Okay, just stop for a second. The Kingdom of Scotland was founded by Cinaed Mac Ailpin, former King of Dal Riada and King of the Picts. he united the two into the Kingdom of Alba and over the centuries the two cultures merged into Scots' Gaelic "Brythonic Settlers" First off, the Brythonics had settled in the land they would call "Alt Cluit" and "Gododdin" before the Gaels had settled Dal Riada. The Picts at that point were just doing their own thing and infighting. The Brythonic kingdoms were destroyed in the region by the Kingdom of Northumbria, which in turn was destroyed by a man who I can't remember the name of whilst one of his relatives, Ivar the Boneless, fell upon the Kingdom of Alt Cluit that revolted from Northumbria (Basically the region that was Carrick, Strathclyde and Galloway), Ivar also conquered the Kingdom of Dal Riada and set up shop there. Eventually, Scottish culture came to those regions over time and FINALLY the norse conquered regions were absorbed into Scotland however by that point we'd lost Carlisle and England had conquered over half of Ireland and Wales. I skipped out a hell of a lot of history but you get the gist. The Gaelic language was predominant in the Lowlands until 1400 I believe, where the language lost a lot of it's following and was eventually phased out in law and administration by 1450.
***** What? Alba (Gaels and Picts) conquered Strathclyde (Brythonic settlers) and Northumbria ( Angle, Saxon, and Fresian settlers). All three became Scotland. It was Lowland Scots who were responsible for repelling England, and they were just as Saxon as the English were. Keep your Celtic obscurantism to yourself, Scots want none of it.
+Patrick J III McGuigan Celtic obscurantism at it's finest. You're either an ignorant yank, or an Irishman with with an inferiority complex. If you're Welsh don't even bother commenting, you're irrelevant.
The song is telling a story! Most traditional Irish and Scottish songs are recounting historical events that the English don't wish to be reminded of. Its in the past you say so move on! So was WW1 and 2 and yet your happy to relive those historical events. You don't like hearing songs that recount your black deeds..
Confusing comments on this video. The lyrics quite clearly are about maintaining the status quo because the cost of rebelling is too great and ít falls on everyone, not just those culpable. On the other hand, lots of people here are calling for independence. I want independence too, but let's not misunderstand the song!
Not to mention the fact that Jacobites are, by definition, absolute monarchists. I'd rather live in a republican Britain than a absolutist Scotland, though right now we obviously have neither.
There's nothing like coming upon a wonderful historical song and seeing it offer a home for bigotry. I'm English and I'm ashamed of much of what was done by the English in the past; similarly, it's not all innocence and romantic ideals amongst those the English 'suppressed'. One thing is most definitely in common - all these issues are those of the past and are only brought to the surface by those who are unhappy with peace. Live and let live and let religious and nationalist bigotry die.
I actually randomly turned on my turntable on the Thursday of the Referendum and I had Live At The Lyceum on from a few weeks before, and it was at this very song. Everyone thought it was very apropos. I'm in America for reference, and argued with the other local ancestrally scots-irish folk about how we'd all vote if we were there.
I'd think of all the good reasons to vote no, then I'd think that I have seen Culloden with my own eyes, and the feeling of death that hangs over the place, and I'd maybe flip a coin.
@3tangle3 There is. "Erin Go Brach - the Scottish version." "Johnny Cope, Ar ye wakin' yet", and many more, check Battlefield Band, Tannhill Weavers and Brian McNeill (my favorite)
Scots killing Scots over whether a Catholic of Protestant should rule the British (English, Scottish and Irish) Kingdom. This song mocks the Catholics.
The Jacobites probably would not recognise the modern United Kingdom (neither would the 'Hanoverians') but they would surely never recognise the multicultural republican "independent" Scotland the SNP pushes for.
@@zoomer_zveno i thought the Hanoverians came to the throne by dint of a scottish line of succession, so they were closer to being scottish than english?
@ogreoh I kind of agree with you there. As I said pox on both their houses. Just because someone points out 17thC Stuart flaws it doesn't mean they don't recognise 18thC Hanovarian flaws.
Great song and nobody does it better than the Corries, but I'd just like to correct the frequently held erroneous belief that the Jacobites were all Scots, because the truth is that there were many English Catholics who wanted to see a return of the Catholic Stuarts to the British throne, while the greater majority of lowland Scots were in favour of maintaining the Protestant Hanoverian succession.
viciouswolf1111 The lowlands were never dedicated to Scotland. They had their "wee bit grund" and the fear of losing that made them take the part of the London government.
I am the son of a Scotsman who was conscripted into the British Army. My Father was a Sergeant in the 1st Battalion, The Black Watch. His brother, my Uncle, was conscripted into the British Army. He was a Sergeant in the 5th Battalion, The Black Watch. He was captured at Caën by the SS Hitler Jugend. Their lives were sacrificed for the Westmonster Government. My Father was still a depressive when he died. His last words were "I can see all the boys" His friends who were slaughtered.
Of course. Same thing in my family. My own ancestor being shot as a deserter, because he refused to shoot at other unarmed "deserters." Read up about John Maclean and the songs, 'Ballad of John Maclean' and 'John Maclean March.'
Whereabouts in the Highlands? I'm fae Dunbar in East Lothian myself. Sorry if I was a bit condescending, but the Welsh have never given up. Look at Owain Glyndwr for example.

@USAsoldier1955 King Billy fought against the (mostly Catholic and re enforced by Scots Highlanders) Jacobites. Read up on the siege of Derry 1689 I think that was mostly Scots Jacobites against King Billy's orangemen backed by the dutch navy.
Edward also demanded not to be buried until Scotland was conquered, and he is yet to be buried. Your hero failed his ultimate goal a united Britain in his lifetime.
@USAsoldier1955 It is because the actual genetical input from these later invasions is surprisingly very low......but this depends on the area. Some parts of Western Wales and Western Ireland can have 95-98% of population being majority iberian 'pre celtic' settlers (celtic being an evolved european culture) with several later celtic invasions bringing their own genetic tint to the proceedings :D, and this can very between person to person, the actual difference is small however just potent

To the best of my knowledge they fought on the Jacobite's side, I have not researched or heard otherwise. Also, there is an ancestry connection with John O'Sullivan who was also on the Jacobite side. Remember, people of Glasgow, even Catholics, it was only the Scottish Catholic Highlanders who followed Charles Edward Stuart. Glasgow was proud to go with the British Army and many Glaswegians took part in the Highland Clearances. Simply the truth. I live in the North East of Scotland and we never took part on anything. Just sat on the fence. We still do.
+Joan Henry Glasgow was a rather small Presbyterian town until the Industrial Revolution, which changed its character rather dramatically. There was also a large influx of people from Ireland.
Remember it was not the people but the lords and ladies that cleared the highlands and lowlands of Scotland. That is why Scotland now has land owned by foriegners in tax havens.....started by Norman Robber knights stolen from the indiginous people of Scotland...Robert De Bruc......dont make me laugh !
I was thinking of Soutie or Sout Piel, which refers to the idea that British South Africans are associated with both Britain & South Africa & are therefore affected by the ocean in the middle (I won't translate it because it's a wee bit rude, but it's actually very similar to the English anyway). I don't really know if it's in common currency these days.
@ogreoh "James II strived for a kingdom with the peace to allow religions to develop" Actually James oppressed the Presbyterians in Scotland whilst his brother was on the throne and continued to do so whilst in office. He was eventually persuaded to moderate slightly but the idea that he wanted complete toleration for everyone is bunkum!

The Gaelic language was predominant in the Lowlands until 1400 I believe, where the language lost a lot of it's following and was eventually phased out in law and administration by 1450.
+Robbie Lobster
All true, but irrelevant to my comment.

What? Alba (Gaels and Picts) conquered Strathclyde (Brythonic settlers) and Northumbria ( Angle, Saxon, and Fresian settlers). All three became Scotland.
It was Lowland Scots who were responsible for repelling England, and they were just as Saxon as the English were.
Keep your Celtic obscurantism to yourself, Scots want none of it.
+Patrick J III McGuigan
Celtic obscurantism at it's finest.
You're either an ignorant yank, or an Irishman with with an inferiority complex.
If you're Welsh don't even bother commenting, you're irrelevant.

Beautiful
I wish! If they were to do that, I'd move to Scotland.
The most powerful version of this song ever made. Would love to hear it mixed with a big orchestral backing.
@@northwall9243 have listen to eddie reader's version if you haven't already.
This song is about the misery that violence and war inflict. So, again, "Are we no more wise than then?"

Independence; from Londonistan, and the Scottish _Kalergi_ Party.
@@deadsouls72 Aye Brother, Amen.
Not to mention the fact that Jacobites are, by definition, absolute monarchists. I'd rather live in a republican Britain than a absolutist Scotland, though right now we obviously have neither.
The Corries were/are Socialist/Republican...what a song this is.....
@9th Legion Listening again and here ye are big yin lol😉
There's nothing like coming upon a wonderful historical song and seeing it offer a home for bigotry. I'm English and I'm ashamed of much of what was done by the English in the past; similarly, it's not all innocence and romantic ideals amongst those the English 'suppressed'. One thing is most definitely in common - all these issues are those of the past and are only brought to the surface by those who are unhappy with peace. Live and let live and let religious and nationalist bigotry die.
wars are more and more about money but the religious and nationalist stuff are useful getting it going
Classic Corries once again. Linda, when will you be canonised?!? I;m about to search the thatch for my claymore!

Restoring the Stuart dynasty to power in Britain.
Scots killing Scots over whether a Catholic of Protestant should rule the British (English, Scottish and Irish) Kingdom. This song mocks the Catholics.
@rabnuds I don't think any of us should debate whether scotland will become independent - that's presumably what the referendum would decide
Corries on youtubes home page, amazing! Serch for Braes o Killiekrankie, best song ;)
Freedom for Scotland

You're right,,the truth hurts a lot
What truth? Scots made up 99% of those who actually fought. We're not going to mention the people too cowardly to actually fight for their cause.
The lowlands were heavily split. But Yorkshire had heavier Jacobite support than Dumfries. Still it was most certainly a north/south divide.
viciouswolf1111 The lowlands were never dedicated to Scotland. They had their "wee bit grund" and the fear of losing that made them take the part of the London government.
I call them "Border Gardners" ;-)
Now that's weird - I was just thinking of this song, didn't write anything on my computer, and now it is on my recommended. Does YT have the capability to read my thoughts?
Billy Bragg does a good Thatcherite version.

A comment on the Thatcherites song actually led me to this song.
Crikey can't we just enjoy the song!

The Clan MacLean was there and served bravely at Culloden.
On which side ? Many clans had members on both sides
To the best of my knowledge they fought on the Jacobite's side, I have not researched or heard otherwise. Also, there is an ancestry connection with John O'Sullivan who was also on the Jacobite side. But in truth, the way I choose to view the fight as one for freedom. Though, as complicated as the politics were then; others may view it very differently.
@remeclerk surely it's quite difficult to get mixed up between the SDP abd the SNP?
Soz just found that difficult to believe

@TheComradeRoss not exactly tbh, they weren't all cathlics many of them wanted the stuart family bck on the throne, or were forced to fight by clan chiefs

We still do.
not all the Highlanders were catholic lots were episcopalian n the free kirk and lowlanders fought on both sides
+Joan Henry charlies army was driven from Glasgow, by the provosts
+Joan Henry Glasgow was a rather small Presbyterian town until the Industrial Revolution, which changed its character rather dramatically. There was also a large influx of people from Ireland.
Our clan had no chief and split in two in the old '45
Remember it was not the people but the lords and ladies that cleared the highlands and lowlands of Scotland. That is why Scotland now has land owned by foriegners in tax havens.....started by Norman Robber knights stolen from the indiginous people of Scotland...Robert De Bruc......dont make me laugh !
I see a lot about Scottish independence here. Well, If you get it please take Newcastle. Closer to the scots than the Londoners...
The frontier should be Hadrian's Wall. England pinched a bit of Scotland at some stage.

@muzzawelsh I'm referring to the Scots in the sense of 'people who live in Scotland'
and you could dance to this
@ogreoh "James II strived for a kingdom with the peace to allow religions to develop" Actually James oppressed the Presbyterians in Scotland whilst his brother was on the throne and continued to do so whilst in office. He was eventually persuaded to moderate slightly but the idea that he wanted complete toleration for everyone is bunkum!
Amen!
@danonutube1 I don't know why the other poster brought the law into it. There is nothing unlawful or unconstitutional about the Nats holding an independence referendum - or people debating it. The UK govt has conceded that!
