And for eSwatini the main reason is that they kinda just want their independence and we have no desire to annex them like Lesotho it would bring no benefits!
Bro giving the de facto lands of the SADR is not feasible as it just barren desert. There are literally 0 permanent settlements there. All the Saharwi people live in camps in Algeria.
he gave it La Güera, so technically there's one permanent settlement. but yeah, it's not really workable. either the SADR gets all of Western Sahara, Morocco gets all of Western Sahara, or if it gets split along the line of control the SADR portion would have to be combined with another country (Mauritania is the most geographically plausible, but probably wouldn't be a good idea, which is why it shouldn't be split)

Well, to be exact, their leaders/kings have than the people. Throughout (modern) South African history, there have been numerous and growing movements to have both become the 10th Province, and it has much to do with the fact that South Africa has SIGNIGICANTLY more ethnic Sesotho and Swati people than the entire populations of Lesotho and eSwatini. Them not being incorporated currently also largely comes down to the fact that the South African government already gets everything they want from those states without directly controlling them, and just doesn't want to spend the extra money on developing them to the same standards as the rest of South Africa. In reality on the ground though, they are honestly little more than the 10th and 11th provinces of South Africa, and largely are just not seen as different countries at all down here.
@thenomad47 Thanks for the information. I looked it up to figure out how true it is. And well, all ethnic division are sustained, at least a little, on racism. I think that the different peoples of South Africa are more different that those one of Ethiopia, which is also a major economic, demographic and cultural power in the continent.
@@rafaxd8178 The major difference however between Ethiopia and South Africa is that South Africa isn't going to war with itself every other week. And Ethiopia Really is not that big of a major player on the continent. Sure it has a large population, but that's honestly almost all it has, as much as I like Ethiopia because of their long history, it doesn't really have much else going for it, since it doesn't have a large GDP, strong military, or any real political or geopolitical power apart from sitting on one of the main tributaries of the Nile and controlling that. South Africa's ethnic populations get along quite perfectly unlike what happened with the Wars in Yugoslavia or what's currently happening in Ethiopia (or most of the rest of Africa for that matter), and actually makes up a MASSIVE chunk of the entire continent's GDP (12% of it, and 60% of the SADC region), whereas Ethiopia has Kenya, which completely rivals and arguably surpasses it in every possible way directly on it's border to it's south. His Criteria for the video isn't as much "ethnic" as much as it was to make functional countries that don't have border gore, some which balkanising South Africa wouldn't accomplish at all.
The best way to divide African nations is to divide by ethnicity, tribalism and colonial borders are a disaster, if the continent is divided by ethnicities, we will get bigger countries which might lead to more freedom with trade and commerce.
@@joshuafrimpong244 Because the vast majority of countries in sub-saharan africa (pretty much all but four of them) are multiethnic, containing often dozens, and sometimes hundreds, of different ethnicities. To make countries for each of them would mean a continent made up of like 500 belgium-sized states
Additionally, monoethnic countries tend to develop toxic nationalistic, regressive vices, and may consider expansionism. Having multiple (friendly) cultural groups to consider is a sanity check and allows for inter-polity issues to be considered before they forcefully involve their neighbors.
10:20 What if Ethiopian Somalia joined Somaliland instead. Then, itd be easier to keep stable (because Somalia still has a lot of extremist groups, Puntland, and Jubaland to worry about). And then Somaliland could work with Ethiopia to provide an alternate port and rail line to Hargeisa and Berbera?
Then they could avoid the steep decline from Addis Ababa to Djibouti. And that itself could help Ethiopia's huge economy and population have more access to the world, while the Somali minority benefits from it too, while Somalia works it out
It would be pretty cool to see 5 or 10 years down the line if/when some things in Africa change to see how close or far off you are with some of your proposed border changes.
Western Sahara should really be fully independent. The land that is de facto occupied is uninhabitable desert and most of the Sahrawi people are refugees in Algeria and Mauritius because Morocco forced them out
Apart from my belief that northern and southern Nigeria should no longer be united and go their separate ways, I don't see anything wrong with your modifications.
None of us really know how to redraw these boundaries. If the internal mental map of the world we see is different from the wall map, we are basing ours on only a couple of factors while the next person is fixed on different ones. If we were able to bring our map into force, a significant number of people would find themselves living in the wrong country.
The biggest problem I see with this is Ethiopia's lack of sea access. This is a currently an issue for Ethiopia, despite leasing use of the port of Djibouti and a preliminary agreement signed with Somaliland along similar lines. But Ethiopia can't, nor will it, rely on leasing ports forever. Eventually, it's going to try to gain its very own sea access -- by force, if necessary.
OK, now you have said that southern Central Africa should stay pretty much the same... For a start, the Matabele, who inhabit the north west to south east of Zimbabwe are more closely related to the Zulus of South Africa than to the majority Mashona of the north east of the country. The only reason 'Zimbabwe' exists today is because of Rhode's machinations with Lobengula, whose Matabeles were in de facto control of the region at the time; otherwise, a more likely combination would have been for the Ndebele of Zimbabwe and South Africa to unite with the Zulu, and probably the Xhosa as well, in a Zulu-related nation.
God, what a colossal mess. Ethiopia balkanized. But Nigeria South and North kept together? Mayotte, respect for the alleged will of the people, but not same in the Spanish enclaves of Melilla and Ceuta? You are not consistent.
You forgot Zanzibar, which is a semi-autonomous region of Tanzania, though most of the population is of Swahili descent there is also a significant Arab population which has influenced the culture and language of the island, plus it was independent as a sultanate and a British Protectorate until 1964, so it would make sense to give independence. But anyways great video.
I like these "fixing borders" videos and people who get upset by it are silly. You say multiple times that it's not serious and just for fun. Can you do Oceania as well? I would like to know how you would fix the Australian state borders. 😃
For Eswatini and Lesotho I'd prefer them gaining the lands inside South Africa that are settled by its respective peoples thus strengthening these rare more naturally developed nation states
Kenya's North Eastern Province should go to Somalia, as it has always been predominatly Somali, home to about 3 million Somalis. Puntland currently does not recognize the federal government and constitution of Somalia and operates as an idependent state. However, Puntland does not want to fully break away from Somalia, they want a better constitution. I would love to see Somalia get their shit together and include all of Greater Somalia, with Somaliland and Puntland (and maybe other regions) acting as semi-autonomous regions.
Due to my fascination with Western Sahara (it and the Chagos Islands are two of the things I look out for in terms of news a lot), your proposal is the most naive. That area has a miniscule population that's largely pastoral and semi-nomadic. There are legitimately only three options that are remotely feasible, with your "formalized status quo" option not being one of them. Option 1) would be annexation by Morocco but with significant, real autonomy, and a weighted vote among ethnic Sahrawis to ensure continued self-governance without Rabat being able to abolish autonomy through continued settlement of loyal Moroccans in that territory. Option 2) would be the complete withdrawal of Morocco, since, from an international law standpoint, that is Rabat's responsibilty. The UN has rejected Morocco's claim to the territory and reaffirmed the Sahrawis' right for self-determination, the big issue is that Morocco has established "facts on the ground" similar to what Israel has been doing in the West Bank. Option 3) would be a partition, with Morocco receiving the bulk of northern Western Sahara (aka Río de Oro or Wadi ad-Dahab), covering the towns of Al Farcia, Boucraa, Boujdour, Hawza, Laayoune, Mahbas, and Smara. The first Moroccan border wall along with the current de-facto border would serve as a reasonable border for that. This would give the most populated sections to Morocco, but it would give an independent SADR both a continued border with its traditional supporter Algeria and it would give them a useful future port with Dakhla (Morocco is planning a modern port there at the moment), better than La Güera, which with its historic airport served as the best way to access the southern section of Western Sahara (besides the nearby French/Mauretanian Port-Étienne/Nouadhibou).
We don't have perfect borders. Bolivia misses its coastline a lot. It even still has a navy, despite being landlocked. I'd give a little bit of north Chile back to Bolivia if I were to redraw the map.
Do you guys believe African nations would be better off as nation states or as multinational countries like most are now? Is ethnicity the main principle to define nationhood in today's world?
Tuaregs don’t make up enough of the population to control such a large territory. I also don’t believe that the AES will cede any territory to the Tuareg. Maybe they’ll get some of Algeria’s territory in the Sahara.
One suggestion I would have would be making Annabon independent from Equatorial Guinea. That is another separatist movement going on because the people on Annabon have been treated very poorly by the Equatorial Guinea government.
Isn’t balkanization bad for everyone? Since this is just a hypothetical video, it seems that large multi-ethnic regional powers would be more beneficial overall than tiny ethno-states.

His Criteria for the video isn't as much "ethnic" as much as it was to make functional countries that don't have border gore, some which balkanising South Africa wouldn't accomplish at all.
no no, the western sahara territory needs to be the whole territory, if not ¿what's the reason to do a "fix" to the borders?
16:14 Animalistic? I think he means Animistic 💀
The best way to divide African nations is to divide by ethnicity, tribalism and colonial borders are a disaster, if the continent is divided by ethnicities, we will get bigger countries which might lead to more freedom with trade and commerce.
If the continent was divided by ethnicities, the resulting coutnries would be much SMALLER not bigger 😅
How? @@HarJBeRw
@@joshuafrimpong244
There are hundreds of ethnic groups in Africa.
And that itself could help Ethiopia's huge economy and population have more access to the world, while the Somali minority benefits from it too, while Somalia works it out
Hey General Knowledge, next video redraw US state borders.😊
It would be pretty cool to see 5 or 10 years down the line if/when some things in Africa change to see how close or far off you are with some of your proposed border changes.
Western Sahara should really be fully independent. The land that is de facto occupied is uninhabitable desert and most of the Sahrawi people are refugees in Algeria and Mauritius because Morocco forced them out
im from somaliland and you did great work but i can't talk for the rest of africa but form as somalilandar that was correct
Apart from my belief that northern and southern Nigeria should no longer be united and go their separate ways, I don't see anything wrong with your modifications.
You forgot part of Djibouti being ethnic Somali and the NFD region of Kenya is also ethnic Somali😑
Bro's trying to unlock a new world war
First he wants the UK to give away Gibraltar before even talking about their African possessions.
None of us really know how to redraw these boundaries. If the internal mental map of the world we see is different from the wall map, we are basing ours on only a couple of factors while the next person is fixed on different ones. If we were able to bring our map into force, a significant number of people would find themselves living in the wrong country.
East African Federation (with just the original countries involved, it should have never been expanded) is something I’d like to see in my lifetime
The "I'm Sorry" in the title is brilliantly funny... well done.
It's the first time I see your face, shocking to see you don't use a uniform and a bicorn Napoleon hat 😦😮
long time subscriber ... you're quickly turning into my favorite channel
I’m really enjoying these.
(I haven't watched it yet - and I'm an ex-British-colonial...) This should be interesting!
I swear I've seen this somewhere before
Not splitting up South Africa is crazy
Saying “Sorry” in your title is very Canadian of you. Which you are not. 😅
What a perfectly uncontroversial video that will start no arguments whatsoever
I like these "fixing borders" videos and people who get upset by it are silly. You say multiple times that it's not serious and just for fun. Can you do Oceania as well? I would like to know how you would fix the Australian state borders. 😃
For Eswatini and Lesotho I'd prefer them gaining the lands inside South Africa that are settled by its respective peoples thus strengthening these rare more naturally developed nation states
You like LOTR... maybe you can do this re-bordering of Middle Earth?
Kenya's North Eastern Province should go to Somalia, as it has always been predominatly Somali, home to about 3 million Somalis. Puntland currently does not recognize the federal government and constitution of Somalia and operates as an idependent state. However, Puntland does not want to fully break away from Somalia, they want a better constitution. I would love to see Somalia get their shit together and include all of Greater Somalia, with Somaliland and Puntland (and maybe other regions) acting as semi-autonomous regions.
Give Western Sahara to the Saharaui.
Fixing the America's borders would be the shortest video ever
As a Brazilian, I'm just waiting to see the South America video. How will he fix a continent with perfect borders?
We don't have perfect borders. Bolivia misses its coastline a lot. It even still has a navy, despite being landlocked. I'd give a little bit of north Chile back to Bolivia if I were to redraw the map.
Sorry for what?
We had Europe, followed by Asia, now Africa. I'm wondering if we'll continue into Americas, as I'd like to see proposals of border changes there.
The border gore of the Sahel Confederation is worse than a colonial charter
"Fixing Africa's borders"
Me:Ok
"As a European"
Me:NOOOO!!!!!!!!
Not again
Do you guys believe African nations would be better off as nation states or as multinational countries like most are now? Is ethnicity the main principle to define nationhood in today's world?
freeeeeeeeeee kabyliaaaaa
vive la kabylie libre et independante
timunent i tmurt taqvaylit
This is so fun when your country isn't involved
technically you are 7.1 percent qualified
"Free Tuareg Nation" is just Frank Herbert's wet dream
I love these vids u should do more
Keep Ethiopia united, it's a nation with a proud history
The words 'Fixing' and 'Africa' in the same sentence is an oxymoron.
Bro mentioning Biafra changed my mood
Tuaregs don’t make up enough of the population to control such a large territory.
I also don’t believe that the AES will cede any territory to the Tuareg. Maybe they’ll get some of Algeria’s territory in the Sahara.
I love these vids ❤
To south American next
Ngl, i would be kinda sad if Mali lost Gao and Timbuktu
One suggestion I would have would be making Annabon independent from Equatorial Guinea. That is another separatist movement going on because the people on Annabon have been treated very poorly by the Equatorial Guinea government.
Isn’t balkanization bad for everyone? Since this is just a hypothetical video, it seems that large multi-ethnic regional powers would be more beneficial overall than tiny ethno-states.
we kabylians need our own country 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Would be interesting if you also changed and added countries based on the natural boarders and not the political straight lines.
Interesting ideas, I think the best bet for Africa is to be divided among tribal lines.
Time to fix Oceania, North America, and South America
You should wait to read TLOR. I re-read it in my late 30s and then watched all the movies.
As for Libya, the Benghazi part is known as Cyrenaica.
You obliterated Ethiopia 😅. It is crazy how all the ethnic groups managed to coexist.
