If you’re headed to SDCC this year, although Wētā Workshop won’t have an official booth, Richard and a few of the crew will be there with some yet-to-be revealed collectibles in tow.
Richard Taylor and his brilliant Weta Workshop team is the reason why The Lord of the Rings was so amazing. Every design is believable. It's like watching ancient history times.
When you have been Knighted for your proficiency in what you do, you can confidently call yourself a success. When that proficiency is in something you love, and you have turned it into a means to make a living, you are teaching the whole world the best possible way to live :) Congratulations and respect to Sir Richard Taylor!
Out of everyone involved in the making of the Jackson ME films, Sir Richard might be the most entertaining and engaging to listen to talking about his work, just an absolute Kiwi treasure.
You didn't have to ask many questions during this terrific interview. Richard was so engaged and having fun talking about his work. You know he would've enjoyed taking more time. He's such a talented and warmhearted gentleman.
Went to Weta Unleashed in February. It is absolutely BRILLIANT - totally worth the money and amazing bang for your buck. Loads of LotR and Hobbit nuggets to see as well. An incredible couple of hours. Thank you Richard for the opportunity to share in this creativity - a truly astonishing gift to the people.
Not related to this video, but just in case you haven't heard, Bernard Hill (who played Theoden in the LOTR movies), passed away on Sunday, May 5th, at age 79.
Whenever you hear an Interviewee quote movie Gandalf by saying "keep it secret, keep it safe" (10:34 mark) you know every Lord of the Rings Fan is in their Happy Place ❤. Brilliant interview! I'm incredibly grateful to have been able to get a glimpse into the Magik of WETA. Thank you Matt!
One of my biggest dreams is to become a filmmaker. The idea was put in my head while watching the bts of Lotr and there’s a clip where Peter says that these bts videos are mainly to inspire others to go into the field and that’s when it stuck with me. If there’s one thing that I would do as a filmmaker is utilize miniatures. To me they bring such a larger sense of realism and make the movie feel more like an immersive experience. The amazing wizards at Weta that I got to see during those bts videos truly cemented that belief within me. Thank you Matt for sharing this with us!
Just keep in mind, the bts footage of the making of lotr, is a once in a lifetime thing. PURSUE YIUR DREAM. ABSOLUTELY. My cousin is an actor/filmmaker now. It CAN be done. Just don't expect things to pan out as you see in that bts footage. Your experiences are going to be different. Which is perfectly fine.
I love it! I love it! God you must have so much fun when you do this sort of stuff. Thank you for letting us Joe's and Jane's and in-between go on these trips with you, when we will 'never' set foot of that magical Island. We got to experience it through your eyes and those proud Kiwi eyes as well
I personally love these kind of videos seeing so many wonderful people with a passion for all things Tolkien. Would also love to see a video on Utomno/Angband in the future!
Ever since I was a small child and saw my first behind the scenes documentary on Jim Henson and his studio, I have been fascinated by everything from special effects to prop making etc. I suffer from mobility challenges, so unfortunately, I will probably never be able to visit Unleashed. But I was wondering if they have considered doing a virtual version so that people who aren't able to travel there could also experience this? Because it sounds AMAZING!
I love for Wes Ball to work with Weta Digital and Weta Workshop for his upcoming Legend of Zelda movie! Richard Taylor is such an interesting person and a genius! :)
Listening to all these interviews with the behind the scene talents. Could someone tell me abit how the animated film *war of the rohirrim* will look like? Confused if its a drawing type of film or live action? :)

To think this man is 64, he looks the same as he did 20+ years ago. Such an iconic voice, love the way he speaks. What a legend.

WETA = outstanding quality and devotion to their craft.
Richard Taylor has to be one of the nicest guys on the planet. What an absolute legend.

Absolutely, Richard is a delight to chat with! My favorite interviews are the ones where I throw out a question and they just go! :)

He has gone to join his fathers, unashamed in their mighty company. Hail Theoden King, Lord of the Riddermark. 😔
The horse master sure put on an unforgettable performance. That's sad news
Very sad. Awesome King Theoden
So proud of Richard Taylor and Tania Rodgers and all the amazing WETA teams.
Always a wonderful time when we get to hear Sir Richard Taylor talk about things!!

My wife could probably recognize his voice from the times I watch the LOTR appendices.
I’d love to meet Richard Taylor. What a great guy.
Love it! I grew up watching the Hercules series as well as Zena WP. Epic and I shall never forget them. ❤
Awesome interview, Sir Richard is truly one of a kind! Also, the amount of Labyrinth love coming from Weta these days makes my heart happy.
I didn't know Richard was Knighted! How wonderful 👍 I also didn't know about Unleashed. Thanks for sharing Matt! 🖖😁🤘🇨🇦🕊️

Richard is the best designer for lord of the rings, King Kong and other films he’s done .
Looks like Richard has The Ring.... he hasn't aged a day
Rip Theoden king 😢

Lets hope PJ brings back miniatures and 35mm film for the new film
If you want an example of a broad Kiwi accent; this gent delivers!
Wow!
They will be very busy working on Hunt for Gollum very soon!
Yay
It says something that perhaps the best looking film of the last years (the new Blade Runner) used a lot of miniatures.
Where’s that wizards pointing t-shirt from. I love it🤘
Our miniature team was very small......HA I see what he did there 😂😂😂
The fine line between creative rights and creative commons...🤔
I agree that Weta has a certain ✨️something something ✨️ and it should be guarded.
We should get Richard into the TH-cam Makers Secret Santa series!!
Epiccccc :)

to answer your question, I think Richards's Hair is 'peak Weta'

Bring back Tom Bombadil - with or without Hashberry!

I need to know when the fantasy film is coming out because it sounds like it would be good
Wow, he has not aged a day since LOTR days. Looks like he forged the One Ring for himself.
