Since white loves small creatures and creature tokens, there should be a whole suite of slightly overcosted cards that do similar things to all the other colors, but have convoke. You could print a couple versions of Harmonize and Divination that have a high number of white pips and then give them convoke to make it fully owned by white. That sounds to me like a really good and wide open design space that is not being taken advantage of.

@Corey Inokuchi so now look to the budget alternatives in each color. Green has growing rites...tithe has....cricket. you can replace the powerful cards in the other colors with options that do the same thing, and many options. Ramp in green...endless options. Card Draw in every color....also tons. White has one or two decent options for each thing and they may not be reserve list prices but they also aren't true budget friendly either. Esper sentinel I own like 2 copies of. I have WAY more decks that could run it but it's too costly. Same with tithe, archivist and whatever. They need less powerful versions that are in a surplus and stay low cost. Give white some good C/UC cards that do these things, not making every good white card the chase card of the set.

In my opinion, white did get somewhat support, but I feel like most of these cards are somewhat nish and some are like "catch up" with other colors especially green. So if the other players aren't really ahead or playing green it doest really help too much. Same with draw card the opponent needs to being ahead with card engine in. The cleric one I feel like it's good against groups with soo many tutor or green with alot land search.

@@GONZUdAce11 idk but it never felt like a huge downside to play these. Lotus vale, Lotus Field and scorched Ruins especially are super powerful as long as you are not in a meta where people blow up lands that make mana. Getting the lands into your graveyard does have some upside too. T3 Lotus Field into brought back for example gives you 8 mana on turn 4. Sure it's not as simple as playing a rampant growth but it offers some insane synergy with all of the white recursion.

I think you could lean heavily into the "group hug" concept for white. Give them a few amped up Secret Rendezvous style effects, as below:
1WW Instant: Draw 3 cards. Target opponent draws a card.
WWW Enchantment: Whenever a creature you control deals combat damage to a player, you may prevent that damage and draw a card.
7WW Legendary Artifact: This spell costs X less to cast, where X is the amount of life you have gained this turn. (T): Create two 1/1 soldier tokens with lifelink. Whenever a token creature you control deals combat damage to a player, all players may scry 1 and you draw a card.
1WW Sorcery: Search your library for up to three basic Plains cards, reveal them, and put one onto the battlefield tapped and the rest into your hand. Then shuffle. Target opponent may search their library for a basic land and put it into their hand, then shuffle.
White feels like a colour that thematically tries to make allies and helps others, whilst ensuring they always benefit slightly more than their "allies". It's also a fun style of play that feels different from the other colours, adding design space without limiting potential with other ideas.

Exactly. It’s getting better but very slowly. And pretty much every new card turns around lifegain and small creatures. It could be very good to see more diversity in the white arsenal. Why don’t we see prevent and redirect abilities nowadays in new white cards?

For me personally. I run white in everything. I also play mono white almost exclusively. I do have some decks that when I get the right cards at the right times I'm a huge threat. I would 60% of the time I'm behind or trying to play catch up. It would be nice to have better cards. Though, that's what makes mono white fun for me. Is finding that cards or ways to use the cards they have to the fullest. so are they catching up. Kind of, with so many hoops to jump through.

    3. Play Light Paws
    4. Cast Aura/Search an aura to protect Light Paws/in response, Light Paws Dies
    5. Repeat 1-4 until 1 of 2 things happens. Light Paws gets too expensive to rely upon, or, Light Paws gets huge, hits someone for 12+, someone board wipes then you proceed to repeat 1-4 again until #5 comes back up.

Oath of Lieges is one of my favorite white pairity/ramp cards. And I love how it combos well with Deep Gnome Terramancer - allowing you to ramp ahead while tempting your opponents with pairity ramp. It also combos well with Archivist of Oghma since Oath of Lieges is letting your opponents search their deck on each of their turns.
I would love to see a revisit to an Oath of Lieges style card for mono-white, something that trades value to your opponent in exchange for you also getting value. Say a permanent that lets your opponent tutor-up a basic land to play on their upkeep, but if they do, you can tutor a basic plains into play - it would basically be that Oath of Lieges + Deep Gnome Terramancer combo.

Feels like the issue is something like the lead devs play casual and have a mono white weenie aggro deck in their EDH playgroup, which crush them sometimes for some reasons.

My opinion of white is that’s it’s one of the best colors to pair with others, like BW or GW, the colors are usually good on their own but are made all the better when white is splashed in, namely when it comes to removal, white is hands down (at least to me) the best color for removal, Swords to Plowshares, Path to Exile, Return to Dust, Farewell, not to mention all of the hate auras like Darksteel Mutation and other similar cards to deal with commanders, white usually has an answer to get rid of almost anything, splashed into other colors it usually helps to fill in the gaps a lot

I think white has been getting better and better, and their main weakness is more or less alleviated as soon as you get another colour.

White likes to do things regarding large numbers of things working together. What about making white ramp centered around creature tokens, or number of creatures that share a type. Make use of Convoke, or reduce the cost by number of creatures that are white and share a type. These are just shotgunned ideas from the top. So many great ideas have been shared both in the podcast and in these comments. Come on, WOTC let's make White playable in commander!

  • @pyronicdesign

Mono white in commander may not be good. But white as a color is the most powerful support color.
One of the side effects of this is that anything you give white to help mono white will automatically boost any color combination with white. Thereby keeping monowhite in the same situation.
White does not just need ways to gain mana, or draw cards . It needs ways to do these things tgst sinergize with mono whites gameplan. Which is much more difficult to create.

I could see a sorcory, that says: choose a player with more cards in hand than you, draw cards equal to the difference.
Or an enchantment : whenever an opponent draws a card draw a card, this triggers only if that player has more cards in hand than you.
Except the good new cards beeing to expensive and the cards partially beeing to good/staply I think mono white has a lot going for it. You never miss a landdrop, can reanimate like every permanent, have powerful Boardwipes, removal, and edicts, make tons of tokens, can utilize equipment very well. Their is a lot going for it, plus angels.
A card that let's you catch up on creatures could be something like :
Choose target opponent, for each creature he/she controls create 2 1/1 soldiers, than for each creature you control, deal 1 damage to target creature or planeswalker(any target would be to broken).

I think white’s in a good place and is pretty good nowadays. It excels in dealing with any threat imaginable, it has plenty of land ramp, and has really good and consistent card draw engines when you’re focused on a specific strategy, like tokens or enchantments. There is some ridiculous value specifically in token decks. I will say that I think white should have a bit of a wider range in terms of archetypes, and WOTC could probably be a bit less safe with their design space of white cards, but as it stands, white’s not bad anymore.

Interesting discussion. Personally, I've been playing commander for about 3 years and I usually build decks at around $200 for a deck, and I only built my first ever mono white deck a few months ago.
I did a partner deck with Yoshimaru, Ever Faithful and Keleth, Sunmane Familiar. So it's designed to work around the limitations of white by focusing more on very high speed, protection, and continually building up my smaller creatures. I have a decent amount of card draw with cards like Welcoming Vampire, Sram Senior Artificer, Mangara the diplomat, and Teshar, ancestor's apostle. Plus of course artifacts like tome of legends and endless atlas. Is it the most powerful deck I own? Probably not. It does absolutely excel at 1v1 commander due to speed however. And for larger commander games it does pretty well and it's fun to play.
And white has some really cool individual cards like Worship, Michiko Konda truth seeker, and ravnica at war.

White has finally gotten some much needed attention that it should have gotten years ago. But there is still work to be done by Wizards. Mana catch up needs to be made more reliable as it really is the only way for white to ramp. It also still needs better card draw, 1 card (esper sentinel) doesn't make up for it. White also needs more effects unique to it as the other colors have been taking it's identity in the color pie with nothing to replace them. More rule effects would be good, tax effects, or maybe even stealing creatures you exile.

I play mono white and I had an idea that could be whites special way to have card draw . I was thinking maybe spells that sacrifice a land to draw cards make the pips of the spells have alot of white in them and have white cards that get lands back like their conquering the lands and it could be their special way to "ramp " and obtain card draw

Not a lot of mono white players out there. I ran two different mono white decks last night and one of the folks at the LGS made a negative comment about mono white. Giada got threatening and then I beat them with budget Elish Norn. lol
White still needs a lot of support when it comes to commander.

As a person who plays a lot of orzhov, imo white still hasn't caught up:
    1. The top white staples are all highly priced and don't have cheap alternatives, unlike the other colors where you can find a decent sub to a Deflecting Swat
    2. For every new white staple it feels like the other colors, especially green lately, receive 2+ better staples
    3. Many of the white staples can easily be used in other decks since most of the white staples have less than 2 white mana pips
Tl;dr and as someone pointed out, white has gotten some good pieces but it is still a better support color than on its own

I definitely think that monowhite needs more love, ideally without being autoinclude broken staples like Smothering Tide. It’s fine if white has weaknesses, but not if it doesn’t get strengths to compensate. And certain weaknesses are just too crippling. A lack of ramp is already putting it behind other colors, but that would at least be manageable if white actually had the ability to draw cards. Especially since white’s traditional strengths (cheap, efficient creatures, tokens, life gain, and buff spells) are not as useful in a format where everyone starts with 40 life, there are three other players, ubiquitous mana rocks, and more board wipes. And the lack of card draw doesn’t even make sense thematically: white may not be the color of knowledge, but it is the color of faith, and thus divine revelation. All the other colors get card draw; for blue it’s one of their main themes, for black they get tutors and losing life/sacrificing creatures in exchange for card draw, red gets impulse draw and looting effects, green gets stuff that grants card draw for playing/owning/dealing damage with creatures, in addition to some creature tutoring, and the vast majority of ramp spells in the game.
If they want to make monowhite card draw mechanically different from other colors, they could emphasize themes of visions from higher powers, dreams sent by gods to tell their chosen about the future, and prophecies found in holy books. This could use the scry mechanic, linked to creatures or whatever, which already appears on some white cards, and would be destinct from the draw of other colors. Scrying would represent say, your commander having an angel/god appear before them to guide them, or having prophetic dreams about an imminent threat, or finding Ancient prophecies in their holy books. Linking it creatures being tapped, or having a certain number of clerics/angels/spirits in play, or something like that.
Ramp could also be safely given to white, since at this point every color except for sometimes blue gets ramp of some kind. Linking ramp to tapped creatures to represent creatures generating mana via prayer, or when certain creatures die, to represent martyrdom. Maybe give enchantment-based ramp, since white tends to be the color of enchantments already.

For ramp, pips in the cost is not the only way to keep multicolor decks from wanting these effects. I like that most of the ramp effects specifically care about plains and not just any basic lands.
And Secret Rendezvous is card DISadvantage.

White's problem in card draw have not yet been solved. The only method in white to really draw is opponent dependant. All the new methods of card draw are opponent dependant. When I play Mono white I tend to have 3-5 cards each turn consistently but I never drew cards on MY own terms. Unless you go specific commanders such as Sram. That is the problem. Many times in a game you want to go "I really like to draw some more cards to get more options or find an answer to this threat" but in White that is not your choice. It is your opponents choice if you get to draw more cards or not.
Many times when we see cards "But it really depends on our opponent" they are flagged as bad in other colors. But in white they are praised. I understand thematically it is fitting but still do not resolved the fact that White needs to be able to draw cards on their own terms and start digging in the deck on your turn, and not on an opponents turn.

White historically has a lot of potentially powerful mechanics. The main issue is that Wizards has dropped those mechanics, or effectively debuffed them, rather than including them in the power creep that other colours have benefitted from.
    Examples:
Lifelink - Useless vs mill, infinite damage, infect, commander damage, and win/lose the game effects.
Damage reduction/prevention - Only reprinted on single-use cards. Need to incorporate this into permanents, and allow it to scale up.
Protection - Rarely reprinted. We need a legendary Grandmother of Runes.
Indestructible - Is now often only a temporary effect, and other colours have received plenty of exile removal.
Rebirth - Too often limited to low power targets. Make this scale. Celestine is a good start.
Enchantment Rebirth - Rarely ever reprinted. Create alternative effects when an aura would be put into a graveyard.
Blocking triggers - Rarely ever reprinted. Synergizes well with Vigilance.
Flying - Less powerful than various unblockable options. Consider cards that buff flyers that block non-flyers.
Go Wide - White typically creates smaller, weaker token fields than other colours. It also has worse triggers to benefit from the field's creation.
Opponent's Cant ____ - Seems to have been deemed too 'unfun' to reprint, which has resulted in a huge nerf to white.
+1/+1 counters - The most boring thing you can do in magic is make 1/1 Tokens and put +1/+1 counters on them.
Would white benefit from card advantage and ramp? Sure. But many aspects of its core identity require some serious work, or any mono-white deck will simply feel and function like a green deck anyway.

At this point, treasure tokens are out of control. Dockside Extortionist, Smothering TIthe, and Old Gnawbone should be bannable. Goldspan Dragon less so, but could still be on that list. Storm-Kiln Artist, Pitiless Plunderer, Revel in Riches and Brass's Bounty are also in my personal list.
Really any that make a mass amount of treasure, or an infinite loop of treasure with another card, or a storm win. I've seen how they make the game shift dramatically from friendly to "we have to kill him now, or the game is over" in a second.

    • @k9commander
      @k9commander ปีที่แล้ว +1

They're more expensive because white doesn't have enough of them.
Take that blue foretell spell for example. Blue has dozens of draw spells. That foretell spell sucks in blue. Give it to white, and it would be cost over $10.
Supply and demand. Everyone demands good mono-colored draw spells. Blue has plenty of supply. White has a far more limited supply.

I have to slightly disagree that there is no card draw in white. They are more just taylored to do some of the things that white already does. sram or welcoming vampire, bernie bracks, losheel, mangra, puresteel paladin, wedding announcment, kor spirit dancer all do something that white already is known to do and in some of them it is not once per turn.

In my opinion most of White's weakness in card draw and ramp comes from the fact that even if you get card draw and ramp, you are often depending on the opponent playing the right deck, with the right cards at the right time. White is put into a beggars position at that point. not only is that mechanically weak, it makes the player feel weak, which isn't fun. All players, in all colors should be allowed to feel badass, so monowhite should still get to have control over when they ramp and draw, even if they get the worst, most complicated draw/ramp in the whole pie.
White, in the color pie, is also thematically a color of loyalty and belonging to the in-group. I think card draw and ramp could be a reward for playing mono-white, with the return of abilities like adamant, kicker and devotion would be perfect to allow white reliable draw and ramp, but only if they play mono-white.
"if the number of lands you control is lower than your Devotion to white, you may play an additional plains this turn" or "if this spell was kicked, you may draw a card" are definitely abilities that I think could help the game. White could also be the color of cost reduction and ramp, specifically for monowhite tribes or abilities: kind of like Auriok steelshaper, Giada font of hope, Danitha Capashen paragon etc...
I think this design direction would fix both issues: people won't use white as a splash color to get some additional draw/ramp, because that would usually be disadvantageous, but monowhite still gets to play and maybe win sometimes when playing against well built multicolor decks, green decks, blue decks etc.

I’d say that White is catching up, but it’s not exactly… Focused, nor is it cheap for the top end stuff. I think that focusing on creatures more for card draw IS the route to take. I’ve played God Eternal Oketra a number of times, and getting stuff like Mentor of the Meek and Welcoming Vampire on board, then taking advantage of ETBs has been outstanding.
For ramp… We definitely need FAR less parity cards, and more cards that just straight up search lands. But additionally, I think that cost reducers is good route, as we have a lot of those currently available in white, but so many are focused on SPECIFIC types

Mono white is definitely not as strong - I made a Darien, King of Kjeldor deck, it is not strong and budget, but even in a low power pod it’s obvious I’m at a disadvantage.
I will say some of the new white staples that have come out recently such as smothering tithe or esper sentinel have made playing a deck with white in it much better, especially with white’s role as a more control and tax color, while green and blue can make the deck faster, so ironically by printing strong white cards they’ve strengthened mono white the least and any other deck playing white and another color much more.
