YES - I do know that feeling. Shines are so hard - it is still a partner dance, to the song you are hearing, so the things I learned on youtube just ever seen to apply exactly. Not that i can remember them or perform them to speed. You are so right - they are gone. Ideally, you dance with him in a conversation where you are not led, but still together. Yessss! You perfectly described what I think shines (in social dancing) should be 😍. It's still a conversation where you react to each other and the music. Not just performing a sequence of steps you memorised. This too takes (a lot) of practice though. And having some steps or parts of steps (twists, taps etc) that you know by heart helps.
