While the work may feel like irony, I think the true power behind Cicierega's music is sincerity. It's joyful. He finds the powerful joy and humor in every song, and makes it sublime. I would barely classify them as mashups, because they are so transformative, and absolutely shake the core being of the songs, and create something entirely new within the realm of our well-known/memetic zeitgeist.
Neil Cicierega is such a cultural powerhouse. He’s behind so much of the old internet stuff we all think about, it’s almost unreal. I love how Neil can do commentary like this in such a positive way. His Lemon Demon album Spirit Phone does such a good job of satirizing and analyzing the 80’s and the zeitgeist of 80’s nostalgia and the near constant sense of dread that pervaded the times (and our times, too). This video was great!
, if you like the Mouth Trilogy, or anything Neil has done, I super duper recommend Spirit Phone. Its an entire album of 80’s inspired modern pop original compositions by Neil Ciceriga and it Slaps so Hard.
I love this album dearly, and I could add something meaningful to this discussion, but instead I'll do what feels most appropriate and honest to this discussion: this isssssssss 可ぱぎ
These three albums actually are a good example of how the instrumental of a song can influence its meaning just as much as the lyrics. "Close to the Sun", for example: "Black Hole Sun", ex., was a weird, dreamlike, and even nihilistic song. "Close to You" was a sweethearted love song. Put together, the resulting mashup paints a picture of a woman mourning her dead husband, bittersweetly reminiscing of how she felt when she first fell in love with him. I think it's also worth mentioning just how much Neil pays attention to detail. Take this same track as an example. The first thing you hear, alongside the opening bars of the song, is the sound of a flock of crows. What's the first lyric of "Close to You" and, by proxy, this song? _Why do birds suddenly appear, every time you are near?_ There are many other, bigger examples I could use, but I want to finish sometime today, you know.
I went on a road trip to Texas last year when Mouth Moods had recently came out and I had my friends listen to it on our road trip. They are totally not part of the internet culture that understands vaporwave or mashup music, but they were so entertained and happy listening to the silly songs of Neils'. And also I love your vids that touch on the absolute weird! Your enthusiasm is so refreshing and I love hearing your thoughts on the weird!
Similar to your Daft Punk/Smash Mouth mashup experience, T.I.M.E. had me genuinely listening to the lyrics of Y.M.C.A. and actually learning what the song's lyrics about, instead of just blanking out for the verses and chanting along to the chorus as I did whenever I heard the original song.
At this point, i click on your videos because you are an amazing content creator and i enjoy watching your analysis and style play out on youtube. Not because I know who or what, Neil or Bustin' is.
This was a suggested video during an unintentional Lemon Demon nostalgia binge that was reigniting my dramatic crush on Neil from around 2009, and/but... I'm in love with this guy I've never even heard of before. Who is this physically beautiful, passionate, literate, positive human? Automatically subscribed.
I've been waiting for this video since it was announced! I hold the Mouth albums very close to my heart, and I've always been interested in hearing a true deep dive into them.
Your whole part about really listening to Smash Mouth for the first time and feeling like an asshole was my exact experience with T.I.M.E. Like, holy crap I never realized how emotionally powerful The Village People's lyrics were. I never thought about it because it's a fun dance song. Put the (beautifully performed, honestly) vocals over some Hans Zimmer and it's an eye-opening experience.
Whats crazy is that hes made songs that completely take out the meaning of one song and up it to 100. Crocodile Chop is straight up hilarious but now that you are just Listening to the lyrics you know how fucked up Chop Suey is and the jumpy dance song behind it just cranks up the meaning.
Really impressed. I love how this video not only finds the positive, but introduces people to Neil and Vaporwave in a fun and interesting way. This video is hilarious but really puts the focus on how and why we connect to things. Well done.
3:30 - Hey Nyx! Just wanted to say, I hadn't heard of Bustin' or Neil Cicierega before, but I was here for the _other_ reason someone might; because I like what you do. Keep it up! :)
I haven't been able to stop thinking about this video. "Smooth" is at once an entire understanding of Canadian culture from a non-Canadian and something that made me actually listen to the lyrics of a song I've been able to sing since 14 cause it was fast and funny to say you knew all the words and prove it now I wish I was Aquaman
One of Neil's songs, Redesign Your Logo, is one of my favorite songs. While it's not a mash up of his, I think it hits a lot of the same concepts you're talking about.
Do you have that jarring "Neil Cicierega" cue because you mispronounced his name during filming? I've pronounced his name as See-see-err-gah for years and nobody corrected me.
I think I watched this video either the day you released it, or the day after. But ever since, "Bustin" has been popping up in my head at the most random times. And I want to thank you for that, because I really needed all the little one-person dance parties "Bustin" has inspired over the second half of August. This video provided me one of the biggest mood-lighteners I've had in a time where lots of shit has been going bonkers. So, thank you so much, May. You've helped me stay cheerful and remember that there are things worth dancing for.
I LOVE NEIL! I LOVE MAY!!!! I love Neil’s music!!! I love May’s analysis!!!! This is the best, and I’m so happy to celebrate lots of things that I adore all in one video! You’re fantastic.
Love that you're branching out. You always have a fun and interesting way of viewing pop culture and am looking forward to what you decide to do next. You're awesome!
Your Smash Mouth revelation is pretty adorable and wonderful. I've been a Smash Mouth defender back in the day (cause I'm old enough to own a Smash Mouth cd) BECAUSE I actually listened to the lyrics to their songs like "Walking on the Sun" and couldn't help but think, "Wow. These are actually interesting lyrics."
Neil(that I don’t really like but fucking love any remix/cover of “his” songs)’s type of new genre is all about mixing two extremely incompatible ideas/moods and forcing them into elegant harmony. There is no song in the world I like more than 2 min 57 seconds of confusion by poolboy
This was a nice deconstruction on why I love Neil Cicierega so much, and as for that bit on listening to what Smash Mouth has to say, I remember being younger and hearing the line from Walking on the Sun after knowing the song for a while, and it was like I heard it for the first time ever.
This was a super thoughtful video, and I enjoyed it a ton! I've often had trouble putting these exact thoughts about Neil's music into words, so this vid is so perfect in that way. Keep up the awesome work!!
Love this video! Please do more like this! I had no idea that this kind of music existed as something of an established genre and I'm phsyched to check this guys work out :)
excited to hear your taking on more than just movies now! i've watched a bunch of your videos about movies i've never seen, and now one video about music i've never listened to, can't wait to hear you talk about other things i know nothing about! :)
I hope you dont stop talking about movies, but at the same time, I'd love more of your take on all of popculture, so i'm hella looking forward to it! Love you and keep doing things
This is really great, I love Neil and I look for music channels a lot on this site and there are only one or two good ones that talk about music in an engaging way and aren't just channels where they just review/describe an album to you. So it's always a treat when you talk about music stuff (love the hypnogogic pop video as well)
I actually was completely unaware of the term vaporwave but I always enjoy your videos. I'm so glad I clicked on it. This was great. I'm in full support of you talking about more topics than just movies. Keep up the good work. 👍
And it becomes a song called a song I actually enjoy listening to. Is. The most internet, hitchikers guide overdescriptive phrase that can only be described clearly in that manner thing ever. edit: and I love it
Neil has a way of taking what are usually ok-but-not-my-favorite songs and turning them into more than the sum of its parts. I don't care about Tubthumping or Semi-Charmed Life, but Piss is great! I'd sing along to Workin for the Weekend or BWBW if I heard them, but Mullet with Butterfly Wings has so much more impact just by switching the backing tracks. Even the unholy quilt of samples and trash that is Annoyed Grunt is so damn good.
Just for some historical perspective: It was 'postmodern' when Negativland did it in the '80s, too. Only they did it with physical tape and razor blades. Their 'U2' single is a highlight, though 'Helter Stupid' is worth the time, too.
I think it woulda been cool to incorporate a discussion of hip hop into this. Rappers have been doing sample culture and a reappropriation of pop culture in their music for decades at this point, and often in a more overtly political way than nerds on the internet. Still, I love this video and am really excited to see the changes in your channel!
I am fairly familiar with the way that that all works, but I also concede that I'm a white nerd on the internet and would probably do good to let those involved in the culture speak on it's behalf rather than me.
That is an excellent point, and I concede that I would have those same fears if I did this video. Just kind of an idle thought. Thank you for responding!
I've only recently discovered your channel but you're actually a really huge inspiration to me and I really wish I had a computer that was strong enough to edit on so I could do what you do
I love all your content but when you step out of talking about just films your content becomes VERY interesting. You have a knack for giving a ton of information while keeping it interesting. Keep up the good work girl :).
my favourite song from the Mouth albums is DEFINITELY 300MB. it's a bop, it makes you think, listening to it makes it feel like time has stopped for a moment and you're just stuck in the song... it's the whole package
I really enjoy vaporwave, and I adore your videos, so the fact that you covered this subject makes me super happy. Thank you for making my day brighter Nyx
Cool video! I'd like to see you do more stuff about music. Also was kinda confused that you thought Cicierega's music was vaporware but that was mostly clarified.
I've been meaning to check your channel out for a while and I'm glad I finally did, great video. I also love how Neil exposes how a piece of a song can obtain entirely new qualities when put in a different context, see T.I.M.E.
I think outside of vaporwave the closest cultural connection Cicierega has is probably the Everything Is Terrible-movies. They both share a similar complex relationship of irreverent humor and commentary on the source material, creating something more in depth than the sum of it's parts.
make sure to check out T.I.M.E. It's an EPIC Village People/Hans Zimmer Inception mash-up. If someone would have told me that this would work I never would have believed em. But oh boy ... how it works is magical.
The best part about Daft Mouth is that right after that verse about the crack epidemic it goes right back to the memeverse when it cuts straight to All Star. Just in case you forgot that you were listening to Smash Mouth.
I love Neil and these albums! I never thought about them very deeply, but this video made me want to! And you're right, I never thought about Smashmouth lyrics til I heard them through Neil's lens!
I actually recently started listening to Neil's music before this video. So I guess that was a weird coincidence. Also I agree with your statement on "daft mouth". I think it was favorite out of the "Mouth Sounds" album.
If you've never heard it, you should check out Plexure by John Oswald. He was one of the original people to do plunderphonics and Plexure is his magnum opus.
When I discovered Richard Cheese, I was overjoyed. I was obsessed with "louunge lizard" culture at the time. My Mom is a metalhead that tolerates what the radio wants to serve her. We had a beautiful moment that day. I hope that more families come together over Neil and his magically synergized tunes. 🤗💜
I know the premise of Neil Cicierega's mashups is humor, but it's also amazingly good music. I'm sure many have come to this conclusion. Why else would our lovely May make this video? Even so, I still feel like I need to say it. This is great music.
Will you do an episode on Outer Limits Recordings and Sam? He has tragically cut his own life short recently. He deserved the attention while he was alive, and should not be forgotten now. Hope you're okay.
Oh, it sounds like its more metamodern than postmodern. Ironic and sincere at the same time, "we're all the same underneath", not elitst. Those are some of the tenets of metamodernism, which is allegedly the stage we're transitioning into. I'm still trying to understand it myself lol, but it's interesting to read about.
Thank you for introducing me to this! It's just a shame I can't buy the album off of iTunes. (It's available for free on sound cloud if anyone is interested).
Yo, I think it's actually meta-modern rather than post-modern in how it's a direct response to the post-modern culture its based on and uses those ideas to get through to something more genuine
I think the term you're looking for is "Metamodern," which details how certain media presents itself in an ironic fashion and subverts common tropes as if it were Postmodern, but the underlying or sometimes even overt presentation of the media is genuine, not ironic.
The idea that not liking pop music = elitism kinda hurts my feelings. Just because large chunks of a genre doesn't speak to me emotionally doesn't mean that I look down on anyone for liking the stuff I'm not into.
It’s pretty easy to describe why Bustin’ is funny. Three words: freaky ghost bed.
Matrim42 not "freaky man baby"?
Sleep makes me feel good!
Six actually: I ain’t ‘fraid of no sleep
An invisible bed!
One word: Bustin'
While the work may feel like irony, I think the true power behind Cicierega's music is sincerity. It's joyful. He finds the powerful joy and humor in every song, and makes it sublime. I would barely classify them as mashups, because they are so transformative, and absolutely shake the core being of the songs, and create something entirely new within the realm of our well-known/memetic zeitgeist.
Yes absolutely!
Nyx Fears (which was your point anyway, but dang if I don't like using the word zietgeist)
The song Smooth makes me so happy. As do other songs to some degree. I could feel this in his music.
100%. IIRC Neil's said the only songs on these albums he's in any way cynical or critical of the artist for are the "Wonderwall" based songs.
Ellieescent
Memes will never die.

and it unironically keeps me up at night sometimes with the really creepy lyrics

Post-capitalism post-modern Dada. And if THAT doesn't make your head explode...
is it really dada though? I always thought Dada was supposed to have no point to it. The albums clearly have some sort of structure and purpose.
Love that you are here!!
If Neil Cicierega was Dada, then he'd be Stunt Rock
neil cicierga isnt dada
Post-meta

i wonder if neil truly knows what he has done to the internet. what a guy
I'm so glad someone finally broke down what really makes cicierega's music great, and I'm glad it was you! Great video!
This was a super thoughtful video, and I enjoyed it a ton! I've often had trouble putting these exact thoughts about Neil's music into words, so this vid is so perfect in that way. Keep up the awesome work!!

I actually was completely unaware of the term vaporwave but I always enjoy your videos. I'm so glad I clicked on it. This was great. I'm in full support of you talking about more topics than just movies. Keep up the good work. 👍
Dead on analysis. T.I.M.E. made me reconsider YMCA as a legitimate song with themes, which was a strange feeling
And it becomes a song called a song I actually enjoy listening to. Is. The most internet, hitchikers guide overdescriptive phrase that can only be described clearly in that manner thing ever.
edit: and I love it
I really love and appreciate your enthusiasm for the music. I might have to go check out Neil's albums.
This is a side I haven't considered about Neil's music. Thank you for making this video, it's helped me understand and love his music even more.
Neil has a way of taking what are usually ok-but-not-my-favorite songs and turning them into more than the sum of its parts. I don't care about Tubthumping or Semi-Charmed Life, but Piss is great! I didn't even realize he did music, I knew him from Potter Puppet Pals way back in the day! This is cool!

I've only recently discovered your channel but you're actually a really huge inspiration to me and I really wish I had a computer that was strong enough to edit on so I could do what you do
So it's okay to talk about Tyler Perry and not rap? That doesn't make sense
So happy about the new video! Love you Nyx
What did you call him originally? Trapezoid? Lemon Demon?
I love all your content but when you step out of talking about just films your content becomes VERY interesting. You have a knack for giving a ton of information while keeping it interesting. Keep up the good work girl :).
my favourite song from the Mouth albums is DEFINITELY 300MB. it's a bop, it makes you think, listening to it makes it feel like time has stopped for a moment and you're just stuck in the song... it's the whole package
I really enjoy vaporwave, and I adore your videos, so the fact that you covered this subject makes me super happy. Thank you for making my day brighter Nyx
Saw this in my recommendations and I'm commenting before watching because the title alone made me laugh and Neil is king of my heart
Love Love love this video and this album and you. This feels like my birthday! Nyx is made a vid about Neil!
First video I've seen of yours, love the enthusiasm c: keep it up bub
You were mispronouncing Neil Cicierega's name the entire video weren't you?.
Grammy Warned You.
AAAAHHH!!! I'm gonna love it if you start doing critical analysis of video games and music!!!
I think outside of vaporwave the closest cultural connection Cicierega has is probably the Everything Is Terrible-movies. They both share a similar complex relationship of irreverent humor and commentary on the source material, creating something more in depth than the sum of it's parts.
man i love neil cecierega and vaporwave...thank u for talking about both in one video!
make sure to check out T.I.M.E.
It's an EPIC Village People/Hans Zimmer Inception mash-up.
If someone would have told me that this would work I never would have believed em.
But oh boy ... how it works is magical.
this was super interesting - i'd never heard any of Neil's mashup stuff before. guess i know how im spending the rest of my day!
This gave me a mouth smile.
I loved this as much as I love Neil's music. Thanks for putting it into words so well.
Cicierega is a legend. Love your videos!
I love your set design. Good video
Love it when you disect random stuff Nyx 👌, deffinetly content that you should continue.
I actually recently started listening to Neil's music before this video. So I guess that was a weird coincidence. Also I agree with your statement on "daft mouth". I think it was favorite out of the "Mouth Sounds" album.
Neil is one of the most powerful content creators in any capacity
If you've never heard it, you should check out Plexure by John Oswald. He was one of the original people to do plunderphonics and Plexure is his magnum opus.
I didn't know Neil made music; I just know him for the Puppet Pals.
Spirit Phone and Mouth Moods his best albums. Just getting better and better, Niel.
I know the premise of Neil Cicierega's mashups is humor, but it's also amazingly good music. I'm sure many have come to this conclusion. Why else would our lovely May make this video? Even so, I still feel like I need to say it. This is great music.

Finally someone else who unironically likes Vaporwave
Thank you for making this!

I love this video! Tysm for making it!!
Nyx, I’m here because YOU’RE great. I had no idea who Neil Cicieriga is.
9:00 me playing Minecraft actually internalising the lyrics to walking on the sun
"Shit smash Mouth stood for stuff"
Thank you for this, I now have some more music to get caught up on
Check out his album Spirit Phone
Expand. Expand. Thanks so much for all your experiments and insights, Nyx...!
Also best wishes for the move!
An invisible bed.
Frea-ky ghost bed.
I didn't know who Cicierega was, but I've been enjoying his stuff since I was 10.
Heckin loved this!! Do more!!!!
Thank you for introducing me to this! It's just a shame I can't buy the album off of iTunes. (It's available for free on sound cloud if anyone is interested).
hey thanks for bringing this to my attention I'm having a lot of fun right now
Yo, I think it's actually meta-modern rather than post-modern in how it's a direct response to the post-modern culture its based on and uses those ideas to get through to something more genuine
Great video. Not too deep, but love the artist and your response to them.
Shut is, indeed, bananas
I think the term you're looking for is "Metamodern," which details how certain media presents itself in an ironic fashion and subverts common tropes as if it were Postmodern, but the underlying or sometimes even overt presentation of the media is genuine, not ironic.
The idea that not liking pop music = elitism kinda hurts my feelings. Just because large chunks of a genre doesn't speak to me emotionally doesn't mean that I look down on anyone for liking the stuff I'm not into.
welcome to being a music over-analyzer. its wonderful isnt it?
damn i learned so much and had a fun time learning. great job as always may!!
