    I'm 100+ lbs overweight. My time, money and effort are better spent on making myself lighter than my bike. I can eat less, save money AND make the total weight of me and my bike lighter - no upgrades can compete with that weight to cost benefit.

    You kinda skipped over the things other than yourself that are usually the heaviest. Crankset, wheels, cassette, and fork. Saving 200g on a cassette or cranks can be a bargain as $/g when you compare it to the price of silly Ti bolts and seatpost binders.
    I would love to see a video working up the $/g efficiency of upgrades say SLX/GX to affordable light options like E13 HelixR cassette or NextR cranks.

    • @ish474
      @ish474 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      xx1 cassette is worth the price (on sale) due to the unsprung mass. GX is fine everywhere else.

    Now, be honest, can you measure any of the weight saving on the course? To my eye (and I'm now in my 10th season of XC racing) those let's say 200 grams saved make noticible difference only in your wallet 😅 - if it really made a big difference, why would pretty much everyone in the World Cup field race on full-sus instead of 1.5kg lighter hardtails?

    I don't XC, but have been waxing chains for 3 decades -- with PTFE and florinated wax no less --- I save the shavings from when I wax my skis and snowboards all winter and that goes on my bike chains early Spring and it seems to work for about 6 months... I re-wax my chain before early winter mud season.

    Center lock vs six bolt weight. I might not be wrong by saying that six bolt hub is heavier.

  • @xavierhulbert5849
    @xavierhulbert5849 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    Making your bike as light as possible doesn’t compensate anywhere near as much as making yourself as light as possible does. Losing weight and gaining fitness are the more reliable options, but there are other more extreme items like ears and pinkies that not only add weight, but also increase drag. Lopping them off can really be a weight savings!

    Not a pro or anything close, but if I were to get ceramic bearings, I'd prioritize freehub bearings over irrelevant and expensive oversized jockey wheels and stuff like that. Changing the bearings in my freehub to higher quality steel ones wasn't just a gimmick, it was definitely noticeable, specially on the descents.

    Unless you are at peak fitness, I'd save my money and work on myself rather than my bike. Of all the things mentioned, I'd get a power meter. Since I got my Quarq spider meter it has transformed my rides in terms of understanding how and where I'm putting down power, where I can / should do more, etc. As a data junky it has had more impact on my fitness and riding speed than any number of Ti bolts.

    • @josephlaidler3778
      @josephlaidler3778 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No, they're too stiff and as its mountain biking, they're not suitable as they catch all the sidewinds (which normally wouldn't be a problem) also the price of them (as carbon fibre) would be ridiculously high.
      In the past (90's I think) there were aero wheels which basically looked like TT wheels on MTB's and they weren't great.

    Why striping paint voids warranty? it does nothing to the frame integrity.

    • @DrCrispycross
      @DrCrispycross 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s not quite that simple. If all you did was remove the paint, you’d be right but there are things you could do that could compromise the frame’s integrity. Chemical stripping can attack a carbon/epoxy frame if you do it wrong, mechanical methods like sanding or shotblasting can remove frame material and aluminium frames can suffer badly from corrosion if you take off the paint. No manufacturer is going to offer warranty cover over something they cannot control.

  • @matthewkramer8613
    @matthewkramer8613 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    There are may good ideas here but right upgrades are very specific to each bike, rider, and primary use. I tend to evaluate grams saved to general cost for upgrades. Heaviest items tend to be the wheel set and drive train. But these also are the bigger costing items. XC traditionally did not include dropper posts which adds a good deal of weight. Dopper is sweet though if wieght is less a concern. Before getting tocrazy with upgrades, just make sure you are happy with the overall fit and the new changes dont mess this up.

  • @samharris82
    @samharris82 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The real “pro” tips are:
    (1) Brand new tires for every race
    (2) Brand new bottom bracket for every race with grease and seals removed to minimize friction
    (3) Brand new derailleur pulley wheels for every race
    (4) Brand new stripped chain for every race
    (5) A private mechanic to strip everything down and clean/service everything to perfection for every race
