here .... I retired some years ago, never used the silicone render but my son uses it all the time ...... I can see why he likes it so much now :-) ...... Great to hear you say "Always close up the rendering" ..... It was always a beef of mine, that I'd take on spreads that would leave holes, dips etc everywhere ... It saves time at the end of the day, and helps leave a 'quality' job ...... Proper-Job .......

Most finishes on new builds use this system here in Australia. You could do this with one person for small area, need 2 people for larger areas for sure. Its just so messy to work with but has a great finish. Thanks for the vid Blaine always informative. 👍

Learned that trick as an apprentice in the 80's,you can also throw neat cement over the paper as well for even more moisture sucking power

Hi Blaine, when using newspapers to dry the render, run your float over the paper if the paper looks wet remove it and put another page on and so on. If you use the Sun newspaper the render will go off even quicker :) 🤭👍 Keep up the good work :)

Great video mate just a wee tip that u might or no find useful when bedding the mesh into the first coat we use a tiling trowel to bed it in then cover all the mesh and use a spatula to finish off and get rid of less trowel lines

Advice please. I tried silicone rend for the first time on a trial job at my bosses home just a few weeks ago. All the prep work went just as shown on this video but upon applying the final coat we struggled to apply the same methods as you have shown. Firstly we were asked to use 3mm aggregate and secondly it was becoming quite cold outdoors. So I applied as tight as possible as shown and my partner came behind taking off access, at this point the aggregate started to separate and the uneven shape of the aggregate started to cause friction lines. We found ourselves playing with the product to get it as it looked upon application and realised it was no drier than when applied much earlier and would not allow for floating without leaving lines or moving the aggregate around. We decided to leave it a while and go back to float up and found the weight of the aggregate and wetness of silicone combined had cause the aggregate to droop in place. We ma aged to sort this as the silicone had stiffened enough to hold the repaired patches and flatten the rest. Can you tell me if the temperature was the problem or the size and weight of aggregate or even a mixture of both or even like iv found with experience in other products, did we just panic when the aggregate started to move and could we have trusted the process? I do realise that a trial job held in winter does throw up more possibilities and I personally as a very experienced plasterer put it down to the 3mm aggregate obviously meaning the silicone is thicker which in turn slows the drying process mixed with the cold conditions caused a problem for inexperience. Can somebody with experience please give me a verdict and any advice for future reference

I have painted external sand/cement rendered retaining walls with paint always flaking off but no visible areas of dampness. Could this be my answer and if so will I have to take off the existing render??

Having just had 200m2 of render put on my house I can say that the monocouche (skia parex) finish is so much nicer than the thincoat I looked at. One is like worn pitted stone and the other like sand mixed in paint.
Is there a certain width for mesh when using on s&c so it takes it in?

I want to render the front of my house. I have pebble dash. Would you recommend stripping away the pebble dash, then use a fibreglass mesh and silicone render?

Thank you for watching my friend! I just used my standard plastering trowel and it worked fine...although someone mentioned using a Flexi. That could work well 👍
We've moved into a house with silicone render but don't like the colour, can you paint over it? Views seem to be a bit mixed on this issue as you have to have it cleaned first as mould and algae can cause issues with cracking/peeling etc. Some articles say masonry paint is fine and somewhere else they say use silicone paint?? The silicone surface is supposed to be breathable so this is probably an issue when painting it. I'd be grateful for any advice. Thanks.
Blaine great work but I noticed you didn't use a primer befor you top coated have you ever had they base leech through?
Can you scratch stonework with sand and cement and use this system over the top? If so what primer would you use if any on the sand and cement scratch? Do you let the base coat dry fully before top coat, been rendering and plastering for 15 years and never tried this, thanks in advance for any reply

i have a silly question, ny garage has old peddledash and i want to cover it with a smooth finish. I dont want to remove the layers, can i use one coat dash cover and than do silicone rendering for a smooth finish. I am unable to see any video on how to cover peddledash. BTW by following your courses, i have managed to fully plaster my kitchen ceiling to walls

Hello mate, have you ever used any secil tek lime based products? I recently used them, at the costumers request, and had a nightmare finishing them, not much help of the company that supply it either! Love the channel by the way, its boss! 😁
This a good gear blaine, here in the northwest we use alot of weatherby silicone render which is identical..
I used Weatherby when I lived in Manchester!! It was good stuff but I was very new to it back then so I didn't appreciate as much as I should have done. Thanks for the comment by the way...great hearing from you as always!

Hey blaine. I've seen your going over cementboard. The joints from the video seem like there tight and butted up. I've always done and made sure there's a gap so it doesn't cause pillowing when the timber expands or contracts??

I much prefer Sto to be honest…that’s the only company we used in NZ. Beautiful stuff that was!
Quick tip … lay it on with a flexi trowel it gets it on much thinner

Very good buddy. Ive never used it myself being a spead. But the Americans use it alot and fir what ive seen . They use a sponge float to rub it up. But its good to see to different methods

Great vid Blaine! The orange Refina trowel - is it just a plastic float or is it a scraper? Sounds like it’s scraping back but the float looks completely flat? I’ve not used silicone render before, I’ve only used sand/ cement. But whenever I’ve watched vids on silicone render they seem to scrape it back? Thanks for more great content 👌🏼
It's a float but it's just designed to be used on Silicone renders. I am pulling it back with one motion but floating it directly afterwards. You want the render to be applied very thin. Thanks for watching by the way...hope this helps pal

But I love baumit Starr contact. Kzp 65 is good basecoat also.
I also spray basecoat and topcoat render machine.

Do you not scratch this stuff up on your base coat for adhesion? Surely that rule prevails even through to silicone renders.

You don't need to insulate everything. You do need to meet it though. You can go straight over block...it's just choosing the right products. The reps are great though. Just ask them pal!

Desperate! Can this be applied in sections on one large wall or will you always see the joins? Have to remove a so called professionals job where a lot of cement render has blown. Thinking of removing the lot down to blocks and starting again
Great video as always, you’ve answered a lot of questions I had on k render. Only one question tho, k render tend to have a very textured background, is there any way it can be flattened as smooth as sand and cement?
This ain't k rend its a bit different process.
Most don't use k rend now
Hp12 can be rubbed up to a smooth finish with a diamond float and a sponge
What's best way to clean it Blaine day after or same day and what with as it can be a nightmare to clean

Top coat
Hi mate. That's K-Rend mate - you have to scrape it back the next day to get the texture. You float this product and you do it almost instantly. Hope this helps my friend 👌

Hello everyone. From where can i get silicon render?
Used this system on top of external insulation. All great until the final top coat. Went on an absolute dream, but after 24 hours it was still as wet as when it was applied. Had not gone off at all. 5 hours after that, a rain storm and most of 1600 quids worth of top coat was running down the walls and on to the floor. How long before your top coat was set?
Hi baumit has an accelerator.
Called speedtop. Brilliant stuff goes off in 4 to 5 hrs 1 tub just tip in topcoat.
Mate that's mad! This actually happened to Charlie (builder in the video). The exact same thing so we used Accelerator as Kai mentioned and it worked a charm. Sorry to hear about your experience though mate.... rendering in winter is evil!!
Just had the same experience even with accelerator in it (maybe I should have used two doses!). Temp dropped to 5c overnight and that seemed to stop it going off.
Was getting damaged when the rain came in the next morning so have had to tent it, and apply a propane heater to try and get it to go off!
That being said, easy product to use and I’m sure we wouldn’t have had the same issue had it been July and 30c! (Probably the other way around!)

Hi there, Blaine. You don't have to wait for it to pick up, do you? I think you can float it up straight away.
Hi pal. Not the top coat. You can float it almost instantly but the base coat needs time to cure - you won't float it otherwise. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

Not sure about this product on painted surfaces but I've just used Atlas system base coat KT55 with a primer applied first over a painted surface. Worked well

If your scraping the final coat off with your float then the bloke troweling on is putting on too thick. Easier to tell him to trowel it as thick as the grain. That also means when you are rubbing up with the final float, you should keep a damp sponge in your hand to constantly clean your float. Also break in the the finish with your float then go over again when it’s dried a bit to close off for a more uniform finish. Trust me when it’s hot if the final coat is too thick it will skin up.
Too true my friend. It was also a bit thicker than what I'm used too...I find it's a lot easier to spread when it has water in the mix. Really thin it out!

Hahah I'll tell him! I do if I'm expecting lower conditions but I'll be honest, it's best to avoid it all together. I don't risk rendering if the temperature is below 4degrees...the cement won't take. I think it's best to wait until it's a bit warmer my friend!

I'll be honest, I think the Sto systems are the best but I think they're a bit of a pain to get hold off. But for me they can't be beaten!
No scratch coat?
Not with this product mate. You don't need a scratch when you're applying the Silicone top coat 👍
Am having a wall k rended around the patio door. The builder has not used mesh over exisiting brick work and also hasnt used an undercoat. Is this ok?
Secondly when i run my fingers over the finish coat small sand particles end up coming off. Is this normal?
It doesn’t sound great to be honest mate! You definitely need mesh and there’s always 2 coats of K-rend. Admittedly though, you can apply 2 coats on the same day but it doesn’t sound great unfortunately

Is it brick or block? If its brick he should of undercoated and meshed but if its new block they can just apply krend top coat and as for rubbing off bits of dust this is totally normal as krend is designed for slower drying longer workable material and its that consistency which makes it workable for a good time after applied.

I tell ya one thing this material is unreal for breaking in trowels. Worked with a lad in America silicone rendering for a while and his trowels wer like razor blades. I said fucking hell man these trowels would be amazing for skimming. He goes what's skimming 😂

How long does it take to dry before painting?
Mix up some dry sand and cement and throw it on the newspaper, will float in a minute or two
