I adore your work and I adore this tutorial! I run a LARP and I needed some quick makeup for orcs who don't have full masks so I followed this as a makeup test for them. The results are amazing. The advice you gave about how to apply the makeup and contour the skin made them look alive and not so flat/ makeup-smeared. Also I now swear by mehron paradise makeup. Thank you so much! You are so lovely!
This whole channel is heaven for LARP-ers like me who need good makeup and costumes, but also freedom of movement. Ginny really understands this because she’s a cosplayer.
I'm 2 minutes in and some reason just have to say. I don't think I have ever watched a makeup tutorial that I wanted to see. Till now maybe cause I'm a critter or this is just a awsome video. Or both.
Daniel Powers oh geez, well I’m flattered!! I love any video that shows a big transformation, personally, so I totally get it! Makeup, photo editing, drawing timelapses... 👌
thank you for this tutorial !! your jester really inspired me to finally make my own, and i adore some of the details you added (like the applique with sequins for her pink flowers + the flowers in her hair)! i was struggling a bit with figuring out the facepaint so this helps A TOOON. so super duper thank you for sharing your leetle bloo tiefling wisdom + protips !!!!!
I've been cosplaying for a couple of years now and I've used facepaint a lot but I've never really contoured it. This has inspired me to make my next cosplay jester! I have some stuff lying around that'll work for it and I will be referencing your videos a ton! Thanks for the awesome tutorial!
I'm in a Production makeup class and i learned you can actually make a spray called Pan Paint spray. It is a mixture of 99% Alcohol, Water and I think Glycerine. Its helps especially for stage and cosplay. It will not run until a long time wear. I love it. You could also just use 91-99% alcohol and it does the same thing (don't use near eyes obviously)
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU you are a lifesaver!! I'm going as Jester to Emerald City Comic Con and I'm so grateful for these tips, they help a TON!! You have her voice and mannerisms so spot on too, you're the besto pesto!
THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!! i 3D printed my horns and symbol of the Traveler and started making some pamphlets in Photoshop, but your cosplay and tutorial are what really kicked my butt in gear! YOU'RE AWESOME
thanks this is super helpful I've been working on doing a cosplay for my own tiefling bard with pink skin and I've never really done it before so watching this has given me some ideas
Hi Ginni, thank you for the makeup tutorial, I'm new to the cosplay scene, (where a face is shown at the very least) and am currently working on making Cadeuces Clay for my first Critical Role Cosplay. This gave me some ideas and inspiration. 😊
This is very useful! I was planning on cosplaying a character I made and this video is a great step towards the right direction Im going, so thank you! Also when you were putting on those gloves(the blue with silver-ish color nails) I was curious what those are if ya dont mind
this is kinda late but i’m pretty sure that they’re made out of tights? like you stitch around your hand in a pair of tights, cut them out and then flip them inside out and glue nails on! not 100% sure this is what ginny does but it’s what i’ve seen a lot of other people do so hopefully that helped!!
love the outfit! OMG the gloves freaked me out! They have nails on them! That's so cool, reminded me of the Keishin from Soul Eater putting on his skin. Creepy but cool
This is super helpful! I’m going to my very first convention soon, and I ran a quick makeup test today, using your tutorial. It went super well- until I realized that I was all out of makeup wipes… (it’s okay, I showered it off haha)
Not sure if this is helpful at all since this is an older video but using a criss cross motion as if weaving a basket while painting helps it not showing streaks and getting a nice, consistent layer. Also doing it in tiny circles instead of up and down the face. Amazing video! I love the blush on your Jester it really adds that childish glow she has.
I find it really interesting to listen to your normal voice because even though your Jester voice sounds just like Jester, your normal voice doesn't sound like Laura Bailey at all!
I mean, yeah! When I do my Jester voice, I'm intentionally imitating Laura Bailey. When I'm talking, I'm just... talking! It would be kind of weird if I sounded like her day-to-day 😜
You probably already heard this but try a loose translucent powder on top of the base makeup as it will help the powders blend a little more seamlessly. You can use it on top of the settings spray or under it but it creates a slip layer that the powders can adhere to a little better whereas the face paint might just soak it up. Especially around the eyes you can take a fluffy eye brush and loose powder and get that yummy smooth Smokey blend up there! I love your cosplay by the way, it’s so cute! I definitely came here first when considering my own jester cosplay. just giving some tips from a former MUA to enhance the LEWK!
Thank you for this tutorial! I had an epic failure trying to do one of my kids up with blue skin for a Hallowe'en costume and this is incredibly useful for next time, since they want to do cosplay of the same in an upcoming con. It's not even CR related but this helps across the board.
THANK YOU! You are my hero, I needed this so bad, last time I tired doing Jester I failed miserably and refused to even show my friends a photo of how crappy I looked
My god, I knew cosplay could be expensive but that was me only thinking about the outfit, didn't even consider the makeup. Holy shit, the amount of money you'd have to put in to it, you gotta be really passionate about it. I like to cosplay but im too broke for all the expensive, though I kinda want to do this cosplay even though im a dude. You made it seem super simple and easy
There are definitely some areas where cosplay can get expensive, but I also hate that so many people get scared away from it thinking that you need to spend a fortune on it! Cosplayers like Alyson Tabbitha (th-cam.com/users/AlysonTabbitha) can create CRAZY-accurate costumes out of mostly foam and posterboard - the more creative you get, the less you have to invest. For my Jester costume, half the fabrics I used were scraps that I already had. And while the makeup list is long, half of it is stuff I already own from previous cosplays or from daily makeup (primer, eyeliner and mascara, lashes, blush). I'm not gonna lie and say that some costumes don't get pricy, but if you're careful and do some research, you can absolutely cosplay on a budget.
I stg, I recognize you from somewhere but I dont know where haha But I reaaaally love this whole Jester make-up look, I feel like Jester's bubbly and happy personality shines through in both you and the make-up! Well done :D
Thank you! Wish I could help, but to be honest, I've been enough places on the internet over the last decade that there are a lot of options! (My work with Not Literally? My Arya Stark cosplay? My Harry Potter pin-up recreations? Do I just remind you of Maisie Williams? WHO KNOWS)
Internet is a whirlpool of things where I couldve known you from xD Once I find out, I'll let you know. For now, I think Imma bend a few bobbypins and practise those freckles!
Ohhh I also thought you looked familiar - I used to watch some Not Literally videos a few years ago. I´m quite bad at recognizing faces so I thought it was just a case of you looking similar to someone I watched videos from :-D
I am by no means a makeup expert or someone who even uses it a lot, but NYX has some colored mascaras (I believe the current name is Worth the Hype?) that come in dark blue. It's nice to use (a little hard to get off though...) and might be a nice touch under the fake lashes. I only say this because you said you hated the mascara XD Amazing makeup, by the way! You make a lovely Jester and you're an excellent cosplayer!
Tip from many many years of makeup and body paint; body paint activator. Tends to contain a bit of latex, so allergy warning. Keeps all water activated paint on through sweat, rain, and general moisture oh may encounter. I get mine from Kryolan and it does work with mehron paints. Did myself as a deer creature to comic con with it and no paint transferred from my hands the whole day, as well as did my friend up as pink diamond and no pink transferred to any white she had on her costume. Also a good setting spray on top of this pretty much guarantees a full day of color. (I recommend Nyx’s matte finish spray. It’s the longest lasting I’ve tried) The activator makes it a bit easier to layer paint so there’s that too ;)
Jester was my first ever cosplay experience, and while I'm pretty happy with how she turned out for Gen Con, I was too nervous to tackle body/face paint for the first time. I am looking to upgrade her for Emerald City Comic Con, and this is going to be a lifesaver! Thanks for sharing! (Probably going to use the affiliate link for the Mehron paint as well!)
I would love to cosplay Jester next time I have a chance to go to a convention. I'm not a big makeup gal, but this was very helpful and cool to see the process!
Hope You are Well :-) Wow, You make it look so easy but I'm sure it took a lot of trial & error but You've got it down to a science & Your Jester is Delightful. I must say once You put the first layer of blue on I was instantly reminded of Smurfette from the original cartoon 💙 Have a Wonderful day Ginny Di. Take Care & all My Best Wishes.
Damn the way you apply your mascara! I can barely touch my lashes with the brush Amazing tutorial, really good avice for face painting and will certainly use it to help practice my own
I am finally here in my timeline to get caught up with everything Critical Role! Only 2,5 years to go! (might take me about 3 months, I have no life) Thank you for the video!
Thanks! I was wondering how you did this, that's creative! I'm doing Deceptive Dracula with some co-worker friends at work tomorrow, so I have to pick out some makeup for my person, this helps a bit! :) She's actually going to have a paler blue skin because she's going to be a fanfic based out of Nightmare Before Christmas.
Sounds cool!! Mehron Paradise is very easy to mix colors with, so you might have some luck mixing the blue I use here with their white paint. Good luck!
I thought it was so funny when Sam mentioned those gloves, because cosplayers have been doing essentially that for so many years!! I'd definitely like to do more Critical Role cosplays, but I'm not sure which character I want to tackle next. We'll see!!
Hi! Thx for this video, I’ve watched a few times... and will again, I’m sure! Just a quick couple of questions about your ears and contacts... 1. Did you use a top coat of anything for the ears? If so, how does the makeup stay on with application, do you re-apply every wear? 2. Where did you get the contacts and how comfy are they? I’m a little hesitant to try them for the first time... 😳. Thank you!!
The makeup on the ears doesn't need any sealing - I just painted on the same makeup I use on my face and it has stayed fine through a dozen or more wears. Unfortunately I'm not comfortable recommending contact lenses anymore because I've seen WAY too many people damage their eyes purchasing contacts online and without a proper prescription. You should speak to your eye doctor about a recommendation for colored contacts!
Try using the sponge from the start, no brush. It'll prevent you from having go in a second time because with the sponge you'll get more coverage. At least that's what I always do. ;D
May be a little late to get a response, but where oh where did you get your body socks? Even just the gloves? Im working on a Nott cosplay at the moment and I'm about 3 or 4 attempts into making gloves myself... starting to think buying them may work best.
I have a question ! How do you take off all the makeup when your done ? Is there a certain makeup remover to use or just soap and water ? Awesome tutorial by the way You really brought jester to life !
I would love to see you and Laura dress as Jester. The perfect invoking of duplicity.
That would be the dream!!
Well what are you waiting for, tweet her! I even bet that Critters will back you up with GoFundme for travel expenses ;-)
Best idea ever!
Fastfoward to now, it has happened. Imagine that
@@Dinklewurthe Came here to say exactly that!!!

Anyone else imagining Jester learning to do her makeup with her mom?
"Now remember honey. It is all in the contours."
Ooh I haven't gotten to this part but which episode was it?
This is so cute omg
The pink blush and freckles really make this something special. Excellent final look!
Let’s just appreciate that Ginny Di is the reason every Jester cosplayer now has a distinct shade of blue paint :)
Now do the voiceover again in jester voice, that would just be perfect!
Don't worry, I have plenty more stuff planned in character as Jester! My priority with this video was to make it useful more than to make it funny!
