Just seeing the water-stained tombs and the leaking ceiling is horrible. There's such beauty in this place, from the marble to the stained glass, and it's all just going to rot away. So sad.

    Wow, what a grand place. Mausoleums seem like a bad idea to me-too temporary. My grandparents are are in a mausoleum that isn’t technically abandoned but is maintained even worse than this place. It breaks my heart to see them in such a crummy place. Once it’s all said and done, they’ll end up spending more time in that dump than all the time they were alive.

  • @jeffsfleet
    @jeffsfleet 5 ปีที่แล้ว +27

    GREAT EXPLORE!! The staining that you are seeing on the walls might actually be bodily fluids leaking from the caskets. I like the idea of a mausoleum, but the idea of a building being maintained and still standing for all of eternity is a farce.

    • @meganlovesdogs
      @meganlovesdogs 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. Inside the empty crypts there didn’t seem to be much ventilation so without the airflow… the bodies kinda pop and the fluid will leak out if there isn’t proper drainage to pull it away from the front 😕

    • @tamarrajames3590
      @tamarrajames3590 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Elizabth Harris I suspect they actually want to restore more than remodel, but the lights would have to be left on because people still have to be able to visit their dead...and they paid good money for that privilege. I’m just not sure how new owners will make enough money since so much of it is already occupied.🖤🇨🇦

    • @elizabthharris6741
      @elizabthharris6741 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@tamarrajames3590 well, I know in some states they can resell mosuleum space after a certain amount of time if nobody contests it. So maybe that is the plan. Move the remains to the ground to resell the spaces...who knows.

    • @tamarrajames3590
      @tamarrajames3590 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Elizabth Harris It costs more for an actual land plot than for a space in a mausoleum unless the mausoleum is private. The only way they can move a body is if the plot is not fully paid for, or some construction company pays for the relocation of graves in an area where they want to build.
      It looked like they had some structural damage and leaking in this particular mausoleum, which is the company’s responsibility to repair and addressing a timely fashion. It would appear that they let this one go too far, and families began moving their dead to a different facility. There are likely some lawsuits regarding this situation, particularly around the vaults with rust stains on the marble from the leaks, and the unpleasant smell in the basement. No one wants to visit a relative under those conditions, and that is not what they paid for as a final resting place. It would be interesting to know the whole story on this place.🖤🇨🇦

    thanx for the tour - I've never visited a mausoleum before and this one was beautiful - all the attention to detail - its a shame it can't be preserved - but actually thats what you did - you preserved it before it got completely ruined over time! ♥

  • @debrandw246
    @debrandw246 5 ปีที่แล้ว +33

    If you smell odour you are smelling death. There is leakage and or the graves are not being maintaned. There is suppose to be a cooling air control system in place in a mosoleaum so this doesnt happen. If the air system is not working you will have odour. This is unbelievable. These plots were paid for. How can this happen? This should be illegal.
    Thanks for showing the video. Wish you could find out some details about it and do another video.

    I love this channel but please stop mislabeling locations as abandoned. This location is not and has never been abandoned. It's a working cemetery that fell into disrepair due to neglectful owners. It was sold and is currently being maintained and improved. Cemeteries often run on shoestring budgets because once a plot is sold there is no more money to be earned. Perpetual care does not mean eternal care. In most cases, it just means care in the years that a cemetery is active and after active years as long as funds remain. It's important to continue to make donations to the cemeteries you are using rather than paying for a plot and being done so that things like this do not happen.

      ABANDONED is a KEY word! When people(like me) want to see some abandoned places I just type it into the search and all the ABANDONED places pop up! It is a You Tube key word, plus if nobody is taking care of a place it is Abandoned I don't think many family members visit the place either!

    • @SuperMelrose1
      @SuperMelrose1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      I know what you mean. I think of abandoned as totally forgotten about. But the definition is deserted and/or cast off, so Linda is not wrong, Thrice, but your word usage is.

    • @TimsNew77
      @TimsNew77 5 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      If its fallen into disrepair due to neglectful owners then that is the definition of abandoned (legally). This cemetery is well known, and the state literally labeled it as abandoned and nearly prosecuted the owners until a deal was made to force them into selling it.

    • @BrendaFayRegister
      @BrendaFayRegister 5 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Why would anyone want to buy a Cemetery? Especially a huge marble building, housing corpses in caskets. Obviously there's no money to be made. It is upsetting to know these resting places aren't watched over and or protected. Like someone said previously, that people don't even want to take care of you alive, so why would We expect them to when we're dead. Good question. Sad!

You're criticizing people for acting in a way you agree with. You say why would people do this there's no money to be made. @AmericanExplorer 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    I was Jose California's video of this a couple of months ago. Unfortunately it looks like it has deteriorated more since he was there. The new owners may have had to suspend renovations and repairs because there may have been more damage than they knew about when they purchased it. There is no telling how extensive the roof leaks are and that may have caused a lot of hidden damage. That may be the reason for the foul smell on the bottom level. I really hope it can be fully repaired. It truly is a magnificent mausoleum like none I have ever seen. Very well done and respectful.

    Looks like a Catholic Mausoleum , but doesn't really appear to be "abandoned" . Maybe the upkeep has been compromised due to funds. Could be they had to stop because they need more money and plan to continue at some point once it is raised. Sometimes the families are asked to chip in and help. There are still people coming there and bringing flowers and the lights are still working. Families are still visiting their loved ones remains. They may not be staying long to pray and meditate as they did once, but times have changed. The furniture does seem unused for some time. According to the size and architecture they may have even held the "services" there for the deceased . Very beautiful mausoleum and I am happy to see there is no vandalism. Hopefully it will remain untouched by vandals and someone will continue to look after it and the remains of the dearly departed.

    This is yet another classic example that Mausoleums simply don't work. A tomb in the more prestigious areas of a mausoleum nearest to priceless works of art and near the stained glass windows sold for as much as $100k, and the costs for the semi-private family tombs are rumored to be in the $200k region. Yet the law that states that a minimum of 5% of the sale price must be set aside for 'perpetual endowment' of the mausoleum, meaning that 5% must be set aside and never profited from, used only for the maintenance of the building, has proved to be ineffectual. But with the hundreds of mausoleums all over the US that are falling apart and are no longer financially solvent, and, being in the 100 year old range in age, are about to come tumbling down. Particularly when the original builder/owners have passed away and bequeathed it to heirs who have absolutely no interest in owning a mausoleum! They spend the money and in a short time old buildings require a lot of maintenance! Heck, unless you're talking about building the Notre Dame or a Royal Palace or the White House or something ... buildings WILL fall into disrepair quite quickly! So placing dead bodies into the walls of buildings that we KNOW by sheer logic that will only last in good condition for around 100 years IS NOT A GOOD IDEA! Besides, when people are raping this planet for up to a hundred years during their own lifetime themselves, I really think it's their DUTY to give something back to the planet when they no longer require their body! The LEAST they can do is commit their earthly remains to the ground in an unembalmed state, and to be wrapped simply in a shroud or environmentally friendly container - like ... a rigid, biodegradable type of cardboard box that canñ break down easily. It's a far better option than all these fancy metal coffins!!! WHY are people so afraid of decomposition when THEY ARE DEAD????? Where to put all these millions of embalmed bodies each and every year has become a real problem .. the formaldehyde in embalming fluid is a known toxic carcinogen and a billion gallons of it is leaching out of dead bodies and into the soil and the water table each and every year, whilst grave liners, and concrete vaults, and ridiculous metal caskets and even embalming - are all designed to protect your deceased loved ones ... BUT FROM WHAT???. Mausoleums obviously don't work, and embalmed bodies are destroying our environment ... and I believe that a return to the old ways of burial and the way things used to be done before embalming gained popularity with the development of the modern funeral industry is well overdue. In many countries overcrowded cemeteries are such a huge problem that graves are only rented for 4-5 years! (4 years only in Guatemala! 5 years in the Philippines and many others!) In countries like Germany they are currently buried for up to 20 years, which has recently been reduced from 25 years due to the increasing demands for burial spaces! However, I am of the understanding that you can choose to pay (large sums of money, of course!) to keep your loved ones buried in all of these countries, but most choose to spend that money on the living,particularly in poorer countries like Guatemala and Philippines where for those who can't afford ongoing cemetery fees it is best to say your final goodbyes at the original burial and funeral, because to see your loved one's bones being dug up or handed to you in a plastic bag after only 5 years when bits of decomposed flesh are still clinging to them is truly most unpleasant ... and unfortunately I witnessed many of these 'grave evictions' during my years in that beautiful but poverty stricken country. When these bodies are evicted for non payment of further fees the bones can be collected by the family for a small fee but even this is too much money which is best spent on the living. So they go to an ossuary (communal pile of bones). In some countries like Greece they go to the charnel house (where the bones are incinerated), and so burial places are used and re-used over and over and over again. In yet other cultures the exhumation of a family plot takes place every time a new body has to be buried! The family must dig out the last burial which is placed into a coffin liner and then these bundles of the remains of each previous burial is returned to the grave along with the newest person to be buried. But no matter how 'normal' it may be for these culture to exhume their loved ones, the process of actually doing it, and being confronted with the remains of mum, or dad, grandma, grandpa - or of a small child - it never gets easier. They are gruesome sights and smells, and I hope to never see another exhumation or grave eviction. And that's the problem about to overwhelm America as hundreds of these mausoleums reach an age where maintaining the buildings is no longer financially viable. It's not right to disturb their supposed 'eternal peace', but they all have to be buried after all!!

    • @elizabethwhiteoak5291
      @elizabethwhiteoak5291 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Lars-Eric Magnusson
      Oh, it's MUCH worse in places like Guatemala and the Philippines where there's just rows and rows of cheaply poured concrete outdoor mausoleums stacked 10 graves high ... and when their 4/5 yrs are up they just pull their coffins out of the wall and smash up the coffin while the bodies get shoved in a bag, even though they're still decomposing. Children who live in the cemeteries then play with the bones and and spread them all over the place too, and meanwhile workers have to evict non payers from their graves ... it's MUCH worse than being in a lovely marble lined building!

      I'm to be cremated its really the only sanitary way to dispose of a dead body and put ashes in the ground . I hated to think of being in a box for decades only to pollute the world for other generations to come ..

      @elizabethwhiteoak5291 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Lars-Eric Magnusson
      Alkaline Hydrolysis is now available in my country, not far from where I live. It's actually just water, and achieves the exact same product as cremation - known as aquamation - but without the huge gas bill and environmentally unfriendly costs of cremation. I think it's the way of the future for its portability (all that's needed once you have the machine is water and a power point), and it only takes 45 minutes. And no grave evictions, no children playing with your bones. But once any of these modern methods of disposal takes place, including cremation, your ashes or cremains no longer contain ANY fertilizer for plants. Nothing at all. In fact, they'll probably kill a rose bush, not fertilise it!!

      They do that in France as well, we have a Friend who is French, and she told us the story of how she was informed by the Cemetery where her Father was buried in France of coarse, that his 10 years was up and she had to come get his body, well by this time she was living in the US and had to go back to France and get her Fathers body back, she said she remembered crying a lot, she was reliving his funeral all over again, and she was the only one left alive in her family to take on this task, and she mentioned if she was not there to carry this out the state then disposes of the body by there means, needless to say she did not have the money to put him anywhere else and just had him cremated, but I agree there will become an issue in this country where to bury your loved one, I believe they will go back to the old ways and if you own property you will be able to bury your loved one on your own land, or implement mandatory cremation dependent on the Geographic area of the Country, like the east coast for instances I can attest that on LI NY they are running out of land to bury the dead, it's an Island not much land, even the VA Cemeteries are running out of land, so yes I can see all this coming to be, and it's true it is not financially feasible, the coasts to up keep these places is astronomical and eventually the money stops coming in, then what? well then we have urban explorers taping more abandoned cemeteries and Mausoleums.

  • @christineroussin1177

    It would be very expensive to actually close this building completely. The bodies cannot stay unattended so the owners of the business would be responsible to move the remains to a new location. Some of the crypts are empty most likely because the family were seeing what was happening & chose to put their family member somewhere else. Cremation is my choice...

    It was astonishing to see a mausoleum as well appointed and occupied as this in such a state of disrepair. I’m thinking that they cannot legally cut the power as long as there are remains still in there. The gates and fixtures are stunning, and the statuary and stained glass are top quality, clearly something has gone wrong with the structure to result in its being abandoned like this. I suspect they can’t remove any of the decor either, as people clearly paid a lot to house their loved ones there. I noticed a Masonic wing as well, one is forced to wonder when this was built...as the majority of its spaces are or were filled. The architecture is amazing there, it just seems so odd for such a place not to be up-kept properly. What chance does a joe public have that his tomb will forever be taken care of ? Nope no Mausoleum for me !

    So cool and kinda heartbreaking for some reasons. Hopefully this place will be restored and maintained so people with the loved ones entombed there could still visit them. I love the statues and stained glass. Great video, Robb!

    Find a Grave says there are 9 famous people in this cemetery, including an actor who was on Wonder Woman (my favorite). It also states that the entire cemetery is run down & is on the endangered historic sites & the mausoleum (in 2014) is to be locked with only relatives able to get the key from the groundskeeper. Technically, it is not abandoned, it is just not being taken care of & it should be locked with all that marble, iron, etc, to prevent people from vandalizing/stealing. If the families arent suing, I would be very surprised.
    I grew up in a cemetery, my dad was caretaker, digger, memorial designer/maker & setter in a cemetery, we lived in the apartment over the showroom. I was always out there with him in the backhoe & am quite comfortable in cemeteries. I am also a graver, meaning I go to cemeteries, photograph & document them. If any of those crypts that are unsealed contain a 'leaking' coffin, fluids will seep out & smell. Im not sure if that is what you was smelling but it could be that & you really shouldnt be around it if that is indeed what it is.

      ...and over 600 veterans are buried there, some dating back to the Revolutionary War

      Yes, medical person here. Billions of gases build up& bodies explode inside sometimes the casket will break apart, especially if it made of wood. Other metals can leak or the lid pop up from the gaseous pressures. You should be wearing a respirator mask& gloves. Ty this was awesome; u were most respectful. Sure hope it gets restored

    Not abandoned. Probably in transition. 👍often when a building is in question people do panic who own the graves (family), and secure something more certain. My family owns plots , if the cemetery goes belly up we as well as all the others could leave our loved ones in their resting places as we own the property. As times change and the family dynamics differ with culture less and less people honor their dead and have them cremated. Cremation although cheap leaves no legacy for a family. The decline of profit and maintenance costs although a great opportunity for philanthropy, leaves this type of space redundant. Yes, beautiful. I’ve seen them totally Dilapidated with some people’s loved ones still there. Cities often step forward and shoulder the costs of restoration or relocation. So sad ☹️

      Eh, you may want to look into that assumption that you actually own the plot of land... Maybe in a rural area it's pretty safe, but it takes minimal legal maneuvers to "evict" remains when the location attracts commercial real estate investors.

      Cremation doesn't mean the ashes have to be scattered. They can be buried in an urn in the ground, or interned in a kind of mausoleum known as a columbarium.
      In fact, I always thought American-style mausoleums held cremated remains behind the walls, not full bodies.
