Richard Harris talks about MacArthur Park and Jimmy Webb

The middle section of Richard Harris's definitive version of MacArthur Park became my anthem when I bought the single in 1968. The song is loved by millions of people. Harris said, "it is the story of my life." Here, in a section from my upcoming book Richard Harris Raising Hell and Reaching for Heaven, he talks about the battle he had with c composer Jimmy Webb who, according to Harris, didn't want him to record the song. This is not how Webb tells the tale, I hasten to add. Then again, my book shows that they both have vastly different memories of their relationship.

Thank you so very much, Joe! This interview with Harris explains a lot. I think he did a wonderful job with the song, in spite of a lot of detractors who just don't get the lyrics or like Harris's voice (and they're welcome to their Philistine opinions; we fans *know* better.)

I always thought he was one of the best actors of all time. Much better than most famous than him but certainly the best out of Ireland. He was also hell of a human being. Always forthright & adventurous.

I adore, simply adore, the middle section, as well. Moves me like no other bar of music. Just so unbelievably thrilling.
Does need a good actor. Glen did very well for a non-actor in his interpretation.
