What "new one" did you install? If it was the fan switch in the coolant. You most likely have an air pocket in you coolant. You will need to "burp" the coolant system.

Hello, I tried the jumper wire method to the fan switch. When the car is in accessories, the relay does click but the fan still does not come on. I jumped the radiator fan to the battery and it also comes on. I feel the wiring connected to the radiator fan itself is bad as I have no continuity, would this be the case

@@enjoiskateboardingSB I suspect you have a bad relay. You know the wire going from the sensor to the relay is good, because when you jump it, you can hear the relay. It is a bit tricky, but if you can figure out the relay pin out, you can pull the relay, and should be able to jump, or supply voltage to the fan, where the relay would.

Thanks, Jim your video and replies were very helpful. I've got a 1999 Civic. I noticed the temp gauge climbing today (1st hot day since I replaced the timing belt 7 water pump. I read your replies to Jjay Troche. The fan runs when jumpered. I checked the fuse. I opened radiator cap, turned on heat and ran car for about 10 minutes. The fan never kicked on. Can I leave my jumper wire plugged in and leave it that way so that it's always running? I'd like to leave it that way so I never have to worry about it not turning on Is it safe or no ?

    • @tubejim101

You can do that. Honda designed it with the switch, so your engine can
come up to operating temperature quickly. By just turn the fan on from
the start, it will take longer for your engine to warm up to operating
temperature. Pretty sure this will also make your gas mileage go down.

I have a 99 Civic LX car was running great till a while ago car started to over heat and i noticed the radiator fan wasn’t kicking on. I check the fuses and relays swapped them around and nothing fan wasn’t kicking on. I did the paper clip test boom fan kicked on so i Replaced the thermostat and the Fan Switch. Immediately i saw when it got to operating temperatures the fan would kick on for about 30s then turn off for about 2-3mins then kick back on for another 30s I found that odd even when engine was starting to over heat the fan would not stay on constant. Any suggestions?

Sounds like you have a pocket of air in the cooling system. It can take quite a long time to "burp" the system. Here is a video on an Accord. It is the same, but you have no bleeder valve to open: th-cam.com/video/mfTapX0DuQ0/w-d-xo.html

I just bought a 1994 Delsol and my radiator fan comes on right when I turn on ignition and or stays on when the car starts. So basically it's always on and does not work properly as per temperature. I asked previous owner if they bypass the fan but they said no. I disconnected the tempt switch and the fan still come on or stay on when car is on. It's not allowing my car to get to normal operating temperature so I guess I am failing smog test. The top radiator hose is HOT while the bottom stays cool, which is not normal. What you think might be the issue? I replaced the thermostat already.

    • @tubejim101

Check the battery, the alternator. You could also have a pocket of air in the cooling system. If they did not maintain the coolant, it may have eat up the water pump.

Hey Jim, I did the following troubleshoot and with a wire shorting the coolant sensor, the fan came on. So that indicates that it's either the temperature sensor or the thermostat to me...does that sound right to you?
As an aside, I now can't get the wiring clip to slide back on to the sensor. Do you know what would cause that? Did I bend the prongs in the clip when I put the test wire in? Any advice appreciated. Thanks!

    • @tubejim101
      @tubejim101  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hondas are known for getting a pocket of air in the cooling system. You have to "burp" them, to get air out of the lines. Will find a link to a video. A thermostat not working when it should, can cause your coolant temp to do strange things too. As for the fan not coming on. If you short the connector as in the video, and the fan does not come on, it is either your wiring (not likely) or your relay (most likely). Or the fan, but you tested that good with battery voltage. So you have two problems. Temp acting funny (thermostat or air), and fan not coming on (relay bad). Hope that helps.

If your fan comes on when you put a wire in it, but does not come on when the engine is hot, it is most likely that coolant switch that is bad.

Think early on, American car fans where driven by a belt. Then over time they switched to an electric fan. So, they seem to have always been an all, or nothing setup. Imports into the American market, seem to have kept to that too. The 92 to 00 Honda Civics are all on, or all off setup.

If the paper clip works, and switch tests good, then you most likely have an air pocket in your coolant.
