...why, oh why is a mixed-race Irish/Jamaican (myself) moved every time when I hear Williamson sing ' Weep ye by Atholl '.. ..being mixed-race I always believe in singing the 'truth' .. and letting others hear that truth through song and words, which helps others digest reality, not created stories.. . Roy Williamson, one of the most underestimated Scotsman ever to exist, creates a legacy beyond the foundation of Scotland, to point to their new future, whatever the current British conservative party espouse in 2023.. The Corries, through Williamson and Browne, give/gave all a sense of their identity in every song the folk group The Corries wrote, imo!
ThePapsforshort. Thank you for your comments. This is one of R W's best, most heartfelt songs; I listen to it several times a week. Another heartfelt Williamson song is "The Massacre of Glencoe." As he sings, a viewer can tell by the expression on his face that he is affected by what the song describes
George and I worked on this song before it went to Roy, George had an amazing knack for writing what seemed ancient songs. Many nights spent at my mums house at Cardrona near Peebles. We sang it for the first time at a gig at Blair Athol Golf Club!
I can remember being at a corries concert at the Lyceum in Edinburgh, I'd be about 15 ... just loved these lads and still do.... memories of a simpler time.
Here are the lyrics to the song, in standard English: Oh, weep ye well, my dear, by Atholl Weep ye for our finest jewel Weep ye for our John, who battled By the Garry's deepest pool By the heights of Killiecrankie By the tears of morning dew Lay the broadswords of Culloden With the tartan and the blue Long we lay among the heather Gently sped the mist away Panting like the hounds of summer Waiting for the deer to slay By the drums of brave Dunbarton Rose the eagle, wild and free By the pibroch of Dundonald Rose the bonnets of Dundee Like a torrent down the mountain Swept the avalanche of steel Rose the wild cry of MacDonald Flashed the claymore of Lochiel By the red leaves of the summer Whirling by the Garry's pool Came the whirlwind over the heather Roaring like the flood at Yule Down the pass the leaves are swirling Down the glen, not in the gloom Where the redcoats now are burling In the Garry's bloody pool
Bloody Sassenachs! That's who dislikes pure talent & timeless song composition. The same folk who made you stitch your kilt intae troos! Whigs & southern parliamentarians.
Cheers big Dodie Weir! I love this track, god knows it took me ages to work out a simple version of it on Ukulele for myself. Somewhere between the lyrics & the tune......the original version always brings up the goosebumps on my arms.

Wow could have fooled me. Amazing work 😎
One of my favorites
This song is amazing! Mr. Weir's talent was very impressive.
Here are the lyrics to the song, in standard English:
Oh, weep ye well, my dear, by Atholl
Weep ye for our finest jewel
Weep ye for our John, who battled
By the Garry's deepest pool
By the heights of Killiecrankie
By the tears of morning dew
Lay the broadswords of Culloden
With the tartan and the blue
Long we lay among the heather
Gently sped the mist away
Panting like the hounds of summer
Waiting for the deer to slay
By the drums of brave Dunbarton
Rose the eagle, wild and free
By the pibroch of Dundonald
Rose the bonnets of Dundee
Like a torrent down the mountain
Swept the avalanche of steel
Rose the wild cry of MacDonald
Flashed the claymore of Lochiel
By the red leaves of the summer
Whirling by the Garry's pool
Came the whirlwind over the heather
Roaring like the flood at Yule
Down the pass the leaves are swirling
Down the glen, not in the gloom
Where the redcoats now are burling
In the Garry's bloody pool
Who could dislike this lovely song? Perhaps someone who does not agree with the sentiments expressed?
Bloody Sassenachs! That's who dislikes pure talent & timeless song composition. The same folk who made you stitch your kilt intae troos! Whigs & southern parliamentarians.
Roy wrote the music, George Weir wrote the words (if I remember correctly) - I agree, its an absolutely beautiful song!
Pam Walters: Roy could neither read nor write music.
Beautiful
found it! the lord be praised!
The 3rd stanza of the song describes the famous Highland Charge.
So beautiful.
