I grew up around a bunch of Liberian refugees in the 90s, and one of the cultural things that I picked up from them is the snap-handshake thing. That is, when they shake hands, they snap their fingers, but it's a shared snap. You apply pressure with your middle finger against the other person's middle finger during the shake, so when you pull back it makes a snap. If you can do it, it's a fun way to show off cultural competency to other Liberians.

Too many don't even know about our territories. Guam suffered brutally during World War II at the hands of the Japanese, but the native Chamorros stayed loyal to us despite the occupiers' attempts to change them by force. They even did their best to keep the few surviving soldiers hidden and alive until we returned, at the risk of their own lives (sadly, only one American soldier was still alive by the 1944 recapture). Truly impressive people.

You guys nailed this Liberia thing. Nice presentation. OOOooohh Liberia was one of Africa most respected and look to country; but, unending crisis strangled its respect; now, it is one of Africa forgotten and less significant countries.
While growing up in Costa Rica, we had to learn the capital cities of each province. Coincidently, there is a city in the Province of Guanacaste called: Liberia. So, after moving on to learning about other countries in the world, I came across that indeed there was a country named Liberia. I had thought somehow that there was a connection with the people from Guanacaste or the Liberians. I don’t know where the name Liberia originated from (whether it was Spanish, Portuguese, English or Other). I don’t think Barby discussed it in this episode; but the fact that Costa Rica’s Second International Airport is located in the city by the same name as an African Country with no relation to each other is quite interesting.
How could you not mention George Weah? The current president of Liberia who was a famous soccer player in the 1990s., playing for AC Milan and Chelsea among others.
2:11 Greenville is the #1 growing city in the south, if you count an actual city not just a residential city in Houston or Dallas it is the number one growing city, tons of people are moving here and the county updated the population of the city from 48,000 to 60,000 based on parents with enrolled students and the students them selves in the city that go to public schools.
This short and educational piece makes me share tears for my Mama Liberia. Tears of pride and joy cause I am a native of this great and naturally rich country. Tears of sorrow cause we continue to bringing shame on Mama Liberia by our insensitive political judgment which placed power in the hands of corrupt and/or unqualified people. Thanks so much for helping people know us a bit more than they did yesterday. Liberia, the sacred shrine of my DNA will rise again to the shame and demise of they that are betraying her love and trust today. Bless your heart and work!

@@hawkeyeten2450 a damn shame, I know all 5 territories by name
Alot of Americans for some reason hate us while we look up to them, its insane
I think even with the Ebola incidents Liberia is definitely one of those african countries that turned their economy around 🇱🇷👍🏻

I lived in liberia from 2018 to 2020 when I came back to the US due to Covid-19. A lot has changed. The people there are some of the friendliest, most inviting people I have met. The bad reputation that available information on google has given them is completely outdated.
Ha Sasstown got me 😂😂
Same, wonder if the people are THAT sassy? Hmmmm......
A place I should live
Brandon Espinoza we are!! Haha and “sassay” is a word that Liberians love.
Indeed.

"These towns sound so American" As a brit, i find this very funny

IKR? Nothing American about it. We have those in Canada too. I wonder why? Is it maybe because of Eng.... nah, probably not.
When I have Brazilian tourists coming to Portugal saying "this sounds so Brazilian!" We know the feeling, brothers.

Well over time Americans have a different name for towns and cities like your cities in the Kingdom of England, Scotland wales and Northern Ireland such as Wessex And in America they have Philadelphia

@9:33 no!!! Im a native Liberian. my family was living in Liberia during the rebel war, and rebels attacked native Liberians, Muslims, and government officials (who were native Liberian). That why my family had to escape to a refugee camp in a different country.
I know he was mentioned as president, but I think that for a big chunk of the world, George Weah is the most famous Liberian person who ever lived. A football legend.
We love you Liberia! From, Americans ❤️❤️❤️

Opens episode up with saying how it was one of the only African nations to never be colonized, then proceeds to talk about its colonization for the rest of the episode...
You are correct, I should've specified, I meant "Colonized by westerners" or "Europeans" UNLESS you consider the African Americans coming back as "repatriation"
It's OK Barbs, I still love you
wowowowow picky im breaking up with you
i thought you loved me bye xx
I didn’t hear it the whole episode. I heard a lot more then just that..
As a US citizen, I love Liberia! You guys are awesome!
Why do you love it, and what makes it awesome?
thank you, we don't get alot of positive attention from a huge majority of Americans , you would think them living in a country with alot of privileges they wouldn't be bothered by another country having a similar flag to theirs. They hate us but we Liberians look up to them, its sad.
@@lzephyra I think respecting countries based on their culture and people is far more important than gdp per capita and other such statistics. From what I have seen, the Liberian people are a warm, generous, and humble group. 🇱🇷🇺🇸

Liberia derives from the Latin word "Liber" meaning free.
How could you not mention George Weah? The current president of Liberia who was a famous soccer player in the 1990s., playing for AC Milan and Chelsea among others.
What? Football player can became a President of the country?
TheSovietComrade Apparently...
He did mention him, he said he was elected president after Ellen Johnson.
Teresa Rivas Ugaz He definitely is more famous for his football career though. He could have said something about it
Alessandro Pedretti I know, he'll probably talk more about Weah on Flag Friday

Three reasons to love Liberia:
-It's literally named "Freedom"
-It was never colonized or occupied
-ITS PRESIDENT IS GEORGE "TOTAL GOAL" WEAH!!
6:38 For someone like me who comes from ethniclly homongeous country like Poland where something like 99% of people is basically polish, it's unbeliveble to see how diverse other countries can be.
Pomeranians, Silesians and Kasubians? lol or maybe those guys are the 1%
7:42 One of the few that created a writing system? Dude!
Please check Nativ' Lang on West African languages.
Buchanan, Liberia is named after Thomas Buchanan who was the cousin to our 15th President James Buchanan
10:00 That's very interesting! The very same thing happens here in Brazil! We even have a similar sounding word for shikii, "chique" which means "fancy". There must be some correlation between the two words.
Same in Belgium, The Netherlands, and France!
Also in Germany (schick and chique)
Eu pensei a mesma coisa na hora kkk

I recently was told by liberia was a American colony but thanks to internet and you it clear
aadish 99 It's a misconception. I wish he woulda touched more on the American-Liberian civil war. It's one of the more interesting stories of wars in Africa.
+Abandoned Hope
The ACS was a private organization, Liberia was their private colony and the main reason it got independence was because the ACS thought that Britain and France were interested in gaining it, so they cut their losses and told the ancestors of the Americo-Liberian they were on their own.
aadish 99 it was privately colonised. Don’t let the internet fool you.
-aadish 99
That good English
If they were ever a colony, then other colonies should follow their example and throw off the United States. Puerto Rico needs independence now.

That’s the image of Malagueta pepper, a chilli from Brazil. I think you meant Melegueta pepper (or grains of paradise, Guinea pepper) which is a spice from West Africa. Dammned internet searchers, mixing up e with a :)
So many names and even a coast named after this pepper. It must be a fine spice. Never got the chance to taste it. So, from now on, I have a goal in this life, to get my hands on some of these grains :) Peace!
Oh, I remember Liberia! On the last summer holidays, I got really interested in units of measurement (for some reason) and especially American/Imperial units (I'm European of Swedish and Russian decent). So I read up about the Imperial measurement and remember reading, that they were also used in Liberia. I did not understand that at the time, but now I most certainly do (and I also understand the flag now). Thank You, mr. Barbato!
Kpelle is pronounced “pelle” the k is silent also Gio is pronounced “Gee-oh” also Mano is pronounced “Ma-Nuh”

4:50 sorry to be that guy, but the lion is the English national animal, not British. Wales has a dragon/red kite, Northern Ireland sometimes uses a stag, and Scotland uses a Unicorn, or sometimes a rampant lion. Britain doesn't really have an animal as a whole, except for maybe the British Bulldog
Scotland uses the mythical Haggis Beast and Wales is actually two animals, Joe Calzaghe riding a Dragon
