BALLYBURN back in business at Leopardstown

- Ballyburn bounced back from an emphatic Christmas reverse at the hands of Sir Gino with a determined victory in the Ladbrokes Novice Chase at Leopardstown.
A triple Grade One-winning novice hurdler last season, Ballyburn made a fine start to his career over fences at Punchestown in November but was no match for a rampant Sir Gino in the Wayward Lad Novices’ Chase at Kempton over the festive period.
Stepping back up in trip, Ballyburn was the 8-13 favourite to land a Grade One contest his trainer Willie Mullins has farmed in recent years, with Faugheen (2020), Galopin Des Champs (2022) and last year’s victor Fact To File among those on the roll of honour.
Having sat in the slipstream of pacesetting stablemate Champ Kiely for much of the two-mile-five-furlong contest, Ballyburn took over after jumping the second fence from home and looked set to win decisively after cruising round the home turn in front.
But Croke Park - an 11-1 shot despite being a dual Grade One winner over fences already - kept the market leader honest all the way up the straight before Paul Townend’s mount found more on the run-in to pull five lengths clear. Impaire Et Passe was a further five and a half lengths behind in third.
Coral make Ballyburn their 2-1 favourite (from 11-4) to successfully step up to three miles in the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase at next month’s Cheltenham Festival.
Mullins said: “I never lost faith, Kempton was just a bit sharp for him and I suppose Kempton lit him up as well, so he was fairly lit today with Paul.
“I think he eventually got him settled and he was afraid to move on him then in case he took off again, so he didn’t do any racing until after the last and he did what he usually does - he just quickened up from the last home.
“He looks a decent horse and I loved what he did from the last to the line. Once Paul got to ask him, he flew.
“He’s bred to get three miles and it’s fascinating he was able to do what he did over two miles and everyone had him down as a two-miler, but looking at his page you’d have to think he wants a trip.
“I thought his jumping improved today, going that pace today over that trip it was going to be easier for him.”

Can’t get too excited about that race.
I find him a boring horse to watch
This fella is an absolute champion. To get as close he did to Gino over 2m was proof of his class. Only issue i see is that they clearly don't fancy him much over the 3m+, at least for now...
always been an overrated donkey never beat anything
Hard to tell his jumping with head on angles, but when it showed them from the side, he got out jumped at every fence
Contrary to what most people think I would be pretty sure that over 2 miles on soft to heavy and over a stiff galloping course then Ballyburn would beat most horses around except the very best. He is very stamina laden and its his real strength. Croke Park landed first over the last fence and yet he put 5 lengths between him and the runner up by the finishing line. When this horse goes over 3 miles his superiority will be even more evident. Also they didn't hang about which is always good to see in these championship races.
We all know who was on before his foaling, for this exact race, on this exact date in 1998 don’t we?
He was the one who named the horse im hearing 😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂
Pretty sure he was on the double green monster, conquerer of Constitution Hill and who Stateman will never ever ever finish in front of in a race.
He was probably there giving the stallion a helping 'hand' too 🤔
@@musicmike1972 Martin "The Fluffer"Lewis 😂
Looks the one to beat in the National Hunt chase!!!
😂
In racing style , he’s the spitting image of GDC .
No better man to get a horse to have it in the last few hundred yards .. Genius
I've gained alot more respect for paul this year but sean bowens the best
Looks the business, cautious in places but still learning the job and the runner up is a decent prospect as well. Could be a semi deep race this
Mullins doesn't normally cock up but he did running him at 2 miles absouloute 3miler and a very good one gold cup horse for nxt year without dout . Look at distance put between him and second who's a strong stayer and 2 grade ones very impressive loads of stamina there
Why is people complaining about this horse jumping it doesn't look that bad to me
Thought he was slow at fences, 3 mile for this lad
Much better today, and he should be hard to beat in a very weak looking Brown Advisory. The extra distance shouldn't be an issue. He is proven at Cheltenham, and Dancing City isn't. You have to laugh at those now talking him up as stayer who not so long ago advocating him going two miles. Nobody in the media called Mullins out at the time.
He's always looked a stayer to me! A gold cup horse for sure and with the easier national fences they jump nowadays, I can see him winning a few of them!

Looks like 3 miles is what he needs
He is sticky over fences, he doesn't land them well and get away from them quickly!
hurdle?
