I wrote, voiced, and edited this guide before 1.0.1f came out, so some of the joker screenshots are slightly outdated --- the basic principles in the guide still apply, so don't let that throw you off!
For everyone listening to this video months after it comes out: This video is extremely outdated. Well, to be more specific, the part about forcing Supernova/Ride the Bus high card every time, and the part about Tarot/Standard packs being bad. These parts just aren't true anymore. This video was made for a version of the game that was far less balanced. You were basically forced into a certain build at high stakes. Now the game is significantly more open in terms of strategy I personally lean extremely heavily on Tarot and Standard packs, as I think they're extremely strong. And you should too! Regardless, you can listen to specific advice from this video, just don't take it as gospel.
Also, Spectral packs are godly if you get to make copies of kings or aces and go on with a planet pack every once in a while to boost the high rolling combos. Sure getting jokers is good and all, but when your hand by default is already x15 or something crazy like that, then you only need a single x2 joker and +100 blue points to get to late game easily. Maybe it's less consistent, sure, but the runs end up being more baller.
This whole video is "this is my strat and you should only do exactly as i do and not any other tactic". So many different play styles for this game, all are viable and situational. If you roll a certain joker early that relies on tarots go for that.
Im gonna preach my hatred for orange/ gold stake black deck on every balatro video i see until I beat it and finally move on on life. On day 2 of my grudge right now.
"I hate space joker and I don't think you should spend money on tarot cards and card packs" after finding this video after my first victory relying or strongly steel cards, the mime, and the space joker I give this a strong "OK..."
Ohhhh. Oh that makes so much more sense. The part of my brain that played autobattlers just straight up refused to touch reroll more than once or twice without Flash Card. “No, my money that I get 5 of every round minimum is way too valuable to spend on one reroll, anyway I really hope this Arcana pack bails me out somehow. Maybe if I’m lucky, I’ll open a Buffoon Pack and find something in there besides my reflection.”
balatro attracts autistic people like lamps attract moths... anyways, thank you, this was actually really helpful! I like how you went straight to the point, actually gives me something to work with.
I’m mad I didn’t realize this sooner. I played the demo for crying out loud. This is basically the perfect game for everybody born with the STEM autism that Rainman had (or you’re me, with my roguelike special interest). I have never seen more absurdly detailed breakdown infographics of a game than here. At no point in the entire time I played and talked about Binding of Isaac did I ever have to talk about aleph null for a laugh.
I guess an unpopular opinion but an early space joker is super solid. Don’t even really have to focus planets since your main hands will level automatically
Yeah, Space Joker in a vacuum is booty, but if you're likely to play only one type of hand, he can bank the equivalent value of many, MANY Planet cards over the course of a run. I won a Gold Stake run on Checkered Deck recently thanks to the Spaceman and Burglar... and without a single X Mult.
First off, you do a great job explaining. The video is well-structured and well-paced. Second off, BLESS YOU FOR PUTTING THE MUSIC SOURCE IN THE TIMESTAMPS!
I'm very impressed. This video is tight and information dense. I was worried with a title like that, that I'd be in for some clickbait, but I'm glad I gave it a shot and turned out to be wrong. Now I just need to adjust my play-style.
Great video! It's refreshing to see you make it clear that you placing winrate as a #1 priority is just a personal preference on how you have fun with the game, and make it clear that all playstyles and preferences are valid, and as far as maximizing win-rate goes, these tips are pretty much the best there is to win as consistently as possible.
Good video and appreciate your admittance of not caring about endless mode, especially since a lot of your advice is very bad if that's someone's goal, but it's great advice if you just want to win.
Oh. Well I think that explains why I consistently ate shit trying to force an Endless-viable build while also playing this general strategy but bad (not nearly enough mult mult)
I love space joker. Its really good when you play it with the oops all 6 joker. Basically, every second hand levels up the hand type, which is quite broken for a flush build
Yooo! After 4 failed runs on black deck searched on youtube for tips, followed your tips on the video, after a few runs of rerolls, finished the black deck run I think 8th or 9th attempt, got the achievement on speed run and win run on less than 12 hands, big game changer on not spending money on tarot packs and boosters and focus on finding jokers you need for your run, very helpful video 100% straight to point no BS and concise, thank you master!
I’ve literally been stuck on green stake for days for some reason, and after watching this video I beat it first try and then beat black stake on the second try right after. I was spending so much money on “synergy” jokers that only worked with the hands I wanted to play and booster packs and stuff before, now I have so much money I don’t know what to do with it. It feels great to not have to worry about what the boss is or what cards I draw because all of my scoring is in my jokers Edit: update, i just beat my first gold stake run! I had 7 hands per round from burglar and was eventually able to just one shot all of ante 8 from square joker, one holo joker + a ton of xMult cards. It’s like a whole different game
I remember one time where I had gotten an actually insane run, I was lucky enough to get Perkeo out of an Arcana pack which if you didn’t know, Perkeo creates a negative copy of a random consumable you have, then what happened was I got the Observatory vouchers which give x1.5 mult for every planet card you have towards the respected hand, then all I had to do was get a single Jupiter and soon enough I had 16 Jupiter that each gave x1.5 mult every time I played a flush, I soon lost the run to The Fish
this really helped! I wasnt at all aware of the different playstyles focusing on jokers vs consumables. nor that chip jokers actually help at all. thank you! I'm excited to see Balatro content (or other) from you in the future now :)
Insanely good video; high effort, fast to the point, straight forward, great personality and not a chore to listen to. Can't wait for update 1.0.1f and what kind of video you may make for that. Awesome job
Thank you so much for making this video. I’d been playing Balatro for over a month without a win. I watched this video, followed the strategy, and made it all the way to ante 10 the next day! I can’t begin to describe the rush of scoring over 110k with a pair of 2s when it happens for the first time! Thanks again!
I know you addressed this already in post, Autumn, but watching this video 5 months after the release of 1.0.1f feels like looking into a cursed time capsule. I forgot how bad pre-patch Orange and Gold Stake used to suck. Minus-1 hand size and packs costing a fortune made most elements of the game so unplayable that you had no choice but to build the EXACT kind of Joker setup you instructed and avoid consumables like the plague until you completed it. Changing the rules of the higher Stakes, as well as buffing non-Joker mechanics like Blue Seals and The Magician, was a really savvy move by LocalThunk that opened up so many more strats.
Good Vid but do not sleep on planet cards! If you upgrade hands even a little bit the chips can allow you to net even need chip jokers which can give you more slots to mult utility and econ jokers. Especially with strong hands the planets scale very fast.
while that's true, that does mean you run into consistency issues --- if you're unlucky enough to miss your 5-card hand in all your discards, you'll likely lose the run outright.
I started playing Balatro over Christmas and I am hooked and happy to say I finally won my first game last night. I must say this is one of the best strat videos I have ever watched, really breaks down a Joker focused run really nicely. Subbed!
Cheers for the video. Managed to get my first winning run. I had to use planet cards to upgrade my pair so I got more chips. This in combo with mult and X worked a treat.
the section from 11:41 to 12:06 is great! I'm actually here seeking instructional content because this was the playstyle that, with a little luck, took me all the way up to bashing my head against orange stake with the checkered deck for a while before realizing no this isn't gonna work I need to step back and rethink my life
My success rate went up massively when I started prioritising economy. Balatro is a game of luck but the more money you have, the more rerolls and the higher the probability of getting the cards you want. Really good video btw!
I have already spent 62 hours playing Balatro and I wanted to unlock rest of the decks while winning stakes on checkered deck. I was struggling on blue stake and I randomly found your video. I decided to try your methods and...I won it for the first time! Ante 8 had a Green Leaf (200,000 score) and I beat it in just one hand - 401,219. Thank you so much, man!
I really love this breakdown. I'm very much a consumables / numbers go brrrrrr type of player - but I found this to be really useful and I love the way you explain things and your pretty chill attitude. Subbed!
I just got my first run win last night and I'm completely addicted to this game. If I'm not playing it, I'm watching videos about it. I have it on both my phone and my Xbox, so I can literally play it whenever I want, which is a problem. Thank you for adding fuel to my forest fire.
I saw your video, opened balatro and played with the strat of the chip joker, +mult joker, and 3 x mult jokers and I immediately won 💀 I bet it was of course with a little bit of luck but it was insane how comprehensive this video was. Great content and great video ❤
Bought the game 3 days ago. Couldnt find a way to win, watched the first portion of your video and beat it on the first try; with double pairs i may add. Now continuing to watch the rest of the video. Thank you for the help!
I’ve been doing ok with the game but after using this play style I’ve been doing really well. I just beat green and black stake on the black deck and before I was really struggling. The extra joker slot but losing a hand isn’t actually on average that worth the trade off. It’s deck where u have to play well with and these tips really helped so cheers!
hey boss thanks. After getting my ass beat by purple stake for the past three days i listened to this advice and got myself through it. Friendship ended with flush gaming. Now pair is my new best friend.
when using this strategy i will literally just lose if I don't get the luck to have a good xmult joker in the shop, which is pretty much every run because my luck is terrible
People often claim that the strength of planets are their consistency, this is not true. The strength of planets comes from a form of flat scaling that isn't attached to a joker slot. If you have consistent blue seal value, even better. Although your take is completely valid, from my studying and near complete journey gold staking every deck, I see things in a different way. From my experience jokers are necessary no matter what, but the most important things to go for is a reliable method of gaining long term value from your hands. Things like gold cards, blue/purple seals, deck thining, suit fixing, and using any enhancement you get. Jokers are necessary and make the game easier, but all the jokers in the world can't win the game if you only get flops.
once i used space joker, and kept on getting two pairs, AND IT JUST KEPT ON LEVELLING IT UP. after a few rounds of two pairs it became stronger than straight flush
Dang, this was fantastically presented, and definitely not how I approached the game so far. I was leaning hard into planets, which I suppose I was eventually going to realize was not as worth it. I had the joker order concept down pat though, proud of myself for deducing that
omg - I'd put 28 hours into this game over the last few days but always failed around ante boss 6/7. First attempt after watching this video I finally won! Thanks so much, bro - a really solid game philosophy explained very clearly.
I got Balatro yesterday and beat a run on my 2nd try. The funny part is that is was all thanks to space joker constantly leveling up my 2 pairs to the point where I was barely able to beat the final blind.
Loved everything about this video. Concise yet thorough. The game is very lenient at base stakes but rapidly starts requiring a more disciplined approach.
roguelikes are, in the general case, about taking the tools you're given and converting them into advantages. while the ability to play a high card build is very powerful, you're missing good chances with this approach. linear scaling gets you most of the way through the game; a little Xmult is all you need to cap it off outside the unfair stakes. besides, even if this advice is still optimal for white stake (big balance patch makes me think probably not as much) I tried following it and lost runs because I wasn't paying attention lol. I think it would be better to present this as a particular playstyle that you're very good at rather than a playstyle that straightforwardly converts to W's
This was good. What's hilarious to me is that I do the opposite of everything you say and I'm still getting a decently high win rate. I think that's what makes this game so fun. Also on the endless mode, I think it's useful to use that to try to buy up everything possible in order to speed run early unlocks. It's how I got many of the vouchers. I knew that I was going to lose rather quickly but it was a chance to be able to grab those vouchers. Anyways, great video EX
Thanks for the video. It helped me unlock the first 10 decks and I won all 10 white chip difficulty. Would you say the same basic tips apply to the higher stakes. The less money from no small blind money is noticeable starting out. I just started last week when it was released on mobile.
The higher stakes are more RNG dependent imo. I've beat gold on a few decks and am going through the decks one by one to gold them all, and once you hit purple stake or so sometimes you just don't hit the hands/jokers you need in the early antes to keep the rounds/money coming to stick to this strategy (don't get me wrong, it's still a solid strategy and I tend to use it) Maybe the really good players can win the high stakes most of the time but sometimes you gotta tailor your run to the rolls you're getting
I have been playing pretty much since this game came out and only able to get to about ante 5/6. I watched this video last night, booted up Balatro and cruised through a win! Thanks! 👊
I was in the exact same situation of only ever getting to ante 5/6. After reading your comment, I decided to re-study the video, take notes, and follow the strategy closely and I also just won my first run using it. Thanks for posting.
Good video, I agree that which jokers to buy and keep are easily the most important decisions you make in balatro. That said I think some planets are worth picking up though, like Venus, Mars, Saturn and maybe Jupiter all give decent boosts for hands that at the same time aren't too difficult to make. But I guess if you mostly focus on high card, yeah Pluto is kinda trash unless you are already swimming in money :D
Whilst this is a cool video, it seems to assume you've unlocked all the jokers. I've still not done this, and whilst there is an unlock all, that disables achievements for your profile. I also do not know if the "unlocl all" feature is even supported by the black hole accessibility mod which lets screen readers interface with Balatro so that I, a blind person, can play the game.
This video helped me get my first win when I stumbled onto Constellation, Baseball Card, Flash card, and Castle in a run as well as get an Overstock voucher. In that situation, I was able to follow the advice pretty well. But I find it fairly rare that I actually even see *any* X Mult cards in a run, let alone *three* of them. For that reason, I really question this advice still being relevant. It seems like maybe the earlier version of the game it was based on provided more X Mult cards? When I reroll, I usually see a bunch of tarot, planet, +Mult, and chip cards, not X Mult cards.
Good video! And I would wager to bet you’re doing this because you live in an atomized society and any excuse to socialize with strangers while also having fun is worth it because that is literally what life is all about But hey that’s just me
I agree with this advice for white stake. To win all decks at gold you will need to have an expert understanding of mechanics that go beyond jokers however (e.g. deck manipulation). But this is a good way to get a baseline you can experiment off of. I will just mention that the latest patch created a couple imbalances - namely the Saturn planet card and the Mail In Rebate economy joker. You can leverage these often.
The thing about spending money on rerolls and fishing for multiplier jokers makes me wonder if they make up the majority of the jokers I haven't unlocked yet. I rarely see any in the shop and the ones I see are often not great to work with, like the x4 four-in-a-row one. EDIT: Yeah, ouch. Of the 23 I'm still missing, about half are multipliers.
I only watched a 3rd of the video and instantly won with the black deck with the info i got. Prolly got lucky but still. Powerful info. I have won before, but i feel like now the wins are gonna be more consistent.
I k ow you don’t care about endless mode, but I think a good way to look at it is having fun how far u can push a run. Even if u don’t have mine, baron, blueprint and steel red seal kings, I love the challenge of just squeezing every piece of value from a rum. Play to win, then play for fun is the way I do it.

omg - I'd put 28 hours into this game over the last few days but always failed around ante boss 6/7. First attempt after watching this video I finally won! Thanks so much, bro - a really solid game philosophy explained very clearly.
This is so helpful, finally done my Frustrating Black Deck with this formula. Thank You
I got Balatro yesterday and beat a run on my 2nd try. The funny part is that is was all thanks to space joker constantly leveling up my 2 pairs to the point where I was barely able to beat the final blind.
Loved everything about this video. Concise yet thorough. The game is very lenient at base stakes but rapidly starts requiring a more disciplined approach.
I would really love some unscripted videos where you play through runs and maybe explain the logic/reasoning behind what you do!
i do balatro livestreams occasionally! will do more soon :)
This is an incredible guide; very well thought-out and easy to understand. Thank you for your help!
Thank you so much! This is the best balatro advice video i've watched so far!
Literally watched this video and won with no struggle! Excellent breakdown 👍
I finally beat orange stake while watching this video. A week and half of pain. Thanks!
I just won immediately after watching this video. First win on the first try. No joke, great video, big thumbs up.
Thank you for the get as much as money tip, won my first 8/8 ante today because of that, got really good joker with the rerolls
That random Yard Jingle midway through was really cool
roguelikes are, in the general case, about taking the tools you're given and converting them into advantages. while the ability to play a high card build is very powerful, you're missing good chances with this approach. linear scaling gets you most of the way through the game; a little Xmult is all you need to cap it off outside the unfair stakes. besides, even if this advice is still optimal for white stake (big balance patch makes me think probably not as much) I tried following it and lost runs because I wasn't paying attention lol.
Anyways, great video EX
i can never find a scaling joker early enough for this strategy to work
Thanks for the video.
Putting the yard theme song in as one of the background musics immediately earned my sub!
My favorite Balatro vid I've watched since getting the game, well done! This game has made me forget how much I 'hate math' lol.
great video ive become imprisoned by my autistic lock on balatro recently and this is fantastic
@ElGalloUltimo Gratz!!! We are unstoppable now!
Literally watched only half of this video and got my second win ever. Thank you so much!
This is the most helpful video on Balatro that I’ve seen by far
I was struggling on ante 5 but after this video I won my first run thanks for the help!
I tried to win for a couple of days without success. tried your method first try I won. ty
I JUST CAME FROM A FISH HAND WORTH THE AMOUNT SHOWN IN THE INTRO LOL
NICE
clicked for the balatro tips, subbed for the disco elysium music
i knew I'd get someone
Note on Boss Blinds: The Flint is just a worse wall, because it's basically a 4x instead of a 2x goal.
The programmer designing tarot and astrology to be completely worthless is such neuro-spicy STEM shade and I'm here for it.
3 seconds in and I feel called out lol.
The fish gets me everytime
thanks for the insights. It's getting difficult to keep up w/ my sons mad card skillz
Very surprised this doesn't have more views, very well-made tbh
right??
Won my first run watching your video after countless times of trying to win on my own. Thanks for the help
The slay the spire music in the background is too funny!
See I been playing a lot I love it when I see red legendary joker early and never have to worry about boss a issues
Good video!
And I would wager to bet you’re doing this because you live in an atomized society and any excuse to socialize with strangers while also having fun is worth it because that is literally what life is all about
But hey that’s just me
that's probably close
"But Autumn", yeah I read your post on reddit. W to this absolute legend.
Hmm strange space guy with increased odds is great, maybe not until the end, but helps a lot to boost up the hands values from the beginning for free.
Welcome back!
I began to miss your videos :D
Just tried this and finally beat the game with the black deck, might be my favorite now
This is the perfect ADHD content for me.
He reads so fast put speed to x2 and still was able to follow lol
I agree with this advice for white stake. To win all decks at gold you will need to have an expert understanding of mechanics that go beyond jokers however (e.g. deck manipulation). But this is a good way to get a baseline you can experiment off of.
I will just mention that the latest patch created a couple imbalances - namely the Saturn planet card and the Mail In Rebate economy joker. You can leverage these often.
Thanks! Endless mode has my interest, but getting there consistently would be nice
Great video! Definitely wasn't how I was playing and of course I have won both games I've played since watching this.
Be like me and get 3 xmult and 0 +mult jokers
The thing about spending money on rerolls and fishing for multiplier jokers makes me wonder if they make up the majority of the jokers I haven't unlocked yet. I rarely see any in the shop and the ones I see are often not great to work with, like the x4 four-in-a-row one.
EDIT: Yeah, ouch. Of the 23 I'm still missing, about half are multipliers.
You can't just throw Whirling in Rags on. That's like an emotional sucker punch lol
this video did sm to the game, won the first game i played after watching it. 10/10
