    I'm thinking of a dyeable filament, which would have a dye dropper nozzle that feeds small drops of color onto the filament, based on the upcoming color being printed.

    I built a quad independent extruder machine, no you can't do infinite colors, obviously the limit is 4 outside of the tricks you mentioned, but I have no waste, the only penalty is time it takes to park and activate each tool, which is pretty quick -- about 10 seconds, for larger prints it only ads about 10-15% to the time total. I have also used it to do soluble supports, which is really great to print very complex models and use one of the tool heads to print the dense (100%) support layers with no separation layer as it's not needed, you get really clean prints since there is no penalty for printing on support. The other neat aspect is duplication mode as I had it 3 heads running simultaneously printing a bunch of duplicate parts, very useful.

    Great video as usual :) As you no doubt know, I've been messing with multi-colour print methods for a while now. I often try to implement different ways for people to experiment with. Some models are obviously suited better to certain methods, but no matter which method people use, I'm always excited to see more colour prints. I love seeing people's prints of my models even in single colour, but when they take the time to print off separate pieces, or do layer change or purges to really make it shine, it always blows me away :)

    • @welbot
      @welbot 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Blondie SL Hi! Unfortunately I'm not the right person to be asking about these things, as i only have a resin printer myself! I've just been making models that should be suitable for multi-colour printing since there's more and more people doing it these days.
      I often do different versions though since most printers can't do it all in one go. Where I can, I try to split my models in ways that they can be printed in single colour pieces, which can then be assembled afterwards. Sometimes ti's not really viable, so I do make all in one print style ones as well, but most of the machines that can do them, either need to purge the colour between changes, or some can partly purge by doing the transition while printing the infill (so t's not visible on the outside of the model)
      How it's actually done with the slicer etc though, I have absolutely no clue 😂
      Being a resin printer, I only have the option of one colour, and my slicer is completely custom to my printer, so I don't even have any experience with the common slicers users my most people.
      i have seen prints done with the QuadFusion and Diamond hot ends before, and they do look promising, but i'd imagine they likely would take quite a bit of tweaking and tinkering to get to know what will get good results. It's certainly something I'm interested in myself, but the ability to actually get my hands on one to start playing around is quite a way off at the moment.

    • @Ladmertechnologies
      @Ladmertechnologies 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Blondie SL If you have specific questions about the quadfusion don't hesitate to ask (I have one on the crane printer). It does work and yes it does require purging for sharp color changes (gradients don't require it). For setting up the prints Voxelizer 2 is the furthest along currently but you can also do it in Cura with plugins, S3D, or Slic3r PE.
      Only time will tell if mixing is a good idea or not versus the ink squirters or other methods. In either method there are additional things to pay attention to versus just single color printers. If you are a beginner, it's best to learn on a much cheaper printer that has less of these variables to complicate things.

    I've commented on your channel before, awesome job on your shows. I, just yesterday, hooked up with a DOBOT MOOZ 3. It is somewhat remarkable. I can swap colors and I can also BLEND colors. It's 3 bowden tubes loading into one print nozzle. What you do is you put in the percentage of each color and the height, in millimeters, to switch. So, example: I printed 100% orange for 5 mm, 100 Green for 5mm, and 100white for 5mm, then I ran 5mm of 30% Green, 35% Orange, 35% White, came out, as expected, light brown. AND it was perfect, no places in the print could I see any unmixed color variation, all a uniform light brown. Pretty impressive actually. Now the print bed is small 100x100x100 but it's headed and a delta so it's also very quick. Thought I would share.

    I always wondered if you could use some tecnology where one would use magenta, cyan, yellow, white and black and combine them at different rates to make the entire spectrum of colours.

    • @3dpprofessor
      @3dpprofessor  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      6:15 material Blending.
      I've worked a little with it since this video. Does it actually work? Kind of. But there's a lot of problems with it. The biggest is that material is not unidirectional, so you have to be constantly feeding every color, even just a little bit, or you get back pressure through the feed tubes causing a massive jam. Even if you're doing that it still sometimes jams. So you can't get a pure white or pure cyan etc. And even when it works you need to purge a lot per color and you can't do discreet color changes.
      It's a lot of work for a little bit of gain.

  • @BurninGems
    @BurninGems 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I forget the guys name, but at the 2017 MRRF, he had a multi-in nozzle setup on a delta and it blended the filament before the extrusion. So you didn't get that tooth paste look but instead got true blended colors. I think he was running 5 filaments and could have very little if any purge between color changes based on the formulas to mix. He did have some special hardware on that extruder, but i hope that makes it out to the real world done day.

  • @Ladmertechnologies
    @Ladmertechnologies 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I believe you've already checked it out, but in case you haven't there is a slicer designed for color called Voxelizer 2. It can handle the separate .stl flow you mentioned (just like s3d, slic3r pe, etc.) but it also can import more traditional color models via .obj and other formats that handle textures and/or vertex colors directly. If you are stuck with a single color .stl you can also import images to map on top of it for color. It's in a late beta state currently so not a finished project, but further along than anything else. This works for either mixing printers (diamond hotend, crane quad, etc.) or multi material systems (palette, prusa mmu, etc.). Any of the ink squirter printers generally have their own slicers but voxelizer is for the rest operating on normal gcode.

    • @3dpprofessor
      @3dpprofessor  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. And unfortunately I hit a few snags.
      The way I was doing it with Chibimals there were a lot of thin faces over top a surface, which didn't work because they were too thin. So the "correct" way of doing it would be to export it as a solid mesh, bring it into a program which can make the mesh bodies thicker and more printable, and the re-export it parted out, import it again, and add color data. Because right now there's no program that can do both color data and separate into parts.
      I still think the idea has merit, but it lacks implimentation.

This may be considered bad form, and if so I do apologize in advance, but here's some links to point people in the right direction concerning multi color prints.
    First up, the interview from Joel Telling (the 3D Printing Nerd) with the manufacturer of the Mosaic 2 line of products: th-cam.com/video/gd3FGrIDYn8/w-d-xo.html
    Next up, a link to the mosaic product information page: www.mosaicmfg.com/products/palette-2
    And lastly, a link to the Amazon.com listing for the Mosaic Palette 2: www.amazon.com/Mosaic-Palette-Multi-Material-3D-Printing/dp/B07HKM26XS/ref=sr_1_2?crid=1DT7YR7VXR2EZ&keywords=mosaic+palette+2&qid=1554427883&s=gateway&sprefix=mosaic+pale%2Caps%2C214&sr=8-2
    No money changed hands with these recommendations. They are simply well-built machines and are marvels of engineering. They can accommodate up to 4 rolls of filament at a time, and can even work with single-extruder systems. Different materials can also be combined together with the system. I consider that under the umbrella of multi material, same as any multi-headed 3D printer. It's just a different delivery method to get the nozzle to the print, but doesn't change the final result much.
      Of course took changing has the possibility of adding milling or engraving to your machine, making it truly multi-discipline, and that's super exciting. I don't know what I'd do with that possibility, but it's super exciting.
