    So there I was talking to fellow gear-nut and I looked around his place it was all this really boutique equipment. And I said "Did you see the Pete Thorn videos?" He sighed and said "Yeah.....that didn't help". But seriously : Your Videos are so helpful to all of us, thank you Pete! (and yeah I DO own a Carl Martin Plexi because of YOU!

    I totally agree with kids these days using too much gain, no one knows how to find a nice clean tone anymore! There's nothing like the feeling of walking into a guitar shop and have kids with the gain maxed trying to sweep pick! Quality work again Pete, you have the best demo videos on TH-cam and you're a super cool dude!

    Will be adding this to my board soon! My plan for this pedal is to run it into my el34 amp (not a Marshall) that is set to a lower gain setting and use the pedal to give me that Super Lead character. You're demo has shown me that this might be the perfect pedal to do that.

    Finally got around to seeing this demo .. I really like the lower gain tone of this pedal .. could use a boost pedal in front of it to kick it up for solo craziness !! But the basic tone of this sounds really good and with a clean boost you could work it nicely with single coils or humbuckers !! Great demo Pete .. I was a little late to this party ..haha

    You are a monster!! I have a request....could you explain to us the difference in types of od pedal? Like tube screamer....Klon.....ocd......plexitone....ect.....I don't know and I'd love to learn. Thanks for sharing and teaching us and your jams!!!

    • @PeteThorn
      @PeteThorn  9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +guitarlos g-los TS-types- mid forward, softer, overdrive, some bass attenuation going on, nice for BF Fender amps (because Fenders have a mid-scooped tone and lots of treble and bass so it's a perfect contrast). Think Stevie Ray Vaughn. Klon- also an OD, but can almost act like a clean boost. Also mid forward but less so than a TS type, way more "neutral". Just very natural- a "more" pedal. Takes your core amp tone and just beefs it up, giving you "more" of it. OCD- kind of like an 18 watt Marshall grind, in a pedal. Nice amp-ish overdrive. Plexitone- really a distortion, a harder edged gain pedal, best into a neutral clean tone (a tone with not too much bass or treble a flat clean sound will work best) that's quite clean. Ample bass (certainly no bass cut), sizzly top- much like a real plexi or early metal panel Marshall!

    FWIW, I own the original 120V large sized PlexiTone and I purchased the small format PlexiTone because I love the large one so much. I ended up selling the small format PT as it didn't compete (at all) with the large 120V. Some claim they sound the same but I found they didn't at all. I too was excited when they came out with a small chassis PT, but I was very disappointed compared to the big brother 120v model. Not saying the small format PT's are bad - Just pointing out that the small guy and the big guy were very different. Basically, the little guy sounded like a pedal and the big guy sounded like an amp. I am curious about this low gain guy. My dream would be that the normal crunch on the large 120V PT was this low gain style and the high gain channel on the 120V PT became what the normal crunch is now....but I know that's a dream!
    ...thanks for the great demos Pete and I am excited about the new Tim&Pete show!!!

    Hey Pete, would you mind doing a 2016 Pedalboard video of yours? I'm really interested in how you achieve these broad and thick sounds with your bands and live projects. I'm currently searching for input regard on more wet sounds for my band especially to complement my keyboarder, because if he goes off making broad space sounds the whole band sound collapses and falls back, so I want to get sounds that compliment that lack of broadness and keep the level of dynamics even if he switches to soloing.

    • @Taustavoima
      @Taustavoima 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Bob Boitt The Gain knob on high gain version is very sensitive so it can be very hard to set it to nice low gain settings. There is tons of gain on that one. I think a little too much even that I like high gain.

  • @ForViewingOnly
    @ForViewingOnly 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi Pete, not sure if you'll see this question on an older video, but with this pedal would I get the higher gain sounds of the previous Plexitone by using something like a Timmy pedal in front of it? Similarly, could I user the older high gain version to get the sound of the lower gain version by just turning the gain down? I'm confused about which one to get now :-)

  • @DPG-Guitar
    @DPG-Guitar 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Loved the demo and great playing. Not only demonstrates the product, I get ideas from the riffs and licks you come up with too.
    That piece of music when demonstrating the maxed out gain, was that something you came up with beforehand or was it done on the fly? It was a cool bit of rock.

    • @PeteThorn
      @PeteThorn  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Kind of both- thought of it, got the basic rough idea down and then just hit record and jammed it. That's sort of how I write- what you hear there is like an almost formed idea that I could refine a bit more, put drums and bass to, play a lead or melody over- and end up with one of the tracks that usually start my vids.

    • @DPG-Guitar

    Hi Pete.....your vids are amazing, because I"m not a tech guy and you explain things so people like me can get it....I presume you were playing thru the Bandmaster....do you think this is a pedal needed with vintage Marshalls like I play....I use an original Marshall Guv/nor for leads, a Reverend Drivetrain II when I really cut loose, and a Analogman modded TS9 for tamer leads and punchy rhythms....but mostly play straight thru....I've been using a '77 2204 A/B with a Handwired Vox AC30 (thank you very much) or a '71 Superlead...sometimes I go with a '91 JCM900 MK III...

  • @otokoboson
    @otokoboson 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    You're sending that through a Fender Bassman, the combo 410? At minute 4:39 your "clean" sound sounds amazing but it sounded like you where pushing the preamp a bit. What are your levels on the Bassman and are you jumping it? If you've already answered these questions I apologize in advance.

      Correction, at minute 4:29.

    • @PeteThorn
      @PeteThorn  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Mike Johnson the Bassman is a 66 head- in this vid I was running it into a 4-12" with greenbacks for the song at the beginning, and then into the Suhr reactive load box and Ownhammer IR of a greenback loaded 4-12" for the rest of the vid. The load and the cab are 8 ohms, and the amp has a 4 ohm out only- which makes the amp break up a bit sooner, not a lot of headroom. I had the amp on about 3.

    • @otokoboson
      @otokoboson 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Pete Thorn Awesome, thanks! I'm currently playing through a 96 Fender Deville 410 comb and the headroom on this thing is ginormous! I want to get to that "just about to break up" stage in the pre-amp without blowing everyone out when practicing and gigging. Outside of an attenuator, are there alternative solutions to lowering the head room of an amp without the sacrifice to tone? Thank you in advance!

    Great Vid as always, I also really enjoyed the video of you and Tim, two of my favourite players in one vid! I have a question btw, owning multiple guitars myself, how do you keep your strings fresh do you just use string conditioner or replace them very often? Personally I replace them every 3-4 weeks if I don't brake strings earlier. I always find it annoying to keep multiple guitars in shape to play whilst not using them all at the same time but still trying to keep them playable for when they need to be. How do you handle this problem?

I have that one (ordered it on the basis of your incredible demo) and it's amazing, but I wish it had a wee bit less hair. (Also the bass is insane on the one I've got. I play a 64 Bandmaster, and keep the bass at 5 for all pedals except this on; for this one I have to roll back the bass to 2 ½.)

      +Craig Martin Well, I'm not pete obviously but I always have thought Plexitone into a Blackface Fender ends up with a super big bottom and super bright top end. More so on the big version.... this one might fit you well imo

      +Victor Lee thanks man. I need to try this one at some point! Have you seen the demo of the new J Rockett 45? It might be a good fit for me as well.

      +Craig Martin I haven't but I've heard about it. I used to have Animal though which I liked as a boost but not much as a standalone.. had this clean blend (present in TS type circuits..) If 45 caliber is voiced like Animal but without the clean signal blend, then that sounds intriguing! I'm waiting for the new Friedman BE-OD though. In case I have to use a clean amp at a show, I'll be able to get a similar feel of my amp.
