In Mouth Silence there are a ton of stealth references to Smash Mouth. 1. On the album cover, Neil's got his finger and his thumb in the shape of an L. Yes, I just quoted All Star lyrics. 2. If look at the metadata comments of the files, you'll see letters. Arrange the songs in alphabetical order and the letters read out "SO MUCH 2 DO SO MUCH 2 SEE". 3. The metadata says all the song files in the album were created the same day that All Star released. 4. In Wndrwll, during the silence before the backwards lyrics is an extremely quiet "some" from All Star. 5. In Piss, the beeping during the middle is morse code that translates to "SOME BODY ONCE TOLD ME". 6. In Transmission, the sequence of numbers in the middle is ASCII that translates to "SMASH MOUTH". 7. Tracks 1, 2, 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, 18, and 19 have what sounds like deep, bassy wind noises. Speed the noises up by about 1600x and you get a quiet rendition of All Star. IIRC the numbers in Numbers translates to something Smash Mouth related, but I can't remember right now and I'm about to fall asleep at my computer anyway so I can't take a look right now.

Glad that you mentioned how the "terrible" parts are all part of the experience. I would say that "Imma Let It Be" is probably more commentary than an actual attempt to make the songs work together, at the expense of Will.I.Am (and probably a subtle jab at "The Time"). That said, the drop around the last 50 seconds kicks ass.

Yo Anthony, just a small crediting error I noticed. You said when talking about the track "Furries", that Neil used ABC by the Jackson 5, when it was actually "I Want You Back".
Personal favorite moments: - Right after the Smash Mouth-Full House mashup when the music drops out and the vocals from Alanis Morrissette's "Ironic" come in and linger unaccompanied for a bit... and you realize it's in the same key as the Full House melody before... and you wonder if he has the audacity... and then yes, right at the chorus the sax comes back in while Alanis wails and Neil loops her gasp of "youuu" way longer than is comfortable just to extend the moment. - On the intro to Mouth Silence when the vocals first become recognizable as "Semi-Charmed Life" and then the instrumental bursts immediately into "I've Seen All Good People" by Yes, and Jon Anderson joins in the "doot doot doot" chorus across the gulf of decades. Also I think that "Sexual Lion King" is justified solely on the merit of the changed context of the "wake up, wake up, get up, get up" at the beginning. Though perhaps he could have left that part alone as an interlude.

Neil Cicierega is easily the most influential man on the internet. I've known this guy's work since I was like, 10. Honestly, it's actually insane how enduring this guy is.
4:52 During the last verse of All Star (somebody once asked "could I spare some change for gas") he extends the instrumentals at that section - they're usually shorter. Otherwise, I think you're right that no other adjustments were made.
i'm kind of sad that you didn't mention Mouth Sounds' No Credit Card and Vivid Memories turn to fantasies :I those seemed to be the best songs on on that album :/
Thank-you so much for reviewing this. As a dad who used to be totally into music, yours is a critical voice in cluing me in to things worth checking out. This made my day, for too many reasons to mention. Not only did I find out about this seriously not serious piece of work, but also, I got to hear you discuss it, which is always entertaining and informative.
My favorite tracks from these albums are "Mullet with Butterfly Wings", the Smashing Pumpkins/Loverboy mashup from Mouth Sounds and "What Is It", a War/Faith No More mashup from Mouth Silence.
This was the last thing I expected you to review. I loved this way too much. I'd love for you to do Breakmaster Cylinder's Remix Two: Short Attention Span Theater at som point but that seems highly unlikely.
yooo neat-O! THANK YOU FOR REVIEWING NEIL!! you should review Lemon Demon one day so more people can get to know it from you. I've been a super LD fan for yeeears and I think that his music has such a unique sound, clumsy magic and elegance that no one else has
Rollercloser and Numbers are flawless, literally flawless. The Modest Mouth is Also insane, completelly unexpected and the best opening mashup he could have had. It lliterally sets the tone for both records.
I am SO glad you did this Anthony! Neil is a super creative and innovative guy and I'm glad he's getting some attention outside of his Harry Poter thing. Some of his Lemon Demon work is pretty great as well
I like when you review something I've actually heard before, because then I can enjoy your presentation while also recognizing what you're talking about.
This is such a totally different take on Plunderphonics !!! I think Negativland would definitely get the humor in both of these albums. I downloaded them both and I'm in love, lmao. Thanks for suggesting Anthony !!!
These two records feel, to me at least, like a Weird Al polka medley in a slightly altered execution method and extended to the length of and album (especially because there's a handful of songs sampled by Neil, that Al also did use i his medleys). And that's absolutely awesome
I've yet to listen to these, but knowing Neil's creations (and now having watched your review, but mostly the former), I know I can only expect greatness.
4:20 it's not "its own original melody", it's actually the melody to kickstart Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" but done with the Smash Mouth "some" pitch-shifted to insanity. not to be a dick - i know this video is from 2014 - but i really think you should check out some more classical music when you afford the time to do so, there's some stellar classical stuff out there and not all of it is like super academic and serious stuff (i don't assume you think that but most people have this misconception and i feel very self-effacing recommending someone to check out some classical music as most people assume that kind of recommendation always oozes of at least some pretentiousness). that Mussorgsky piece for example is absolutely ethereal, blissful and gorgeous!
The Tears in Chocolate Rain track is, hands down, my absolute *FAVORITE* track between the two albums. Nobody else I know agrees, but I think it's incredible. I listen to it, not even ironically. Glad to see it focused on in your review!
These albums really are incredible, and you put just about all my thoughts about them perfectly into words. I actually came across you via your meme reviews (which you are also fucking incredible at, how you so completely distill internet humor is beyond me), but you're really good at this as well! Not that you need me to tell you that, with your 1.1m subs
my personal favorite is Mouth Silence’s mix of It’s The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine) from REM and We Didn’t Start The Fire from Billy Joel (aka Space Monkey Mafia). Idk what it is I just adore it.
What do ya think of "Vivid Memory's turn to fantasies"? That was one of my personal favorites from the two. I'm pumped beyond belief for the next Lemon Demon album thanks to the few single releases (Redesign your logo, Reganomics, and As your father I expressly forbid it) but I hope Neil keeps with the mash-ups as well. Nice review!
You totally sold me on this when this review came out. Still enjoying it to this day, I even covered the smash mouth/imagine song on an open mic evening
Hi Anthony, I noticed right @4:11 you said that the sample from All Star was used to create a unique, original, epic melody to kick the entire record off. If you meant that facetiously then please ignore this comment, but if not, then your statement is incorrect. That melody is actually not an original, it's the start of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, the first Promenade movement. The entire first minute and a half of "Mouth Sounds" is an arrangement of that piece, until you hear the Modest Mouse sample kick in. Just thought you'd like to know for accuracy.
I'm a little bummed that you didn't share your thoughts on "Best", my favorite track off of Mouth Silence. It has the most eclectic mix of samples (along with "Numbers"), not to mention the vocal scatting and synth riffs really drive the whole thing smoothly!
Best is my favorite as well. I used to hate that foo fighters song, but this remix is a beautiful insite to someone's personal life struggles and habits*
Aw, you didn't even mention the "Best" song on the Mouth Silence album. I admit there were some songs that didnt seem to resonate very well or were just TOO experimental, but a good number stuck with me and I keep singing the mashup version in my head now.
I'm so glad you were able to look past the youtube poop stuff. It's great that the albums are so unashamed of what they are and where they come from but god damn are some of these songs hard to share with people.
You may have heard this already, but the first song of mouth sounds "Promenade (Satellite Pictures at an Exhibition)" is actually from a british(i think) art exhibition program where they auction art pieces off, I don't know much about it, but I was linked a video of one of the episodes the other day and I was like "where the hell have I heard that song before" and it was this album haha
great albums. surprised a little bit you didn't mention the sort of nostalgia factor going on. neil's obviously pulling from his childhood, tons of 90's material. i could honestly see the possibility of some people just not "getting" it because they weren't from the same generation and don't have these songs/references/sounds embedded somewhere deep in their psyche, so it just sounds.... annoying. thanks for turning me onto this, mr. fantano
Hey Anthony. The melody at the beginning of Mouth Sounds created out of the 'Some' from All Star actually isn't original. Its the opening of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition! Check it out. Great review. Keep doing what you're doing.
Fantano, you, my friend, are the only person I've ever met whom I share similar musical opinions - although I primarily listen to rap - and I can't wait to check dis ish out. Thanks, -Nate
I'd like more Mouth albums, but I'd rather him release some of his own content, in the form of Lemon Demon, before he releases any more mashup albums; it has been 6 years since his last LP
Well Sexual Lion King as well as a lot of other tracks you talked about with Mouth Sounds are actually from Mouth Silence. But as for the analysis itself, great job man

Neil Cicierega is really talented but in a weird, unorthodox, vaguely dadaist way. I'd like to hear more from him.

These two records feel, to me at least, like a Weird Al polka medley in a slightly altered execution method and extended to the length of and album (especially because there's a handful of songs sampled by Neil, that Al also did use i his medleys). And that's absolutely awesome

Yo Anthony, just a small crediting error I noticed. You said when talking about the track "Furries", that Neil used ABC by the Jackson 5, when it was actually "I Want You Back".

He actually hid Smashmouth samples into Mouth Silence
If you speed up most of the tracks in Mouth Silence, you will find a very short sample from All Star that was played in the background so slowly, it was completely undetectable at normal speeds.
For instance, if you speed up Wndrwll very quickly, you will hear the iconic "SOME" from the first line of All Star hidden in it played quietly.

I love Cal Chuchesta
"I hope he doesn't stop."
Narrator: He didn't
Neil Cicierega is the only dude I've heard who could make a shitpost go triple platinum if given the right platform.
Neil Cicierega is easily the most influential man on the internet. I've known this guy's work since I was like, 10. Honestly, it's actually insane how enduring this guy is.
u still fan of him?
Fr he basically made the internet
Dude, how can Imma Let It Be be your least favorite? That shit is hilarious.
Isn't the instrumental used in "Pokemon" from "I Want You Back" and not "ABC"?
TM Excellent observation
That's the joke. The song's lyrics are "Oh baby, give me one more chance." All the while newscasters keep shitting on how evil Pokemon are.
The "Let it Be" part with Black Eyed Peas music in the background.. OMG I died .This is just too funny
4:52 During the last verse of All Star (somebody once asked "could I spare some change for gas") he extends the instrumentals at that section - they're usually shorter. Otherwise, I think you're right that no other adjustments were made.
Brand new mash-up song on Neil's Soundcloud! It's called "I Can't Enter That (No Sandman)" and it's hilarious.
Jason Sanders2 three new one! Bustin, Dear Dinosaur, and Smooth.
And then, comes the pieces of the new album.
i'm kind of sad that you didn't mention Mouth Sounds' No Credit Card and Vivid Memories turn to fantasies :I those seemed to be the best songs on on that album :/
Smooth Flow tambien!
torito statasus i liked the gritty sound of Melt Everyone
Vivid memories is absolutely astonishing
Thank-you so much for reviewing this. As a dad who used to be totally into music, yours is a critical voice in cluing me in to things worth checking out. This made my day, for too many reasons to mention. Not only did I find out about this seriously not serious piece of work, but also, I got to hear you discuss it, which is always entertaining and informative.
I've been listening to Mouth Sounds forever, and Vivid Memories Turn to Fantasy is by far the best.
I've loved you for quite some time and the fact that you gave this an honest review and praised Neil for his talents makes me love you even more
man, I love how much you dig these albums, they joy, it's infectious!
My favorite tracks from these albums are "Mullet with Butterfly Wings", the Smashing Pumpkins/Loverboy mashup from Mouth Sounds and "What Is It", a War/Faith No More mashup from Mouth Silence.
Somebody once told me
This was the last thing I expected you to review. I loved this way too much.
I'd love for you to do Breakmaster Cylinder's Remix Two: Short Attention Span Theater at som point but that seems highly unlikely.
Breakmaster is the best.
I agree fully.
Please consider giving Remix Two a listen, it's in the same ballpark that Mouth Sounds / Mount Silence play in.
I'd highly recommend it. Especially to people who love lasers.
watho That was crafty. I almost didn't get that reference.
i remember watching neil cicierega's animutations on newgrounds back in like 06' never thought he would have been releasing albums
yooo neat-O!
Just discovered this album on your your top 50 for 2014 list. Love it.
"I don't believe that anybody feels *feels* FEELS f-f-f- *FEELS* "
This was a really gripping review, by the way. I was interested the entire 15 minutes. And honestly, you rarely pull that off.
I didn't wake up this morning thinking I would end up hearing album of the year, but I did. Thank you for that.
First song of "Mouth Sounds" is actually "Promenade (Pictures at an Exhibition)" by Modest Musskorgsky.
I've yet to listen to these, but knowing Neil's creations (and now having watched your review, but mostly the former), I know I can only expect greatness.
unless I missed it you never mentioned "vivid memories turn to fantasies" which for me was a major highlight
i was really hoping he would describe the last song on mouth silence about drinking piss.
Mouth Sounds is one of the best things I've ever heard.
Honestly vivid memories turn to fantasies is one of my favorites
these albums are out of control. i cant stop listening to them
I grew up on newgrounds and lemon demon, it's nice to see him get some exposure.
Neil is a meme genius.
Thanks for choosing to review this. I love the CHOICE making
my personal favorite is Mouth Silence’s mix of It’s The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine) from REM and We Didn’t Start The Fire from Billy Joel (aka Space Monkey Mafia). Idk what it is I just adore it.
Was this perhaps the album that inspired the world renown genius Jon Sudano?
yea
I'd really appreciate it if, neil would remix this review
What do ya think of "Vivid Memory's turn to fantasies"? That was one of my personal favorites from the two. I'm pumped beyond belief for the next Lemon Demon album thanks to the few single releases (Redesign your logo, Reganomics, and As your father I expressly forbid it) but I hope Neil keeps with the mash-ups as well. Nice review!
My dad used to live next to neil..he was definitely always filming and a kid when i was over there lol
You totally sold me on this when this review came out. Still enjoying it to this day, I even covered the smash mouth/imagine song on an open mic evening
Hi Anthony,
I noticed right @4:11 you said that the sample from All Star was used to create a unique, original, epic melody to kick the entire record off.
Piss didn’t even get a mention smh
Thank you so much for this rec. What a triumph.
I loved every second of both albums. In fact, I was already listening to them when I happened upon this video.
The vocals don't necessarily always link up on their own, Neil does more beat mapping then pitch-shifting.
Mouth Sounds and Mouth Silence are by far the greatest comedy albums that I have ever heard.
I haven't had more fun listening to 2 albums yet this year. These albums may actually be my favorite releases of 2014.
Dude, you gave so many 8s. Is this year gonna be the hardest to pick for the end of year list?
Holy shit I've never seen you _this_ passionate about anything. Maybe I should give these albums a second listen!
You neglected to mention the Yes - Your Move and 3rd eye blind mashup. I was not expecting that and wow. My soul.
You may have heard this already, but the first song of mouth sounds "Promenade (Satellite Pictures at an Exhibition)" is actually from a british(i think) art exhibition program where they auction art pieces off, I don't know much about it, but I was linked a video of one of the episodes the other day and I was like "where the hell have I heard that song before" and it was this album haha
great albums. surprised a little bit you didn't mention the sort of nostalgia factor going on. neil's obviously pulling from his childhood, tons of 90's material. i could honestly see the possibility of some people just not "getting" it because they weren't from the same generation and don't have these songs/references/sounds embedded somewhere deep in their psyche, so it just sounds.... annoying. thanks for turning me onto this, mr. fantano
Anthony.....I cannot thank you enough for introducing me to this artist. His stuff is ABSOLUTELY INSANE.
Crocodile Chop...changed my LIFE.
"this sample is turned into its own unique original epic melody"
it's called Pictures at an Exhibition
Hey Anthony. The melody at the beginning of Mouth Sounds created out of the 'Some' from All Star actually isn't original. Its the opening of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition! Check it out.
Great review. Keep doing what you're doing.
Today day day day day day day day day day day day day
Dude, yes. I really appreciate how you articulate the art of these albums.
Fantano, you, my friend, are the only person I've ever met whom I share similar musical opinions - although I primarily listen to rap - and I can't wait to check dis ish out. Thanks,
-Nate
TheNeedleDrop actually did a review on this album.... Amazing.
I have listened to both of these albums way too much. they are just so, so, surprisingly good. I really hope he keeps making them.
I'd like more Mouth albums, but I'd rather him release some of his own content, in the form of Lemon Demon, before he releases any more mashup albums; it has been 6 years since his last LP
Sam Schwieterman He's been working on a "lemon demon double album" for quite some time now. He's already released many new songs on his Bandcamp page.
Well Sexual Lion King as well as a lot of other tracks you talked about with Mouth Sounds are actually from Mouth Silence. But as for the analysis itself, great job man
Thanks for these reviews. I'm going to check these albums out now.
Nice review! This is a ridiculously genius concoction.
