Hi, I'm a retired hairstylist from back in 1969 & when the shag haircut first came in. I was taught to razor cut & I didn't like the shag at first, but it grew on me. I love it now & taught myself how to cut with the scissors & I used the razor some like you did. I did hairstyling for about 12yrs at JC Pennys! It was fun. I miss it some. My health won't let me anymore at 73yrs. But I did love to cut hair, & I did cut my hair myself. You did a great job teaching us how to cut this haircut, very precise, & slow, you did it like I would do it. Thanks for sharing! 💇♀️💺☺️❤️🎉
My sister just cut my hair last night and I had her follow this tutorial. It came out so well and I'm so happy with it! Thank you for the excellent tutorial!
Ha ha. Yeah, the clients called it "feathered" because as the blown-out layers fell back they looked like feathers. But "feathering" is not really a technical haircutting term. Still...we old-timers know what you mean, and rock the hell out of this cut. It can be as short or long as you want and it's a cute vibe in any length.
Yessss... nothing better than 80's layers & big hair. That look should've NEVER been out of style. Singers Taylor Dayne, Stevie Nicks & actress Heather Locklear all rocked that look very well..
This haircut is classic. You can make it as BIG or laid back as you want. I blow this out with a smaller round brush, twisting and stretching and alternating directions with my subsections, and it gives a beachy, modern vibe and all those kicks and flicks really pop.
Super excited! This is my regular style for 20 years. And then, I became very low maintenance, just let it grow until all 1 length and touch my hip line length of hair! Seeing this video, I want this style now at 60 years of age! TY!
Same way I've cut layers for 31 yrs..only I would really over direct the length in back over the top to save length and avoid the V. I use razor and shears. Love to finish with a dry point cut to avoid any lines. Which creates invisible layers. Over directing the length creates the same look only keeping length. I've been a educator as well. This is the standard that is a true layer cut. Tried and true cut. This goes all the way back to Pivot Point education. The degrees make all the difference in your finished results, and of course finessing the cut with texturing. Great job luv did exactly as I thought my students.
Had this style in high school in the 80s. I would also get a perm that helped make styling time much shorter and made for even bigger hair 😄 I've always loved the shaggy bed head cut/ look.
@@StylesBySummer Go for it! The scariest think about it perm is the smell of the solution 😂 Seriously though you should try one at least once, I think you'd look fabulous! I'm sure you know this since you are in that line of work but just make sure to use the right size rods, making sure to stay away from the smallest unless of course you're wanting a big, bouncy, and fluffy afro! 😂😂 Body perms are great for a first timer. Good luck and hope you share before and after pics with us.
Except people highlight so much more, now, and it would be FRIED. It's perm OR bleach, really. Not both. I definitely remember the perm years. I still love doing them, though. They're fun.
Nothing new under the sun. The only difference is the products we have now and how we finish it. It would be full FARRAH if hot rollers were used. Only three shapes in hair design. So, haircuts are just mixed-up techniques. The reason I razor cut is I can create the shape AND texture as I go, and don't end up having to do a second cut with all the texturizing.
So happy I can be helpful! I'm 16yrs in and never thought in my life I'd be doing a channel like this. Thank you for watching and enjoying what I post. Means the world ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
My boyfriend has really long hair and we both are really into the 80s shag, so we just cut each others hair usually ( as we both know each others exact likings lol). It was nice to see that even without any clue I’ve been doing it the way you show it here! Still I learned a lot here when it comes to sectioning and technique. Thank you
The reason I love that haircut is I have curly hair and I can blow dry the top and let the rest dry naturally or I can dry it all and style it. S😅 I like that it looks good for a natural dry 😅r styling. You do a great job. I like the money piece too!!
This is exactly the cut I want! (Maybe because I lived in the shag era) Maybe if I show this photo to my stylist she can duplicate it. Your highlights made the cut have more dimension. Fun video! Love how precise you are before, during and after the cut! A pro all the way! 🙌🏻
They just need to over-direct the hair behind the ear, and forward more, to preserve length. A true mullet has two distinctively disconnected lengths but also has the shorter in the front, and longer in the back vibe. This is a true shag shape, though.
I'm in master Barber of 34 but occasionally I love to do women's hair and this is nice that you do these because it is like a little refresher reminder😊
Summer I love this cut, and I use a razor often. However I think this cut needs a smoother cut with scissors, and then “shag it up “ with a razor just like you did, especially if the clients hair is already a bit rough. The layers should lay pretty, and then textured. You are a good teacher because your instructions are very clear and visible! Thank you, Darcy
The "V" Shape in the back is the most hated part of this cut. Speaking from girls everywhere in the 80's. It took 15 years to grow back out, especially if, like most of us, you have long hair!! The way to avoid this is sectioning off the back and cutting it separately, and just very long layers in the back (layers within 2 inches of the back only) which my stylist just did for me, and it looks fantastic!
I loved cutting with both. My favorite razor was PM the twist. There are many different types of razors. Just like scissors. 8 times out of 10 I used scissors to cut and razored the ends.
I had this style in the early 80’s. Looked great at the hair studio, but I have a strong cowlick on one side that curled my hair into my eyes. So, I went for long and straight after that. No one ever seems to talk about cowlicks, and so many people have them.
I actually fixed a cowlick on the front of my head by using those clip Barrett's she uses to hold the hair. I'd put it in my hair at night after the shower, pulling the hair in the opposite direction and sleep with it like that. It took about 6 1\2 months but it worked.
Oh my gosh, this is sooooo CUTE!!! This is the first video of yours I’ve ever seen and I subscribed to your channel as soon as it was over. I’ve been a hairdresser for 25 years and I’m still always looking for new fun things and I love the way you demonstrate. You make it so clear and concise. I’m so impressed!!
YES! THANK YOU, Summer for doing this cut! Just followed your"LONG HAIR | CURTAIN BANG TUTORIAL | LAYERS | FACE FRAMING | HOW TO" video last week on myself. This is my next step 🥰😍 BTW, my fine hair clients are loving the Moroccan Oil products you reviewed!
Hi summer I resently had my hair cut I had it really short which I love it was awsome the hair dresser was great she listened to my concerns on what I wanted done
This is helpful as you talk about using both razor and scissors. I cut my own thick, fine, straight, heavy hair and just tried the shag using just the razor but feel it also needs scissors. Will try again, adding more texture. Otherwise my hair is like a hot, heavy rug! Will save and rewatch. Thank you!
I love to do combo razor and shear! But I do love razor cuts! They are softer! I'm 70 years old and retired! I did hair for 25 years and loved it! You do a fantastic job of explaining and demonstrating!❤❤
Great haircut.... my hair has become very thin on top and sides . My hair is fine, straight, and colored. I like big hair. What's the name of the product and brand for lift and blow out? Oh, I am 73 years old and not in the Best of heath.
Great job. I love using all the cutting tools. I usually start out with shears then all depending on hair texture I'll use texterizing shears and razor.thank you for sharing ❤😊
I have worn a shag all my life from really short to a long shag I like ur shag i would shorten the bags a tade oh and I use my razor so much love it good job !
I love this cut! I was a teen in the 80’s so am very familiar with it. I am looking for a new style for my long one length hair, so I might go for it. Will this cut work if you have wavy almost curly hair? The only thing that wasn’t my favorite was the long piece in the back. I understand it goes with the cut though. Great job! I love watching your haircut videos.
Love the way it lays,,I needed you about a week ago when I had my hair cut,,It was long now way shorter,,I ask for a long shag, layered hair cut ,YOU ARE AWESOME ,THANKS😁👍👍👍😇
I don't cut hair. I have very thick. I love this cut . I always had my hair with layer with V angle in back. Put hot rollers. Today it's so hard to find great hair dresser. I'm in New Jersey. I miss Elizabeth Arden in King of Prussia in PA . Steve was excellent hair dresser. Your are amazing teacher. Great job!!
My best suggestion is to just ask someone whose haircut you really like, even strangers appreciate compliments and are usually happy to share recommendations. Then book a consultation first and bring this video with you to discuss what you like and what will and won’t work for YOUR hair. If a stylist isn’t willing to do this chances are they’re not going to be the right stylist for you!
My first shag was in the latter 1970s. My mom had it done. Later I started cutting my own hair. That turned into cutting my family and friends hair. I did the shag cut quite differently. I wish I could load a photo from back when I started.
Artists have their preferences, Precision Cut is mine.. I have allot of fine Hair, Im 59 & grew up during the popularized Charleys Angels Hair Styles, & Bedhead Goldie Hawn so Ive worn those same long styles myself & Cut many others this Style here 😆 its fun how Styles Repeat My Father was a Classic Barber & I learned to Cut watching him & later Cosmetology School. It's been my experience whenever Stylist use Razors on My Hair, or Ive used Razors & Chipping Ends as opposed to Scissors causes Tangles. A good Haicut takes patience, I found gathering smaller sections of Hair & Cutting flush across prevents tangling, the Hair flows & blends better, other wise the Hair Ends become too random in length & undefined causing Hair to Tangle & cause Split Ends from frustrating comb outs; (2nd Cut becomes more of a Correction than anything). I do see why the Razor & Sliding has its good uses if on the right Hair Type & used proficiently, however I feel in general Sharp Scizzors & patience is thee Key to a great Cut;
Hi it's Susan from Ontario Canada love love that cut an have wanted it forever the trick is finding some1 who can do the cut proper. Thanks for sharing.
I came to see if one of my favorite TH-cam stylists did this cut any differently than me and it seems we are very similar in how we do this cut, although I rely a little heavier on my razor because it helps to soften everything a bit more than my shears. If anyone is in the KC area and wants this cut, feel free to reach out! 13 years experience and love doing these cuts. I'm so glad they're back in style!
As a stylist I want to do this cut on a client now! I've been doing it a little differently than you do it and I like yours better, except I'm not big on the mullet type shag in general. But a little bit of overdirection and it won't look at all mullety. This actually doesn't look too mullety to me, but I have like very strong feelings toward the mullet cut for some reason and don't like cuts that look at all mullety 😂 Anyway, this is gorgeous, you're gorgeous and I appreciate all your videos! You gave me so much knowledge and confidence to get through beauty school and I'm now in a salon and still watching your videos for inspiration ❤
I prefer cutting with a razor but not every cut warrants it. I usually do all my shags with a razor to creat the wispy texture and blend. Love this cut thank you! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
This is funny how I came across this video.. I am about do my first shag for a wig client of mind on curly texture. This was helpful. I’m not a cosmetologist but this was very thorough and gives me a good place to start
I love this haircut. No one has ever been able to do this haircut for me. I have medium course hair and lots of it and it always looks choppy when I get it cut. Do you have any advice for me to give to my hairdresser? Thank you for your videos they are awesome.
I like using my shears. Love the cut & having lots of layers. I don’t like the v-cut, the sides being shorter (not a fan of the mullet like look ) & I don’t like how it leaves the ends looking scraggly for myself since I have thinner hair. Thanks for sharing so cute!
My hair is super long... like to my butt long, I am so over it! I highlight my own hair & have just trimmed the very ends myself. I want something like this but just in longer lengths. looks amazing!
Thank you so much!!!! When you styled it and turned her to the side, it was like looking at myself in 1984!! The only difference as to how my mom cut my hair, was my hair was much longer, down to the middle of my back. She would round the whole thing in back, and my bangs and top were much shorter, ( my bangs were always cut right under my brow),and the angle from my bangs to the bottom of my hair was very steep. The angle was not straight down, still had plenty of angle, but was not angled back as much as you did it, which of course shortens the length. When you said that you wished more clients would ask for this haircut, I was shouting “ME, ME!!” I want this haircut so very bad again, and I’ve allowed two people here in Texas to attempt it, and they just don’t get it!! I wind up with inches gone off my length, and the angle in front is wrong , all around, I just wind up with much shorter hair, and I cry for days, vowing I’ll never do it again. My hair has grown so slowly all of my life (except the top).. so it takes a couple of years for it to get the length back that I had. Anyway, I would blow dry the whole thing, with a half round brush, and by the time I was done, it was perfectly flipped back, and sleek, shiny and full of bounce. Then if I wanted extra lift and height, the curling iron came out!.. lol. How I wish you could cut my hair. I would absolutely trust you to do it!!😊. Thanks again for doing this video, and if I ever find someone at all around here, that I might trust to do it, your video will be the first thing they see!❤
Too bad you are not in Montreal Ive been looking for this look for ever seeing is beleiving you are awsome God bless you if you are ever here i would love to know in advance have a great night!!!!
I cut my own hair into a shag and I have NEVER had so many compliments about it.
I love shags, always have. I wish I still had a lot of hair. Mine’s too fine now.😢
Do you have to style it for it to look good?

I'm 57 yrs old and rocked this cut back in the early 1980s. Back when I had beautiful thick hair.
My sister just cut my hair last night and I had her follow this tutorial. It came out so well and I'm so happy with it! Thank you for the excellent tutorial!
Your teaching methods are so easy to follow 😊
Back in the 80's my Grandmother took me to a Salon and I asked for my hair to be Feathered and Layered. That's what this cut reminds me of.
I think they called it layering back then
I like the razor cut better but some shear cutting is fine too. 😊
Ha ha. Yeah, the clients called it "feathered" because as the blown-out layers fell back they looked like feathers. But "feathering" is not really a technical haircutting term. I still have a a layered, bed head look. I went and got a body wave back in June. I love it!

Artists have their preferences, Precision Cut is mine.. I have allot of fine Hair, Im 59 & grew up during the popularized Charleys Angels Hair Styles, & Bedhead Goldie Hawn so Ive worn those same long styles myself & Cut many others this Style here 😆 its fun how Styles Repeat
My Father was a Classic Barber & I learned to Cut watching him & later Cosmetology School. It's been my experience whenever Stylist use Razors on My Hair, or Ive used Razors & Chipping Ends as opposed to Scissors causes Tangles.
A good Haicut takes patience, I found gathering smaller sections of Hair & Cutting flush across prevents tangling, the Hair flows & blends better, other wise the Hair Ends become too random in length & undefined causing Hair to Tangle & cause Split Ends from frustrating comb outs;
(2nd Cut becomes more of a Correction than anything).
I do see why the Razor & Sliding has its good uses if on the right Hair Type & used proficiently, however I feel in general Sharp Scizzors & patience is thee Key to a great Cut;
Hi it's Susan from Ontario Canada love love that cut an have wanted it forever the trick is finding some1 who can do the cut proper. Thanks for sharing.
OMG.. Summer, you're the best! Yet another amazing video..
😁😁
This haircut looks good on everyone!
So awesome!!! Thanks for watching ❤️❤️
Please!!!!
@@StylesBySummer where can I find you and what do you charge?
@@Vjbc_in_KC_opinionated_grandma I'm in Independence! I charge 45 for a cut and style! Lmk if you're interested 🙂
As a stylist I want to do this cut on a client now! I've been doing it a little differently than you do it and I like yours better, except I'm not big on the mullet type shag in general. But a little bit of overdirection and it won't look at all mullety. This actually doesn't look too mullety to me, but I have like very strong feelings toward the mullet cut for some reason and don't like cuts that look at all mullety 😂
Anyway, this is gorgeous, you're gorgeous and I appreciate all your videos!
Razor is always needed in a shag I feel!
Beautiful cut! I have always loved this cut.and am going to share your video for instruction! Thank you!!!
Awesome! Hope it helps!
I love doing wet cut first and I love finishing up with dry cut for all my haircuts . I love using the razor to give it a little texture 🥲.
Same!!! I have thick, coarse hair and no one layers it properly ... so frustrating! Love this cut/style!
Yasss, they're coming back again - finally!!!
I like using my shears. Love the cut & having lots of layers. I don’t like the v-cut, the sides being shorter (not a fan of the mullet like look ) & I don’t like how it leaves the ends looking scraggly for myself since I have thinner hair. Thanks for sharing so cute!
Glad you liked it!
My hair is super long... like to my butt long, I am so over it! I highlight my own hair & have just trimmed the very ends myself. I want something like this but just in longer lengths. looks amazing!
I love this layer stile cut 💖💖💖
Thank you so much , I've learned So Much From You I'm Berly starting in this Profession And All Your Videos Have Helped me A lot 💗 Blessings 🙌 🙏
How awesome! Feel free to DM on my IG if you ever have any questions!
❤️ 😍 💖 this. Lots of layers. Also the short one previously

Absolutely beautiful as always. I don't trust anyone to do my hair anymore. I would love to have you do my hair.
It’s beautiful it’s been awhile that I always wanted something like this ❤❤❤❤
Looks very nice! You are an excellent stylist!
♥️♥️
I ❤️ it. I ❤️ to watch Summer tutorial... step by step. Really amazing 👏.
Thanks so much 😊
Love love love this haircut!❤
Love it. You are great, thank you for showing this haircut, I'm thinking about having this style for my next haircut. 😍
Thanks!
Thanks again for doing this video, and if I ever find someone at all around here, that I might trust to do it, your video will be the first thing they see!❤
Find a stylist that will watch the video to learn the cut. My lady in michigan would totally replicate it and take the time
Exactly what you did is perfect
Wish i could get you to do my hair....
