Do solution architects really need to know how to code or just be able to articulate what the plans are that the coding team will implement for the project? The only reason why I'm hesitant in investing time into this is because I really don't want to code but I want to be in tech. Thoughts?
I rarely write code anymore. But as an SA (Solutions Architect) you're expected to help build POCs (Proof Of Concepts) from time to time, these are simple versions of the full product that you build in order to validate the feasibility of a solution and/or the utility of the services you've chosen. Keep in mind you can build an entreprise grade solution that is 100% noCode with AWS services...

Mate, if you are into working out, I'd switch that morning sugary cereal and either get some good protein and carbs to begin with or skip breakfast altogether. You can have the cereal after your workout for recovery. Other than that, congrats for all that you have achieved. I don't even have technical IT skills, but I am all about learning, and it's inspiring to see what others do and pack that into my learning process. Take care!

I've been working as a full-stack developer for the last 5 years and even though I still enjoy it, I'm feeling burned out on it. Switch man! If you feel it in your bones, do it. The cloud space has so much benefits and promise, you'll be more relaxed and balanced. I switched from Network/infrastructure to cloud and I'm enjoying every bit of it.
Cool! Really love the part of building solutions for clients! How much time do you usually spend on communicating with clients and colleagues, apart from building solutions?
It all depends on the situation and the client: some customer prefer to reach out to us when required, others prefer we accompany them in their journey, but we are always one email/phone call away from our customers. I also often share with them news about new releases / features. services when I know they'd benefit from it, or sometimes even blog posts and reference architectures
Looks like a lovely job. I previously worked as a project manager and my time was logged per project and I wasn't paid for any intermittent time between productivity. 9-10 hour days resulting in 5-6 maybe 7 hours pay if I were lucky. It was terrible and mentally draining especially with a toxic narcissist manager who belittled his team instead trying to make them perform their best by inspiring confidence. I hope to find this peace one day, really.

I love working with AWS services such as lambda, RDS and the dev world in general, though I'm a bit more extroverted and love working in teams and big picture solutions as well. So having a technical background and being confortable working with teams / customers is a big asset. This gives you ability to design solutions but also to connect with your customers to better understand their needs. I find myself doing whiteboarding sessions with my customers, giving them presentations, talking to their product people... So your social skills will definitely come in handy.

Hi there, thank you for the question. AWS Solutions Architects are not allowed in the customer's production accounts, meaning we can advise, guide, suggest architectures, propose designs... But we don't do the implementation ourselves. You can build a POC of course, but that would be in your own account

I’ve been working as a software engineer for few years now at one the largest corporations in Finland. I recently was reached out for a solutions engineer role. Does it make sense switching from SWE to solutions engineering career for the long run? FYI, I have a Bachelor’s in Business with pretty strong marketing experience and self taught developer. I do love coding but I naturally end up leading team presentations to stakeholders and also scrum master.

Generally speaking, you get assigned a territory. Mine for example is Quebec East, so I get to travel to meet my customers in my territory. Sometimes it's a 45min for the city next door, sometimes it's a few hours. Since the pandemic we've all been working from home and meeting our clients through video calls, so I don't see things changing in the foreseeable future

Buildings something that works on AWS is super easy, now building something that scales, that's secure, that's highly available and that can be maintained for years and years... That requires some experience

So let me address your questions in the same order: - I live in Montreal but my team HQ is in Toronto (5 hours drive) - Hours are flexible but some times of the year are more tough than others - 30% of the job (sometimes more) requires traveling to meet customers, although it has been video conferring since the pandemic

Sure! Think about High Availability, Resiliency & Cost optimization when you are presented with a problem: You might have two solutions or more in mind, but prefer the one that respect the constraints mentioned before. AWS offers 180+ services right now, but we don't expect you to know all of them by heart, certainly some of them are "essential" like S3, EC2, or RDS but for example, if you wanted to discuss a solution that require "data streaming" component, you can just refer to it as a "data streaming component" the interviewer won't penalize you if you don't mention the service by name (Kinesis data stream in this case) if you're familiar with other famous names in the industry, you can use them as well (Redis vs ElastiCache Redis..) Those a couple of tips I can give you on top of my mind, but if you have some specific use cases, I'll be happy to help. Good luck dude!

Bloody hell, I "work" from 10am all the way to 1am 7 days a week trying to become a Cloud Architect. AWS, Azure, GCP. Plus Cisco Networking - didn't think it would be this "cushy". I can't wait to get a job - so I can "cut" my hours :-)

I've been working as a full-stack developer for the last 5 years and even though I still enjoy it, I'm feeling burned out on it. I got 2 beginner certifications in cloud and I'm unsure if I should stick to full-development or switch to cloud developer (paas, serverless)

Cool! Really love the part of building solutions for clients! How much time do you usually spend on communicating with clients and colleagues, apart from building solutions?
It all depends on the situation and the client: some customer prefer to reach out to us when required, others prefer we accompany them in their journey, but we are always one email/phone call away from our customers. I also often share with them news about new releases / features. services when I know they'd benefit from it, or sometimes even blog posts and reference architectures

Looks like a lovely job. I previously worked as a project manager and my time was logged per project and I wasn't paid for any intermittent time between productivity. 9-10 hour days resulting in 5-6 maybe 7 hours pay if I were lucky. It was terrible and mentally draining especially with a toxic narcissist manager who belittled his team instead trying to make them perform their best by inspiring confidence.
I hope to find this peace one day, really.
Hey there, that was a really cool video on how a typical SA's day would look like. I'm a cloud developer atm and I'm new in my career after uni (roughly 2 years experience). I love working with AWS services such as lambda, RDS and the dev world in general, though I'm a bit more extroverted and love working in teams and big picture solutions as well. Would being a developer first be an ideal path to transition into SA (since it seems to be a more experienced role)? What was yours that enabled you to end up as an AWS solutions architect? Thanks

So having a technical background and being confortable working with teams / customers is a big asset. This gives you ability to design solutions but also to connect with your customers to better understand their needs. I find myself doing whiteboarding sessions with my customers, giving them presentations, talking to their product people... So your social skills will definitely come in handy.
Do you work remotely? Or do you go to office sometimes?
Full remote since COVID hit, but will probably be going back to the office a couple of days a week

Hi...i am inspired by your routine...I have one question....I don't like coding and recently passed AWS SAA-C02....As a solution architect, Do we only need to focus on architecture or we should also know all the services with their deployments...because AWS is very huge...It is difficult to learn the majority of services in detail.

Hi there, thank you for the question. AWS Solutions Architects are not allowed in the customer's production accounts, meaning we can advise, guide, suggest architectures, propose designs... But we don't do the implementation ourselves. You can build a POC of course, but that would be in your own account

I’ve been working as a software engineer for few years now at one the largest corporations in Finland. I recently was reached out for a solutions engineer role. Does it make sense switching from SWE to solutions engineering career for the long run? FYI, I have a Bachelor’s in Business with pretty strong marketing experience and self taught developer. I do love coding but I naturally end up leading team presentations to stakeholders and also scrum master.

Generally speaking, you get assigned a territory. Mine for example is Quebec East, so I get to travel to meet my customers in my territory. Sometimes it's a 45min for the city next door, sometimes it's a few hours. Since the pandemic we've all been working from home and meeting our clients through video calls, so I don't see things changing in the foreseeable future

Buildings something that works on AWS is super easy, now building something that scales, that's secure, that's highly available and that can be maintained for years and years... That requires some experience

So let me address your questions in the same order:
- I live in Montreal but my team HQ is in Toronto (5 hours drive)
- Hours are flexible but some times of the year are more tough than others
- 30% of the job (sometimes more) requires traveling to meet customers, although it has been video conferring since the pandemic

Hello right now i'm applying for solution architect internship in Malaysia. I've passed phone interview, any tips for case study and another 2 round interview?
Sure! Think about High Availability, Resiliency & Cost optimization when you are presented with a problem: You might have two solutions or more in mind, but prefer the one that respect the constraints mentioned before. AWS offers 180+ services right now, but we don't expect you to know all of them by heart, certainly some of them are "essential" like S3, EC2, or RDS but for example, if you wanted to discuss a solution that require "data streaming" component, you can just refer to it as a "data streaming component" the interviewer won't penalize you if you don't mention the service by name (Kinesis data stream in this case) if you're familiar with other famous names in the industry, you can use them as well (Redis vs ElastiCache Redis..)
Those a couple of tips I can give you on top of my mind, but if you have some specific use cases, I'll be happy to help. Good luck dude!
