    I just got some of that fineline masking fluid too. Now I am totally inspired and excited to try it out. I'll try turning it paper the other way when I crumple it like you suggest. I love the way the paint soaked into the cracks of the paper too. The whole piece is beautiful and inspiring...like I said :c) Thanks for sharing.

    Thank you for sharing this lovely technique. It was a shame about the masking fluid sticking but you rescued your work beautifully. I wonder if you had crinkled the paper before applying the masking fluid, whether the small design you wanted at first would have stayed on while you painted over it. Just a thought as I watched. I really like this.

    Love your Demo and batik effect. Done some on Rice paper which had to be reinforced on backing. Will try your
    process. Thanks for the adventure

    I actually love the fact that some of the resist came off (sorry) but the imperfections add visual interest to me and I probably like it better than the one you did in orange. It's beautiful.

      Sherri Kent thank you I’m glad you like it. I do like the added texture the crumpling gave it.

    Hi Shelley, like you, I have been trying all kinds of batiks using masking fluid and the fineliner. My biggest issues are clogging pens and the paper tearing from probably leaving the masking fluid on too long, because I leave it on overnight and do lots of layers of painting and use way too much of the masking. I have upgraded my paper to a more expensive paper to see if that will help and I will try not to use so much masking fluid. I'm not as accomplished as a painter as you are, and am afraid to paint loosely and just let myself go, but I am loving it. There's another technique where you can get the crumpled look by soaking your paper in Elmer's glue and water then crumpling it up and laying it down flat on another piece of watercolor paper and then painting quickly on it before it dries. No masking needed. I think the glue to water ratio is like 1:3 or something like that. Give THAT a try. I just ordered a gallon of Elmer's. I'm having a ball and actually SOLD my first few paintings. I am NOT an artist, either.

      Kandice Heller I still tear some of the paper on about every project. It's just small enough you don't see it. I will have to try the Elmer's glue and water. Congrats in selling some pieces that great

    LOL...well, I was looking for this one. And wondered if you would try to Crinkle the canvas! Which is typical look for batik. Now that I see you did this... You got me thinking? How about plastic Wrap - it would give it a 'crinkled look' without destroying the paper. (not wax paper) I'm with you on experimenting - I like batik, and it could do well on watercolor.
    Another thought...Crinkle the Watercolor Paper - before you add the resist??? Then Stretch it out - because the wrinkles won't be perfectly flat, but you won't destroy your Resist work??? hmmmm, got me thinking before I even finished watching the video! Juliana
    PS - AWESOME JOB, by the way... I may work on this today!

      Juliana Leo I've done the plastic wrap technique for a background. But you got me thinking. I have a couple of ideas already. Thank you

    Hello, Could you tell me what paper (porosity and weight) you use for your “Watercolor Batik Girl In Purple”? It must be porous enough to be suitable for watercolor and fine enough for crumpling... Thank you !

      It has been a long time since I did this project but I’m pretty sure it was Carson Cold press watercolor paper maybe 140 lb. Because that is my usual. Thinner would probably be better.

    I'm really feeling greatful to watch that brilliant idea of making... thank you... but I've a question.... which paper sheet will work good? And if I put liquid wax on it, how will I remove

    • @TheShelleyStudio
      @TheShelleyStudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your welcome. The only time I have done and actual wax resist was with fabric. We used white muslin and once we were done adding the colors we layered the piece between sheets of newspaper and used a hot iron to lift the wax. We had to repeat the process frequently and the wax never goes away completely after we got as much wax off as we could we sent them to a dry cleaning place and they removed the rest. I’m not sure what paper would be best to try wax with maybe a heavier one? And you could lift with newspaper and an iron. Just remember don’t use that iron on your clothes after that.

    3 years later - you could wrinkle it BEFORE putting the resist on. The paper will be "damaged" for the watercolor to get in the cracks, but not enough to mess the resist.
