rewatching the video I think a good analogy would be "do you need a car over a horse drawn carriage to go 100 feet?" 100 feet, not a big difference. 2 miles? big difference
With a little bit training I was able to transition from iron sights to red dots. I find that I am much faster and able to reach out to 50-yard targets with ease. The dot I chose to put on my EDC was the Holosun 507C.
Red dots are fantastic and increase your skill dramatically. Also, the skill that the red dots helps you develop, such as holding the gun steady, steady trigger pulls, and recoil management transfer over to irons. I am almost as good with irons as I am with a red dot because of the red dot. I also now use my iron sights like a red dot. Target focused slightly blurry front sight. Red dots are super important but once your iron sight skill can match or come close to matching they become less important over time. Use both and maintain proficiency in both.
I just got back into shooting a couple years ago right before Covid and things have changed since I last shot with particularly, a handgun. I’m older, my eyes have gotten worse, and I also developed some kinda of eye condition in my dominant eye. Now when I shoot I have to actually grip it as I normally would but just use my other eye when aiming. Red dot has helped my dominant eye when aiming. So it has helped but yeah I get it it’s another failure point
Red dot or not, I am accurate within 15 meters to my threat. Anything behind I won’t engage and put other lives at risk. Be responsible and choose what dot or irons best fit for you. Great Vid Like always 😎
For an average EDC gun, no dot optics are not a necessity! However, if you like to shoot a lot at the range and push your limits, like shooting steel targets and running drills the optic can make you much more sufficient and faster with the transitions between shots. It will also allow you to have a better accuracy at a distance without over thinking it all. For instance I can shoot my steel plates anywhere from 10 yards to 150+ yards with a 9mm handgun. Could I do that without the red dot? Possibly… but it’s definitely goin to be MUCH harder to do! I say RED dots are king bc they make you faster and more accurate with very little practice. It can also teach “old dogs new tricks” so to speak like my father for example! And at the end of the day why not get what makes you the best shooter! We live in America!! 🇺🇸💯💪🏼
Would be nice if there was a way to add variable cowitness so you could get full, 1/3, 1/4, 1/2 etc bc now you can only do that with plates or different height irons
I have ran both. I like red dots, but for a defensive hand gun at close range (3-10 YRDS) I am quicker with iron sight than red dot. I don't need to shoot a pistol at range like 50 plus yards. My pistol is a tool that allows me to get to my rifle with an optic if I need it. Everyone is different, I really wanted to use the Red dot, but for me I don't really worry about the rear site at close range. It's front sight, front sight. Period.
I totally agree with you. I feel like optics belong on a rifle versus a pistol. I feel the benefits of an optic mounted pistol would benefit target shooters for longer distances however, unless your law-enforcement who solely uses pistols 95% of their duty, then I just don’t see the benefits. Even then, I just don’t feel they need them either due to the fact close range encounters for law enforcement is a very common occurrence .I have used red dots previously and I just feel if I’m going to invest in a decent optic it’s going to be on a rifle. In conclusion whatever works with you works for you. Just an opinion. I love red dots.
I really want to love pistol optics. I’m struggling. I’ve been shooting for 30 years and am fast accurate with irons. But my vision is getting worse. I like the idea of a target focus instead of sight focus as the world is getting blurrier. I don’t have issues with optics on rifles. But I am having such a hard time transitioning with pistols I think mostly because I am struggling seeing the dot on my follow up shots. I don’t feel I have poor recoil control. But the fact that I can always see my front site when I’m shooting quickly somehow helps me and not being able to see the dot as easily is challenging. Is this in my head? Will practice fix this and my brain will just adapt?
Can you make one like the holosun with the dot, plus the circle, plus reticle to cycle thru? Top loading battery and all? I like to run your guys optic on rifles. But a pistol dot that could do that stuff would be amazing! 🤩
@SwampfoxOptics Damn, I would love to buy a red dot from you, but unfortunately it is unfeasible for the Brazilian public, 1 dollar costs almost 6 reais and we pay almost 100% taxes on imported products. Of the 12 months worked in Brazil, 5 months are spent paying taxes. communism is destroying the country, but unfortunately I was born here and I have no other option. At least I can watch the videos and have some fun. Thanks for the feedback and the alert. A CZ shadow in Brazil would be the same as paying 10 thousand dollars in the United States. A red dot from you here would be the same as if you paid 1500 dollars for it in the United States.
Anything that helps you better protect yourself and others should be used as much as possible. Training with iron sights is useful if you ever encounter a situation where you don't have a red dot (loss of battery, damage, loses zero, etc.) Of course, for 99.99% of the time a red dot will work. On the same token, 99.99% of the time iron sights will work (they also can drift over time). That 0.01% chance that either one doesn't work might be worth training for because that might be the one second that counts.
I feel that personal daily defense pistols are better without any gadgets. I feel they should be simple and sleek, easy to get out and pop off a couple. Defense from daily threats will almost always be very close quarters and maybe just enough time to get it unholstered and up. I wouldn’t want to explain how I had time to use an optic system in court. A hurry May feel my life wasn’t really threatened. Now, at hime, next to the bed, that might be good actually. Usually at home, you’re aware of a threat and already have it out and ready. My daily is slick and greasy, no hammer, no sharp iron sights, light, easy to pull and get on top of eliminating threats. I also really dislike having that red dot system up there in the way. It feels clunky as a carry.
My red dots are all attached to PPCs, carbines, rifles and target pistols. Given the typically shorter distances of gunshots by civilians protecting themselves, family, and property, none of my self defense weapons have red dots. Personally, iron sights provide faster target acquisition for upper center body mass targeting.
Well we dont NEED to drink a fifth of jack on friday. We dont NEED to run and slide on that ice. We dont NEED to make that moped faster. Its about the glory. LONG LIVE RED DOTS!!!
02:33 We are not past the point on rifles of not needing back up sights if your scope or red dot gets damaged beyond the ability to retain zero and or still function at all. Failure mitigation is not the same as damage from sources beyond your control.
Irons all the way. Less that can go wrong. No "fishing" for the dot when you really need it. Sure you can find the red dot in controlled setting. Can you do it when your adrenaline is running? It's just a variable I don't care to add to the mix.
Agree 100%. Been firing and using only iron sights for as long as I can remember. Last week decided to purchase a red dot, zeroed at range and oh man the almost instant accuracy, faster firing on target was amazing. Now in process of equipping all my pistols with red or green dots. Good video thanks for sharing.
Might not need but it’s nice to have! I’d rather use the tools available to me to make protecting myself and others as efficient and effective as possible!
Good job representing both sides equally. The only additional points I'd make with red dots is con: they're added bulk to conceal or get caught on clothing and pro: they're good for far sighted shooters. I like a dot on my micro carry, but not on my full sized pistols.
Always situational. Taking a 41yd shot at a threat that has a rifle... Absolutely need a red dot. Taking a shot at 3 yd's, no sights required. Not even Irons
I get joked on all the time for refusing to use a dot on my handgun. Then i make them the joke when i shoot just as good, if not better with my irons. Its all about skill and discipline and people have gotten too dependent on the technology.
This is a great point! Only thing I'll add is good technology makes the people with the skill/discipline even better. F1 drivers are some of the best in the world, and their skill and discipline allows them to make the most out of the technology they have available to them.
You missed the biggest selling point. The information you get from a red dot is significantly more than from iron sights. You can easily see all the movement you're putting into your gun in real-time in a way that is perceptible to the human eye. You can take that data and become better faster. For people who say it's hard to find that dot. That is because your presentation is poor and irons don't scream at you like red dots do when your bad.
Nobody beds a red door. It’s just an unnecessary and annoying piece of trash that gets in between you and your life. You gun might get tangled on your clothing with that stupid microwave on top.

Sorry your feelings got hurt 😂 The analogy is true, but it doesn't mean that we put anyone down. You are still more than welcome to ride a horse today (and a lot of people do) but none of them are arguing that a horse is faster than a car
Im far-sighted and the red-dot helps me out a ton.
Love that!
I have a astigmatism. Red Dots look like a star bursts. A chevron or even a circle dot in green works best for me.
Ever since I got my first red dot on a pistol I’ve put one on all my pistols with an optics cut haha. Great video
Love it!

I like the rugged design of irons but like fun factors of dots .
Fun factor is 100% a valid reason

100% will depend on your platform, but Night Fision does offer a good selction of different height irons.

Id love to try one against the ones I have

this is why we practice
Red dot on my duty gun. No red dot on my ccw
Not a bad setup 🤘
