    I can remember going to see Santa Claus in the little shed out side of Woolworth's in the Westminster Shopping Center. On a cold blistery day, standing in a line that stretched to the end of the shopping center. Then going to Sharon's Black Eagle, so my mom could get cards and little knick knacks for her students. Going with my dad to Grove's and O'Ferrel's auctions on the weekends. Riding sleds down the college hill. Getting ice cream at Baugher's or Hoffman's. Watching the fireworks at the Farm Museum. Too many memories.

    Having grown up here, I love this town more than any other place in the world. It used to be a place where you could keep your front door open during the summer. Let the breeze cool you down. You could hear the Firehouse bells ring every hour and half hour. Huge brown owls keeping watch over our house, hooting in the middle of the night, just to remind you there are there. Far enough away from the city, but close enough to drive. I can't imagine growing up anywhere else.

      Even as a visitor it is a very nice place, and we enjoy ourselves every time we get to visit. It seems especially fun in the autumn, but we enjoy it anytime.

      @@Realunitedstates Autumn in Westminster are exactly how you would expect, crisp, clean air, beautiful colors, walking on crisp leaves, listening to the wind sing through the woods behind my parents house. Memories were made there and they will be forever engrained in my life.

      It's getting a lot less safe as of late. Mostly due to people leaving Baltimore and bringing their issues with them

    Yes, I do recall being in Westminster, MD a few times when visiting with relatives from a smaller town a little south of there. The architecture is very distictive and pleasant. Thankfully your video stayed in the older areas of town with the great older structures. This brought back memories from a few years back. Thanks for the tour.

    • @Realunitedstates
      @Realunitedstates  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you enjoyed it! We try to show the most distinctive parts of any town we film. There's usually lots more to any town, but trying to cover it all would make the video unnecessarily long and be boring to the viewer.

      It is pretty typical for towns and cities to have or plant lots of trees along the streets. It's very pleasant, and it provides a lot of shade to both the buildings and the pedestrians along the street. Thanks!

    In its dimensions, proportions, architecture, street and plot layout, it resembles almost perfectly your typical town in the Lower Rhineland in Germany, or in Flanders (Belgium); looks like a place for a nondescript, quiet, non-city but also not-too-rural country life.

    • @Realunitedstates
      @Realunitedstates  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought so as well. It's difficult to show a significant portion of even a small town in a reasonable amount of time such that it will remain interesting in a video, but I think we captured the bulk of the center of the town. Thanks!

  • @AnnieThyme
    @AnnieThyme 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Looks like a really beautiful town. The mix of old frame, brick and then the stone building was nice to see. I enjoyed hearing a bit about the history of the town :) I guess some people have always had trouble with the main stream media eh? ;) Those stories are always interesting though. Because it really speaks to how much things can change while still having that core thing that goes back and never really does seem to be different in how those divisons happen. 😊

    • @Realunitedstates
      @Realunitedstates  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well I like to give a little context to a place when we film it. I think it makes the place a little more real when there is some information about the town and its history/culture. These are the things that make up the world around us. The town is just a non-descript place, but the events are the story.

      If you want to see the farm you need to email the people who currently manage it. Google Save Whittaker Chambers Farm. It's a non profit I guess you could say that over sees it, but they are the ones you need to touch base with. It's definitely worth it if you appreciate who he was and what he did.

      I'm not entirely certain how to respond to this. Bad and/or weird things can, and do, happen everywhere, but those things are the exception, not the rule. Don't live in fear because of a single, or even a few, incidents. I think that indeed I may make an episode dedicated to this very topic. Thanks for sharing.

      @@Realunitedstates I lived in Westminster from 1972 to 1991. The opiate crisis in Westminster is very well known, and widespread on many of the quaint streets you drove past in this video. It's a tragedy that hit many small towns throughout the country and Westminster had/has a strong reputation for sales of Heroin, especially.

      Well, this was shot on a Sunday, and is through the commercial district, so most of these places were closed at the time we were filming. I think that is largely the reason we got relatively uninhabited footage.
