How I re-created 'I Feel Love' by Donna Summer & Giorgio Moroder on my Roland JD-Xi

  • Although my version of this classic 70's song doesn't appear on TH-cam (it didn't pass their copyright restrictions), it did make it onto my Facebook page a year ago, where it popped up as a memory for me last week. I re-posted the video on a few Facebook group pages where it developed quite a bit of interest and I had several requests to show how I put it all together. So here goes...
Here is some additional information that a friend suggested I should include:
The JD-Xi voices that I use are:
    D1- 001:JP8 Strings1
    D2- 168:Pulse Clav
    DR- 012:R&B Kit1
    AN- 008:ResoSaw Bs1
    -----------------------------------------------------
To switch the 'Interactive Chord' feature on/off press 'Auto Note' + 'Enter' (together)
    --------------------------------------------------
To change the delay settings, press 'Menu' and cursor through to 'Effects' press 'Enter'. Next cursor through to 'Delay' and change 'Delay Type' from 'Pan' to 'Single'. Then cursor to 'Delay Time' and change the musical symbol to a 'semiquaver' or 'sixteenth note'. Then press 'Exit' a couple of times to get out of the menus.
    ------------------------------------------------------
The chords that I play are:
    C (C,E,G) to C minor (C,Eb,G)
    E minor (Eb, G, Bb)
    F (F,A,C)
    G (G,B,D)
    ------------------------------------------------------
    Drum patterns
    Main sequence:
    BD1:1,5,9,11
    Rim: all 16 positions
    CHH: 1,3,5,7,9,11,13,15
    PHH: 2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16
    CYM3: 5,13
    Perc2: 1,9
    Other 1: 3,7,11,15
    Variation 1: BD1 pattern
    Variation 2: BD1 and CYM3 patterns

This is really amazing…as someone who composes mostly by ear and just small parts that I loop together and put on different tracks to give the illusion of an entire piece of music…. It’s really great to hear what note is what when you show how you recreated a masterpiece like this…. Over time I kind of get a feeling for what note is connected to what feeling I get when I hear them in a sequence…anyhow, this is awesome & it was so ahead of it’s time when it came out.

@@DavidGordonJDXi You're so welcome!! I'm incredibly inspired after a decade of feeling a bit blocked & closed off from my muse...
I've been watching so many tutorials to see what would be the right synth combination for me, where I can throw my rough but complete ideas down w/o starting on a computer & getting the inspiration knocked out of me.
I know this is not the right terminology but my proper songs that have the verse/pre-chorus/chorus (repeat)(Bridge)chorus,1st verse Chorus-fade song structure.... each of those pieces are about 32 metronome click lengths (I think that's 8 bars long)
..is there enough sample length, or bar length available on the sequencer tracks to record them with fx directly into here or will I need to make a comfortable compromise where I can hear and record myself through the choices and vocal paramaters set on the JDxi and record it into Logic Pro from it in real-time ( or to my Yamaha AW2816 Workstation)? Thanks for reading this Novel....our art has a technical component for sure! Hope you are having an incredible weekend. Best, Steve.

    • @DavidGordonJDXi
      @DavidGordonJDXi  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hi Steve, it's very hot here this afternoon. I'm not sure if you're in the UK, but we are into a mini heatwave over the next few days.
The sequencer on the JD-Xi has a standard 16 note range and that can be doubled or quadrupled. Also the note range can be changed from 16 to 12 or 32 notes. The lowest tempo setting is 60 BPM. I've found the sequencer very easy to use and I've made several complex backing tracks for cover versions of some of my favourite songs. Have a look at my cover version of Boston's More than a feeling. I was particularly proud of the drum patterns that I made after studying some drum tutorials. Also the bass lines were sequenced. My friend who plays bass guitar was very impressed with the sound.
I use a Zoom R8 recorder to build my songs up. I like the feel of a standalone device rather than trying to record on a PC.
Having this fairly basic setup has really opened up my musical creativity and keeps me entertained for hours on end.
      All the best, David 🎸🎹🎶👍

@@DavidGordonJDXi Hey David, I really cant say enough how appreciative I am for your conversing with me here!! Finally I’m getting somewhere understanding how I can have fun, without being chained to my mac, and still bring my words and music to life!!
I am in NYC in what lovingly is known as Hell’s Kitchen-close to Central Park & around the corner from Lincoln Center & Times Square (where the NYE balldrop is usually televised) and it has been very hot/humid as well, in fact, a Thunderstorm overnight knocked over a long window garden pot that managed to survive their prior since 2006..which I have to attend to to save the Dahlias, petunias & Black Eyed Susans lol..

But first I am going to take your advice and listen/watch some of the other videos you’ve made as it will both be inspiring & intelligent researching so Cheers!!!! Oh..P.S. I have on accident once worked out the bassline on keyboard to Madonna’s (initially meant to be punk, but became dance)track “Burning Up” as well as the Opening chime + synth sound sequence of “Open Your Heart” the latter of which has a baseline thats a lot of fun but much more clearer to separate out to listen too in the 10min 12” Maxi version found on youtube if curious… talk again, thank you David & have an awesome day until😃

Well, not nothing but to produce a sound id have to hit he key quite hard but if i press just normally i dont get the sound. Is there a setting i need to change for this as i tried twisting all the knobs but couldnt get sound just from normal pressure.
    Many thanks

Yes there is a setting Mat. The JD-Xi has a velocity sensitive keyboard, but it is a bit impractical on such a small (and delicate) keys.
Press Menu, and the first item is System... press Enter
Use the cursor buttons to locate: KEY TOUCH: Velocity
Use the -Value+ buttons to increase the value to 120
Then press the Exit button a couple of times
You should see the word "Writing" in the display.
Doing this basically turns off the velocity sensitivity
      All the best, David 🎶🎹👍

Dave can you tell me how you isolated Donna's voice as I'd love to do this track with clean samples of her vocals

    • @DavidGordonJDXi

Hi Boris, I found a video on TH-cam that had an isolated vocal track. I don't think it was Donna Summer, but it sounded very much like her. I recorded the different song lines and the chorus into my sampler and then manually played them with the sequences from my JD-Xi. Here's a link to the video:

@@DavidGordonJDXi many thanks.. the different things you can do with this track are endless, & I asked you because there is software out there that can apparently isolate & seperate tracks from a recording! I am dubious that it can be done & if I'm wrong then it would be an amazing tool.. I often wonder when I hear tracks with samples from old hits etc about how they manage to do it without access to the master.
Anyway thanks Dave & if you want to see what I regard as the masterpiece of all attempts at I Feel Love then search for Luke Neptune & check out his version, if you haven't seen it before then I guarantee you will be awestruck mate, it's truly exceptional.

These are really cool, David. I’ve had my JD Xi for a few years, still getting to grips with it, I use Logic Pro,
so have only really used it as a sound module so far. Thanks for these.
You mention crib sheets, where can I find them please?

Many thanks for your nice comments Simon. The crib sheets that I refer to are just some very rough notes that I make to describe the drum patterns. All the best, David 👍

hi Dave, sorry, I think I've got this down..however when I apply the delay to the analogue bass part it seems to apply it to the synth2 part as well making the synth 2 sound not sound right at all. what am I doing wrong so that it only applies it to the bass line or is that not possible.

    • @DavidGordonJDXi
      @DavidGordonJDXi  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi Mat, look at the effects setting on digital 2 and turn the delay light off, but leave the delay light on for the analogue bass. It should then sound correct.🎶🎹👍

Interesting take on how you constructed this cover. I'll have to see if I can find your finished version on Facebook and give it a listen. However, and this is only my opinion from having listened to this song more times than I can remember since it was first released, but I really think you ruined it with the tambourine, which if I'm not mistaken, was never in the original. And also, you should have left the delay where you originally set it, rather than having it repeat more often and more choppy. That would have matched the original much better. But I still thank you for posting your creative process in making this cover, as I'm just beginning to dig into my JD-Xi after having it since the beginning of August of this year and am always looking for ideas from other owners.
I just did a search for "David Gordon" on Facebook and you would not believe the number of members with your name that came up. I clicked on a number of them that were from Britain, Australia, and New Zealand because of your accent, but none of them had any videos, and I just don't have the time or patience to click on every single David Gordon listed in order to find your "I Feel Love" cover. If you could provide me with further information, or maybe even a link to your Facebook page, I would really appreciate it, because, as I said, I would like to hear your complete cover. Thanks.

@@DavidGordonJDXi Hi David. Thanks for the link! I just watched your "live" performance of your cover and thought it was amazing. I really liked the "fog" effect throughout, and especially the "strobe" effect during the first break that almost gave me a seizure, lol. And while it was sometimes a little out of sync with your playing, I am blown away by how you managed to get Donna's vocals mixed in with your playing at all. Really great addition, and cool overall. And the fact that you were doing the mix while playing and recording was also very cool multi-tasking. Great job!

Thank you for your great comments, they are very much appreciated. This was one of my very early attempts at a complete cover version and I can hear the bits that are out of sync. I hadn't had the sampler very long either and I've now learned how to tighten up the samples. It was great fun to do and I still play it every now and then. All the best, David 🎶👍

I don't understand why you chose single instead of pan for the original and delayed bass line.
The original versions I listen to (album version, radio edit and the 12" remix) has quite distinct panning...

    • @DavidGordonJDXi
      @DavidGordonJDXi  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

It was quite a long time ago, but from what I remember I couldn't get the effect to work with the pan delay setting. It's a shame because as you quite rightly say, the original uses a very distinct panning effect.

Hi Tim, thanks for your comment and subscribing - it's been a while since I did this but I'm pretty sure that I just manually programmed each note into the sequencer. Give it a try and let me know how you get on. All the best, David 👍
